Questionable Validity Of The Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Metric Used For Value-Based Purchasing, Lindsay E. Calderon, Kevin T. Kavanagh, Mara K. Rice
Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) occur in 290,000 US hospital patients annually, with an estimated cost of $290 million. Two different measurement systems are being used to track the US health care system's performance in lowering the rate of CAUTIs. Since 2010, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) metric has shown a 28.2% decrease in CAUTI, whereas the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention metric has shown a 3%-6% increase in CAUTI since 2009. Differences in data acquisition and the definition of the denominator may explain this discrepancy. The AHRQ metric analyzes chart-audited data and reflects both catheter …

Abstract
Kaolin geophagia is associated with the relief of gastrointestinal distress, but it may also cause adverse health effects on the body. This study was designed to: assess kaolin composition; test if 129SvEv mice would consume kaolin and determine the consequences of consumption; and assess rotational stress modulation of consumption. Thirteen kaolin samples were purchased from Alabama and Georgia stores. Chemical and physical properties were characterized for each sample using a Munsell chart, pH meter, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Visible Near-InfraRed Spectra, and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry. Kaolin was then given to mice as food supplements and …

Generation And Assessment Of Muscular Mutations In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Katie N. Reget
DePaul Discoveries
A study of egg laying muscular mutations in C. elegans was conducted over a span of ten weeks. Parent (EGL-19) and wild type (N2) were exposed to mutagenesis and integration mutation techniques to generate genetic and physical different mutants. Overall, four genetic, physical and phenotypically unique worms were generated for the process of mutagenesis. The worms used in the process of integration were found to have shortened life spans, reduced size and decrease numbers of progeny.

Comparative Analysis Of Anti-Bd Bacteria From Six Malagasy Frog Species Of Ranomafana National Park, Kelsey Savage
Comparative Analysis Of Anti-Bd Bacteria From Six Malagasy Frog Species Of Ranomafana National Park, Kelsey Savage
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
As Malagasy amphibians are facing an impending extinction crisis from the lethal skin fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), it has become imperative to proactively mitigate the threat. Bd sporangia develop in the skin of infected amphibians and cause the skin to thicken, leading to ionic imbalance and eventual heart failure. It has been shown that certain bacterial species are able to inhibit Bd growth on amphibians by producing antifungal metabolites. Community-based probiotics are one approach used to combat chytridomycosis by inoculating an environment with Bd-inhibitory bacteria so that many amphibian species are treated at once. With this method, it is important …

Pathological Effects Of Repeated Concussive Tbi In Mouse Models: Periventricular Damage And Ventriculomegaly, Richard H. Wolferz Jr.
Honors Scholar Theses
Repeated concussive traumatic brain injury (rcTBI) is the most prominent form of head injury affecting the brain, with an estimated 1.7 million Americans affected each year (Kuhn 2012). Neurologists have been concerned about the danger of repeated head impacts since the 1920’s, but researchers have only begun to understand the long-term effects of rcTBI (McKee 2009). Although symptoms can be as mild as dizziness, current research suggests that multiple concussions can lead to a progressive degenerative brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) (Luo 2008, McKee 2009, Kane 2013). Research on the brain is just beginning to scratch the …

Manipulation Of The Microbiome And Its Impact On Functional Recovery Following Ischemic Stroke, Michal Jandzinski
Honors Scholar Theses
Each year, nearly 800,000 individuals residing in the United States will have a stroke. Of these, about 130,000 cases will prove fatal while many of the survivors will be forced to live with disability for the remainder of their lives. Out of all strokes over 87% are ischemic strokes. The widespread incidence of this debilitating condition costs the United States an estimated $36.5 billion dollars every single year. Despite this, clinicians are armed with very little to combat the disease. Recent research developments have brought about the rise in awareness about the importance of the microbiome, the various gut flora …
Characterization Of Continuously Oscillating Neurons (Cons) Of The Medial Septum Of Rats, Nadia Noel Carreon
Characterization Of Continuously Oscillating Neurons (Cons) Of The Medial Septum Of Rats, Nadia Noel Carreon
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Theta oscillation is the largest extracellular synchronous signal that can be recorded from the mammalian brain. It is known to influence information retention in the hippocampus, which plays a key role in declarative memory, recognition memory, working memory, and spatial memory. The theta oscillation field frequency is between 3 and 12 Hz and is present during exploratory behavior and sleep in rodents. Theta rhythm in the hippocampus is postulated to be produced by the rhythmical activity of pacemaking cells in the medial septumvertical limb of the diagonal band of Broca (MS-vDBB). Previous work in our laboratory demonstrated the existence of …
Igfbp2 Potentiates Egfr-Stat3 Signaling In Glioma, Yingxuan Chua
Igfbp2 Potentiates Egfr-Stat3 Signaling In Glioma, Yingxuan Chua
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Gliomas are clinically challenging brain tumors with dismal survival rates due to its infiltrative nature and ineffective standard therapy. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP2) is a pleiotropic oncogenic protein that has both extracellular and intracellular functions. Despite a clear causal role in cancer development, the contributions of intracellular IGFBP2 to tumor development and progression are poorly understood. Here we present evidence that both exogenous IGFBP2 treatment and cellular IGFBP2 overexpression lead to aberrant activation of EGFR, which subsequently activates STAT3 signaling. Furthermore, we demonstrate that IGFBP2 augments the nuclear accumulation of EGFR to potentiate STAT3 transactivation activities, via …

