Castanea Pumila Var. Ozarkensis (Ashe) Tucker, Comb. Nov, Gary E. Tucker Jan 1975

Castanea Pumila Var. Ozarkensis (Ashe) Tucker, Comb. Nov, Gary E. Tucker

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Castanea ozarkensis Ashe, the Ozark chinquapin of the vascular plant family Fagaceae, is distributed widely throughout the Interior Highlands of Arkansas and the adjacent states of Missouri and Oklahoma. Examination of material from throughout the range of C. ozarkensis indicates demonstrable morphological intergradation with C. pumila (L.) Miller sensu lato, the chinquapin of wide distribution in much of the eastern United States. It is proposed that C. ozarkensis be reduced to C. pumila var. ozarkensis (Ashe) Tucker, comb. nov.

A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek And Belly River In Southwest Alberta, Canada, Robert Keith Shaw Aug 1974

A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek And Belly River In Southwest Alberta, Canada, Robert Keith Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek and Belly River in southwest Alberta, Canada is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentration of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …

Variation In Ligule Spotting In Coreopsis Basalis, Edwin B. Smith Jan 1974

Variation In Ligule Spotting In Coreopsis Basalis, Edwin B. Smith

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The ligules of Coreopsis basalis bear an attractive reddish-brown spot at the base. The spot has been used as a taxonomic character of the species. But there is variation within populations at any one time, and within individuals at sequential times, for the size of the spot. A few individuals lack the ligule spot entirely. Variation in average ligule spot size in greenhouse-grown populations of C. basalis and an artificial hybrid is described. Average spot size declines as the blooming season progresses. Some individuals with spotted ligules early in the season bore spotless ligules late in the season. No correlation …

A Comparison Of Two Artificial Substrates In The Determination Of Net Primary Production, Leland C. Faulconer Jan 1974

A Comparison Of Two Artificial Substrates In The Determination Of Net Primary Production, Leland C. Faulconer

All Master's Theses

This study was to determine if a significant difference exists between two types of artificial substrates used to measure the growth rate of periphyton in a warm spring. Chlorophyll was used as an indirect measure of biomass in comparing the substrates and estimating net primary production. A semi-quantitative algal survey was done for each of the sites sampled.

The study was carried out for one year and it was demonstrated that there was a statistically significant difference between the two substrates.

Community Characteristics Of Six Burned Aspen-Conifer Sites And Their Related Animal Use /|Clarry H. Kleinman, Larry H. Kleinman

Theses and Dissertations

Six forest areas destroyed by fire representing different seral stages of aspen development and conifer invasion were studied to determine successional dynamics and the related livestock and big game use. Factors measured were: (a) age, basal area, density and frequency of aspen and conifer trees; (b) density and frequency of under-story species; (c) forage production for forbs, grasses, and browse, and (d) animal-days use for deer, cattle and sheep. Aspen appeared in the community the spring following the fire and conifers appeared fifteen to twenty years later. Conifers had begun to dominate aspen on an eighty-two year old stand. The …

Community Structure And Production In A Marsh On The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, Michael Bassett Robblee Jul 1973

Community Structure And Production In A Marsh On The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, Michael Bassett Robblee

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Four different plant communities occur on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Virginia, 1. Spartina alterniflora, 2. Distichlis spicata - Spartina patens - Juncus roemerianus, J. Baccharis halimifolia - Iva frutescens and 4. Spartina cynosuroides. The cordgrasses s. alterniflora and S. cynosuroides dominate the marsh.

Based-on standing crop estimates S. alterniflora produced 1218.6 grams dry wt/m2 and S.cynosuroides 1681.3 grams dry wt/m2, which is much higher than generally assumed for Virginia marshes. Evidence for the presence of two crops of S. alterniflora on the marsh during the growing season is-presented.

Two animal associations, composed …

Plant Succession In The Great Dismal Swamp Of Virginia, Susan Woodward Walker Apr 1972

Plant Succession In The Great Dismal Swamp Of Virginia, Susan Woodward Walker

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed. for 14 stands. Cluster diagrams based on index of similarity values illustrated interstand relationships. The Index of Fluctuation was developed for the analysis of intrastand dynamics. Based on the densities and numbers of species of trees and saplings within a stand, it indicated degree of compositional stability. It was concluded that present vegetation is divided into relatively distinct communities which have resulted, at least in part, from disturbance.

Studies Of Arundinaria: Experimental Induction Of Flowering And Additional Observation In The Field, Daniel L. Marsh Jan 1971

Studies Of Arundinaria: Experimental Induction Of Flowering And Additional Observation In The Field, Daniel L. Marsh

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Arundinaria has been observed for three successive seasons at a site near Amity, Arkansas. In advance of the 1971 flowering period rhizomes were taken from the field, pruned, and placed either in an environmental chamber or in the greenhouse in water or in sandy soil. Flowering occurred under each condition, but was most rapid and profuse in transplants growing in sandy soil in the greenhouse. Observations point to the possibility of induction of flowering or to the possible existence of an annually flowering race. Possible economic uses are considered.
