Growth And Reproduction Properties Of Capoeta Trutta (Heckel,1843) In Karakaya Dam Lake, Ercan Kalkan

In this study, 510 samples of Capoeta trutta living in Karakaya Dam Lake were studied. After determining sex distribution, size (length and weight), growth rates, and growth conditions factors of 210 C. trutta specimens were examined. The number of female and male specimens was 104 and 106, respectively. The age of females and males ranged between 1-7 and 0-7 years, respectively. The age-length, age-weight, and length-weight curves were constructed. According to the von Bertalanffy equation, females and males were: L_t = 89.5[1-e^{-0.0571(t+2.4138))}], W_t = 9627.1[1-e^{0.0571(t+2.4238))}]^{3.0325} L_t = 76.4[1-e^{-0.0604(t+2.6514))}], W_t = 5207.2[1-e^{0.0604(t+2.6514))}]^{2.9322}, respectively . The Natural History Of The Egyptian Fruit Bat, Rousettus Aegyptiacus, In Turkey (Mammalia: Chiroptera), İrfan Albayrak, Nursel Aşan, Tarkan Yorulmaz

Aspects of the ecology, karyology, and taxonomic status of the Egyptian fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated based on 41 specimens obtained between 1977 and 2003. Distribution, external and cranial morphometrics, pelage coloration, baculum morphology, karyology, colony size, roosting and feeding ecology, and conservation and management issues were recorded. The fruit bat in Turkey is represented by the nominate subspecies, R. a. aegyptiacus. Sexual dimorphism was recorded in pelage coloration and morphometric data. The authors investigated the occurrence of fungi and fungus-like organisms (chromistan organisms) growing on dead Moina macrocopa specimens in 3 bodies of water of varied trophicity. Dead specimens of the crustacean Moina macrocopa, fish feed in aquaculture in countries of the Mediterranean basin, were used as bait. In all, 55 species were identified on the Moina macrocopa specimens, including 42 chromistan organisms and 13 fungus species. Of the 42 chromistan organisms, 13 are known as parasites or necrotrophs of fish species. Additional Notes On The Odonata Fauna Of Kurupelit (Samsun, Turkey), Ali̇ Mi̇roğlu, Veysel Kartal

In this study 387 Odonata specimens were collected and identified from the vicinity of streams and puddles in Kurupelit, Samsun, Turkey, between May and October 2002-2005. In all, 27 species from 17 genera belonging to 9 families were identified, 9 of which (Coenagrion scitulum, Ischnura elegans ebneri, Aeshna affinis, Aeshna isosceles antehumeralis, Anax parthenope, Hemianax ephippiger, Libellula depressa, Libellula fulva, and Orthetrum brunneum) are new records for the Odonata fauna of Samsun. This study includes faunistic and distributional records of the 27 species.

A total of 1527 of poor cod (Trisopterus minutus Linn., 1758) were collected by trawl hauls between April 2001 and March 2002 from İzmir Bay (central Aegean Sea). The size of the fish (total length) ranged from 10.6 cm (minimum, September) and 24.8 cm (April). The population was composed of 53% males, 41% females, and 6% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:1.3. The age composition of the samples was from I to V. The Greater Noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus, was recorded from southwestern Turkey for the third time. The dorsal fur of the Greater Noctule, which also covers the underpart of the wing membrane, along with the forearm and propatagium, is uniformly dark brown. The cranium shows typical characteristics of the noctule bats. In addition to these, the exoccipital is convex and is markedly visible in the planar view of the skull. The present study provides data on the abundance of syntopic southern crested newts, Triturus karelinii, and banded newts, Triturus vittatus, in Uludağ National Park. The population of T. karelinii was 275 ± 60.9 (95% CI = 138-413) in Kirazlıyayla and 424 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 212-636) in Sarıalan. The populations of T. vittatus in Kirazlıyayla and Sarıalan were 392 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 196-588) and 158 ± 37.9 (95% CI = 79-237), respectively. Diet Composition Of The Pharaoh Eagle Owl, Bubo Ascalaphus, In Azraq Nature Reserve, Jordan, Adwan Hussien Shehab, Michal Ciach