Rest Regulatory Circuit Controls Distinct Oncogenic Properties Of Glioblastoma Stem Cells Through Specific Micrornas, Anantha L Marisetty
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary malignant brain tumor in adults. With an average survival of only 12-16 months the prognosis for GBM patients remains dismal, with less than 5% of patients surviving 5 years. New mechanism-based approaches are necessary for the management of patients with GBM. Many GBM tumors are believed to be caused by self-renewing, glioblastoma-derived stem-like cells (GSCs). These GSCs are resistant to chemo- and radiation therapies, and are believed to be responsible for tumor recurrence. In a recent paper from our lab we have shown that REST, RE1-silencing transcription factor, regulates oncogenic …
Actions Of Pi3k-Delta Inhibitor, Idelalisib, And Its Combination With Bendamustine In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Prexy Modi
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Class I phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase isoforms (α, β, δ, and γ) play a major role in cancer cell growth and survival. PI3K α and β are most studied. PI3K pathway is highly dysregulated in many cancers and aberrant PI3K signaling is associated with oncogene mutations and disease progression in solid tumors and in hematologic malignancies.
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is driven by B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling that promotes B-cell proliferation and survival. PI3K is a critical node in BCR pathway and PI3Kδ has a pivotal role in B-cell development and maintenance and this isoform is over-expressed in many B-cell malignancies, including …
Killer Cell Activation By A Novel Multifunctional Protein: An Immuno/Gene Therapy For Cancer, Ashlee Tietje
Killer Cell Activation By A Novel Multifunctional Protein: An Immuno/Gene Therapy For Cancer, Ashlee Tietje
All Dissertations
One of the characteristics of advanced tumors is the evasion of the immune system. There are multiple methods that tumor cells employ to achieve this including reducing the expression of activating ligands on the cell surface and a shift in the tumor microenvironment toward pro-tumor cytokines. The purpose of this research is to develop a novel bifunctional fusion protein that will target these two deficiencies in the tumor microenvironment and activate killer cells that are already present. The proposed protein combines the extracellular domain of a ligand for the killer cell activating receptor NKG2D and Interleukin-12 (IL-12). It is hypothesized …

Correlation Of Amyloid Beta And Spatial Learning And Memory Deficits On A Thy1-App Mouse Model For Alzheimer's Disease, Amber Lynn Betz
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The McGill-Thy1 APP mouse is a triple transgenic model of Alzheimer disease, which has the mutant amyloid precursor protein to synergistically over-produce amyloid beta plaques. These mice exhibit visuo-spatial learning impairment at 3 months of age and memory impairment at 10-13 months of age in the Morris water maze. To extend these findings mice at 3, 5, and 7 months of age were tested on the Barnes maze. Non-Transgenic and Transgenic mice showed improvement during acquisition. However, 3 month and 5 month McGill Thy1- APP mice showed impaired acquisition learning while 7 month showed a learning and memory deficit compared …

Family Planning, Pregnancy, And Birth In Guatemala: Maya Women And Modern Healthcare, Kelsay Payton
Honors Theses
Within Maya populations in rural Guatemala, childbearing is considered a sacred and spiritual experience, in addition to a physical one. This country is home to some of the highest rates of maternal and infant mortality in Latin America, along with the largest disparities in health care, primarily between the indigenous Maya and ladino women (Schooley 2009). The use of biomedical reproductive services remains surprisingly low among the Maya, while it is continually rising in the ladino populations. To increase the overall reproductive health care in these indigenous communities, attention must be given to the understanding of Maya’s beliefs, therefore enabling …

Estrogen, Bisphenol A, And Bisphenol S: Regulation Of Cathepsin L Activity And Its Relation To Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, Regina M. Powers
Biology Honors Papers
Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to self-destruct. SLE is nine times more frequent in women than in men, and it has been shown that there is a correlation between high estrogen levels and an increased severity of the disease. This raises a concern about environmental estrogens, including Bisphenol A (BPA) which is found in many plastic products in the United States. BPA can be absorbed by the foods and liquids that are held in the plastic containers and then can enter into the human body. Because of its structural similarity to estrogen, …

The Regulation Of Cathepsin L Activity By Estrogen And Bisphenols A & S: Relationship To Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Dylan T. Cuva
Biology Honors Papers
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that is linked to increased levels of estrogen. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental estrogen that may also play a role in SLE. BPA is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, including use in the creation of cans and plastic bottles. This study investigated the role of BPA and other bisphenols on enzyme activity in a murine model for SLE.

