The Song Structure And Repertoire Size Of Daurian Redstarts (Phoenicurus Auroreus) In South Korea, Ju Hyun Lee, Ha Cheol Sung
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The song repertoire across avian species varies considerably in size, and reliable measurement is important in defining its significance as a target in sexual selection. In this study, the song structure and song repertoire size of the Daurian Redstart (Phoenicurus auroreus) in South Korea were investigated. The songs had major syllable variation rather than song type variation. The average song repertoire size from 20 males was 39.9 ± 5.8 (range: 28-50), based on a syllable type that was appropriate for this species. The songs were structured with three distinguishable parts, where song syllables varied most in the syllable part, and …

Dew-Bathing In The Atlantic Forest Endemic Robust Woodpecker Campephilus Robustus (Lichtenstein, 1823) (Aves: Picidae), Paul Smith, Kevin P. Johnson
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The bathing behavior of woodpeckers (Picidae) is almost unknown and the paucity of reports of bathing in the family has led to suppositions that they may do so rarely. An unusual observation of the Atlantic Forest endemic Robust Woodpecker Campephilus robustus dew-bathing socially is reported from Paraguay and discussion of its significance follows. Dew-bathing has been reported for a small number of New World bird families and has often been linked to a shortage of water, but has never been previously reported in New World Picidae. Given the environmental conditions in this humid habitat it is considered that dew-bathing in …

Generalized linear mixed effects models (GLMM) were applied to examine the spatiotemporal variation of …
Application Of Multifactorial Discriminant Analysis In The Morphostructural Differentiation Of Wild And Cultured Populations Of Vieja Azul (Andinoacara Rivulatus), Johanna Caez, Ana Gonzalez, Martin A. Gonzalez, Elena Angon, Jorge M. Rodriguez, Francisco Peña, Cecilio Barba, Antón García
Application Of Multifactorial Discriminant Analysis In The Morphostructural Differentiation Of Wild And Cultured Populations Of Vieja Azul (Andinoacara Rivulatus), Johanna Caez, Ana Gonzalez, Martin A. Gonzalez, Elena Angon, Jorge M. Rodriguez, Francisco Peña, Cecilio Barba, Antón García
Turkish Journal of Zoology
To better determine the ecological variation (body shape and structure) of the Vieja Azul (Andinoacara rivulatus; syn.: Aequidens rivulatus) in northwest Ecuador (Los Ríos Province), 300 specimens of both sexes (150 male and 150 female) were collected from 3 different locations, one from a wild production system and two from fish farm populations in the Quevedo River. Twelve meristic, 26 traditional morphometric, and 32 truss measurements, among 25 anatomical landmarks, were determined. The body weight (BW), total length (TL), eye diameter (ED), dorsal fin ray length (DFRL), and body perimeter 3 (P3) showed significant differences (P < 0.05) between production systems, and sex had significant influence on preanal length (Pre-AL), P3, and body width 2 (LC2). Females showed higher mean values than males in all measurements, except for BW. The Fulton factor differed for both factors considered. The canonical discriminant analysis revealed a percentage of correct assignment of 64.42% for the dataset, 85% and 60.9% for cultured and wild females, and 62.1% and 56.3% for wild and cultured males, respectively, as well as morphometric variation between groups. Results could be attributed to environmental conditions (habitat, temperature, and food). The Mahalanobis test showed greater distances among females than among males. In conclusion, this study provides valuable morphological information on the shape and structure of Andinoacara rivulatus that can be used to characterize and quantify the changes that occur as a consequence of adaptation to a different habitat. The authors hope that the information obtained from the present study will be helpful for fisheries, biologists, and taxonomists.

Induction Of Abnormal Sperm Heads In Small Mammals Under Chronic Ionizing Radiation, Lyudmila Bashlykova, Oksana Raskosha, Natalia Starobor
Induction Of Abnormal Sperm Heads In Small Mammals Under Chronic Ionizing Radiation, Lyudmila Bashlykova, Oksana Raskosha, Natalia Starobor
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The results of this study show a mutagenic effect of low-dose ionizing radiation in male germ cells. The damage of male germ cells was assessed by the frequency of abnormal sperm heads in tundra voles (Microtus oeconomus Pall.), bank voles (Myodes glareolus Schreb.), and field mice (Apodemus agrarius Pall.) from the 30 km exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power station and for laboratory animals (mice and rats) under chronic γ-irradiation. The abnormal sperm head detection method used appeared to be sensitive to conditions of low-dose irradiation and can consequently be recommended as a bioindicator to monitor environmental radiation pollution.

Pelvic And Sacral Size Dimorphism And Allometry In Two Predatory Carnivores With Different Life Histories And Locomotory Adaptations, Alexander Csanady, Peter Krisovsky, Ladislav Hloska
Pelvic And Sacral Size Dimorphism And Allometry In Two Predatory Carnivores With Different Life Histories And Locomotory Adaptations, Alexander Csanady, Peter Krisovsky, Ladislav Hloska
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) of the wolf and the lynx was evaluated for 15 pelvic and sacral variables in 48 specimens from the Western Carpathians. Our data confirmed small male-biased SSD in the pelvic and sacral bones for both species. We suggest that this can be explained by the need for a compromise between requirements for locomotion and giving birth. We also confirmed that significant differences exist between the species in the size of the pelvic and sacral bones. We discuss our findings in light of the species? different life histories.

Because of their feeding habits, which are affected by their ranking in the last steps of the food chain, the teeth of carnivores are subjected to great forces during the breaking up and chewing of food when they are hunting. In this sense, missing teeth and tooth anomalies are common in carnivores. This research was based on an examination of the properties of the tooth structures of 25 wolf specimens collected in Turkey between 2014 and 2018. In this study, the excess and missing teeth, tooth fracture, and root anomalies in the lower and upper jaw of the head skeletons …
