Lessepsian Fishes Spreading Along The Coasts Of The Mediterranean And The Southern Aegean Sea Of Turkey, Hati̇ce Torcu, Savaş Mater

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The taxonomy and biological characters of 22 Lessepsian fishes living on the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea were examined and 8 species were determined to have commercial importance. Of these, Upeneus moluccensis and Saurida undosquamis have become economic fishes of the Eastern Mediterranean trawl fisheries, having significant stocks. The species previously misidentified as Upeneus asymmetricus was determined to be Upeneus pori. It has been pointed out that new species can be added to the recorded ones by the consequent influx of Red Sea biota into the Levant.

In order to determine the reproduction characteristics of Liza ramada, a fish of economical importance, the GSI, egg diameter, sex maturity, age and sex ratio were examined in 228 specimens caught periodically, between February 1992 and July 1994 in Akgöl-Paradeniz Lagoon. According to the GSI % and egg diameter, the reproduction period of Liza ramada was determinedto be November and December. The lowest GSI % obtained for Liza ramada was 4.99 % in February and the highest values were16.67 % in November and 11.67 % in December. The Distribution And Fishing Of Two Mediterranean Eledone Spp. (Octopoda: Cephalopoda) In The Aegean Sea, Alp Salman, Tuncer Katagan, Ali̇ Cemal Gücü

The spatial distributions of Eledone cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) and Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1798) were examined based on four seasonal trawl surverys carried out between 1991-1992 covering 20-500 meters of the Turkish and international waters in the Aegean Sea. It was found that E. cirrhosa inhabits all depth ranges examined in the northern part, but it was seldom observed in the south. E. moschata, on the other hand, has a basin-wide distribution and solely inhabits the upper 200-meter depth range.

A Preliminary Study On The Reproduction Of The Rabbitfish (Siganus Rivulatus (Forsskal, 1775)) In The Northeastern Mediterranean, Hacer Yeldan, Dursun Avşar

This study was carried out to identify some aspects of the reproductive cycle of the rabbitfish ( Siganus rivulatus) inhabiting the northeastern Mediterranean. For this reason, monthly sampling was conducted between February 1995 and June 1996, and a total of 473 specimens were used. By using the monthly changes in the values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and Condition Factor (K), it was found that their reproduction takes place during July and August. The mean diameter of ripe gonadal eggs was 0.44 mm; and mean fecundity and its standard deviation was found to be 434761±181006. Fecundity-total length, fecundity-total weight and …

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences of two species ( Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas) of sea turtles from the Mediterranean were analysed using samples from Northern Cyprus. Only one single haplotype for each species was detected. These results were compared with other published work regarding the genetic structure of sea turtle populations. These results suggest that the Mediterranean population of sea turtles were separated from their Atlantic relatives in the recent past. In this study the development of the digestive tract of newly hatched rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae were examined. The digestive tract was attached to the anus a few hours after hatching. On the second day their mouths were open and the differentiation in the esophagus started. Mucosal folds contained a large quantity of cubic epithelium and goblet cells. Goblet cells were stained positively with Alcian blue and also stained negatively with P.A.S. Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, which was carried out in July 1998, erythrocyte sizes of Lacerta rudis were examined. The L. rudis specimens were collected from Zigana Pass (Trabzon) at an altitude of 1820 m. Blood smears were prepared at Zigana Pass. Mature erythrocytes (entire cell) and their nuclei lengths and widths were measured by means of an ocular micrometer at a total magnification of 1600x.

The present study was carried out to examine the relationship between helminth infections, nutrient reserves and gonadal status in powan in relation to infection with Diphyllobothrium spp. The relationship between fish size and body composition was also investigated. The condition factor increased with increasing length for uninfected fish and decreased for infected fish. This demonstrates the negative effect of infection on the growth of the fish. Toxicity Of Crude Neem Leaf Extract Against Housefly Musca Domestica L. Adults As Compared With Ddvp, Dichlorvos, Mohammad Farahullah Khan, Syed Muzaffar Ahmed

Toxicity of neem extract in comparison with DDVP (Dichlorvos) was determined against the housefly ( Musca domestica L). Neem leaf extract was applied at 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 microgram/fly and DDVP was treated in 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 microgram/fly doses. Lethal dose values were calculated with probit analysis and LD 50 and LD 90 values were found to be 8.4 and 169.8 ug/fly of neem extract respectively, whereas, values of 0.44 and 3.58 ug/fly of DDVP were found for LD 50 and LD 90 against house flies.

In this study, globulin and albumin proteins of Apodemus mystacinus and Apodemus agrarius were examined using the SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) technique. In A. mystacinus, there were 7-8 bands in the globulin region and 2-3 bands in the prealbumin zone. It was determined that there were variations in both the globulin region and prealbumin zone in populations of A. mystacinus. In specimens of A. agrarius, nine bands appeared in the globulin region, and two bands were observed in the prealbumin zone. A total of 47 different localities including lakes, ponds, streams, rivers and other bodies of water were surveyed between 1996 and 1998 in order to determine the Cladocerean (Crustacea) fauna of the Turkish Thrace region. Thirty-nine species of Cladocera were collected, out of which, 10 are new of the Thrace region of Turkey. The distribution of the species are given according to their localities and province.

