The larvae of Balaustium izmirensis Noei & Ersin sp. nov. were obtained by rearing adults collected from building walls and window ledges in Bornova, İzmir, Turkey. The larva of B. izmirensis Noei & Ersin sp. nov. is described and illustrated. A key to larval species of Balaustium is provided.

The monitoring of Culicidae through faunistic data is important to identify potential vector species of disease and therefore acts as an early warning system. The Balkans have a diverse mosquito fauna that can be an important gateway of potential vector species to Europe, because of the abundance of larval habitats and favorable climatic conditions. Here we present four new records of Culicidae: Aedes (Ochlerotatus) annulipes (Meigen, 1830), Aedes (Ochlerotatus) cantans (Meigen, 1818) for Albania, and Aedes (Ochlerotatus) punctor (Kirby, 1837) for Albania and Serbia. Despite advances in oceanographic investigations in the Indian Ocean, zooplankton ecology is still poorly known from the open waters of the Bay of Bengal. In order to understand the vertical and horizontal distribution of zooplankton in the Bay of Bengal during spring intermonsoon, stratified sampling was conducted using a multiple plankton net. We found that higher zooplankton biomass was often associated with mesoscale cold-core eddies. The biomass in the mixed layer was less in the central bay and the near absence of organisms beneath this layer was attributed to the very low dissolved oxygen levels, including suboxia in the northern …

Revision Of The Taxonomic Status Of Rhodanthidium Sticticum Ordonezi (Dusmet, 1915), An Anthidiine Bee Endemic To Morocco (Apoidea: Anthidiini), Max Kasparek, Patrick Lhomme

Rhodanthidium ordonezi (Dusmet, 1815) is recognized here as a valid species endemic to central and southern Morocco. It has previously been regarded as a subspecies of R. sticticum (Fabricius). The two taxa are in allopatry throughout most of their respective ranges, but probably cooccur in the Middle Atlas Mountains. They are clearly distinguished by their coloration and some aspects of their color patterns. Structural differences are minor, but a multivariate discriminant function analysis of 11 morphometric traits has showed that these are sufficient to assign 82.7% of all specimens correctly. Zooplankton samples were collected from water wells in Kuyubeli village (Kozan, Adana, Turkey). A total of 24 zooplanktonic species were identified, including 13 rotifers, 9 copepods, and 2 cladocerans. The genus Speocyclops was reported for the first time from Turkish inland waters.

This study was performed in order to determine the Braconidae fauna of meadows and forest areas around Gala Lake National Park. Samples were collected from June to October 2011 in selected pasture, forest, and rice agricultural areas. As a result of the study, a total of 38 taxa species belonging to 12 genera within 5 subfamilies were identified. In the present study, scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the ultrastructure of sensilla present on the antennae of male and female Zygogramma bicolorata. The antennae in this insect consist of the scape, pedicel, and nine flagellomeres. Six types of sensilla were identified: sensilla trichodea type 1 and 2 (ST1, ST2), sensilla cavitae (SCa), sensilla chaetica (SCh), and sensilla basiconica type 1 and 2 (SB1, SB2). We report here that earthworm can be used as an in vivo system to prescreen antimitotic compounds. The known antimitotic compound colchicine and the aqueous extract of Acorus calamus L. rhizome were used to examine this system. The antimitotic activity of colchicine and the rhizome extract was confirmed by methods with Allium cepa root tip, earthworm regeneration, and MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazolyl-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide). An earthworm regeneration assay examined the regeneration ability of tissues from amputated regions of the earthworm. During the ongoing partial taxonomic revision of the genus Echinolaophonte on the basis of populations previously collected from various shores of the Turkish coasts, a new species of Echinolaophonte was discovered and named Echinolaophonte mordoganensis sp. nov. The new species is morphologically most closely related to E. minuta and E. veniliae. A New Brachineurini Genus And Two New Species(Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Cecidomyiinae) From Yunnan, China, Ke-Long Jiao, Hao Wang, Wen-Jun Bu

A new free-living genus of the mycophagous tribe Brachineurini, Loborrhizomyia gen. nov., and its type species (Loborrhizomyia phaneroectata sp. nov.) and another new species (Loborrhizomyia aphanata sp. nov.) are described from the Caiyang River Nature Reserve, Pu?er, Yunnan, China. The new genus is characterized in the tribe Brachineurini by the unique gonostylus having a ventral lobe protruding to the distal. The taxonomic status of the new genus and two new species is discussed with a comparison between the other related groups and an updated key to all known Brachineurini genera including the new genus is provided.

