Six species of Trematoda (Prosthodendrium ascidia, Prosthodendrium longiforme, Lecithodendrium linstowi, Plagiorchis muelleri, Plagiorchis vespertilionis, and Plagiorchis koreanus) of Myotis aurescens from Bursa Province, Turkey, were examined for DNA sequencing of the 28S ribosomal gene region. A partial sequence of the 28S ribosomal gene from digenean species was studied using BLAST and found to be a useful region for helminth species diagnosis.

Seasonal And Ontogenetic Diet Shift Of Two Sympatric Cyprinid Fish Species From The Temperate Karamenderes River, Çanakkale, Turkey, Şükran Yalçin Özdi̇lek

Diet composition and feeding relationships of two cyprinid species, Squalius cii and Barbus oligolepis, from the Karamenderes River, northwestern Turkey, were assessed over a 1-year period. Both species were omnivorous and fed mostly on benthic plant materials (particularly algae) and insects. The diet of B. oligolepis primarily comprised Bacillariophyceae, Diptera larvae, and other insects, while that of S. cii comprised filamentous algae (Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyceae), insect larvae, and adults. The Effect Of Pistacia Terebinthus Extract On Lipid Peroxidation, Glutathione,Protein, And Some Enzyme Activities In Tissues Of Rats Undergoing Oxidative Stress, Semra Türkoğlu, Sai̇t Çeli̇k, Serhat Keser, İsmai̇l Türkoğlu, Ökkeş Yilmaz

This study measures the effects of Pistacia terebinthus flower extract on the amounts of lipid peroxidation (LPO), total protein, glutathione, and enzyme activities in blood. It also measures the effects of the plant extract on glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities and it arrives at the conclusion that GSH-Px activity significantly increased in the Pistacia terebinthus-hydrogen peroxide group (P < 0.0001) and SOD activity meaningfully increased in the Pistacia terebinthus (P < 0.05) and Pistacia terebinthus-hydrogen peroxide (P < 0.0001) groups. It is also found that P. terebinthus extract has protective effects against LPO exerted in the kidney, brain, and lungs (P < 0.0001). The positive effects of P. terebinthus extract are also found on the levels of glutathione and total protein in all organs, except for the level of glutathione in the spleen and brain, and the increase of glutathione and total protein (P < 0.0001). These results are parallel to the effect of the extract used in this study on the LPO levels in tissues and they show that the plant species used in the study has positive effects on the activities of antioxidant molecules as well as protective effects against LPO.

Spatial And Temporal Variations Of Soft Bottom Polychaetes Of Sinop Peninsula(Southern Black Sea) With New Records, Güley Kurt Şahi̇n, Ertan Dağli, Murat Sezgi̇n

The soft bottom polychaete community was examined seasonally at eight stations between August 2009 and July 2010. A total of 76 species belonging to 27 families were identified in the Sinop Peninsula (southern Black Sea), of which 23 species are new records for the Black Sea fauna and 7 species for the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Syllidae was the best represented family in the research area and contributed 15.78% of the total fauna. The phenology of Pulvinaria floccifera infesting common holly was studied from June 2009 to October 2011 in Central Poland. Live specimens were most abundant on the leaves in July and August, while dead individuals were most numerous in winter and early spring each year. The scale completed one generation per year in the field and both the second and third instar nymphs overwintered. In this study we analyzed changes of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) assemblages in 50 springs along the Cvrcka River mainstream in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Springs were divided into 3 groups: rheocrene, rheopsammocrene, and piped springs. The objectives of our survey were to analyze changes in EPT communities in response to some environmental factors and anthropogenic activities. Twenty-eight morphologically distinct taxa were identified. EPT diversity was positively correlated to discharge and areal coverage of sand and stones but negatively correlated with areal coverage of algae. Seasonal Changes In Tawny Owl (Strix Aluco) Diet In An Oak Forest In Eastern Ukraine, Yehor Yatsiuk, Yuliya Filatova

We analyzed seasonal changes in Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) diet in a broadleaved forest in Eastern Ukraine over 6 years (2007-2012). Annual seasons were divided as follows: December-mid-April, April-June, July-early October, and late October-November. In total, 1648 pellets were analyzed. The most important prey was the bank vole (Myodes glareolus) (41.9%), but the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) (17.8%) dominated in some seasons. According to trapping results, the bank vole was the most abundant rodent species in the study region. The most diverse diet was in late spring and early summer. A Taxonomic Study On The Families Lecanidae And Lepadellidae (Rotifera: Monogononta) Of Turkey And Three New Records For Turkish Inland Waters, Ahmet Bozkurt

In this study, 39 rotifer species from the families Lecanidae and Lepadellidae were identified after examination of samples collected from 47 different localities in Turkey. Lecane acanthinula, L. thalera, and L. unguitata are new records for the Turkish rotifer fauna.

