Currently there are no published accounts of the specific diets of mink (Mustela vison) in Nebraska. Herein, we present findings of an historic data set on the winter diets of mink in Nebraska. Gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of mink were collected by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission during the 1946-1947 fur trapping season. The contents of the GI tracts were identified as specifically as possible and percentage of occurrence and percentage of total volume was calculated for each prey item. We characterized 24 polymorphic tetranucleotide microsatellite loci for delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) endemic to the San Francisco Bay Estuary, California, USA. Screening of samples (n = 30) yielded two to 26 alleles per locus with observed levels of heterozygosity ranging from 0.17 to 1.0. Only one locus deviated from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting these individuals originate from a single panmictic population. Linkage disequilibrium was found in two pairs of loci after excluding the locus out of Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Populations of anadromous alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and blueback herring Alosa aestivalis, collectively referred to as river herring, have declined in the Connecticut River. A hypothesis for why river herring have declined is that predation pressures have increased associated with recent increases in abundance of striped bass Morone saxatilis. Information on striped bass abundance, size structure, and consumption rates are required to test this hypothesis. Maine and Massachusetts paid bounties on seals during the 19th and 20th centuries. To determine the number of seals killed for bounty, we examined historical records of bounty claims, and used geographic information systems and multiple linear regression to find predictors of places where large numbers of bounties were paid. We found records of 24,831 bounties paid in Maine (1891-1945) and 15,690 in Massachusetts (1888-1962), Considering possible fraud, missing data, and seals struck and lost, this suggests that 72,284 to 135,498 seals were killed in the bounty hunt, probably enough to account for regional declines in seal populations. Thirty-Seven Additional Microsatellite Loci In The Pacific Lion-Paw Scallop (Nodipecten Subnodosus) And Cross-Amplification In Other Pectinids, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Ana M. Ibarra, Bernie May

We characterized 37 new microsatellite markers in the Pacific lion-paw scallop (Nodipecten subnodosus) and tested for cross-amplification in four other species. Genetic diversity was estimated using 24 individuals from the Lagoon Ojo de Liebre, B.C.S., Mexico. Allelic richness varied from 5 to 27 alleles per locus and the average expected heterozygosity was 0.76. Ten loci exhibited significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium likely due to the presence of null alleles. Sixteen of these markers cross-amplified in closely related N. nodosus, while little or no amplification was observed in three Argopecten species.

Southern Arkansas reservoir largemouth bass populations (Micropterus salmoides) are often supplemented with stocks of Florida bass (M. floridanus) in an attempt to boost the frequency of hybrid and trophy bass. Stocking rates of Florida bass among these lakes are highly variable. We determined bass phenotype composition among 12 lake populations based upon stocking protocols: exclusively Florida bass, primarily Florida bass, mixed stocking protocol and primarily largemouth bass. We also compared condition among phenotypes (n =2,100) to test for hybrid or phenotype vigor. Mean relative weight of bass for most lakes but SWEPCO Lake (mean Wr = 72) were ≥ 90. …

Southwest Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) Lake in northwest Arkansas is a thermal cooling pond for the Flint Creek Power Station. This reservoir has been regularly stocked with Florida bass (Micropterus floridanus) on top of a pre-existent largemouth bass (M. salmoides) population since its creation in 1976. Allozyme analysis of diagnostic loci in 1995-1996 revealed that 62% of the alleles were Florida bass alleles and that most fish were FX hybrids (77%). Microsatellite analysis of diagnostic loci in 2006 revealed that 78% of the alleles were Florida bass alleles and that most fish were FX-Florida hybrid bass (59%), with the remainder …

A qualitative freshwater mussel survey was performed in the South Fork Spring River, Arkansas between May 13 and June 20, 2006 to assess community composition, density, and the presence of endangered mussel species (Family Unionidae). Twenty-one species from 460 individuals of mussels were collected using qualitative methods. Of those 21 species, 11 were ranked as S1, S2, or S3 using rankings established by the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission Heritage Program. Three species, Amblema plicata (Say 1817), Lampsilis reeveiana (Call 1887), and Ptychobranchus occidentalis (Conrad 1836), comprised 48% of all mussels collected with 12%, 15%, and 21%, respectively. The Buffalo River in north-central Arkansas is approximately 246 km long and flows through the Boston Mountains and Springfield and Salem Plateaus to the White River near Buffalo City. The Buffalo River is America’s first National River with the National Park Service owning 11% of land in the watershed. The objectives of this project were to survey the entire perennially wet length of river, search for mussels of conservation concern, and document the freshwater mussel assemblages. During 2004 and 2005, 235 km of the river were qualitatively and quantitatively surveyed. We documented 64 mussel assemblages. Time constrained qualitatively sampled assemblages …

