Zooplankton Composition And Abundance In Lake Eğrigöl, A High Mountain Lake (Gündoğmuş, Antalya), Cem Aygen, Di̇dem Özdemi̇r Mi̇s, M. Ruşen Ustaoğlu, Süleyman Balik

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Field studies were conducted in July and August 2000, and in June and September 2001 in order to determine the zooplankton composition and abundance of Lake Eğrigöl, a high mountain lake located 2060 m a.s.l. in the middle Taurus Mountain Range. In total, 41 species were found, including 30 Rotifera, 8 Cladocera, and 3 Copepoda. Based on the number of species and their abundance (individuals m^{-3}), rotifers were the dominant group (49.75%-90.92%), followed by Cladocera (6.54%-27.52%), and Copepoda (2.54%-22.72%). All taxa were first records for the lake.

Records Of Aquatic Beetles (Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, Dytiscidae) And Physico-Chemical Parameters In A Natural Lake (Artvin, Turkey), Ümi̇t İncekara

Some ecological requirements of aquatic Coleoptera species were studied in a natural lake. Water beetle samples, collected in 2007 from the National Park Sahara-Karagöl belonging to the families Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, and Dytiscidae were identified and listed. Both physical (conductivity and temperature) and chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, hardness, organic matter, chloride, phosphate, and some metal ions) parameters of the inhabited water were measured.

Multivariate Morphometric Study On Apis Florea Distributed In Iran, Ayça Özkan, Mohammed M. Gharleko, Berna Özden, İrfan Kandemi̇r

Multivariate Morphometric and Spatial Autocorrelation Analyses were performed to determine the morphometric variation in Apis florea colonies representing 13 localities from 4 states on the coastal north-south diagonal in Iran. New morphometric characters (hind wing length, hind wing width, and hind wing angles) were also measured to determine the usefulness of these characters for Apis florea. Analysis of variance of new morphometric characters showed that 7 out of the 8 hind wing variables displayed statistically significant differences among populations (P < 0.05). The scatter plot from Canonical Variate Analysis revealed that the colonies from north (Ilam, Khuzestan, and Bushehr states) showed an overlapping distribution. The colonies from south (Hormuzgan state) formed a non-overlapping distant cluster. Based on the spatial autocorrelation analysis, 14 correlograms were significant for morphometric characters (According to the Bonferroni criterion). Six characters (CuB, C.Ind, HWW, B4, D7, and I13) showed clinal type correlogram.

The parasitoids of the small poplar longhorn beetle, Saperda populnea (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were studied in the Aras Valley (Kars and Erzurum provinces), Turkey, during 2006-2007. Five parasitoid species, Paraperithous gnathaulax (Thomson), Dolichomitus populneus (Ratzeburg), Dolichomitus tuberculatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Ipbiaulax impostor (Scopoli) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and Billaea irrorata (Meig.) (Diptera: Tachinidae), were reared from the over-wintering larvae living in the galls of S. populnea. Dolichomitus populneus was the most numerous of the parasitoids and accounted for 55% of all parasitoids reared. Corythucha arcuata (Heteroptera: Tingidae) is an important pest species that causes severe damage to oak species by sucking up the cellular sap material and leaving its eggs on the underside of leaves. Considered a Nearctic species with a wide distribution, especially in the United States and southern Canada, it has recently been reported beyond the North American continent, specifically in Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey. Since its first report from Bolu, in 2003, the oak lace bug has rapidly dispersed throughout Turkey-to Düzce, Zonguldak, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Eskişehir, Ankara, Çankırı, and Bilecik provinces. Species composition, nocturnal activity and population dynamics of mosquitoes in the Aras Valley of Turkey are studied. Seven New Jersey light traps were activated two nights per month at different sampling sites showing various habitats such as riverside, orchard, roadside, village, wooded area, agricultural area and pasture in 30 km^^{2} area. The night was divided into 6 equal nocturnal periods (18^{00}-20^{00} h, 20^{00}-22^{00} h, 22^{00}-24^{00} h, 24^{00}-02^{00} h, 02^{00}-04^{00} h, 04^{00}-06^{00} h), and the specimens were collected in consecutive 2 hours. The ichthyofaunal changes in Lake Eğirdir between 1915 and 2007 were reviewed. It was understood that the most drastic change in the ichthyofauna of Lake Eğirdir occurred in 1955 with the introduction of pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), and that the process of change continued with the addition of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in 1996 and big scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) in 2003. Today, there are 15 fish taxa (10 native, 5 non-native) in Lake Eğirdir. (Hym.: Eulophidae), was reared from galls of Dasineura oleae (Loew) (Dipt.: Cecidomyiidae) on leaves and shoots of Olea europea L. as a larval parasitoid of the host in Hatay, a province of Turkey. This paper aims to elucidate the structure and design of radulae of 2 species of limpet, namely Patella caerulea and P. rustica. Samples were examined by light microscope and SEM. Although the general formula is the same, the pattern of each dentition differed between the 2 species. General morphology and histology of odontophore showed structural significance of the organ, suggesting a further study to confirm ecological choice of the genus at different intertidal levels.