Aquatic species of Tardigrada usually inhabit submerged plants or sediment but they are also known as associated with other animals, like barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia) or sea cucumbers (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea). In sponges collected from Lake Ohrid (Macedonia) we found individuals of two tardigrade taxa: Isohypsibius sp. and Dactylobiotus sp. This paper provides the first record of Tardigrada from Macedonia (Lake Ohrid) and is the first report of these animals on sponges.

Demicryptochironomus (Demicryptochironomus) vulneratus (Zetterstedt, 1838) was collected as a total of 4 individuals from the Garzan Brook, Batman Brook (Beşeri), and Tigris River (Hasankeyf) and recorded as a new chironomid larva species for the Turkish potamofauna. The species was identified morphologically under light microscope and photographed with a photomicroscope. In addition, the taxonomic features of the species were illustrated schematically with a scale.

In this study, a group of specimens from the family Geometridae preserved in the Nazife Tuatay Plant Protection Museum is examined. The specimens were originally collected from Ordu, Turkey. As a result of this work, two new records for the Geometridae fauna of Turkey, namely Asthena anseraria (Herrich-Schaffer, [1855]) and Eupithecia selinata Herrich-Schaeffer, 1861 are given. Adult and genitalia figures of the species are presented.

The taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of the recently recorded smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) population from the island of Bozcaada (Çanakkale, Turkey) is clarified on the basis of morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. The L. vulgaris population from Bozcaada presents body proportions and morphological features of subsp. schmidtlerorum, such as small body length, absence of the tail filament, and dorsal crest with pointed free margin. Similarly, phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences (ND4, 16S rRNA) place the Bozcaada population within Clade E of the recent L. vulgaris phylogeny, which consists of L. v. schmidtlerorum populations.

Cooccurrence of Schistosoma haematobium, other trematodes, Chaetogaster limnaei limnaei, and Daubaylia potomaca was investigated in Bulinus globosus collected at Nike Lake from October 2011 to September 2012. The snail sizes as well as the numbers of these organisms were recorded. Single infections of S. haematobium, other trematodes, C. limnaei limnaei, and D. potomaca were 0.3%, 46.38%, 1.03%, and 2.66%. Coinfection of S. haematobium-C. limnaei limnaei was 0.3% while that of S. haematobium-other trematodes was 0.15%. Oocyte development in the ovary of the black cricket, Melanogryllus desertus, was investigated. In the panoistic ovary of M. desertus, oocyte developmental stages based on their histological properties were classified as previtellogenic, vitellogenic, and maturation. Oocytes were encircled by follicle cells through the developmental stages. In the previtellogenic stage, a few vacuoles were observed just beneath the oolemma. At the beginning of the vitellogenic stage, subdivided into early-, middle-, and late-vitellogenic stages, yolk granules within the oocyte were initially observed just beneath the oolemma. We describe here 8 instars (from A-8 through A-1) of the postembryonic development of the Cyprididae Chlamydotheca arcuata (Sars, 1901) from hatching to sexually mature individuals. To study the development of this species, cultures of adult parthenogenetic female specimens were established and maintained in the laboratory. The ostracod specimens were collected from temporary ponds and streams in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. This report provides a description of the chaetotaxy of each limb along with detailed illustrations. Photographs of eggs and carapaces were taken using scanning electron microscopy. In order to identify the plant-parasitic nematodes associated with Berberis vulgaris, Crocus sativus, and Ziziphus zizyphus, 360 soil samples were collected from the rhizosphere of these plants in the South Khorasan Province of Iran during 2012-2014. Among the identified species, Tylenchorhynchus zeae Sethi and Swarup, 1968 of Telotylenchidae Siddiqi, 1960 is a new record from Iran and the isolate is described and illustrated based on morphological, morphometric, and molecular characteristics. The new species Eustenomacidius (Caucasohelops) egeuniversitatis sp. n. is described from Southeastern Anatolia (Van Province). The species differs from two other representatives of the subgenus Caucasonotus Nabozhenko, 2006 by the absence of temple grooves (lower aspect of eye having a posterior ventral groove) and shiny body without microsculpture. It is the first record of the genus in Turkey. Data on bionomics and a key to species of the subgenus Caucasonotus are given. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (cox1) barcoding regions of type specimens were also sequenced and uploaded to GenBank.

