External Morphology Of The Chorion Of The Annual Fishes Cynolebias (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), Marcelo Loureiro, Rafael O. De Sá
Biology Faculty Publications
Members of the family Rivulidae (killifishes) inhabit temporary bodies of freshwater in South and Central America (one species is also found in North America). The most remarkable characteristic of the family Rivulidae is that species have an annual life cycle with a drought-resistant egg during the dry season. Parenti's (1981) analysis of the order Cyprinodontiformes considered a single genus, Cynolebias, whereas Cos- ta's (1990) phylogenetic analysis of the family Rivulidae separates Cynolebias from Cynopoecilus. One of Costa's synapomorphies to separate Cynopoecilus is the unique structure of their egg's chorion, which is shared with Leptolebias and Campellolebias.

Mechanisms Of Carnitine-Mediated Modulation Of Aflatoxin B1-Dna Adduct Formation, Ayub Mohd Yatim
Mechanisms Of Carnitine-Mediated Modulation Of Aflatoxin B1-Dna Adduct Formation, Ayub Mohd Yatim
Doctoral Dissertations
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the possible mechanism(s) of L-carnitine-mediated modulation of AFB1-DNA adducts formation. The first part of the study investigated the effect of increased doses of carnitine on AFB1 binding to macromolecules, AFB1 uptake, activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST), and total glutathione concentrations in freshly isolated hepatocytes. Carnitine dose was significantly correlated with the formation of AFB1-DNA adduct ( r = -0.68;p = 0.0002 ), AFB1-protein adduct (r = 0.58;p = 0.017), but not AFB1-RNA adduct (r = 0.14;p = 0.604). …
The Factors Affecting The Transfer Of Training Based On The Opportunity To Perform Trained Tasks, David Arnold Blair
The Factors Affecting The Transfer Of Training Based On The Opportunity To Perform Trained Tasks, David Arnold Blair
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify and define the factors that affect the transfer of newly learned skills to the job. One factor that has been shown to affect the transfer of training to the job is the extent to which the training participants are given the opportunity to perform trained tasks once they return to their jobs. The opportunity to perform was to consist of two dimensions: breadth and activity level.
Training participants from a government facility and their immediate supervisors (N = 74) responded to two different questionnaires which measured the three dimensions of the opportunity …
Biology: What One Needs To Know, Ursula Goodenough
Biology: What One Needs To Know, Ursula Goodenough
Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations
Biology on this planet represents an astonishing experiment in carbon-based chemistry which, over billions of years, has generated billions of species adapted to countless major and minor fluctuations in ecological circumstances. In one sense there is no way to generalize about biology. While biological activities can all be ultimately explained by physical laws (like everything else in the universe), it is the emergent intensely particular properties of organisms that most interest us. This essay represents an attempt to describe some of the more prominent patterns that emerge from the sea of biological particularities, patterns that present many opportunities for religious …
Comparison Of Forest Stand Edges In Riparian And Mesic Habitats Along Watts Bar Reservoir Shoreline, Ruth Anne Hanahan
Comparison Of Forest Stand Edges In Riparian And Mesic Habitats Along Watts Bar Reservoir Shoreline, Ruth Anne Hanahan
Masters Theses
Approximately fifty years ago, the landscape upslope from the natural, riverine position banks of the Tennessee River was inundated by the closing of Watts Bar Dam. On the currently forested shoreline, habitats within the direct influence of the reservoir pool are riparian. Those above that influence are mesic. The purpose of this research was to determine compositional and structural differences between edges of mature forest stands established in a riparian habitat and those established in a mesic habitat along Watts Bar Reservoir shoreline.
Thirty quadrats were placed on shoreline sites with mature, minimally-disturbed forest stands: 15 in a riparian habitat …

