Analysis of gene sequences from three mitochondrial and two nuclear genes for a broad sampling of actiniarian taxa proposed a novel grouping of the families Aliciidae, Boloceroididae, and Gonactiniidae. (Rodríguez et al., 2014). Although previously unlinked, the association of these taxa was credible given the consistency of the genetic data and the shared occurrence of anatomical traits, including complex column structures (Aliciidae and Boloceroididae), tentacular sphincters (Boloceroididae and Gonactiniidae), and retention of juvenile musculature in adults (Boloceroididae and Gonactiniidae). When one species depends on one another for survival, they may have shared demographic histories. Further, when symbionts have shorter life spans, their rate of evolution may be quicker than that of their hosts. For this reason, detecting a recent demographic signal in a symbiont’s genome may often be easier than directly studying the host.

Sexual selection, or the process that favors traits for acquiring mates, is a powerful mechanism driving sexual trait variation like vivid fish colors, melodic cricket songs, and elaborate jumping spider dances. Sexual selection can also drive divergence between populations and speciation, generating an immense diversity of species. Flies in the Rhagoletis genus exhibit different coloration, size, behavior, and most conspicuously, wing patterns between species. These traits are employed when flies communicate with each other, including during mating interactions, and yet the role of sexual selection in trait variation has been sorely understudied. Studies show that the White-throated Sparrow's (Zonotrichia albicolis) song is evolving across North America. Previously, most songs ended in a series of "triplets" consisting of three notes. Sometime after the 1960s, a new variant arose in western Canada that ended in a series of "doublets" consisting of two notes. A recent study found that the doublet variant has since spread rapidly eastward across the continent, replacing the triplet variant. We set out to document this shift in southwest Missouri, which is part of the sparrow's wintering range. We found that triplets were significantly more common than doublets, indicating …

Lamniform sharks (Elasmobranchii: Lamniformes) display diverse habitat preferences and lifestyles. Based on museum specimens and published illustrations, we examined the proportion of the anteroposterior length of the rostral, olfactory, optic, and otic regions with respect to the neurocranial length in each lamniform species as a proxy of relative importance of each sensory region (electroreception, olfaction, vision, and ‘coordination’) to its lifestyle. We show that: 1) Carcharias and Megachasma (ragged-tooth and megamouth) have short rostral and large otic regions indicative of slower-swimming pelagic lifestyles with elevated coordination for balancing in the water column; 2) Alopias pelagicus, A. vulpinus, …

In Drosophila melanogaster it is well established that male sexual preference emphasizes high fecundity in females and females with larger body sizes. It is hypothesized that male preference for large females is due to a positive correlation between body size and fecundity. Here, we take advantage of a long-running experiment, where lineages of flies were made significantly larger (L-lineages) and smaller (S-lineages) during 400+ generations of artificial selection. The mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae) is a pest species found in western Norh America that attacks and kills Pinus host trees. Previous studies have identified genetic divergence between populations and variation in life-history traits (body size and development time) that are likely important in local adaptation. To understand the underlying genetic architecture of MPB adaptation and divergence, we performed an F1 intercross between two distinct populations (Utah & Arizona) and performed a QTL analysis. Most flowers are occupied by diverse communities of microbes, which can alter floral attractiveness to key pollinators and floral fitness by interacting with floral traits. Different species of flower often acquire unique communities of microbes. Consequently, pollinators are frequently forced to choose between two flowers with distinct floral microbiomes while foraging. However, it is currently unknown whether pollinators have an inherent preference for flowers containing one floral microbiome over another, and whether microbial preference is modified by variation in floral traits. Various Coleoptera (beetles) and Lepidoptera (moths) insects are known to produce highly active antifreeze peptides (AFPs), an adaptive trait that enabled them to avoid freezing and survive severe winters. These include the grain pest Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm), pine-boring Rhagium beetles, the fire-colored Dendroides beetles, a stag beetle, and the Choristoneura spruce budworms (moths). Insect AFPs are small peptides of ~8 to 15 kDa, consisting of several tandem 13-amino acid repeats of similar sequences, each ending with a conserved tripeptide Thr-Cys/aa-Thr motif, found to be important for ice binding. The Dissostichus genus of notothenioid fish contains two giant, iconic sister species, Dissostichus mawsoni (Antarctic toothfish) and Dissostichus eleginoides (Patagonian toothfish), which inhabit thermally distinct environments. D. mawsoni is protected by antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) from freezing in the cold waters of the Southern Ocean, while D. eleginoides lacks detectable antifreeze activity despite its recent divergence. Interestingly, recent evidence suggests the possibility of a third species in the Dissostichus genus, which is currently believed to be a separate population of D. eleginoides closer to the Southern Ocean whose genome has recently been published. The evolution of sex chromosomes is a ubiquitous and essential diversifying mechanism in eukaryotes. Yet early stages of sex-chromosome differentiation are poorly understood. The subdioecious octoploid, Fragaria virginiana, provides a rare opportunity to study the beginnings of sex chromosome evolution due to its young, polymorphic ZW sex system. Females are ZW and males/hermaphrodites are ZZ. F. virginiana has a small sex-determining region (SDR) located on the female W chromosome that has undergone three transposition events between the strawberry's four subgenomes, resulting in three SDR haplotypes: alpha (the result of a first transposition and closest to a pre-sex chromosome ancestral …

Tselfatiiformes was a group of small to medium-sized actinopterygian fishes that lived during the Cretaceous. Recently, a new tselfatiiform specimen consisting of a nearly complete, articulated skull was discovered from the Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale in Texas. The specimen suggests that the fish was a deep-bodied form and possibly measured about 50 cm in total length. It exhibits pectoral fins high upon the flank, well-developed preopercles, large infraorbital bones, and well-developed branchiostegal rays. The family of longhorn beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) are characterized by their elongate antennae, which are well adapted for detecting volatile compounds. This makes them an ideal family to study odorant receptor genes (ORs), which are the rapidly evolving family of proteins that are used by insects to detect odors at the molecular level. Here, we present data on 48 ORs we have sequenced and annotated from an antennal transcriptome of a male red milkweed beetle, Tetraopes tetrophthalmus. Polyphenism, the ability of an organism to produce discrete alternative phenotypes in response to environmental conditions, exemplifies the non-linear relationship among genes, the traits they influence, and the environment. While several genes that regulate polyphenism have been identified in some systems, such as the nematode Pristionchus pacificus, which exhibits a resource polyphenism in the development of alternative mouth morphologies, it is generally unknown which loci harbor intraspecific variation for polyphenism. A major goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the mechanisms that shape biodiversity, especially amongst highly speciose lineages such as parasitic wasps. However, most of these lineages are poorly described, with very little available natural history information. This lack of information limits our ability to uncover the environmental factors that contribute to their patterns of divergence, distribution, and abundance.
