Systematical Studies On Megabombus (Apidae: Hymenoptera) Species In Central Anatolia, Ahmet Murat Ayteki̇n, Neşe Çağatay

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Some species from the genus Megabombus in Central Anatolia were considered. Eight species were determined from the subgenera Thoracobombus, Rhodobombus and Megabombus (s. str.) by both classical and morphometrical systematics. Synonymies, Turkish and general distributions and detailed drawings of the dorsal view of the male genitalia were given. As a result of the phenograms obtained from 39 different morphological characters examined statistically, the subgenus Megabombus was shown to be a natural group.

Complex life cycles (CLCs) contain larval and adult phases that are morphologically and ecologically distinct. Simple life cycles (SLCs) have evolved from CLCs repeatedly in a wide variety of lineages but the processes that may underlie the transition have rarely been identified or investigated experimentally. We examined the influence of larval growth rate on the facultative expression of alternative life cycles (metamorphosis or maturation as gill-bearing adults [= paedomorphosis]) in the salamander Ambystoma talpoideum. We manipulated growth rates by altering the amount of food individuals received throughout larval development. The expression of alternative life cycles in A. talpoideum is influenced …

Channel catfish virus (CCV) causes a severe hemorrhagic disease in channel catfish fry and fingerlings. CCV epizootics are associated with elevated water temperatures and high mortality rates. Survivors of acute disease are latently infected with i virus. In this study, we investigated conditions effecting CCV pathogenesis and latency utilizing an experimental immersion model to simulate natural infection and a population of Arkansas catfish verified to have no prior CCV exposure, the results indicate that the Auburn- 1 laboratory strain is comparable to CCV field isolates in virulence and ability to establish latent infection. The western pond turtle Emys (formerly Clemmys marmorata) is declining throughout its range, primarily due to loss of habitat via urbanization and conversion to agriculture. Urban waterways present several important challenges to freshwater turtle populations, but they also present an opportunity to maintain declining species in a ubiquitous habitat that has high public visibility. The arboretum waterway on the University of California, Davis campus is an example of an extensively altered urban habitat that supports a relatively large E. marmorata population. Ellobius lutescens is the only species of the genus Ellobius living in eastern Anatolia. They are highly adapted to underground life. There is no knowledge about the ecological peculiarities, population structures or detailed range of this species in Turkey. Data were recorded during field studies and laboratory observations of 42 specimens collected from 12 different localities. The melanocortin 1-receptor (MC1-R) gene plays a key role in the expression of fur and feather color in mammals and birds by regulating the distribution of two melanin pigments: eumelanin (black/brown) and pheomelanin (red/yellow). MC1-R corresponds to the classical Extension (E) locus in mice, pigs, dogs, horses, and chickens. Three E locus alleles, the wild-type (e+), brown (E), and redhead (erh) have been identified in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The Willow Flycatcher, Empidonax traillii (Audubon), was a newly discovered species when John James Audubon found it at Arkansas Post in 1822. The bird was fairly common in summer in prairie-scrub habitat around Arkansas at least until the 1950s. There after numbers declined until one or two individuals were found occasionally at a single site in Benton County in the late 1980s through 1990s. We found a population consisting of three nesting territories on Baker Prairie Natural Area in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. Geographic isolation and habitat specialization has aided in the evolution and maintenance of genetic integrity of the lepomid sunfishes (Lepomis: Centrarchidae) of North America. Our goal was to measure genetic distances between four of the eleven extant sunfish species by using mitochondrial DNA analysis. Mitochondrial DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were examined in bluegill (L. macrochirus), redear sunfish (L. microlophus), longear sunfish (L. megalotis), and green sunfish (L. cyanellus) using 15 restriction endonucleases. The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) was used as an outgroup. The phylogeny inferred from Dollo parsimony cladistic analysis largely concurred with published results from allozyme analyses …

The Arkansas Post National Memorial (ARPO) is a unique historical landmark with an interesting herpetofaunal community. We conducted an amphibian and reptile inventory of this national park from 2000-2002. We found eight amphibian and 21 reptilian species inhabiting the park. These included eight species not previously identified at ARPO. Overall species richness was highest at Alligator Slough, although the northern portion of ARPO was relatively rich. Aquatic trophic guilds included 7 (36.8%) piscivores, 7 (36.8%) omnivores, 4 (21.1%) insectivores, and one (5.3%) carnivore. The terrestrial trophic guilds included 13 (76.5%) insectivores, 2 (11.8%) carnivores, and 1 (5.9%) each of omnivores …

The puddle frog genus Phrynobatrachus Günther, 1862 comprises about 64 currently recognized species (Frost, 1985). Of these, only the tadpoles of P. natalensis (Smith, 1849) (Power, 1927; Channing, 2001), P. guineensis Guibé & Lamotte, 1961(Rödel,1998) and P. alticola Guibé & Lamotte, 1961 (Rödel & Ernst, 2002) have been described. Phrynobatrachus mababiensis FitzSimons, 1932 (Dwarf Puddle frog, Wager, 1986; Mababe River frog, Frank & Ramus, 1996) is a small frog that usually calls from low in thick vegetation on flooded terrains close to the water. The material was collected between September 1995 and August 1998 from 79 stations on Sakarya River. A total of nine Naididae species (Ophidonais serpentina (Müller, 1773), Stylaria lacustris Lamarck, 1816, Nais pardalis Piguet, 1906, Nais variabilis Piguet, 1906, Pristinella jenkinae (Stephenson, 1931), Pristina foreli (Piguet, 1906), P. longiseta longiseta Ehrenberg, 1824, P. proboscidea Beddard, 1896 and P. aequiseta Bourne, 1891) belonging to five genera were recorded for the first time from Sakarya River.