Pellets of the Pharaoh Eagle Owl Bubo ascalaphus were collected from Azraq Nature Reserve in the Eastern Desert of Jordan. Analysis of the content of the owl pellets yielded the remains of 107 individuals of prey representing 15 different species. Based on the numbers of individual prey items, 13.1% was represented by 3 insectivores (Hemiechinus aff. auritus, Crocidura suaveolens, and Suncus etruscus) and 73.8% by 4 rodents (Mus aff. musculus, Meriones libycus, Gerbillus nanus, and Jaculus jaculus). Rotifera species collected from a pool (Çeltikli village, Bismil, Diyarbakır) 22 km from Bismil to Batman were surveyed taxonomically. Eighteen rotifer species were identified. Two of these species, Sinantherina semibullata (Thorpe, 1889) and Cephalodella megalocephala (Glasscott), 1893, as well as the genus Sinantherina Bory de St. Vincent, 1826, are new records for the Turkish rotifer fauna.

In this study nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) of Acomys cilicicus were examined. The karyotype of A. cilicicus is composed of 2n = 36, FN = 70, and FNa = 66. Ag-NORs are located on the terminal region of the long arm of chromosome 5 and, as a secondary constriction, on the long arm of chromosome 6 in this species. All the NORs are homomorphic and large-sized.

This study was carried out in 2005. The larvae, virgin, and adult females of Parthenolecanium persicae, and larvae of Eupeodes corollae were collected from almond tree plantations in the province of Diyarbakir, Turkey, during May and June, and brought to the laboratory for rearing. P. persicae was determined as a new host of E. corollae.

Some specimens of Torymidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) were collected in Turkey, one of which belongs to Idarnotorymus Masi, 1916 (Torymidae: Toryminae) as a new species, I. burdurensis, and is described from Burdur province. The diagnostic characters of the genus and the new species are reviewed, and photographs and line drawings of I. burdurensis are presented.

Dorcatherium majus is one of the 4 Asian species of Dorcatherium found in the Siwaliks of Pakistan. Many fossiliferous sites in the Lower and Middle Siwaliks of Pakistan (Middle and Late Miocene) were visited in the last 14 years and many specimens of D. majus were found. Some specimens are well preserved and some are in a poor state of preservation. Among the collected specimens, 8 were included in this study due to their good preservation. All the selected specimens belong to the lower dentition of D. majus and document intraspecific size variation.

Currently, amphibian decline is accepted as a global problem. One of the most important proposed causes for the decline is the use of agrochemicals, especially pesticides. Nevertheless, information about the impact of pesticides on amphibian populations remains scarce. The present study sought to identify the effects of malathion, an organophosphorus insecticide, on 21^{st} stage larvae of the marsh frog, Rana ridibunda, with an acute toxicity test using a static system. For this study, ostracod samples collected from a total of 9 stations in 2 maar lakes (Acı and Meke) and 1 sinkhole lake (Meyil) in Konya, Turkey were investigated. Accordingly, 14 ostracod taxa (Darwinula stevensoni, Candona angulata, Candona sp. 1, Candona sp. 2, Pseudocandona marchica, Cypria sp., Ilyocypris gibba, I. bradyi, I. monstrifica, Heterocypris salina, Potamocypris sp., Limnocythere sp., Paralimnocythere sp., and Cythereis sp.) belonging to 10 genera were identified. In this study, 4 experimental groups and 1 control group containing adult mice (Mus musculus var. albinos) were used to examine the effects of 2 different cadmium compounds, namely cadmium para hydroxybenzoate, which was newly synthesized, and cadmium chloride on the liver of mice. In various test concentrations, both cadmium compounds were intraperitoneally injected into adult mice every day for 15 days. With standard histological techniques samples were obtained from the livers of the mice. Slides were prepared and examined with light microscopy (Nikon Eclipse E600) and histopathological structures were observed.