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a rare congenital heart defect occurring in fewer than 0.5% of live births in the United States (Fruitman, 2000). It is characterized by a critically underdeveloped left ventricle with accompanying imperfections including septal defects, under-sized aorta, and underdeveloped bicuspid and aortic semilunar valves (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012; CDC, 2013). HLHS is detectable on ultrasound at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy allowing for early diagnosis and potential treatment in utero. While a protocol involving three surgeries exists to treat the condition, there is no cure for HLHS. Even with treatment, many …

The Fossil Record Of Phenotypic Integration And Modularity: A Deep-Time Perspective On Developmental And Evolutionary Dynamics, Anjali Goswami, Wendy J. Binder, Julie Meachen, Robin O'Keefe
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Variation is the raw material for natural selection, but the factors shaping variation are still poorly understood. Genetic and developmental interactions can direct variation, but there has been little synthesis of these effects with the extrinsic factors that can shape biodiversity over large scales. The study of phenotypic integration and modularity has the capacity to unify these aspects of evolutionary study by estimating genetic and developmental interactions through the quantitative analysis of morphology, allowing for combined assessment of intrinsic and extrinsic effects. Data from the fossil record in particular are central to our understanding of phenotypic integration and modularity because …

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Preeclampsia is a perinatal complication of unknown etiology, resulting in 76,000 maternal deaths and 500,000 infant deaths annually1. The Nationwide Children’s Center for Perinatal Research was the first cohort to propose that preeclampsia is rooted in protein misfolding. We aimed to characterize the misfolded protein components of maternal urine samples and to determine if distinct molecular profiles exist for clinical preeclampsia phenotypes. A total of 86 maternal urine samples from Yale-New Haven Hospital were analyzed for this study, from six clinical preeclampsia subphenotypes- pregnant control (n=10), idiopathic proteinuria (n=15), mild preeclampsia (n=14), superimposed preeclampsia (n=12), typical severe preeclampsia …

The Effect Of Red Maple Leaf Toxicosis On Reduced Glutathione Levels In Equine Erythrocytes In Vitro, Madeline A. Rohl
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Red maple leaf toxicosis is an equine blood disorder resulting from the consumption of wilted red maple (Acer rubrum L.) leaves by horses. Compounds within the leaves of red maple have oxidative effects on equine erythrocytes and can cause hemolysis of erythrocytes, the conversion of hemoglobin to methemoglobin, and the production of Heinz bodies. Reduced glutathione is important in the protection of equine erythrocytes from these oxidative events; however, in the presence of red maple toxin, glutathione is rapidly oxidized and is unavailable. The objective of this study is to determine whether the presence of vitamin C alters levels …

Plant essential oils (EO) are used as perfumes, lotions and air fresheners because of their pleasant aromas, but EO also have the ability to elicit changes in mood and behavior. These activities are influenced by the mode of administration and by multiple signaling pathways. The EO aromas from organically grown apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) and passionflower fruit (Passiflora incarnata) were assessed for their effects on cognition and coordination. Participants completed two tasks designed to test working memory and bimanual task efficiency in rooms infused with apple mint, passionflower fruit or control EO. Bimanual coordination was assessed using the Intercept2 program …

Understanding Phylogenies: Constructing And Interpreting Phylogenetic Trees, Joseph L. Staton
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Interpretation of phylogenetic trees is fundamental in understanding the relationships between organisms, their traits or characteristics, their ecology and even their genomic and developmental biology. As trees appear more often in basic texts, many students, and even their teachers, clearly understand little of how they are constructed and even less about what can be inferred from them about the history of the representatives analyzed. Not only are these trees a source of confusion on what they do tell us, often non-specialists infer things wrongly or, worse, others misuse them in an attempt to negate the validity of evolutionary theory. In …

Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Growth And Mycotoxins Production Of Alternaria Alternata, Danny Karlet
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
The ubiquitous genus Alternaria contains many species that are able to invade cereals, oleaginous plants and other crops. Alternaria alternata is considered one of the most important species and can produce several mycotoxins under favourable conditions of temperature and humidity, including the economically important toxins: alternariol (AOH) and alternariol monomethyl ether (AME). The aim of this study was to evaluate the radio-sensitivity of Alternaria alternata spores through different gamma radiation doses. A. alternata growth and the production of AOH and AME were then analyzed. After fungal irradiation with 2 kGy, 5 kGy and 7 kGy, the spores were suspended with …

BACKGROUND: One of the most significant issues surrounding next generation sequencing is the cost and the difficulty assembling short read lengths. Targeted capture enrichment of longer fragments using single molecule sequencing (SMS) is expected to improve both sequence assembly and base-call accuracy but, at present, there are very few examples of successful application of these technologic advances in translational research and clinical testing. We developed a targeted single molecule sequencing (T-SMS) panel for genes implicated in ovarian response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) for infertility.
RESULTS: Target enrichment was carried out using droplet-base multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology (RainDance®) …
