Aspen Bibliography

This is one of the reports developed as part of the Forest-Range Environmental Study (FRES) of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. This report presents descriptive sketches of 34 soil-vegetation units, called ecosystems. These cover all the land area of the 48 contiguous States.

Visual Detection Of Cryptic Prey By Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil Jan 1977

Visual Detection Of Cryptic Prey By Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil

Avian Cognition Papers

Blue jays learned to respond differentially to the presence or absence of Catocala moths in slides. This detection of the moths by the jays was affected by the background upon which the moth was placed and its body orientation, thus providing an objective measure of crypticity. These procedures are useful for the study of visual detection of prey.

Forest Insect And Disease Management : Aspen Mortality At The Maroon Lake Campground, David W. Johnson, Thomas E. Hinds

Aspen Bibliography

At the request of the White River National Forest, Dave Johnson, Plant Pathologist, FI&DM and Tom Hinds, Plant Pathologist, RMFRES, made an evaluation of aspen mortality in the Maroon Lake Campground, Aspen Ranger District during June 13 to 15, 1977. Structural Comparisons Of Four Plant Communities In The Great Dismal Swamp, Claire Virginia Dabel Jul 1976

Structural Comparisons Of Four Plant Communities In The Great Dismal Swamp, Claire Virginia Dabel

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Four plant communities in the Great Dismal Swamp, located on the coastal plain in southeastern Virginia, were sampled and estimates of density, basal area and aboveground standing crop biomass were determined, Biomass was estimated as 229,800 kg/ha in the Chamaecyparis thyoides community and as 344,500 kg/ha in the Taxodium distichum community. Biomass for the two hardwood communities, the

Acer-Nyssa community and mixed hardwood (Quercus-Nyssa-Acer-Liriodendron-Liquidamber) community was estimated as 195,700 kg/ha and 194,600 kg/ha respectively and did not differ significantly (P

Analysis Of The Presettlement Forests Of The Unglaciated Portions Of Southern Illinois, Lawrence A. Leitner May 1976

Analysis Of The Presettlement Forests Of The Unglaciated Portions Of Southern Illinois, Lawrence A. Leitner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research used the data on witness trees found in the surveyors' records of the General Land Office surveys of 1805-1815 as the basis for studying the primeval forests of unglaciated southern Illinois. Via computer, the random pairs and closest individual methods of plotless sampling were used to develop stand attributes tables, with soil association boundaries defining the limits of forest stands. A vegetation map was developed from these stands. Four major forest types were delineated: Upland Oak, nixed Hardwoods, Swamp Forest, and Floodplain Forest. The Upland Oak Forest, with lowest density (175.9/ha or 71.2/acre) and basal area (21.3 rn …

Aspen Forest After Harvest, Norbert V. Debyle Jan 1976

Aspen Forest After Harvest, Norbert V. Debyle

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen is a unique forest tree with respect to regeneration. It produces abundant root suckers, up to 40,000 per acre are common, after clearcutting or fire removes the parent stand. The rapidly growing sucker stand competes well with other vegetation, but is susceptible to destruction by excessive ungulate browsing. Clearcut areas produce more streamflow and more growth on shrubs and herbaceous vegetation than does the uncut forest. The patchwork of age classes that results from even-age management optimizes wildlife habitat requirements for several desired species.

Studies On The Causes Of Tree Distribution In A Forest Type In The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Janszen

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed in a forest type of the Dismal Swamp. A 0.5 ha forest stand was divided into 200 5 x 5 meter contiguous quadrats and the tree size classes were precisely mapped. Fifty soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH, and major nutrients. A topographic map was constructed with precision to 0.01 ft. Analysis of variance tests showed non-randomness to exist in soil texture and nutrient content while homogeneity tests showed non-randomness in distribution of some woody species. Factor analysis indicated no significant correlations between soil quality, topography, and woody species. Findings indicate that …

Location-Allocation Models For Establishing Facilities, David F. Gibson, John Rodenberg Jan 1974

Location-Allocation Models For Establishing Facilities, David F. Gibson, John Rodenberg

Aspen Bibliography

Two models and accompanying computer programs are presented which were developed to locate facilities for the timber harvesting industry. Addressed is a case of the facility location-allocation problem. The optimum location and number of landings, facilities to which timber is transshipped, are determined so as to minimize a cost function. This function is composed of the following components: (1) cost of transporting material from its original location to a landing, (2) cost of establishing a landing (facility cost), and (3) cost of transporting material from the landings to some designated point termed the origin. Output of the computer programs is …

Mutual Exclusion Between Salmonberry And Douglas-Fir In The Coast Range Of Oregon, Kenneth Ray Still Jun 1972

Mutual Exclusion Between Salmonberry And Douglas-Fir In The Coast Range Of Oregon, Kenneth Ray Still

Dissertations and Theses

One serious problem faced by the forest industry in the Pacific Northwest is poor regeneration of commercial trees on land which is harvested and subsequently dominated by brush species. In Coastal Oregon, salmonberry is one of these brush species. Detailed investigations of field sites indicate that light intensity in the brush stands was low but sufficient for germination and early growth of Douglas-fir seedlings and soil moisture percentages and nutrient levels were high enough to support early Douglas-fir growth. Laboratory tests demonstrated the presence of leachable phytotoxins in the leaves of salmonberry. The hypothesis resulting from this study is that …

Yields From 18-Year-Old Aspen Via Total Tree Harvesting, M. K. Benson, D. W. Einspahr

Aspen Bibliography

Described are the results of harvesting the above-ground parts of an 18-year-old aspen stand and the observations made on the initial suckering of the new stand. The yields for the stand of 17.7 cunits per acre were greater than predicted yields of comparable material for the site at age 35. Suckering on the area the first year after cutting averaged 37,000 aspen stands per acre and 2.6 feet in height.

Forest Fuel Accumulation -- A Growing Problem, Marvin Dodge Jan 1972

Forest Fuel Accumulation -- A Growing Problem, Marvin Dodge

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

Discusses the problem caused by accumulation of forest fuels in the wild-land forests of the western USA under the policy of total fire protection pursued there for many years, and emphasizes the need to find economical and practical ways of reducing fuel hazards in these forests, especially by means of prescribed burning under conditions in which low-intensity fires can be achieved.
