Twelve Oak Gall Wasp Species (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae) New To The Turkish Fauna, Serap Mutun, Serdar Di̇nç

This study was conducted to contribute to the Turkish oak gall wasp fauna (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). Oak cynipid galls were collected between 2011 and 2013 from different regions of Turkey; we found that Andricus assarehi, A. Coriariformis, A. Csokai, A. Glandulae, Andricus legitimus, A. Paradoxus, A. Sadeghii, A. Serotinus, A. Stellatus, A. Trotteri, Cynips longiventris, and Trigonaspis megaptera were new to the Turkish Cynipidae fauna. A new distribution range is also provided for the previously recorded gall wasp species Andricus pseudoaries.

Podothrips: First Record From Iran With A New Species (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae), Kambiz Minaei

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Podothrips erami Minaei sp. Nov. İs described and illustrated from Fars Province in southern Iran. This is the first record of the genus from Iran. The new species is bicolored and conforms with P. Denticeps Hood and P. Distinctus Ananthakrishnan in bearing a lateral forward-directed tooth behind the compound eyes.

The lacertid lizard Podarcis tauricus tauricus is recorded from Yörükköy, Düzce Province, in the western Black Sea region. With the record of the present study, the known distribution area of the subspecies has been extended about 90 km eastward. The pholidolial and morphometric characters and color-pattern features of the specimens were compared with specimens from a known Turkish locality with regard to the literature. We observed that the specimens of the Yörükköy population were similar to P. T. Tauricus specimens reported in the literature.

A Comparative Study Of The Reproductive Activities Of European Hare (Lepus Europaeus) Populations In Turkey, Yasi̇n Demi̇rbaş, İrfan Albayrak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

To explore whether the reproductive cycle of Lepus europaeus differs within Turkey, a total of 182 hares from Turkish Thrace (transition climate), Central Anatolia (continental climate), the Black Sea (oceanic climate), and the Turkish Mediterranean (Mediterranean climate) were collected between June 2006 and September 2014. We present the length of breeding season, sex ratio, mean litter size, and testicle position of European hares distributed in Turkey for the first time. Among these features, length of breeding season and mean litter size of European hares showed moderate variation in Turkey.

Length-Weight Relationships Of Forty-Nine Fish Species From Shallow Waters Of Gökçeada Island, Northern Aegean Seaturkey, Aytaç Altin, Hakan Ayyildiz, Semi̇h Kale, Cenk Alver

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Length-weight relationships (LWRs) of 49 fish species belonging to 18 families from the shallow waters (0-20 m) of Gökçeada Island were reported. Fish specimens were sampled monthly with a beach seine (0-2 m) and beam trawl (5-20 m) between June 2013 and June 2014. The b values estimates varied between 2.66 and 3.59. Five of the 49 species (Arnoglossus kessleri, Scorpaena maderensis, Symphodus ocellatus, Symphodus rostratus, and Gobius geniporus) presented maximum length values that exceeded their maximum lengths listed in FishBase.

First Record Of Facultative Paedomorphism In The Kosswig's Newt Lissotriton (Vulgaris) Kosswigi (Freytag, 1955) (Urodela; Salamandridae), Endemic To Northwestern Turkey, Emi̇n Bozkurt, Kurtuluş Olgun, Ben Wielstra

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Facultative paedomorphism is regularly observed in salamanders, including newts of the Lissotriton vulgaris group. We document the first record of paedomorphism in L. (v.) kosswigi from a locality near Karasu, in the vicinity of Sakarya, Turkey. We compare measurements of 5 paedomorphic individuals with those of 10 metamorphic individuals from the same population and with measurements taken from the literature. Paedomorphs are on average bigger than metamorphs; intriguingly, the opposite pattern has been observed in the Turkish L. (v.) schmidtlerorum.

New Locality Records Of Eumeces Schneideri (Daudin, 1802) (Sauria: Scincidae) From Western Anatolia, Turkey, Keri̇m Çi̇çek, Oğuzkan Cumhuri̇yet, Yusuf Bayrakci, Di̇nçer Ayaz

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, we report 2 new close localities for Eumeces schneideri from Aydın, western Anatolia, Turkey. The specimens were examined morphologically and compared with the relevant literature. These new localities have filled in the gap in the species' distribution range in western Anatolia, Turkey. According to the morphological results, the female specimens resembled E. S. Barani in terms of the scales along the dorsal midline. However, the color-pattern characteristics of the specimens were found to be somewhere between E. S. Barani and E. S. Princeps; thus, the specimens were accepted as E. S. Cf. Barani.