The lack of detailed and precise reports about the presence of corsac fox has caused ambiguities about the presence or absence or even extinction status of this species in its distribution range in Iran. Therefore, this is one of the complicated issues in Iran?s wildlife fauna and there has been no clear scientific answer to this question to date. Effects Of Aluminum, Copper, And Titanium Nanoparticles Onsome Blood Parameters In Wistar Rats, Esi̇n Gülnaz Canli, Mustafa Canli

In this study, Al2O3, CuO, and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were individually administered to 60 mature female rats via oral gavage (0, 0.5, 5, and 50 mg/kg b.w. per day) for 14 days and then responses of ATPases in the erythrocytes, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and liver enzyme (alkaline phosphatase, ALP; alanine transaminase, ALT; aspartate transaminase, AST) levels in the serum were determined. There were sharp decreases in Na,K-ATPase activity in the erythrocytes following NP exposures. All doses of CuO caused significant (P < 0.05) inhibitions in Na,K-ATPase activity (up to 94%), while only higher doses of Al2O3 and TiO2 inhibited (76%-80%) the activity of Na,K-ATPase. Oppositely, the activities of Ca-ATPase (up to 274%) and Mg-ATPase (up to 290%) increased significantly following TiO2 exposures. TOS levels significantly increased following Al2O3 (167%) and CuO (240%) exposures, though TAS levels did not change significantly in any of the exposure groups. The levels of ALP, AST, and ALT increased following NP administrations. Ti-NP increased the levels of all liver enzymes in the serum (up to 84%), while Al-NP (58%) and Cu- NP (43%) increased only ALP levels. The present study demonstrated evidence of the toxic effects of NPs, as they altered the measured parameters in the blood, and suggests further research to better understand the environmental fate of NPs.

The trophic structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in three different types of running water bodies subjected to varying degrees of anthropogenic pressure was analyzed. A seasonal survey was conducted at three Bulgarian rivers in 2011. An adapted version of the multihabitat sampling method was applied along with measuring physical and chemical variables. The ecological status was defined by means of biotic and trophic indexes. The parasitoid complex associated with Phyllonorycter coryli and P. nicellii (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) leaf miners on hazel in Poland was examined and the contribution in the parasitoid community as well as the parasitization level of two species was defined. Current Status Of Coral Reefs In Tioman Island, Peninsular Malaysia, Saad Shahbudin, Khodzori Fikri Akmal, Salleh Faris, Mohammad-Noor Normawaty, Yukinori Mukai

The present study aimed to determine the current status of corals using the coral video transect (CVT) method in the east coast, west coast, and isolated areas of Tioman Island, Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 65 genera from 21 families of corals were identified, from which the scleractinian corals of Acropora, Montipora, and Porites were dominant in the coral assemblages. Nine reef sites were categorised as having 'good' (51.4%-60.3%) coral condition and four reef sites as having 'fair' (37.6%-49.2%) coral condition. A new species, Conifaber manicoba n. sp., is described based on a female from the state of Pará, Brazil. It is characterized as being the smallest uloborid female and by having the thoracic region posteriorly depressed.

New Data On Hahnia C.L. Koch, 1841 From Crimea (Aranei: Hahniidae), Mykola Kovblyuk, Zoya Kastrygina, Yuri Marusik

Four species of Hahnia are recorded from Crimea: H. helveola Simon, 1875; H. nava (Blackwall, 1841); H. ononidum Simon, 1875; and H. pusilla C.L. Koch, 1841. Two species, namely H. ononidum and H. pusilla, are recorded from Crimea for the first time. Crimea is the easternmost point of the known range for H. helveola. Illustrations, diagnoses, distribution data, habitats, and seasonal dynamics of activity are presented.

The characteristic features of Storchia mehrvari Bagheri & Gheblealivand, a new record for the Turkish fauna, are redescribed based on the Turkish specimens. In addition, asymmetric abnormalities in setae on the anogenital area occurring in some adult females are discussed and illustrated.

The present faunistic study of blood sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) has resulted in the recording of the 4 species: Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burmeister, 1839); Ho. affinis (Burmeister, 1839); Polyplax serrata (Burmeister, 1839), and Haematopinus apri Goureau, 1866 newly reported for the fauna of Croatia. Thirteen species and 2 subspecies are currently known from Croatia, belonging to 6 families. Linognathidae and Haematopinidae are the best represented families, with four species each, followed by Hoplopleuridae and Polyplacidae with two species each, Pediculidae with two subspecies, and Pthiridae with one species. Larval and adult material collected from July 2012 to July 2013 and previously collected larval material were evaluated taxonomically to determine the Chironomidae (Diptera) fauna of Kırklareli Province. Two genera, Coelopencyrtus Timberlake, 1919 and Mayrencyrtus Hincks, 1944, are reported here for the first time from Transcaucasia. Fourteen new records of encyrtid species from Georgia are reported. Except for 4 species (Bothriothorax aralius (Walker, 1837); B. clavicornis (Dalman, 1820); B. trichops Thomson, 1876; and Cheiloneurus submuticus Thomson, 1876), all species are recorded for the first time from Transcaucasia.