In this study, we describe 13 Lacerta sicula hieroglyphica collected from the centre of Bursa and ‚Çakırca, a village about 10 km west of Iznik. The specimens, including their habitat characteristics and distribution, are described. This subspecies is known to live on islands in the Marmara Sea and in Istanbul. This is the first report of L. s. hieroglyphica from Bursa and ‚Çakırca village and therefore its distributional range is being extended to the south of the Marmara Sea.

In this study, Herpetofauna of the eastern region of t he Amanos mountains in Turkey was investigated. A total of 319 samples were collected and 27 species from 17 amphibian and reptile families were described. Two of these species are urodeles, three are anurans, two are turtles, eleven are lizards and eight are snakes.

The frogs used in this study were divided into three groups. The first group consisted of frogs collected from their natural habitat, and these animals were dissected immediately. The bodies of the frogs in the second group were totally submerged in water at +4 °C, and the third group of frogs was kept in a dry environment. Community Structure Of Zooplanktonic Organisms In Lake Akşehir, Nuray Emi̇r Akbulut

In this study, the abundance and seasonal distribution of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were examined. A negative correlation beetween rotifers and crustaceans in terms of their abundancy rates was observed. Copepods were most abundant and comprised 43.3 %; rotifers comprised 34 % and cladocerans comprised 22.6% of the total zooplanktonic organisms. Copepods were abundant in autumn whereas rotifers were abundant in spring and autumn but cladocerans were abundant in summer periods. Some zooplanktonic organisms recorded in all samples throughout the study period were Filinia, Hexarthra, Brachionus, Asplanchna, Keratella, Arctodiaptomus spinosus and Diaphanosoma lacustris.

In this study, growth in the carp population was investigated using samples caught with longline nets of different mesh sizes. Mortality rate and stock analysis were calculated by length frequency data taken from commercial fisheries. The age composition of the samples was from I to VI. The fork lengths were between 10.5 and 49.4 cm, the total weights were found to be between 20.19 and 1922.20 g. and condition factors ranged from 1.298 to 2.388. This paper provides brief data on the distribution, morphology, biology and way of life of the fishes inhabiting rivers located in Chatkal Biosphere Reserve. The rivers of this reserve are inhabited by cold-loving fishes adapted to mountain conditions. These fishes are characterized by low fecundity, bigger size of eggs and a slower growth. Most of these fishes are small inhabitants of stony-pebble parts of the rivers and are capable of pressing themselves to the bottom and hiding themselves behind stones.

Laboratory Evaluation Of Bromethalin Against Lesser Bandicoot Rat, Bandicota Bengalensis, Abdul Azi̇z Khan, Syed Waqar Ali̇ Ri̇zvi̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Results of no-choice and choice feeding tests against Bandicota bengalensis showed that bromethalin is highly toxic and efficacious rodenticide. However, its susceptibility differed between sexes. In no-choice test minimum time of cent-percent mortality was 1.2 days (range 1-2). The amount of toxicant consumed per rat resulting in complete mortality was 4.92±0.78 and 5.09±0.22 mg/kg in female and male rats respectively. In choice tests, mean days to death was 2.1 (range 1-4 days) and the amount of toxicant consumed per rat averaged 5.56±0.30 mg/kg. The latency period exceeded 210 minutes of the poisoning.

This study was carried out to determine the optimal water temperature and to investigate the effects of additional substrate on growth and survival during the nursery culturing of Penaeus semisulcatus in two separate experiments. At the end of six weeks, survivals of postlarvae (PLs) at 22, 24, 26, 30 and 34¡C were 52, 46, 70, 30 and 40%, respectively. The highest (2.76 mm/week) and lowest growth rates in terms of total length (0.43-0.49 mm/week) were displayed by the PLs grown at 34¡C and 22-24¡C, respectively. A Systematic Study On The Otolith Characters Of Sparidae (Pisces) In The Bay Of İzmir (Aegean Sea), H. Tuncay Kinacigi̇l, Okan Akyol, Gülnur Meti̇n, Hülya Saygi

The otolith morphologies of 13 species belonging to the Sparidae family collected from the Bay of İzmir (Aegean Sea) were examined separately and the characteristics were drawn. The values obtained from measurements are given in the 95% confidence interval. With discriminant analysis, the groups were formed depending on the data collected. As a result of this analysis, it is possible to identify the species from the Sparidae family by the otolith characters.

A total of 359 samples were collected from different geographical regions in Turkey and the species boundaries of white toothed shrews (genus Crocidura) in Turkey were defined using morphological and karyological characteristics. According to these characteristics, it was determined that Crocidura leucodon with karyotype of 2n = 28 and FN = 56 and Crocidura suaveolens with karyotype of 2n = 40 and FN =50 are distributed in Turkey. A Preliminary Study On The Ostracoda (Crustacea) Fauna Of Lake Beyşehir, Selçuk Altinsaçli, Mustafa Kiliç, Songül Altinsaçli

The material was collected in July and September 1997 from 15 stations on Lake Beyßehir. A total of 15 species ( Ilyocypris biplicata, Ilyocypris gibba, Ilyocypris bradyi, Candona neglecta, Pseudocandona compressa, Prionocypris zenkeri, Eucypris virens, Heterocypris rotundata, Heterocypris incongruens, Cypria ophtalmica, Physocypria kraepelini, Cypridopsis vidua, Potamocypris zschokkei, Psychrodromus olivaceus, Darwinula stevensoni) belonging to 12 genera were determined. Of these, Heterocyprisrotundatais new addition to the Ostracoda fauna of Turkey.