The census of shallow-water sponges from the northern Aegean and Marmara sea coasts resulted in the collection of 10 species of Demospongiae. A new Hymedesmia species, Hymedesmia (Hymedesmia) anatoliensis sp. Nov., is described from the western coast of Turkey. Three further species of demosponges, Axinyssa aurantiaca (Schmidt, 1864), Halichondria (Halichondria) contorta (Sarà, 1961), and Dictyonella incisa (Schmidt, 1880), are new to the sponge fauna of Turkey.

Abacoproeces topcui sp. Nov. (Araneae: Linyphiidae) is described based on male specimens from Mersin Province in Turkey. Four species, namely Araeoncus tauricus Gnelitsa, 2005; Erigonoplus globipes (L. Koch, 1872); Megalepthyphantes pseudocollinus Saaristo, 1997; and Styloctetor romanus (O. P.-Cambridge, 1872), belonging to this family are new records for the spider fauna of Turkey. Styloctetor Simon, 1884 has been recorded as a new genus for Turkey. Data on collected localities, distribution throughout the world, and genitalia figures of each species are presented.

Reedbeds can be characterized as forming a transition between the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They have distinctive animals adapted to living in aqueous conditions. Because of the lack of data on the mite fauna in marsh habitats of Turkey, this faunistic study was conducted in the Ekşisu Marshes, which resulted in collecting and determining 58 species and 36 genera belonging to 29 families. Of these, Stigmaeus sphagneti (Hull), Neothrombium neglectum (Bruyant), Podothrombium macrocarpum Berlese, Johnstoniana eximia (Berlese), Calyptostomata velutinus (Müller), Heminothrus humicola (Forsslund), Astegistes pilosus (Koch), Achipteria coleoptrata (Linnaeus), and Lauritzenia elegans (Kunst) are new records for the Turkish fauna. …

A new plant-feeding mite species, Tetranychus solanacearum Çobanoğlu and Ueckermann sp. Nov. (Acari: Tetranychidae), is described and illustrated. The samples were collected from various solanaceous plants (Solanaceae) [black nightshade (Solanum nigrum L.), bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara L.), eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), spiny nightshade (Solanum rostratum Dunal), jimsonweed or datura (Datura stramonium L.), and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.)] in Ankara Province, Turkey. A key to all species of the genus Tetranychus Dufour known to occur in Turkey is presented in the paper.

In this study, 3801 Ephemeroptera specimens were collected and identified from the Gediz River basin (Kütahya, Manisa, Uşak, and İzmir provinces) during 2011-2012. Twenty-three taxa belonging to 14 genera from 5 families were determined. All identified species from Uşak, Manisa, and İzmir and the 4 identified species from Kütahya are new records for the mentioned provinces. Moreover, Labiobaetis atrebatinus Eaton, 1870 is a new record for the Turkish Ephemeroptera fauna. As a result of this study, the number of the identified Ephemeroptera species from Turkey has increased to 147.

Interstitial and phytal harpacticoid fauna of the mediolittoral zone of the Dilek Peninsula within the border of Aydın Province in Turkey was investigated. Harpacticoid copepods were collected from 7 different localities between 2012 and 2013. As a result, a total of 78 species and subspecies belonging to 48 genera in 18 families were determined. This study is based upon material of the family Cydnidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1980 and 2012. A total of 13 species of 7 genera belonging to 2 subfamilies, Cydninae and Sehrinae, of the family Cydnidae were recorded from Turkey. Among them, Cydnus aterrimus (Forster, 1771), Macroscytus brunneus (Fabricius, 1803), Canthophorus dubius (Scopoli, 1763), and Tritomegas sexmaculatus (Rambur, 1839) have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. Separately, Legnotus picipes (Fallén, 1807) is a new record for the Turkish fauna. In addition, new localities are added for some species previously reported for Turkey.