Four Euphorinae and Opiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitoid species, Biosteres (Chilotrichia) arenarius Stelfox, 1959, Opius (Misophthora) bulgaricus Fischer, 1959, O. (Phaedrotoma) umlalaziensis (Fischer, 1996), and Perilitus (Microctonus) cerealium Haliday, 1835 were recorded for the first time in Turkey. All species were collected from the Adıyaman province in 2004 and 2005. The general distribution and known hosts of each species are presented in this paper.

The Caspian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata) flourished in Central Asian riverine forest systems in a range disjunct from that of other tigers, but was driven to extinction in 1970 prior to a modern molecular evaluation. For over a century naturalists puzzled over the taxonomic validity, placement, and biogeographic origin of this enigmatic animal. Using ancient-DNA (aDNA) methodology, we generated composite mtDNA haplotypes from twenty wild Caspian tigers from throughout their historic range sampled from museum collections. A number of records of rotifers from Turkey are discussed. An account is given on trophi morphology in 4 species of Asplanchna Gosse, 1850. Cephalodella segersi De Smet, 1998 is recorded for the second time after its description, and Lecane shieli Segers and Sanoamuang, 1994 is recorded from Turkey for the first time. Both these and a population of Hexarthra polyodonta polyodonta (Hauer, 1957) from the species’ type locality, Lake Van, are illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopic techniques.

Contribution To The Knowledge On The Distribution Of Malacostraca (Crustacea) Species Of Central And Southern Anatolia, With Some Ecological Notes, Murat Özbek, Süleyman Balik, Esat T. Topkara

In order to contribute to the knowledge on the distribution of Malacostraca (Crustacea) species inhabiting freshwaters of central and southern parts of Anatolia, Turkey, sampling was performed at 69 stations between 29 May and 4 June 2006 and between 19 and 25 June 2006. Malacostraca specimens were found at 26 out of the 69 stations and were represented by 11 taxa (Gammarus agrarius, Gammarus argaeus, Gammarus anatoliensis, Gammarus balcanicus, Gammarus mladeni, Gammarus pseudosyriacus, Echinogammarus antalyae, Asellus aquaticus, Palaemonetes antennarius, Atyaepyra desmaresti orientalis, and Astacus leptodactylus). The zoogeographical distribution and ecology of the determined taxa are presented herein.

This study was based on 8 species of 5 genera of Phytoseiidae of the order Mesostigmata (Acari) found in 67 samples. These specimens were collected from Hakkari province in 2005 and 2006. Among the species, Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) tamaricis Kolodochka, 1982 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. The descriptions and drawings of female T. (A.) tamaricis are given in this paper. The distribution of each species, worldwide and in Turkey, is also presented.

This research was carried out to determine the macrobenthic crustacean species associated with mixed eelgrass beds (Zostera marina and Z. noltii) occurring in the upper-infralittoral zone of the Sinop peninsula coast (the southern Black Sea, Turkey) and their bioecolological features. From June 2004 to April 2005, investigations were seasonally performed at the depths of 2-4 m at 6 different stations chosen on the Sinop peninsula coast. The relationship between the lordosis severity and swimming performance in sea bass juveniles was investigated. In total, 149 experimental animals 110-130 days old that ranged from 1.44 to 3.44 g (mean_{TW} ± SD: 2.41 ± 0.49 g) and 5.4 to 6.5 cm (mean_{TL} ± SD: 6.03 ± 0.39 cm) were used in experiments to determine critical swimming speed (U_{crit}) in water that was 14 ± 1 °C. The Heteroptera fauna in east Azerbaijan and west Azerbaijan provinces in northwestern Iran was surveyed during 2005-2006. In all, 73 species from 18 families were collected and identified, of which 1 species, Mozena lunata (Burmeister, 1835) (Coreidae), is a new record for the Palearctic ecozone and 6 species are newly recorded from Iran.

