A Review Of The Tribe Pimplini Wesmael, 1845 (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae,Pimplinae) From The Carpathians, With New Records For Romania And Ukraine, Oleksandr Varga

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The tribe Pimplini from the Carpathians is reviewed. Itoplectis insignis Perkins, Pimpla arctica Zetterstedt, P. illecebrator (Villers), and Theronia laevigata (Tschek) are new records for Ukraine. Pimpla murinanae Fahringer is a new record for Ukraine and Romania. The high-altitude zone distribution of the Pimplini in the Ukrainian Carpathians is discussed.

In 2015 and 2016 a survey was carried out on the parasitoids of leafhoppers (Hemiptera, Cicadomorpha) feeding on salt cedar trees (Tamarix spp.) growing around Hamoon Lake in the Sistan region (Iran). Among the collected material, a series of dryinid specimens belonging to Mirodryinus atlanticus Olmi, 1984 (Hymenoptera, Dryinidae, Bocchinae) was captured on branches of Tamarix aphylla (L.) Karst. and Tamarix stricta Boiss., infested by Opsius versicolor (Distant) (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae). The subfamily Bocchinae and the genus Mirodryinus Ponomarenko, 1972 are new records for Iran. Color And Pattern Variation Of The Balkan Whip Snake,Hierophis Gemonensis (Laurenti, 1768), Daniel Jablonski, Marton Szabolcs, Aleksandar Simovic, Edvard Mizsei

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In the present paper color and pattern variations of Hierophis gemonensis, a snake with little morphological variation, are described. For the first time, partially melanistic individuals were observed and described for this species. The identity of one of these snakes was corroborated by genetic means. Taxonomical circumstances and environmental causes of this color and pattern variation are discussed.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different temperatures, i.e. 11 °C and 21 °C, in conditions of medium relative humidity on the rate of awakening of Vertigo moulinsiana after hibernation and its activity during the following 7 days. Oneway ANOVA did not show statistically significant differences in timings of awakening and activity between individuals kept at 11 °C and 21 °C during the first day of the study. Heterochromatin Distribution And Localization Of Nors In The 2n = 48cytotypes Of Nannospalax Xanthodon And N. Ehrenbergi, Ati̇lla Arslan, Jan Zima

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We compared the C-banding pattern and the NOR distribution in 3 populations of N. xanthodon and N. ehrenbergi with 48 chromosomes from Turkey, with the aim to reveal variations between and within species. We have found distinct variation in the C-banding and the NOR distribution pattern among the 3 populations compared; each of them possessed its own specific chromosomal features. However, it is not possible to distinguish between intra- and interspecific variation, and the observed patterns cannot be utilized for unequivocal species recognition.

The Malpighian tubules are responsible for excretion and osmoregulation in insects. The Malpighian system consists of tubules that are closed at the distal end and extend from the point of junction of the midgut and hindgut. This organ helps the water and electrolyte balance of the internal metabolism by filtration with absorption of water and soluble materials as mineral salts from the hemolymph. Adult female individuals of the nematode Mesomermis devii sp. nov. (Nematoda: Mermithidae) have been described. The host organism is not determined. The individuals were isolated from moist guano obtained in the dark zone of Devi Cave (West Georgia). A new pseudoscorpion species, Neobisium (Neobisium) tothi sp. nov., is described from Hungary and Romania. In addition, Neobisium (N.) noricum Beier, 1939 is reported from Hungary for the first time. Hedychridium Monochroum And Chrysis Lanceolata (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae)- Two Species Of Cuckoo Wasps Reared From Nests Of Solierella Compedita (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) In Southeastern Ukraine, Kateryna Martynova

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The crabronid wasp Solierella compedita (Piccioli, 1969) occupied artificial trap-nests in southeastern Ukraine. Cuckoo wasps Hedychridium monochroum du Buysson, 1888 and Chrysis lanceolata Linsenmaier, 1959 were reared from its nests. Thus, the host-parasitoid association between S. compedita and Ch. lanceolata is recorded for the first time and the association between S. compedita and H. monochroum is confirmed. The larva of H. monochroum and the minute cocoon structure of both reared chrysidids are described. Wide color variability is shown for H. monochroum. The feeding habits of larvae for both chrysidids are discussed.