For the first time, morphological polymorphism among the anterior and posterior sets of primary teeth of the periphallic organ was observed among natural populations of Drosophila. Natural and laboratory populations of 3 different species (D. Ananassae, D. Bipectinata, and D. Malerkotliana) belonging to the ananassae subgroup were used to study the intra- and interspecific variations in the number of teeth of the anterior and posterior sets of the periphallic organ. The systematic position of the endemic Madagascan genus Amberiana Dist. İs studied using DNA sequences (the mitochondrial 12S rDNA subunit) for the first time. The phylogenetic relationships within the superfamily Pentatomoidea were computed using neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony, minimum evolution, and maximum likelihood methods, as well as Bayesian estimation. All results based on the mtDNA analyses stand in contrast with previous morphological data. The mtDNA analysis showed close relationships of the genus Amberiana to the genus Sehirus (Cydnidae: Sehirinae) and to species of the family Parastrachiidae, whereas the morphology indicated that the genus was a typical representative of the family Dinidoridae. …

In this study, helminth parasites of the thicklip grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) in Beymelek Lagoon, Antalya (Turkey) were studied to determine the effect of seasonal changes and host size, age, and sex on the incidence of parasitic helminth infection. Three helminth species were identified: Ligophorus angustus Euzet and Suriano 1977 (Monogenea) on the gills, and Saccocoelium obesum Looss, (Digenea) and Neoechinorhynchus agilis (Rudolphi, 1819) (Acanthocephala) in the intestine. The rocky mouse, Apodemus mystacinus, is a rodent species distributed in Anatolia. A total of 108 specimens from 19 localities in Turkey were collected to study the molecular variation of A. Mystacinus inferred from RFLP of mtDNA cytochrome b (cytb) and D-loop. MboI, HaeIII, and RsaI from cytb digestion and MboI, BfaI, and HinfI from D-loop digestion showed differentiation among the studied specimens. The zooplankton composition of Lake Ladik, located in Samsun Province in northern Turkey, was investigated monthly between November 2009 and October 2010. Some physicochemical parameters such as temperature of surface water, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, conductivity, and total dissolved solids were also evaluated. A total of 29 zooplankton species were identified. These species were represented by three main groups: Rotifera (59%), Cladocera (24%), and Copepoda (17%). Termination of the life cycle of sexually reproducing aphids usually takes place in autumn, during October and November, in the climatic conditions of Central Europe. However, episodes of warm weather are suspected to trigger prolongation of the life cycle. Observations of Stomaphis spp. İn early winter of 2013/2014 in southern Poland support this thesis. This study investigated the age-length relationship, length-weight relationship, somatic condition, gonadosomatic index, and reproduction properties of Cyprinion macrostomus and Cyprinion kais. C. Kais is an endemic species included on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in the Tigris-Euphrates Basin. A total of 153 C. Macrostomus and 114 C. Kais were collected. We measured body size (snout-vent length, SVL) for three populations of Ommatotriton ophryticus newts in Turkey and estimated age using the skeletochronological method. Age was determined by counting the lines of arrested growth in cross-sections taken from phalanges. SVL was similar among populations and ranged between 58.41 and 85.78 mm in males and 50.33 and 71.56 mm in females. Males were significantly larger than females in all populations. Length-weight relationships, distribution of length and weight groups, sex ratio, and length compositions of the crayfish Astacus leptodactylus (Esch., 1823) population in Lake İznik (Bursa), along with some reproductive-period characteristics (spawning periods, pleopod egg numbers, and egg incubation periods), were investigated between February 2010 and May 2011. For this purpose, 1897 freshwater crayfish samples (896 female, 1001 male) were collected, using fyke nets of 34-mm nominal bar length. Seven aphid species are recorded from the countries of the Middle East and the Caucasus for the first time, of which three aphid species are new records for Turkey, two species for Lebanon, and one species each for Iran and Georgia. New host plant genera are reported for Aphis cephalariae Barjadze, Anoecia vagans (Koch), and Macrosiphum symphyti Barjadze and Chakvetadze. Information on biology and geographical distribution for each species is also provided.

The breeding biology, behavior, and diet of Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus were studied during 2 breeding seasons in forests in southwestern Iran (n = 3 nests) from April to June in 2012 and 2013. All nests faced west to east on the upper edges of cliffs. Eggs were laid during 7-11 March. The clutch size was 3 eggs and incubation period was 31 ± 1 days. A study was conducted on mercury renal concentration in 154 individuals of 28 species of birds with various habitat and trophic preferences. The highest geometric mean concentrations of Hg were found in large piscivorous birds such as Cormorant and Grey Heron. The maximum mercury levels were noted for individuals of White-tailed Eagle and Great Crested Grebe. Significant differences in renal mercury concentration between Sparrowhawk individuals were found in winter and in spring. Male Sparrowhawks generally accumulated rather more mercury in their kidneys than the females.