The Ichneumonidae species associated with Umbelliferae plants in Palandöken Mountains in Erzurum were investigated between July 1996 and August 1997. Among the 5 plant species, Seselis libanotis and Carum carvi were more attractive for ichneumonid species than the rest of the species. The first one was visited by 13 ichneumonid species with 109 individuals and the second one was visited by 9 species with 220 individuals. All these plant species could be accepted good nectar reservoir for ichneumonids.

Karyotype And Hair Scale Structure Of Nannospalax Leucodon (Nordmann, 1840) From Central Anatolia (Rodentia: Spalacidae), Nursel Aşan, Tuğba Yağci

The karyotype and hair scale structure of the subterranean mole rat, Nannospalax leucodon (Nordmann, 1840), in Kırıkkale province were determined. The diploid number, fundamental number, and the number of autosomal arms were 54, 74, and 70, respectively. The structure of the hair scale type was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and was found to be serrate coronal, simple coronal, and erose coronal at the base, shaft, and tip, respectively. The chromosomal form and hair scale structure of the mole rat were recorded for the first time from Kırıkkale province.

Morphometric measurements and color-pattern features of 62 samples of Mauremys rivulata from the Lake District (Göller Bölgesi) and the Mediterranean Region of Turkey were compared. Between populations, males apparently differed in 10 characters and females in 12 characters (independent t-test), but coefficient of difference (CD) values for these characters were not significant, and sexes were combined into a single group and compared with Aegean M. rivulata with respect to morphometric features. This study was based on 57 beech marten (Martes foina) specimens collected in Turkey between 1994 and 1998. The specimens were divided into 3 age classes as young, juvenile, and adult on the basis of the morphology of the sagittal and lambdoidal crests, and temporal ridges, relative lengths of the interorbital and postorbital constrictions, the degree of wear in molar and canine teeth, baculum weight and structure, pelage color, cranial and bacular measurements, and field notes concerning sexual maturity and lactation. NeemAzal-T/S^{®} 1% was fed to 3 experimental groups by stomach intubation (5, 15, 25 mg/kg) for 6 days and the control group given tap water. Three water shrew specimens were collected in the Sheshpir spring (2303 m a.s.l.), Fars province, south-western Iran. In pennial morphology, which is species-specific in the genus Neomys Kaup, 1829, the specimens were indistinguishable from N. anomalus Cabrera, 1907. The Sheshpir spring is located approximately 900 km to the south-south-west of Gorgan, the only site in Iran where N. anomalus has been known to occur so far. The spring is a stony basin with bare banks and poorly developed aquatic vegetation and as such is an atypical habitat for water shrews. It is noteworthy that fish are absent in the spring.

A new checklist of Asilidae from Iran, consisting of 156 species and subspecies belonging to 9 subfamilies, is presented. One tribe, 8 genera, and 31 species are new records for the Iranian fauna. Notes on synonymy, distribution, habitat, and prey of the species are included.

This study was performed to determine Ptenoglossa species (Mollusca, Gastropoda) distributed along the Turkish coastline of the Aegean Sea. The examination of samples, taken between 1995 and 2005 from various biotopes and depths up to 300 m, yielded 249 specimens and 130 shells, belonging to 33 ptenoglossate species, of which Monophorus thiriotae Bouchet 1984, Similiphora similior (Bouchet and Guillemot 1978), Cerithiopsis diadema Monterosato 1874, Cerithiopsis jeffreysi Watson 1885, Krachia tiara (Monterosato 1874), Punctiscala cerigothana (Sturani 1896), Melanella boscii (Payraudeau 1826), and Nanobalcis nana (Monterosato 1878) were unrecorded from the Turkish coasts.