The morphological and karyological characteristics of 27 specimens of Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from the European part of Turkey were studied in detail and compared with those in the literature in order to provide a wider perspective on the taxonomic status of Apodemus agrarius in Turkey. In all the samples examined, 2n = 48 karyotype was observed with FN = 56 and FNa = 54. Only one species of bat, Molossus molossus, previously has been documented as occurring on the northern Lesser Antillean island of Nevis. Field research and reviews of existing museum collections have provided documentation based on voucher specimens for an additional seven species occurring on the island — Noctilio leporinus, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Monophyllus plethodon, Ardops nichollsi, Artibeus jamaicensis, Natalus stramineus, and Tadarida brasiliensis. The biological diversity of the chiropteran fauna on Nevis is similar to that found on other islands in the northern Lesser Antilles. Adult Leptodactylus mystacinus are of moderate size, the head is as wide as long, and the hind limbs are moderately short (see Table; Heyer and Thompson 2000 provided definitions of adult size and leg length categories for Leptodactylus). Male vocal sacs are not visible externally or at best are weakly expanded laterally and slightly darker than female throats. Male snouts are more spatulate than those of females. Male forearms are not hypertrophied. Males lack asperities on the thumbs and chest. The worldwide decline of natural fish stocks, the accumulation of chemical pollutants in aquatic environments and increasing world consumption of fish products has provided an impetus in many countries for a rapid growth in aquaculture. Fish produced from aquaculture currently account for over one-fourth of fish consumed by humans. However, success in aquaculture mainly depends on breeding, feeding and protection from disease. Application of recombinant DNA technology in aquaculture can help to improve these requirements.

In this study, developmental stages of D. modesta (Leonardi, 1899) females collected from Erzincan province and its surroundings by Bal in 1997-2001 were evaluated. The specimens were examined in the light of previous studies. Earlier definitions, the structural features of females and nymphs, and the localities of the species were reviewed. Thirty-five microcrustacean taxa, comprising 21 species of cladocerans, eight species and one subspecies of copepods, and five species of ostracods were identified from Lake Sazlıgöl during a 17-month research period in 1998-1999. Of these species, Eucypris ornata (Müller, 1776) (Ostracoda) was recorded as new species for the freshwater fauna of Turkey.

A Study On The Ornithofauna Of Sakaryabaşı/Eminekin Pond And Its Vicinity, Azi̇z Aslan, İlhami̇ Ki̇zi̇roğlu

The study was carried out to determine the ornithofauna of Eminekin Pond and its vicinity in Sakaryabaşı, within the district of Çifteler in Eskişehir province. The study area is situated on one of the migration routes of birds. During the study period, from July 1995 to July 1996, a total of 102 bird species from 37 families were observed in the area and 37 of these species were resident, ten of them were winter visitors, forty six were summer visitors and only nine were found to be passage migrants.

Turkey is one of the richest countries in terms of the Chilopoda fauna. However, knowledge of the Chilopoda fauna of some parts of Anatolia is still limited, particularly of Central Anatolia. This study is based on Chilopoda samples collected from two different localities in the city of Eskişehir. Four species belonging to four genera were determined.

The objective of this study was to determine parasitoids attacking the apple ermine moth (Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller) in Sivas. Ten parasitoid species belonging to hymenopteran families of Ichneumonidae, Eulophidae, Encrytidae and Elasmidae and a dipteran family Tachinidae were found. Parasitoid guilds, their effect on the population of Yponomeuta malinellus and their importance in biological control are discussed.

A check list of Hydrophilidae species known in Turkey is presented for the first time. In addition, their distributions in Turkey are given. Fifty-four species are determined. Of these, Hydrophilus atterimus Eschscholtz, 1822, a new record for the Turkish fauna, is reviewed and compared with H. piceus (Linnaeus, 1758).

A Study On Micromys Minitus (Pallas, 1771) (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Turkish Thrace, Beytullah Özkan, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak

Micromys minutus was recorded from six localities in Turkish Thrace. The external, cranial and karyological peculiarities of the specimens were determined. The dorsal colour of the specimens is dark brownish, being lighter on the sides, but the rostrum and cheek are markedly ochre. Mean tail length relative to body length is 90.5%, and the occipito-nasal length is 18.1 mm. The diploid number of chromosomes was 2n = 68 with NF = 136 and NFa = 132.
