A New Host, Sphenoptera Tappesi Marseul (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), For Dolichomitus Kriechbaumeri (Schulz) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) From Turkey, Hali̇l Bolu
Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study was conducted during April-June 2004 in Diyarbakır province. The ichneumonid parasitoid, Dolichomitus kriechbaumeri (Schulz) (syn. subglabratus), was reared from the larvae of Sphenoptera tappesi Marseul, which infests the trunks and twigs of peach and plum trees in orchards. S. tappesi is a new host for D. kriechbaumeri.

Lead (Pb) And Copper (Cu) Concentration In The Eggshells Of Audouin´S Gull (Larus Audouinii) In Turkey, Zafer Ayaş, Hüseyi̇n Çeli̇kkan, Mehmet Levent Aksu
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Audouin´s gull (Larus audouinii) eggshells from 2 archipelagos (Karaburun-İzmir and Aydıncık-Mersin) in Turkey were collected between 2002 and 2003, and analyzed for lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) content. According to the results, mean Cu level of the eggshells was 1.855 ppm for the Aydıncık colony and 10.202 ppm for the Karaburun colony. Mean Pb level of the eggshells was 0.954 ppm for the Aydıncık colony and 4.601 ppm for the Karaburun colony. The detected metal levels did not seem to have any toxic effects on the Audouin´s gull populations. It is suggested that eggshells from abandoned nests of Audouin´s gulls …

Hibernation Pattern And Importance Of Superoxide Dismutase For The Turkish Hamster, Mesocricetus Brandti (Mammalia: Rodentia), Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Di̇dem Erten, Nursel Gül
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Specimens of Mesocricetus brandti were observed in order to assess the onset of hibernation and the inhibition rate of superoxide dismutase (SOD). The first individual began to hibernate on November 2 and the last animal awoke on May 5. Individual hibernation bouts varied from 8 to 63 days, and the longest uninterrupted hibernation was 4 days. In the hibernation period, the animals lost an average of 27.1 g, ranging from 2.7% to 38% of total body weight. In hibernating animals, the average inhibition rate of SOD was 82.3% while it was 77.5% in active animals. The inhibition rate of SOD …

Investigating Current Efficacies Of Several Nematocides For Use In Cattle According To The Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test, Tifanie Silver, Chris Tucker, Jeremy Powell, Jana Reynolds, Zelpha Johnson, Bill Lindsey, Pete Hornsby, T. A. Yazwinski
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Utilizing small groups of naturally infected replacement heifers, fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were conducted in the later months of 2007 at the University of Arkansas Savoy Research Station. Each test was 28 d in length, consisting of individual fecal nematode egg counts (EPG) and coprocultures. For the first test, the calves were ranked by beginning EPG, blocked, and randomly assigned treatment within each block. Nine to ten animals were in each treatment group. In this test, neither IVOMEC (® Merial) or IVERMECTIN (® Durvet), both delivered as an injectable at the rate of 0.2 mg of ivermectin kg-1 …
Oviposition Behavior Partitions Aquatic Landscapes Along Predation And Nutrient Gradients, C. A. Binckley, W. J. Resetarits Jr.
Oviposition Behavior Partitions Aquatic Landscapes Along Predation And Nutrient Gradients, C. A. Binckley, W. J. Resetarits Jr.
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
That individuals attempt to minimize the ratio of mortality risk/growth rate (μ/g) when foraging within individual habitat patches is well established. Do species partition among spatially discrete communities embedded in complex landscapes in a similar manner? We investigated how 3 ovipositing species (2 Hyla treefrogs and a hydrophilid beetle, Tropisternus lateralis) responded to simultaneous gradients of nutrients and predation risk. Species partitioned our experimental metacommunity primarily by reducing oviposition with fish. Tropisternus positively responded to increased nutrients, but the effect decreased with increasing risk, as predicted by μ/g theory. Use of fish habitats by Tropisternus was unrelated to breeding …
Population Ecology Of The Golden Mouse, Robert K. Rose
Population Ecology Of The Golden Mouse, Robert K. Rose
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
An understanding of the population dynamics of a species requires knowledge of the major life-history parameters of a population, including age at maturity, distribution of age classes, and lifetime reproductive contribution of the sexes, sex ratio, length of the breeding season, mean litter size, rates of growth and survival, and life span. Because few long-term studies have been conducted with Ochrotomys nuttalli as the focal species of investigation, only fragmentary information is available for many population parameters. As importantly, densities of golden mice often are low, making them difficult to evaluate statistically. Little has been published on age at maturity …

Insects Inhabiting The Burrows Of The Ozark Pocket Gopher In Arkansas, Peter W. Kovarik, Stephen W. Chordas Iii, H. Robison, P. Skelley, M. Connior, J. Fiene, G. Heidt
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Pocket gopher burrows provide a stable environment for a variety of inquilines; hence this mammal is regarded as a keystone species. Most of the arthropods inhabiting pocket gopher burrows are restricted to this microhabitat. As part of a planned state-wide biotic survey of insects inhabiting this unusual microhabitat, we have focused our initial sampling efforts on the Ozark pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius ozarkensis; Geomyidae). In 2004 and 2005, pitfall traps were established in pocket gopher burrows and in 2007 and 2008, nests and associated chambers were excavated. Retrieved samples contained scarab, histerid, and rove beetles, cave crickets and anthomyiid flies. …
