Efficacy Of The Rodenticide Bromethalin In The Control Of Microtus Arvalis And Nesokia Indica In Alfalfa Fields, Alireza Khalilaria, Mohsen Morovati, Mehdi Naseri
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Rodents cause huge losses to agricultural crops annually. During outbreaks, this pest can cause irreversibly high damage. Solely non-chemical control measures have not been successful in reducing the population of this pest; therefore, the use of chemical rodenticides, especially on crops like alfalfa, is unavoidable. Bromethalin is a neurotoxic, acute, single-dose rodenticide with high efficacy, and since it is mostly used in wax formulation it is not attractive to non-target organisms, and hence is not very dangerous. Bromethalin 0.01% was tested in alfalfa fields of west Azerbaijan, Tehran, and Kerman provinces in completely randomised treatment blocks with 4 treatments (bromethalin …

Distribution Pattern And Morphological Differences Between The Sexes Of River Blenny, Salaria Fluviatilis (Asso, 1801), In The Ceyhan River Basin, Turkey, Ahmet Alp, Cemi̇l Kara
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The distribution of the river blenny (Salaria fluviatilis) in the Ceyhan River basin and the morphological differences between the sexes were investigated. Occurrence of the river blenny in the Ceyhan River basin depended on altitude of the habitats, and specimens were obtained at altitudes < 750 m. Samples were strongly female biased, which may have been due to the egg-guarding behavior of the males. There was also sexual dimorphism in that male blennies were larger than females (P < 0.05); however, there were no differences in the meristic counts between the sexes (P > 0.05). Analysis of variance showed that all of the standardized morphometric measurements were significantly different among the samples. In discriminant function analysis, morphological differentiation was determined between the sexes. Plotting discriminant function 1 to 2 separated the sexes from each other. Proportions of correctly classified individuals into their original groups were 71.9% for juveniles, 79.0% for …

Adding To The Reproductive Biology Of The Parthenogenetic Oribatid Mite, Archegozetes Longisetosus (Acari, Oribatida, Trhypochthoniidae), Michael Heethoff, Michael Laumann, Paavo Bergmann
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The oribatid mite, Archegozetes longisetosus, serves as a chelicerate model organism due to its relatively short life cycle and ease of laboratory culturing. It is a parthenogenetic species and all cultures recently used in different laboratories are descendants of a single female collected in 1993. While aspects of its developmental and functional biology have been published, knowledge of its reproductive rate and reproductive system is meager, and data on its life history are contradictory. Herein, we present the gross morphology of the reproductive system as obtained by SEM techniques and X-ray synchrotron microtomography, a new tool for studying mite anatomy. …

Biometrical Study Of Artemia Urmiana (Anostraca: Artemiidae) Cysts Harvested From Lake Urmia (West Azerbaijan, Iran), Alireza Asem, Nasrullah Rastegar-Pouyani, Naser Agh
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Artemia urmiana was reported from Lake Urmia by Günther in 1899. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the diameter of untreated and decapsulated cysts and chorion thickness at 26 stations in Lake Urmia. One-way ANOVA (Tukey test, P < 0.05) was used for analyzing the data. Only 31 pair means of untreated cysts among 26 stations showed significant differences, but, on the other hand, 157 pair means of decapsulated cysts among stations showed significant differences. There was a high variation in cyst diameter among the different localities in Lake Urmia. It was shown that this lake consists of recognizable sections producing cysts with different hatching characteristics, which can be used for diverse aquacultural purposes.

Larval Development Of Himri, Barbus Luteus (Cyprinidae: Cypriniformes) Reared In The Laboratory, Ramez Al Hazzaa, Abdulrazak Hussein
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Larval development of the himri barbel, Barbus luteus Heckel, reared at 19-22 °C in natural daylight is described. Morphological and some functional character appearances were similar to the main ontogenetic steps of development in most cyprinids. Small hatched larvae attained both metamorphosis and a length of 10.5 mm after almost 35 days. Relative growth of the selected body proportions demonstrated typical priorities in growth compared to the length. An ontogenetic index was inferred from applying age and length criteria at metamorphosis as a scale for ontogenetic events.

Gonad Development And Sex Ratio Of Sharptooth Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus Burchell, 1822) Cultured Under Laboratory Conditions, Şehri̇ban Çek, Erdal Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In the present work, gonad development and sex ratio of sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) cultured under laboratory conditions over 365 days from hatching were investigated histologically and morphologically. The maturation stage for both males and females was detected 295 days after hatching. Five and 6 developmental stages were indicated for testis and ovaries, respectively. The developmental pattern of ovaries was categorised as the group-synchronous type. The sex ratio of the 200 sampled fish was 90:110 (male:female) and this difference was not significant (P > 0.05). Additionally, final live mean weight of the males was higher than that of the females (P < 0.05). The beginning of vitellogenesis was in April and ovarian development peaked in July. These results suggest that 1-year-old male and female C. gariepinus can be used as brood stock for seed production under standard laboratory conditions.

This study is based on the karyological analyses of 4 Sus scrofa specimens obtained from Kırıkkale province in 2003 and 2005. It is the first time that karyotypes of Turkish wild boar specimens were determined. The diploid chromosome number (2n) is 38 and number of autosomal arms (NFa) 60. Karyological data were compared to the relevant literature. The results showed that the Turkish wild boar is different from central and western continental European specimens having 36 chromosomes and is identical to the domestic pig, and ones from east and south-east Europe and the Mediterranean islands.
