First Record Of The Burrowing Goby, Trypauchen Vagina (Actinopterygii: Gobiidae), From The Iranian Coast Of The Persian Gulf, Mohammad Sadegh Alavi Yeganeh, Abdollah Deyrestani, Edward O. Murdy

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The burrowing goby, Trypauchen vagina, is recorded for the first time from the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. Only one other record is known for this species from the Persian Gulf; that record is from Kuwait. The subject record is a new addition to the ichthyofauna of Iran resulting from four T. Vagina specimens being collected from north of Qeshm Island in the Khoran Strait (26°56?N, 55°54?E) in the Persian Gulf.

Zooplankton Abundance, Biomass, And Size Structure In The Coastal Waters Of The Northeastern Mediterranean Sea, Tuba Kurt, Sevi̇m Polat

Zooplankton was studied seasonally between 2009 and 2011 in İskenderun Bay in order to determine temporal variations in abundance, biomass, and size structure and their relationships with environmental factors. Zooplankton sampling was performed vertically using a WP-2 net (200-µm). A total of 30 zooplankton taxonomic groups were identified. Cladocera was the dominant group, and together with Copepoda and Appendicularia constituted approximately 90% of zooplankton. In this study, a total of 36 (12♂♂, 18♀♀, 6 juveniles) Hemidactylus turcicus specimens, caught in the vicinity of Muğla (Turkey) between 2006 and 2011, were evaluated using the skeletochronology method. The mean snout-to-vent length (SVL) was measured as 28.45 ± 1.92 mm for juveniles, 50.53 ± 1.06 mm for males, and 51.1 ± 0.75 mm for females. When the cross-sections were examined, the age range was determined to be 4-8 years in the males and 4-9 years in the females. Individuals reach sexual maturity in 2-3 years. The water bears (Tardigrada) from Colombia are rather poorly known; thus, the aim of this research was to study the composition of tardigrade fauna inhabiting epiphytic and rock mosses in a high Andean forest in Guatavita. A 25-m2 plot was delimited and 6 randomly chosen trees with epiphytic mosses were sampled. Twelve samples of epiphytic mosses and 6 of rock mosses were collected and examined. A total of 277 specimens and 6 eggs of 8 tardigrade taxa were found in these samples. Field margins act as shelters for different arthropod taxa in agricultural fields. Several factors may promote seasonal changes in arthropod communities, especially in regions with marked seasonality, such as Mediterranean areas. Epigeic arthropods were sampled from the margins of fields located in northwestern Portugal during 2 contrasting seasons, spring and autumn. Organisms were identified to family or order level and seasonal variation in arthropod communities was evaluated. Roost characteristics of Indian flying fox Pteropus giganteus at the Jinnah (n = 1052) and Lalazar (n = 40) gardens in Lahore were observed for a period of 1 year to find roost preferences in these bats. The Jinnah garden harbors 4119 trees belonging to 46 families, 103 genera, and 132 species, of which 44 trees belonging to 17 families, 19 genera, and 21 species served as bat roosts. The reproduction, postnatal development, and social behaviors of the Transcaucasian mole vole (Ellobius lutescens) were studied in the laboratory in 2012/2013. The collected voles were kept in glass cages in captivity conditions and observations were made throughout the year. The litter size, gestation period, neonate weight, eye-opening, weaning, and earliest sexual maturity age were observed. Pups were born with 'nipple-seizing incisors'. These incisors were different from those of adults. The molars and normal incisor eruption appeared after 19-21 days. Females have three pairs of nipples. The relationships between size (length and width) of the lagenar (asteriscus) and the utricular (lapillus) otoliths and body length for five cyprinid fish species, freshwater bream Abramis brama, white bream Blicca bjoerkna, Prussian carp Carassius gibelio, brond-snout Chondrostoma regium, and rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus, collected from Lake Ladik from November 2009 through October 2010, are presented. The right and left side measurements of otoliths were pooled in all cases except asteriscus length in Prussian carp. In the present study, the effects of deltamethrin on cell-mediated immune response and genotoxic damage of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were investigated. Different concentrations of deltamethrin (5, 20, 50, 100, and 150 µg) were administered to G. mellonella at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. Five types of hemocytes were identified in G. mellonella: prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, granulocytes, spherulocytes, and oenocytes. Total hemocyte counts (THCs) were significantly affected by deltamethrin. From November 2013 to March 2014, 14 female specimens of the nonindigenous penaeid species northern brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus were caught in Thermaikos Gulf and Nestos estuaries (northern Aegean Sea), as well as one male in the Argolikos Gulf (central Aegean Sea) and 1 female in the Ionian Sea, further confirming their expansion range in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Along with the external morphology of the specimens, sequencing analysis of the 16S rDNA gene of mtDNA confirmed the species identification. Recognition of large mature individuals strongly supports that the already established species in the Greek seas could be efficiently reproduced.

