In 2018, there were an estimated 18 million cancer cases worldwide, with lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and leukemia contributing to a significant portion of these cases. Lymphoma accounted for 79,990 cases, multiple myeloma for 159,985 cases, and leukemia for 437,033 cases globally (AICR, 2018). In the United States alone, approximately 30,770 people are diagnosed with multiple myeloma each year. Multiple myeloma comprises about 1.8% of all cancers and around 10% of all “blood cancers,” which includes leukemia (Penn Medicine, 2020). India ranks third in the highest reported cases of blood cancer, following the United States and China, affecting more than 70,000 …

Recent advances in the field of immuno-oncology have brought transformative changes in the management of cancer patients. The immune profile of tumours has been found to have key value in predicting disease prognosis and treatment response in various cancers. Multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence have emerged as potent tools for the simultaneous detection of multiple protein biomarkers in a single tissue section, thereby expanding opportunities for molecular and immune profiling while preserving tissue samples. By establishing the phenotype of individual tumour cells when distributed within a mixed cell population, the identification of clinically relevant biomarkers with high-throughput multiplex immunophenotyping of tumour …

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm usually presents as skin lesions. Diagnostic error occurs when it primarily presents in leukemic phase without skin involvement. Triad of CD4, CD56 and CD123 immunophenotype expression is essential to avoid misdiagnosis of this rare hematological malignancy. Here we describe a patient who presented in overt leukemic phase of BPDCN highlighting diagnostic challenges encountered that resulted in delayed diagnosis and poor outcome

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a ubiquitous benign mesenchymal tumour of fibroblastic origin, which occurs most often in middle-aged adults. It usually presents as lung mass originating from pleura, but extrapleural occurrence is also common. Tumour is characterised by hypo- and hyper-cellular areas of spindle-shaped cells, arranged in haphazard manner with dispersed staghorn-shaped vessels. Surgical excision is the curative treatment. SFTs of the primary testicular or paratesticular region are extremely rare, but they exhibit histologic findings similar to SFTs originating at other body sites. Here, we report the case of a paratesticular SFT in a 37-year male, who presented with …

Chronic granulomatous inflammation is a common finding in lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs), but it is important to exclude coexisting mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) especially in patients from areas of high endemicity. This case emphasizes the relevance of performing MTB culture on bone marrow exhibiting LPD and concomitant granulomas

Material transfer agreements exist to facilitate the exchange of materials and associated data between researchers as well as to protect the interests of the researchers and their institutions. But this dual mandate can be a source of frustration for researchers, creating administrative burdens and slowing down collaborations. We argue here that in most cases in pre-competitive research, a simple agreement would suffice; the more complex agreements and mechanisms for their negotiation should be reserved for cases where the risks posed to the institution and the potential commercial value of the research reagents is high.

Smokeless Tobacco Use: A Risk Factor For Hyperhomocysteinemia In A Pakistani Population, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal, Mohsin Yakub
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background
Smokeless tobacco (ST) use is highly prevalent in the South Asian populations. While there have been a number of reports on association of ST consumption with cancer, very few studies have been conducted to investigate its relationship with cardiovascular disease. Hyperhomocysteinemia is a well-recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, its association with ST use has never been investigated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of ST use with hyperhomocysteinemia in an urban Pakistani population.
Methodology/Principal Findings
In a cross-sectional study for assessment of risks of hyperhomocysteinemia, 872 healthy adults (355 males and 517 females …

Haematology and Oncology, East Africa
Twelve patients with metastatic colorectal cancer participated in a Phase I trial of 1311-labeled chimeric B72.3 (human IgG4). Consecutive groups of patients received 18 mCi/m 2, 27 mCi/ m 2 and 36 mCi/m a. No acute side effects related to antibody administration were noted. Bone marrow suppression was the only side effect; it was dose-dependent and correlated with whole-body radiation dose estimates. The lowest dose level produced no marrow suppression, whereas 27 mCi/m 2 resulted in Grade 1 and 2 marrow suppression in two of three patients. The maximum tolerated close was 36 mCi/m 2 with all six patients at …

Evidence For The Elevation Of Serum Carcinoembryonic Antigen And Tumor-Associated Glycoprotein-72 Levels In Patients Administered Interferons, John Greiner, Fiorella Guadagni, David Goldstein, Ernest Borden, Roy Ritts, Patricia Witt, Albert Lobuglio, Mansoor Saleh, Jeffrey Schlom
Haematology and Oncology, East Africa
Sera were collected from 111 patients diagnosed with adenocarcinoma or nonadenocarcinoma malignancies who received different schedules of interferon (IFN)-γ or IFN-βser alone or in combination. Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and tumor-associated glycoprotein-72 (TAG-72) antigen levels were measured to determine whether interferon could enhance the tumor shedding and, thereby, the serum level of either tumor antigen. Less than 10% of the sera samples from patients diagnosed with nonadenocarcinoma malignancies (e.g., hairy cell leukemia, melanoma) had positive titers of TAG-72 or CEA, and interferon neither increased nor resulted in the appearance of either tumor antigen in those sera. In contrast, 59.2% and …

Clinical Use Of A Standard Kit-Preparation Of Radiolabeled Monoclonal Antibody 96.5 In The Diagnostic Imaging Of Metastatic Melanoma., Mansoor Saleh, D M. Miller, L Peterson, C D. Russell, M W. Unger
Haematology and Oncology, East Africa
We studied the efficiency of a standard-kit preparation using 1 mg 111In-labeled 96.5 monoclonal antibody in combination with 19 mg of unlabeled antibody in the diagnostic imaging of 27 patients with documented metastatic melanoma. Twenty-three of 26 patients (88%) demonstrated immunoscintigraphic localization of tumor. Of 104 metastatic sites previously documented by conventional studies, 62 (60%) were identified by immunoscintigraphy. A total of 77 sites demonstrated localization of radiolabeled antibody. Fifty-four (70%) corresponded to known sites of disease; eight sites (10%) were "discovered" by immunoscintigraphy and subsequently confirmed by conventional studies; 15 imaged sites (20%) could not be confirmed by conventional …
