The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment And Invasive Mollusks On Freshwater Environments, Matthew Schuler, William D. Hintz, Devin K. Jones, Brian M. Mattes, Aaron B. Stoler, Rick A. Relyea
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The effects of an invasive species on the environment can be altered by anthropogenic activities such as nutrient pollution or the presence of additional invasive species with similar or unique traits. Using experimental mesocosms, we tested the separate and combined effects of three invasive mollusks (zebra mussels, Asian clams, and banded mystery snails) on freshwater environments in nutrient-poor and nutrient-enriched conditions. We predicted that in nutrient-poor conditions, single mollusk species would reduce the abundance of algae and zooplankton, but nutrient enrichment would mitigate these effects. Regardless of nutrient additions, paired bivalve species would reduce phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance, increasing periphyton …

Clinical Trials In Alzheimer’S Disease: A Hurdle In The Path Of Remedy, Alexandra E. Oxford, Erica S. Stewart, Troy T. Rohn
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Human clinical trials seek to ameliorate the disease states and symptomatic progression of illnesses that, as of yet, are largely untreatable according to clinical standards. Ideally, clinical trials test “disease-modifying drugs,” i.e., therapeutic agents that specifically modify pathological features or molecular bases of the disease and would presumably have a large impact on disease progression. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), however, this approach appears to have stalled progress in the successful development of clinically useful therapies. For the last 25 years, clinical trials involving AD have centered on beta-amyloid (Aβ) and the Aβ hypothesis of …
The Impact Of Nicotine Accumulation Exposure On Lithobates Catebeianus Larvae Mortality, Luke Micek
The Impact Of Nicotine Accumulation Exposure On Lithobates Catebeianus Larvae Mortality, Luke Micek
UCARE: Research Products
Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world and contain over 4,000 chemicals, including the organic compound nicotine (Slaughter et al. 2011). Billions of cigarette butts are littered each year which may wash into bodies of water, impacting the local wildlife. To determine how introduced chemicals impact the environment, it is important to study its effects on indicator species. Amphibians, such as Lithobates catebeianus, act as indicator species due to their extreme sensitivity to chemical changes in its environment. The purpose of this research project was to obtain data to help determine the impact nicotine accumulation has …

Senior Project: An Investigative Study Into The Bacterial Contamination Of Little Black Creek, Margaret I. Brenneman
Honors Projects
An investigation of Escherichia coli concentrations in a west Michigan stream was conducted to determine sources of fecal contamination that impact water quality. Little Black Creek (LBC) is located in Muskegon County and discharges into Lake Michigan at the P.J. Hoffmaster Campground Beach. Often referred to as an “indicator bacteria,” water contaminated with E. coli has a high probability to contain other enteric pathogens as well. Beach water testing in 2020 using Colilert-18 methods revealed E. coli levels of 579 cfu/100mL in the creek discharge area that exceeded total body contact criteria of 300 cfu/100mL. A follow-up study of the …
Relevance Of Individual And Environmental Drivers Of Movement Of Golden Eagles, Maitreyi Sur
Relevance Of Individual And Environmental Drivers Of Movement Of Golden Eagles, Maitreyi Sur
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
An animal’s movement is expected to be governed by an interplay between goals determined by its internal state and energetic costs associated with navigating through the external environment. Understanding this ecological process is challenging when an animal moves in two dimensions and even more difficult for birds that move in a third dimension. To understand the dynamic interaction between the internal state of an animal and the variable external environment, we evaluated hypotheses explaining association of different covariates of movement and the trade-offs birds face as they make behavioural decisions in a fluctuating landscape. We used ~870 000 GPS telemetry …