Some Morphological Characteristics And Neonatal Weights Of Reintroduced Gazelle (Gazella Subgutturosa) In Turkey, Şükrü Gürler, Faruk Bozkaya, Deni̇z Özüt, Mustafa Durmuş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The aim of this study was to determine birth weights, body measurements, and phenotypic correlations in order to characterize the gazelle population raised in Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey. For this purpose, body measurements of 93 adult gazelles (54 ♀, 39 ♂) and 41 young gazelles (17 ♀, 24 ♂) were carried out, and correlations between the measurements were calculated. Additionally, birth weights of 47 newborn gazelle calves (22 ♀, 25 ♂) were determined. Mean body weights of adult and young females and males were 13.86 ± 0.76 kg and 19.39 ± 0.92 kg (P < 0.001) and 8.83 ± 0.14 kg and 10.74 ± 0.17 kg (P < 0.01), respectively. In all groups highly positive correlations between body weight and chest circumference were detected. Birth weights of female and male newborn calves were found to be 1.84 ± 0.02 kg and 1.95 ± 0.04 kg, respectively. Differences in birth weights of female and male newborn calves were not statistically significant. The results indicated that the gazelles reared in Turkey were similar to both G. s. subgutturosa and G. s. marica. In order to develop an efficient conservation program, further genetic studies are required for determining the taxonomical status of the gazelle population studied.

The seasonality of abundance and live/dead compositions of copepods was studied in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. Zooplankton, chlorophyll-a, and PO4 sampling was performed on a monthly basis from March 2006 to February 2007 at both a coastal station and an open water station. At the coastal station, high phytoplankton biomass was driven by PO4 input from the Lamas River. On annual average, copepod abundance was 53,075 and 140,227 ind. m-2 at the coastal and open water stations, respectively. Forty-seven species belonging to 7 genera of Alticini are presented based on the investigations conducted on Davraz Mountain (Isparta). Host plant relationships of 24 species established from the area are listed. Brassicaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Lamiaceae seem to be the most preferred host plant families among others. Altitudinal gradients are an important variable in testing the life history traits (e.g., longevity, age at maturity, and body size) of organisms. In this study, the life history traits of the Anatolian lizard Apathya cappadocica were examined from 3 populations from different altitudes (Kilis, 697 m; Şanlıurfa, 891 m; Diyarbakır, 1058 m) from southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Age structure was determined by using skeletochronology. This study was carried out to determine the spider fauna in barley and wheat fields of Northern Cyprus. It was conducted in 36 cereal fields of 24 villages in the Lefkoşa, Girne, Güzelyurt, Gazimağusa, and İskele districts in the years 2012 and 2013. In the study, the Oxyopidae (2), Thomisidae (5), Salticidae (2), Araneidae (3), Philodromidae (2), Clubionidae (3), and Theridiidae (1) families from Araneae were determined. Seventeen of the 18 species, excluding Kochiura aulica (C. L. Koch), were found for the first time and included in the fauna of Northern Cyprus.