The Evaluation Of Two Types Of Multivariate Analyses Applied To Grassland Vegetation Data From A Reclaimed Coal Mine Area In Southeast Kansas, Usa, Karen Frances Yates
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This study presents an analysis of the use of classification and ordination techniques for the detection of sub-communities at a reclaimed coal refuse dump and strip minded area in southeast Kansas. Cover values for 58 grass, forb, and woody species were estimated in 103 systematically positioned plots across the reclamation grassland using the modified Daubenmeyer cover scale. The data were submitted to an array of default and variant classification and ordination analysis programs in order to assess their ability to detect sub-communities. The classifications obtained from the analyses were mapped and analyzed for differences in species composition, diversity, and spatial …
Trade-Offs, Food Web Structure, And The Coexistence Of Habitat Specialists And Generalists, Mark A. Mcpeek
Trade-Offs, Food Web Structure, And The Coexistence Of Habitat Specialists And Generalists, Mark A. Mcpeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
Species differ greatly in the breadth of their environmental distributions. Within the same collection of habitats, some species occur in many habitats, while others are only able to exist in one of a few. Trade-offs in the abilities of species to perform in various ecological interactions are important both to facilitating species coexistence within a habitat and to limiting the distributions of species among habitats. In this article I use a food web model to explore how in the same collection of habitats some species may be limited by trade-offs to occupying only one habitat, while other species may face …
Using The Spot-Mapping Censusing Technique To Assess Changes In Breeding Bird Communities At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Alamo, Texas, 1940-1996, Alberto Cantu
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Results of breeding-bird censuses done by Davis in 1940 and by Gehlbach between 1973-1978 at Santa Ana National Wildlife, Alamo Texas, were compared to a 1995-1996 bird survey done in Gehlbach's study area. According to the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, bird densities in 1940 and 1995-1996 were similar, while 1973-1978 densities were lower. The 1995-1996 bird community was 76% similar to both the earlier studies. However, the communities studied in 1940 and 1973-1978 had only a 60% similarity. Negligible differences in bird densities and species composition were found between the 1995 and 1996 communities. Differences are attributed to changes in vegetation …
Taxonomic Status Of The Enigmatic Cryptotis Avia (Mammalia: Insectivora: Soricidae), With Comments On The Distribution Of The Colombian Small-Eared Shrew, Cryptotis Colombiana, Neal Woodman
Neal Woodman
Cryptotis avia G. M. Allen 1823, from the Eastern Andean Cordillera of Colombia, is a small-eared shrew previously known from, at most, five specimens. Review of the holotype, consisting of an understuffed skin and a partial skull, and three potential topotypes indicates that they are refereable to Cryptotis thomasi Merriam, 1897, and C. avia should be considered ajunior synonym of that name. Cryptotis thomasi is restricted to highlands around Bogotá in the Eastern Cordillera. Another specimen previously referred to C. avia is the second known specimen of Cryptotis colombiana Woodman & Timm 1993. This second record expands the known distribution …

The Diet Of Oryzomys Palustris Based On Stomach Content Analysis, Shannon L. Wright
The Diet Of Oryzomys Palustris Based On Stomach Content Analysis, Shannon L. Wright
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Oryzomys palustris (Harlan) is unusual in that it is one of two carnivorous mammals in the Family Muridae in North America. A diet analysis of Oryzomys palustris. the marsh rice rat, was done based on stomach contents. This was accomplished by taking the animals from two study areas located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The animals were taken monthly for one year. Once caught, the animals were sacrificed and their stomach contents were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible. This study showed that rice rats were omnivorous mammals, eating a variety of foods, including dicots, monocots, crabs, …

Pollen Dispersal In Low-Density Populations Of Three Neotropical Tree Species, Jason D. Nason, E. A. Stacy, J. L. Hamrick, S. P. Hubbell, R. B. Foster, R. Condit
Jason D Nason
Studies of mating patterns of tropical trees, typically involving common species, have revealed that most species are outcrossed and that, in some cases, a significant reaction of outcross pollen moves long distances. We evaluated mating systems and effective pollen dispersal for three hermaphroditic insect-pollinated Neotropical tree species, Calophyllum longifolium, Spondias mombin and Turpinia occidentalis, all of which occurred at low adult densities at the study site. Mating patterns were estimated for each maternal tree within 84-ha populations of C. Longifoliuman d S. mombin in 1992 and 1993 and within a 50-ha population of T. occidentalis in 1993. Each population was …

Feeding Habits Of Juvenile Largemouth Bass Micropterus Salmoides (Lacepede), Thomas R. Goodwill
Feeding Habits Of Juvenile Largemouth Bass Micropterus Salmoides (Lacepede), Thomas R. Goodwill
Honors Theses
The stomachs of 110 juvenile largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede) were examined to learn the early feeding habits of bass in a brackish environment. Bass were found to have five primary food sources: Taphromysis bowmani, Cloeon sp., Gammarus mucronatus, Micropterus salmoides, and Lepidophthalmus louisianum. Three feeding trends were observed during the course of the study. First, bass seemed to display prey selection. Second, bass length increased as prey size increased. Third, the types of prey eaten by the bass changed as the bass increased in size.
Linking Local Species Interactions To Rates Of Speciation In Communities, Mark A. Mcpeek
Linking Local Species Interactions To Rates Of Speciation In Communities, Mark A. Mcpeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
Regional species diversity limits the diversity of local communities by defining the pool of species that are available to colonize sites. Biogeographical processes that influence speciation and extinction rates determine the size and composition of this regional species pool. Community ecologists are beginning to recognize the importance of these biogeographical processes in influencing diversity patterns among local communities, but the potential for local interactions to influence biogeographical processes, especially speciation, has been little considered. In this paper I discuss one mechanism by which variation in the strengths of local interactions can influence the potential for population differentiation and thus for …

Rare And Endangered Plants At Gateway National Recreation Area: A Case For Protection Of Urban Natural Areas, Richard Stalter, Michael D. Byer, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D.
Faculty Works: CERCOM
The diversity of native plant species in urban environments is usually overlooked when biodiversity levels are considered. Inventories of native plants reveal many to be rare species surviving the harsh conditions encountered in urban ecosystems. Knowledge of their existence and an inventory of their distribution will assist in maintaining these populations. Protection strategies for rare plant species are outlined for urban National Parks.