Using Δ18o To Track Po4 Entering The Western Basin Of Lake Erie, Melanie M. Marshall, Gabrielle K. Metzner, Kevin E. Mccluney
Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Algal blooms in the Western Basin of Lake Erie are dependent upon nutrients provided by major rivers within Northwest Ohio. To develop more accurate methods of defining which of these waterways is the largest contributor, a proof of concept study is being conducted using δ18O of phosphate molecules. In the summer of 2016, under relatively low stream flow conditions, 10-20L samples of water were collected at the several major branches within the Portage River, at the mouths of the Portage, Maumee, and Sandusky Rivers, and at two locations within the Western Basin. In the spring of 2017, these collections were …
Detection Probability Of The American Marten (Martes Americana) In Michigan’S Lower Peninsula, Taylor Brian Root
Detection Probability Of The American Marten (Martes Americana) In Michigan’S Lower Peninsula, Taylor Brian Root
Masters Theses
To accurately manage for the sustainability of wildlife populations, managers must first determine how to locate individuals of a population with great consistency. Determining the efficiency of detection techniques is a challenge, especially when the study species are scarce or elusive. Such is the case with the American marten (Martes americana), a small mustelid found across the Northern United States and Canada. In the lower peninsula of Michigan, marten are considered a species of concern, and the full extent of their range remains unknown. My goal was to test the efficacy of motiontriggered cameras for detecting the presence of American …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Bioerosion by reef-dwelling organisms influences net carbonate budgets on reefs worldwide. External bioeroders, such as parrotfish and sea urchins, and internal bioeroders, including sponges and lithophagid bivalves, are major contributors to bioerosion on reefs. Despite their importance, few studies have examined how environmental (e.g., nutrients) or biological drivers (e.g., the actions of other bioeroders) may influence bioeroder dynamics on reefs. For example, internal bioeroders could promote external bioerosion by weakening the coral skeletal matrix. Our study investigated: ( 1) whether nutrient supply influences the dynamics between internal and external bioeroders and ( 2) how the presence of a boring bivalve, …
Embryonic Development Of The Pharyngeal Arch Arteries In Mammals, Megan E. Zierold
Embryonic Development Of The Pharyngeal Arch Arteries In Mammals, Megan E. Zierold
Student Publications
The pharyngeal arch arteries (PAAs) in mammals undergo asymmetric remodeling to give rise to the major blood vessels. The first and second PAAs form rudimentarily in mammalian embryos and eventually regress as the third, fourth, and sixth PAAs predominate. Cell migration, proliferation, and apoptosis drive the remodeling process, stimulated by a number of underlying molecular mechanisms. Sonic hedgehog, Hox genes, Tgfβ2, Tbx1, and a number of transcription regulators all influence PAA morphogenesis. Tbx1, which is found in the deleted region of Chromosome 22 in DiGeorge Syndrome patients, forms anterior-to-posterior and medial-tolateral gradients in the developing PAA system to promote remodeling. …
Gene-Based Clustering Algorithms: Comparison Between Denclue, Fuzzy-C, And Birch, Martin C. Nwadiugwu
Gene-Based Clustering Algorithms: Comparison Between Denclue, Fuzzy-C, And Birch, Martin C. Nwadiugwu
Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications
The current study seeks to compare 3 clustering algorithms that can be used in gene-based bioinformatics research to understand disease networks, protein-protein interaction networks, and gene expression data. Denclue, Fuzzy-C, and Balanced Iterative and Clustering using Hierarchies (BIRCH) were the 3 gene-based clustering algorithms selected. These algorithms were explored in relation to the subfield of bioinformatics that analyzes omics data, which include but are not limited to genomics, proteomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics data. The objective was to compare the efficacy of the 3 algorithms and determine their strength and drawbacks. Result of the review showed that unlike Denclue and …
A Reexamination Of The Freshwater Mussel Community Of The Little Miami River, Emily Davis
A Reexamination Of The Freshwater Mussel Community Of The Little Miami River, Emily Davis
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Understanding the changes in biodiversity and local freshwater mussel populations is critical to mitigate the risks to these populations. Freshwater ecosystems continue to degrade rapidly. The freshwater mussel community of the Little Miami River is degraded and has been in decline for many years. The biodiversity contained within freshwater ecosystems is lost at unprecedented rates influenced by human activity. Freshwater mussels play a key role in understanding the effects of human activity on freshwater ecosystems as well as maintaining the health of freshwater habitats. However, they are also sensitive to changes and disturbances, in their ecosystems. This study involved monitoring …
Optimization Of Methods For Cross-Species Infection Of Cell Cultures With Wolbachia, Sarah J. Lane
Optimization Of Methods For Cross-Species Infection Of Cell Cultures With Wolbachia, Sarah J. Lane
Honors Thesis
The common intracellular endosymbiont genus of bacteria called Wolbachia is of interest due to the promise it shows for playing a role in disease control. Wolbachia have a number of widely variable effects on its many species of host insects. In combination with these roles, Wolbachia largely affects reproduction and development of its host species. It can lead to feminization and cytoplasmic incompatibility (Werren et al. 2008). Furthermore, this species is vertically transmitted which means that it passes from mother to offspring (Caragata et al., 2016). In combination with its effects on reproduction, which can allow Wolbachia to propagate through …
Optical Activation Of Gaba Release From D2-Medium Spiny Neurons, Nurat Affinnih
Optical Activation Of Gaba Release From D2-Medium Spiny Neurons, Nurat Affinnih
Biological Sciences
Medium spiny neurons (MSNs) make up more than 95% of the cells in the striatum and therefore represent the main structures for specific information processing in the striatum. MSNs can be separated into two sub-populations based on the type of dopamine receptor they express and their target region. Roughly one-half of all MSNs express D1 dopamine receptors and send information to the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and are called D1-MSNs. D1-MSNs are responsible for promoting movement execution. The other sub-population of MSNs expresses D2 dopamine receptors and for this reason, they are called D2-MSNs. D2-MSNs send information to the …