Twenty-nine species belonging to 17 genera of the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae are reported from the Central Anatolian and the Mediterranean regions of Turkey. Detailed distributions of these species in these 2 regions are given. Seventeen species are newly recorded from central Anatolia and 10 from the Mediterranean region. Datonychus urticae (Boheman, 1845) is a new record for Turkey.

From 2003 to 2006, the freshwater ciliates of northeastern Azerbaijan were studied. The present paper describes a new ciliate - Gymnocyclidium nabranicum n. gen., n. sp. (Gymnocyclidiidae n. fam.) that clearly differs from other representatives of Scuticociliatida by reduction of bipolar somatic kineties to 2 or 3 short longitudinal crowns. Gymnocyclidiidae n. fam. includes 3 genera - Gymnocyclidium n. gen. (type genus), Paurotricha Dragesco and Dragesco-Kerneis, 1991 and Paracyclidium Grolière, de Puytorac, Grain, 1980.

Ants of the genus Procryptocerus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are characterized by the protrusion of the clypeus forming a broad nasus and antennal scrobes over the eyes. We report on a young male, cinnamon-phase American black bear (Ursus americanus) that was collected in northwestern Nebraska on May 12, 2008. This specimen represents the first black bear taken in Nebraska since 1907. Cranial characteristics and mass of the individual indicated a 15–16-month old bear. This bear may have dispersed from the Laramie Mountains in southeastern Wyoming along the North Platte River into western Nebraska. This record adds to the growing number of cases where large carnivores are reinvading previously occupied territory in the Great Plains. Walleye Sander vitreus (Mitchill) distributions and ecology have been poorly studied in southern river basins. We studied the longitudinal distribution and population characteristics of walleye in an unregulated river within the Ozark region of the U.S., the lower Eleven Point River, Arkansas, which has high species diversity. Walleye were collected in a 60 km segment of the river by daytime boat electrofishing over a three year period (2002-2004). Catch rates, growth rates and size structure were high relative to other streams studied in North America. Catch per effort ( = 5.2/h) was similar seasonally, spatially and among years. This is the first record of a green frog Rana (Pelophylax) kl. esculenta population from the E-system in the north-western part of Romania. From April to July 2005 we analysed the trophic spectrum of 84 Rana kl. esculenta females, extracting and identifying a total number of 801 prey items. Beside animal preys, plant materials and remains of shed skin were identified in the stomach contents. We did not find any Rana kl. esculenta individuals with empty stomachs. Forty-seven rotifer species were recorded from 11 freshwater bodies in Turkey. In all, 11 of these species, Cephalodella eva (Gosse, 1887), C. gibboides Wulfert, 1950, C. intuta Myers, 1924, C. maior (Zavadovsky, 1926), C. tenuiseta (Burn, 1890), Collotheca tenuilobata (Anderson, 1889), Monommata dentata Wulfert, 1940, Mytilina bisulcata (Lucks, 1912), Notommata tripus Ehrenberg, 1838, Paradicranophorus sordidus Donner, 1968, and Proales fallaciosa Wulfert, 1937 are new records for the Turkish fauna. Some of the recorded species were illustrated using light microscopy.

Length-Weight Relationships Of Fishes From Gökova Bay, Turkey (Aegean Sea), Tevfi̇k Ceyhan, Okan Akyol, Mustafa Erdem

Length-weight relationships (LWRs) are presented for 17 fish species caught from Gökova Bay (southeastern Aegean Sea) during the 2006 fishing season. Fish samples were collected from small-scale trammel nets and longline fisheries. The values of b ranged from 2.086 (±0.152) for Sphyraena sphyraena to 3.499 (±0.058) for Scomber japonicus. The median value of b was 3.055 (±0.081). The r^2 values ranged from 0.712 for Sphyraena chrysotaenia to 0.996 for Scomber japonicus and all relationships were highly significant (P < 0.001). Estimated LWR parameters of 4 species, Dicentrarchus labrax, Seriola dumerili, Siganus luridus and Sphyraena sphyraena, for Turkish waters are presented for the first time.