A survey on freshwater oligochaetes was conducted between October 2011 and June 2013 in selected wetlands of the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shimoga districts of Karnataka, India. In this study, 260 wetlands were sampled and examined for the presence of microdriles. Sixteen species of aquatic oligochaetes were recorded. Of these, 10 species belonged to the family Naididae (monophyletic) and 6 species to the family Pristinidae. The species' distribution patterns in different water bodies and habitat specificity (if any) in the study area are presented.

Five gall midge species were identified as new records for the fauna of Iran from the Joghatay region of Razavi Khorasan Province, NE Iran. These species are Campylomyza flavipes Meigen, 1818 (Micromyinae); Micromya lucorum Rondani, 1840 (Micromyinae); Rabdophaga salicis (Schrank, 1803) (Cecidomyiinae); Rhopalomyia efremovi Fedotova, 1999 (Cecidomyiinae); and Rhopalomyia monogynasphaera Fedotova, 1999 (Cecidomyiinae). As many parts of the country have not been studied in terms of Cecidomyiidae fauna, the gall midge fauna of Iran will be increased considerably with further research.

Current data on the distribution and ecology of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Turkey are limited. Furthermore, lynx in the Caucasus region are likely to represent a subspecies of the Eurasian lynx, the Caucasian lynx (L. l. dinniki). Throughout its range, lynx increasingly face threats due to human activity, with habitat loss and prey depletion being of particular concern in eastern Turkey. In total, 626 individuals of Alburnus mossulensis and 586 individuals of Acanthobrama marmid were collected monthly from Karakaya Dam Lake on the upper Euphrates River. The gonadosomatic index, somatic condition, oocyte size, and fecundity were calculated on a monthly basis. Reading of scales indicated that the maximum age was 4+ years for A. mossulensis and A. marmid. Changes In Abundance And Community Structure Of The Zooplankton Population During The 2008 Mucilage Event In The Northeastern Marmara Sea, Melek İşi̇ni̇bi̇li̇r Okyar, Funda Üstün, Deni̇z Ayşe Orun

The composition and abundance of zooplankton and the corresponding environmental conditions were investigated during the 2008 mucilage event (April-December 2008) in the Marmara Sea. As a result, 46 zooplanktonic taxa were identified. Copepods and cladocerans were generally the most abundant groups. Mnemiopsis leidyi had a significant seasonality, and abundance was related to fluctuations in temperature and salinity. The most important species were Acartia clausi and Penilia avirostris, but these species did not reach their usual autumn maximum. As a result, the mucilage event in 2008 caused significant shifts in zooplankton abundance and community structure in the Marmara Sea.

Sexual Dimorphism In Trachylepis Vittata (Olivier, 1804) (Sauria: Scincidae) In The Zagros Mountains, Western Iran, Nasrullah Rastegar-Pouyani, Razieh Fattahi

We describe sexual dimorphism in coloration, size, and shape in 48 specimens (19 males and 29 females) of the bridled skink, Trachylepis vittata (Olivier, 1804), collected from western regions of the Iranian Plateau. For the analyses, we used 29 metric and 9 meristic characters. Our study showed the existence of slight sexual size dimorphism in body and head size between the sexes. Males had significantly smaller heads and narrower bodies than females. Furthermore, males and females were different in the structure of the cloaca. The possible scenarios behind sexual dimorphism in this lizard are discussed.

We studied karyotype and chromosomal characteristics of 3 species of five-toed jerboa from central Iran, including Allactaga firouzi, A. williamsi, and A. elater. This study revealed that the 3 species possessed a diploid number of 48 chromosomes. The first pair of chromosomes was significantly larger than other chromosomes in all 3 species. The total length of the haploid genome of Allactaga elater was longer than those of the other 2 species, and most of the chromosomes of the 3 species were metacentric.
