Ultrastructure Of The Cortex Of The Rumen Ciliate Ophryoscolex Purkynjei Stein, 1858 (Entodiniomorphida: Ophryoscolecidae), Gürsel Ergen, Bayram Göçmen, Beri̇a Falakali Mutaf

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The ultrastructure of the cortex of Ophryoscolex purkynjei,an entodiniomorphid ciliate obtained from domesticated cattle rumens, was studied and found to have five layers. A particulate and/or filamentous glycocalyx layer, triple membrane layer, homogeneous epiplasmic layer with very fine grains, microtubular layer characterized with a double row of microtubule bundles each containing at most 6 units, and a compact microfilamentous layer were identified. In addition, scarce and disorganized kinetosomes and related microtubules were found to lie underneath all of these. These observations are discussed with reference to the findings of previous studies of other entodiniomorphid ciliates.

Ultrastructural Features Of The Intrinsic Lingual Muscles In The Frog, Rana Ridibunda, Mukaddes Eşrefoğlu, Özgen Vuraler

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The ultrastructural features of the intrinsic lingual muscles in the frog were investigated. The pieces obtained from the anterior part of the tongue were fixed in 3% gluteraldehyde and postfixed in 0.1% osmium tetroxide. Ultrathin sections stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate were examined in a JEOL-100SX electron microscope. The muscle fibers were irregular in shape. The sarcoplasm was occupied largely by the myofibrils. In the same muscle fiber, longitudinal, transverse and oblique sections of the myofibrils were observed. Thus, regular transverse striation was prominent in some areas. In these areas, Z lines, I bands and A bands were …

The Influence Of The Dictyocaulus Filaria On The Phospholipid And Fatty Acid Composition In The Blood Of Sheep, G. M. Bastarbekova, A. E. Kuchbaev, D. A. Azimov Jan 2000

The Influence Of The Dictyocaulus Filaria On The Phospholipid And Fatty Acid Composition In The Blood Of Sheep, G. M. Bastarbekova, A. E. Kuchbaev, D. A. Azimov

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper provides results of an analysis of phospholipids (PL) and their fatty acid (FA) content in the blood of sheep infected by the nematode Dictyocaulus filaria. Significantly high level of arachidonic acid in the lysophospholipids, and low levels of docozangexenic acid in the phospholipids were obtained, which indicate structural and functional disorders of cellular membranes in blood during dictyocaulosis. These disorders are regarded as metabolic criteria for an assessment of the relation between parasite and host.

Elimination Of Essential (Cu, Zn) And Non-Essential (Cd, Pb) Metals From Tissues Of A Freshwater Fish Tilapia Zilli, Mustafa Kalay, Mustafa Canli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Tilapia zilli were exposed to the same concentration (1 mg/L) of essential (Cu, Zn) and non-essential (Cd, Pb) metals for 10 days so that these metals would accumulate in the liver, gill, brain and muscle tissues. Subsequently, the animals were transferred to uncontaminated water for a period of elimination, during which samples were taken at days 1, 7, 15 and 30. Cadmium and lead accumulated in all the tissues and the tissue concentrations increased many times compared to the levels of these metals in the control fish (

Seasonal Variations Of Demersal Fish Composition In Gülbahçe Bay (İzmir Bay), Cengi̇z Meti̇n, Zafer Tosunoğlu, Adnan Tokaç, Altan Lök, Celaletti̇n Aydin, Hakan Kaykaç

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In the present study, the seasonal variations in demersal catch composition in Gülbahçe Bay were investigated by trawl sampling. Species identification of the samples was carried out at class, family and species levels. The results of this study were compared to those of previous studies carried out in the same area and it was concluded that red mullet, which is the dominant species of Gülbahçe Bay, has lost this characteristic because of overfishing and marine pollution. For this reason, fishing activities and the discharge of domestic waste waters should be strictly controlled.

Age Determination Methods Of Solea Lascaris (Risso, 1810) Inhabiting The Black Sea, Derya Bostanci, Nazmi̇ Polat

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was conducted to determine the most reliable bony structures for ageing Solea lascaris inhabiting the Black Sea. The relations between four different bony structures are presented in tables and figures by scale, vertebra, otolith and broken burnt-otolith ages of 215 samples collected between October 1996 and October 1997. It is concluded the broken-burnt otolith is the most reliable structure for ageing this species. The Von Bertalanffy growth equation was estimated from the broken-burnt otolith age as L_t=24.85 x [1-e-^{0.113(t+3.87)}].

Apoptosis: Programmed Cell Death, Mahmut Çalişkan Jan 2000

Apoptosis: Programmed Cell Death, Mahmut Çalişkan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Programmed cell death has been found in many multicellular organisms and occurs as a part of normal development as well as in pathological processes associated with some diseases. Programmed cell death, or apoptosis, is the process whereby certain cells are induced to activate their own death or cell suicide. Apoptosis has been described in a wide variety of cell and tissue types from nematodes to mammals. Apoptosis, unlike necrosis, is mediated by the active participation of dying cells. In another words, the dying cells synthesize certain proteins and enzymes to carry out the "suicide" process. The genes involved in apoptosis …

Livability Of Leghorn Balut Embryos Stored Under Varying Temperatures And Storage Times, Joyce Jong, F. Dustan Clark

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Baluts are fertile chicken or duck eggs that have been incubated and removed from the incubator prior to hatching for consumption. Chicken eggs are incubated for 11 to 14 days and duck eggs are incubated for 16 to 20 days. Baluts have an extremely specialized consumer market, with the majority of its consumers of Filipino decent. Current U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations for the storage of baluts prior to sale is 7.2ºC, the same as for infertile commercial table eggs. Consumer preference is to purchase live baluts for consumption. Since exposure to 7.2ºC causes embryo mortality within 8 hours of …