Hydroacoustic surveys are one of the prime methods to assess the commercially top-ranked small pelagic stocks. The method relies on acoustic scattering from a fish, which is largely controlled by the size and morphology of the swimbladder. In this study, the changes in the size of the European anchovy swimbladder sampled in the Black Sea were investigated. Ventral cross-sectional area (by photographing the ventrally dissected fish) and volume (by dorsal and lateral X-raying) of the swimbladders were estimated. There is great variation in the conservation status of the last habitats with long-term natural viable populations of the salmon species Hucho hucho in Maramureş Mountains Nature Park, Eastern Carpathians (Romania). According to the specific guidelines for Natura 2000, 42.11% are in good conservation status, 31.57% are of average status, and 26.32% are in a partially degraded condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the histological structure of the kidney of Pelophylax bedriagae and the distribution of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the kidney tissue. The kidneys of P. bedriagae are long, brown, ribbon-like structures covered with connective tissue. Nephrons, the functional units of the kidney, consist of the renal corpuscle, proximal and distal tubules, collecting tubule, and collecting duct. The renal corpuscle is composed of the glomerulus and Bowman?s capsule. There is no structure similar to Henle?s loop, which is found in higher vertebrates. First Record Of The Genus Spilomyia (Diptera, Syrphidae) From The Oriental Region, Aijaz Ahmad Wachkoo, Jeroen Van Steenis, Zubair Ahmad Rather, Jayita Sengupta, Dhriti Banerjee

Spilomyia manicata (Rondani, 1865) is reported as a new genus and species record from India and the Oriental region. A brief diagnosis, images, and comparison with allied species are provided to scientifically validate this new faunal record from the Indian subcontinent and to facilitate its prompt identification. The species shows rare distribution across its range, and various factors pose a threat to the existence of this large pollinator species. Therefore, the documentation of this species assumes significance for devising conservation strategies and sustainable management.

The total number of hemocytes and their morphological characteristics were analyzed in Helix pomatia Linnaeus, 1758, by light microscopy during different phases of hibernation. Three types of hemocytes were identified: hyalinocytes, agranulocytes, and granulocytes. Total number of hemocytes decreased significantly during hibernation. Most intensive changes in cell size, morphology, and appearance of special structures in granulocytes happened during the hibernation period itself. Termination of hibernation coincides with very important granulocyte transformation and the appearance of specific gigantic short-lived cells. The Basra Reed-warbler (Acrocephalus griseldis) is an endangered songbird that breeds in the reed beds of southern Mesopotamia. Hydrological projects, war, and drought have greatly reduced the breeding habitat of this species, making its future uncertain. The first Basra Reed-warbler for Turkey was caught in a mist net on 22 May 2018 at the Aras River Ornithological Research Station, between the provinces of Kars and Iğdır. This represents one of only a few vagrant records in the eastern Mediterranean, and the northernmost record to date. The objective of this study was to describe temporal variations in the diet and parasitological aspects in Liolaemus parvus. In order to examine the diet, we determined the volume, numerousness, and frequency of occurrence for each prey item and calculated the relative importance index. We removed nematodes from the stomach and estimated parasitic indicators. Liolaemus parvus presents an active searching mode. The new species has four horn-like projections located on the antero- and posterodorsal ends of the valves and this unique character separates this species from Comalcandona tressleri. The geographic range of Piseinotecus soussi Tamsouri, Carmona, Moukrim & Cervera, 2014 is here updated, since it was found in two new localities along the Tyrrhenian coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, to confirm the identity of specimens recorded, a DNA barcoding approach was carried out using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as it is the molecular marker mostly used in barcoding analysis in nudibranchs.

We compared the monitoring of small terrestrial mammals among forest stands by pitfalls and snap traps. The captures took place in the Czech Republic in the Moravskoslezske Beskydy Mts. (2007?2012) on 16 plots in adult beech and spruce stands between 910 and 1220 m a.s.l. In total, 14 species of small mammals were captured (12 in the snap traps and 10 in the pitfalls). Snap traps captured the broader species spectrum and they were more successful in capturing larger species of small terrestrial mammals consuming a higher proportion of plant food (mice, and in particular voles). The present study was conducted to elucidate the movement and home range of 7 subadult cinereous vultures Aegypius monachus during the wintering and summering periods using a telemetry system from January 2015 to March 2017 in East Asia. In total, 7053 locations (180?1607 points per bird) were used to analyze the home range size and movement distance of the birds during the wintering, migration, and summering periods. The tracked birds overwintered in South Korea. They migrated between South Korea and Mongolia during spring and autumn, respectively. Psorergates rattus Fain & Goff, 1986 has been found in the brown rat Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769) in Poland.The species has previously been found only once, in the tail base of the brown rat in the United States. In the present case, ten rats from two localities in Poland (Pomerania) were examined and infestation was discovered in 20% of them, with a total of 12 mites found. This is not only the first discovery of the species in Poland and the second globally, but also the first observation of representatives of Psorergatidae in rodents of the genus Rattus in Europe. …

Gonadal sex differentiation proceeds by the interplay of various genes including the transcription factors and secretory factors in a complex network. Dmrt1 and Sox9 were considered to be the essential genes involved in the testicular differentiation in mammals, birds, reptiles, and fishes. Here, we have successfully isolated and characterized cDNAs encoding the Rana chensinensis orthologs of Dmrt1 and Sox9, and we have determined patterns of expression during gonadal differentiation and adult tissues. A reexamination of the tardigrade collection from the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN) in Madrid was carried out. Specimens from the genera Milnesium, Macrobiotus, and Paramacrobiotus were verified in order to provide their correct identification and 15 taxa were identified. Moreover, a list of corrected species identifications from MNCN is provided. Fourteen specimens and 16 eggs, identified previously as Macrobiotus recens, were attributed to a species new for science. Macrobiotus noemiae sp. nov. is most similar to Mac. naskreckii and Mac. recens but it differs from them by details of egg morphology, mainly by the presence of thin flexible …
