The Risk Of Bpa In B Lymphocyte-Mediated Autoimmunity, Mario J. Palacios
The Risk Of Bpa In B Lymphocyte-Mediated Autoimmunity, Mario J. Palacios
Senior Honors Theses
Autoimmune disorders disproportionately affect females, a bias largely attributed to estrogen's modulation of B lymphocyte development and tolerance. Bisphenol A (BPA), a common plastic monomer, shows estrogenic activity and acts as an endocrine disruptor and epigenetic modifier. This thesis examines how BPA may increase autoimmune risk by mimicking estrogen such that it can excite estrogen receptors which rescue autoreactive B lymphocytes from apoptosis. While direct research linking BPA to B lymphocyte-mediated autoimmunity is limited, understanding BPA’s course of action in B lymphocytes is critical for addressing the rising prevalence of autoimmune diseases and its possible link to the increased and …
Analysis Of The Effects Of Astaxanthin On Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Kara A. Walters
Analysis Of The Effects Of Astaxanthin On Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Kara A. Walters
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Astaxanthin (AXT) is an antioxidant carotenoid that is produced by the microalgae Haemococcus pluvialis. This supplement is best known for its potential health benefits including anti-inflammatory, antitumor, immunomodulatory, anticancer and antidiabetic activities. Astaxanthin is marketed as an oral dietary supplement and is widely used in the nutraceutical industry as well as a coloring agent in the food industry. Since Astaxanthin has been increasingly popular as a dietary supplement, cytotoxicity is relevant to consumer exposure. Obtaining the IC50, the concentration that inhibits 50% of cell growth, is important to find how Astaxanthin may interact with cancer, and this can be found …
Developing A Protocol For Non-Cellular Transplantation Of Donor Mitochondria Into Recipient Cells, Andrew Parton
Developing A Protocol For Non-Cellular Transplantation Of Donor Mitochondria Into Recipient Cells, Andrew Parton
Honors Theses
Tumor innervation has emerged as a critical feature of cancer progression, with increased nerve density correlating with enhanced aggressiveness, metastatic dissemination, and poor clinical outcome. However, the functional contribution of neurons to tumor biology remains incompletely defined. We recently identified the intercellular transfer of mitochondria from neurons to cancer cells as a mechanism that promotes tumor progression. We therefore hypothesized that disruption of this transfer could attenuate tumor aggressivity. To directly investigate this process, we developed an approach to isolate mitochondria from donor cells and transplant them into recipient cancer cells independently of canonical cell-cell interactions. Transferred mitochondria were tracked …
The Impact Of Glucose Exposure On Organic Cation Transporters (Oct) Function In A Corneal Epithelial Cell Line, David A. Garza
The Impact Of Glucose Exposure On Organic Cation Transporters (Oct) Function In A Corneal Epithelial Cell Line, David A. Garza
Theses & Dissertations
Organic cation transporters (OCT) facilitate the movement of neurochemicals and medications, contribute to the removal of cellular waste, and facilitate neuronal communication. Three subtypes of these high-capacity, low-affinity transporters (OCT1, OCT2, and OCT3) are differently expressed in peripheral tissues such as the liver, kidneys, as well as the central nervous system. OCTs are also expressed in ocular tissues. Chronic hyperglycemia is a complication commonly associated with diabetes that can lead to ocular diseases such as diabetic keratopathy, which affects the cornea. In this project, we expose immortalized human corneal epithelial cells (HCE-S) to various glucose concentrations to study their impact …
Optimizing Itpa R178c Assays Via Hplc, Jared J. Reisnouer, Wally D. Pines
Optimizing Itpa R178c Assays Via Hplc, Jared J. Reisnouer, Wally D. Pines
2026 Symposium
Two of the major nucleotide bases in DNA and RNA (Adenine and Guanine) are derived from the purine Inosine Monophosphate (IMP). IMP may occasionally form the noncanonical nucleotide Inosine Triphosphate (ITP) within the cell and become incorporated into DNA during replication, leading to potentially lethal errors. To combat this, human cells produce the “housekeeping” enzyme Inosine Triphosphatase (ITPA) to revert ITP to IMP. A mutation of this protein that replaces the 178th amino acid Arginine with Cysteine (R178C) is associated with a fatal infantile encephalopathy. Previous assessments of enzyme-substrate binding and catalysis for ITPA variants have been run at a …
Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Ube3a Function In Cic-Dux4 Sarcoma, Jesse D. Walker
Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Ube3a Function In Cic-Dux4 Sarcoma, Jesse D. Walker
Theses
CIC-DUX4 sarcoma (CDS) is a rare and extremely aggressive soft tissue sarcoma that primarily affects children and young adults. CDS is characterized by an oncogenic chromosomal translocation. Current treatments for CDS are similar to those in other sarcomas like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Treatments, however show that CDS responds poorly compared to other sarcomas, due to relapses of localized disease at high rates and short duration response of treatment, proving the importance of understanding CIC-DUX4’s complex role on how it regulates overall gene expression in CDS cells from a molecular approach.
UBE3A is a ubiquitin protein ligase that plays a …

Microplastics (MPs) are defined as small plastic particles that come from the degradation of plastics [Ziani et al. 2023], that hold a regular or irregular shape, ranging from 1μm to 5 mm [Campanale et al. 2025]. This diminutive size makes them virtually impossible to remove once released into the environment[Lee et al. 2023]. Furthermore, biological, chemical, and physical processes break MP's further down in the environment, causing them to exist in nano-level sizes (1nm-1μm) [Lee et al. 2023], further exacerbating their threat to critical habitats. However, recent studies have shown MP contamination expands beyond the natural environment as recent studies …

Epichaperomes are long-lasting, stable assemblies of chaperones, co-chaperones, and associated factors that facilitate cell survival in maladaptive cellular states. Their inhibition has emerged as an attractive therapeutic strategy for the treatment of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases (Rodina et al., 2016). Epichaperomes are hallmarks of robust proliferation in cancer cell populations across many cancer types and are abundantly present in several stem cell varieties, including induced pluripotent stem cells, human embryonic kidney cells, and cancer stem cells (Kishinevsky et al., 2018).
The core protein of the eukaryotic heat shock protein machinery, Heat Shock Protein 90 (Hsp90), is a central chaperone that …
Epigenetic Modifications In Dedifferentiated Liver Cells To Restore Lost Liver Function, Shreya Sharma
Epigenetic Modifications In Dedifferentiated Liver Cells To Restore Lost Liver Function, Shreya Sharma
Masters Theses
The goal of the study is to investigate whether the epigenetic modifications can enhance the restoration of liver gene expression in dedifferentiated hepatoma cells or not. For the study, we used dedifferentiated H11 hepatoma cell lines which overexpress one of a panel of introduced candidate liver-enriched transcription factors H11-HNF1a, H11-CREB3L3, H11-CREG1, H11- HHEX, H11-HNF6, and H11-IGFBP1. The cells were treated with the DNA methyltransferase inhibitor 5-azacytidine and the histone deacetylase inhibitor sodium butyrate, both individually and in combination. Gene expression analysis was determined by RT-qPCR, which revealed that while transcription factor overexpression alone produced limited activation, epigenetic modulation, particularly Histone …