We determined the health status of similar channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) ponds in Lincoln and Desha counties of Arkansas, using the nematode soil food web condition as our reference point. Soil nematodes were categorized into colonizer-persister (cp) groups, based on their life course characteristics e.g sensitivity to environmental changes, body size, etc. These cp groups represent different components of the soil food web, which in turn were indicators of soil conditions. Recent collections and additional records of Collembola from caves in Arkansas are reported. Based on these collections and review of the literature, 35 collembolan species are known from Arkansas caves. Included in this group are 10 troglobiotic, or cave-limited, species: Lethemurus missus, Pygmarrhopalites buffaloensis, Pygmarrhopalites clarus, Pygmarrhopalites dubius, Pygmarrhopalites youngsteadtii, Pseudosinella dubia, Pseudosinella testa, Sinella barri, Sinella cavernarum, and Typhlogastrura fousheensis. Three of these species, Py. buffaloensis, Py. youngsteadtii, T. fousheensis, are endemic to Arkansas, while Ps. dubia is known only from the Ozark Plateaus Ecoregion. An investigation was carried out on the native gastropod species in Lake Gölbaşı, Hatay. During the research 3 species belonging to the subclass Pulmonata (Gyraulus piscinarum, Radix labiata, Anisus leucostoma) were detected along with 9 species of the subclass Orthogastropoda (=Prosobranchia) including Theodoxus jordani, Semisalsa contempta, Semisalsa longiscata, Bithynia phialensis, Valvata saulcyi, Valvata piscinalis, Melanoides tuberculatus, Melanopsis praemorsa ferussaci, Melanopsis costata costata. These gastropod species were collected from 4 stations chosen in the lake. Furthermore, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature were measured at the sampling sites.

The natural history of thirty-eight species of the genus Crematogaster in North America has been discussed and distribution of specimens mapped. A dichotomous key to the workers of these species has been developed. I hypothesized that the species richness is not as great as previously thought in North America. External Morphology Of Eggs Of Macronemurus Bilineatus And Megistopus Flavicornis (Neuroptera, Myrmeleontidae): A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Savaş Canbulat, Selami̇ Candan

The eggs of Megistopus flavicornis (Rossi, 1790) and Macronemurus bilineatus Brauer, 1868 were studied by light and scanning electron microscope and are described in detail in this paper. Both species have roughly elongate and cylindrical eggs with rounded ends and have 2 flattened disc-like micropylar processes at the opposite poles. The chorionic surface is tuberculated and differs between the 2 species. The eggs of M. flavicornis additionally have some rows containing polygonal pattern of exochorion near the micropyles. Moreover, a number of morphological differences between the 2 species are noted.

The karyotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of southern catfish, Glyptothorax silviae Coad, 1981, was investigated for the first time by examining metaphase chromosome spreads obtained from gill epithelial and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 52. The karyotype consisted of 9 pairs of metacentric, 14 pairs of submetacentric, and 3 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. The arm number was 98. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were cytologically detected in this catfish. Comparison of the chromosome number of this fish with that of the other members of subfamily Glyptosterninae shows that 2n = 52 may be regarded as …

(Hym.: Pteromalidae), Diadegma crassicornis (Gray.) subsp. africator Aubert (Hym.: Ichneumonidae), Euplectrus sp. Four oppioid (Oribatida:Oppioidea) mite species, namely Berniniella (Berniniella) parasigma Iturrondobeitia, 1987, Autogneta (Rhaphigneta) numidiana (Grandjean, 1960), Conchogneta dalecarlica (Forsslund, 1947), and Lauroppia tenuipectinata Subías and Rodríguez, 1987, recorded from Artvin province are given with their original figures. Some of their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented. All of them are new records for the Turkish fauna.

The histological changes of gonads were studied in Aphanius persicus from the Barm-e-Shoor spring (south of Iran). The gonads were extracted and prepared histologically. The maturity stage of each specimen was examined according to size and weight of gonad, degree of occupation in the body cavity, the type and number of germinal cells (in testis) and follicles (in ovary). The early developmental stages of the Pisidae crab, Doclea muricata (Herbst, 1788), and the Epialtidae crab, Acanthonyx limbatus (A. Milne Edwards, 1862), from Pakistan are described for the first time. Zoeae I and II of Doclea muricata and Acanthonyx limbatus were obtained from field-collected ovigerous females that were kept under laboratory conditions. These larval stages are described, illustrated, and compared with those of earlier studies of known species of the genera. Studies of Opisthobranchia diversity in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea are scarce. In the present study Opisthobranchia species collected along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Turkey in 2004 and 2005 were evaluated. Samples were taken from Çanakkale Strait and the northern coast of Gelibolu Peninsula in the northern Aegean Sea, and from Bodrum, Bay of Fethiye, Kaş, and Adrasan along Turkey´s Mediterranean coast.