The aim of this study is to review the brachypterous species within the genus Alloxysta Förster, 1869. The known brachypterous species of Alloxysta have been compared with fully winged species in order to establish hypotheses regarding dimorphism for wing length and shape. This analysis is based only on the morphological features shared between species; breeding and genetic analyses will be necessary to test and refine these hypotheses. Capoeta aydinensis sp. nov. is described from the Büyük Menderes River and the streams Tersakan, Dalaman, and Namnam in southwestern Turkey. In spite of its inherent physiological importance, studies on the occurrence, characteristics, and modulation of amylase in euryhaline crabs are lacking. We investigated the occurrence of amylase forms and the effect of acclimation to different salinities on their number and made a partial purification and characterization of the major form present in the hepatopancreas of Neohelice granulata. Zymogram analysis revealed 5 amylase forms in crabs acclimated to 35 psu (seawater) and 37 psu, and an additional band at 10 psu, but with a major form (29 kDa) in all cases, which was partially purified and characterized. To explore the role of thyroid hormones in organ remodeling during the metamorphosis of amphibians, the cDNAs of two thyroid hormone receptors (TRα and TRβ) in Rana chensinensis were identified. The 1257 bp of rcTRα cDNA encoding 418 amino acids and the 1122 bp of rcTRβ cDNA encoding 373 amino acids were cloned. Their polypeptide sequences contain two highly conserved cysteine-rich zinc fingers in the DNA-binding domain, while rcTRβ is 42 amino acids shorter in its A/B domain when compared with rcTRα. The present limnological investigation was conducted to study zooplankton diversity in municipal wastewater-contaminated ponds in light of their contributions to the ecosystem. It is revealed by the present study that the physicochemical factors of the study sites are regulated by wastewater input and anthropogenic activities. A good number of zooplankton species thrived in these ponds (22 species of zooplankton, including 14 species of Rotifera, 3 species of Copepoda, 4 species of Cladocera, and a single species of Ostracoda), which suggests that the municipal wastewater, loaded with various nutrients, has influenced the zooplankton diversity and abundance. The concept of species richness is currently the most basic and most often used parameter in quantitative assessments of biodiversity. The species richness of Lumbricidae was investigated in East Serbia, one of the highly complex areas in the eastern and central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Our database included 2615 individuals from a total of 54 species. Quantification of species richness was done by using the observed number of species and richness estimators. The current work was aimed at studying the biology of Axinoscymnus apioides Kuznetsov & Ren (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) under different temperature regimes. These studies were performed at 6 constant temperature regimes (17, 20, 23, 26, 29, and 32 °C) under laboratory conditions in which A. apioides was fed with Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) nymphs on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis plants. We present a method for estimating nesting population size in a passerine bird based on counts of active nests, which can provide more accurate estimates on true population size than other methods. We surveyed 5 different reed habitat types in a region of Serbia in 2009-2011 to estimate the population size of the Great Reed Warbler. This study presents information about the year-round phenology of bats of temperate zones in a city area for the first time. In total, 967 individuals of 5 bat species (Nyctalus noctula [87.5%], Eptesicus serotinus [10.6%], Pipistrellus kuhlii [0.8%], Vespertilio murinus [0.9%], and Plecotus auritus [0.1%]) were recorded during 2013 in Kharkiv. We have characterized the endangered Punjab urial via its interferon alpha-A gene. DNA extraction was done from blood, followed by PCR and sequencing using a 3130xl genetic analyzer. Single nucleotide polymorphism and phylogenetic analyses were performed with BioEdit 7.0.9.0 and MEGA 6.1. Chaetopleura hennahi (Gray, 1828) is a chiton species characterized by its low profile, a comparatively large and wide body with reddish brown valves, and the presence of short hairs only in the rather narrow mantle. This rare species has been previously cited from Peru and Chile, with a dubious record near Ringdove Inlet in Canal Smyth, southern Chile; however, no field records have confirmed its presence in Chile. Tardigrade studies in Poland have been carried out for more than a century and to date, 102 species have been reported from this central European country. This constitutes nearly 9% of all known species within the phylum. In this paper, Eupithecia opistographata Dietze, 1906 is reported as new for the fauna of Turkey, and three rare species (E. brunneata Staudinger, 1900; E. dearmata Dietze, 1904; and E. marasa Wehrli, 1932) are presented as second records on the basis of specimens collected in the mountainous areas of Siirt Province and Şirvan District, southeastern Turkey. The adults and the male genitalia of the species are illustrated.

This study was carried out on a young European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) caught in the sea in Akçay, Balıkesir, in August 2015. The lice collected from the European Shag were put into 70% alcohol solution and were mounted to slides with Canada balsam after being made transparent in 10% potassium hydroxide. The lice Eidmanniella pellucida and Pectinopygus brevicornis were determined as a result of the microscopic examination of the 54 louse specimens. The phytophagous chalcid wasp Bruchophagus sophorae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eurytomidae) is redescribed and illustrated. B. sophorae is recorded for the first time in Turkey and France, from seeds of Styphnolobium japonicum, and from Kazakhstan, from seeds of a new host plant, Sophora alopecuroides. New data on the biology, the stages of oviposition, and the distribution are given. Details of the oviposition of B. sophorae into the pods of S. japonicum are described for the first time.

Genetic markers are a useful tool for bird population monitoring, especially when combined with ringing data, and particularly so in vulnerable species. This study compared the effectiveness of two DNA extraction methods: a standard protocol and a commercially available kit. The molecular sex-typing was performed using PCR-based methods with a 2550F/2718R set of primers in three species of herons: Great Egret, Purple Heron, and Grey Heron. Genomic DNA was isolated from feathers, eggshells, and eggshell swabs from 26 individuals. Overall, better DNA yields and purity were obtained by using the standard protocol isolation method. A catalogue of the terrestrial Eudrilidae and Megascolecidae is provided, with 10 genera and 18 species reported to date from South America. In addition, we provide the valid names, their synonyms, and the original citation. Eudrilidae and Megascolecidae contain members that have a global distribution, probably as a result of human dispersion. The species of eudrilid Eudrilus eugeniae is very common in other regions with a tropical climate, while the megascolecid species Amynthas gracilis is by far the most common earthworm in large cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
