Some Morphological Characteristics And Neonatal Weights Of Reintroduced Gazelle (Gazella Subgutturosa) In Turkey, Şükrü Gürler, Faruk Bozkaya, Deni̇z Özüt, Mustafa Durmuş

The aim of this study was to determine birth weights, body measurements, and phenotypic correlations in order to characterize the gazelle population raised in Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey. For this purpose, body measurements of 93 adult gazelles (54 ♀, 39 ♂) and 41 young gazelles (17 ♀, 24 ♂) were carried out, and correlations between the measurements were calculated. Additionally, birth weights of 47 newborn gazelle calves (22 ♀, 25 ♂) were determined. Mean body weights of adult and young females and males were 13.86 ± 0.76 kg and 19.39 ± 0.92 kg (P < 0.001) and 8.83 ± 0.14 kg and 10.74 ± 0.17 kg (P < 0.01), respectively. In all groups highly positive correlations between body weight and chest circumference were detected. Birth weights of female and male newborn calves were found to be 1.84 ± 0.02 kg and 1.95 ± 0.04 kg, respectively. Differences in birth weights of female and male newborn calves were not statistically significant. The results indicated that the gazelles reared in Turkey were similar to both G. s. subgutturosa and G. s. marica. In order to develop an efficient conservation program, further genetic studies are required for determining the taxonomical status of the gazelle population studied.

The seasonality of abundance and live/dead compositions of copepods was studied in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. Zooplankton, chlorophyll-a, and PO4 sampling was performed on a monthly basis from March 2006 to February 2007 at both a coastal station and an open water station. At the coastal station, high phytoplankton biomass was driven by PO4 input from the Lamas River. On annual average, copepod abundance was 53,075 and 140,227 ind. m-2 at the coastal and open water stations, respectively. Sticky colored traps have been widely used for sampling of harmful insects in wild and cultivated plants worldwide. Colored sticky traps could be a simple and a low-cost method for determining the relative abundance of harmful and beneficial insects, including pollinators. Forty-seven species belonging to 7 genera of Alticini are presented based on the investigations conducted on Davraz Mountain (Isparta). Host plant relationships of 24 species established from the area are listed. Brassicaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Lamiaceae seem to be the most preferred host plant families among others. Three species from the genus Longitarsus Berthold - namely L. baeticus Leonardi, 1979; L. foudrasi Weise, 1893; and L. tabidus (Fabricius, 1775) - were sampled only from 1900 m and above on the mountain. Altitudinal gradients are an important variable in testing the life history traits (e.g., longevity, age at maturity, and body size) of organisms. In this study, the life history traits of the Anatolian lizard Apathya cappadocica were examined from 3 populations from different altitudes (Kilis, 697 m; Şanlıurfa, 891 m; Diyarbakır, 1058 m) from southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Age structure was determined by using skeletochronology. Males in all populations were the larger sex; therefore, the populations showed male biases that were negative by the sexual size dimorphism index. This study was carried out to determine the spider fauna in barley and wheat fields of Northern Cyprus. It was conducted in 36 cereal fields of 24 villages in the Lefkoşa, Girne, Güzelyurt, Gazimağusa, and İskele districts in the years 2012 and 2013. In the study, the Oxyopidae (2), Thomisidae (5), Salticidae (2), Araneidae (3), Philodromidae (2), Clubionidae (3), and Theridiidae (1) families from Araneae were determined. Seventeen of the 18 species, excluding Kochiura aulica (C. L. Koch), were found for the first time and included in the fauna of Northern Cyprus.

A survey on freshwater oligochaetes was conducted between October 2011 and June 2013 in selected wetlands of the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shimoga districts of Karnataka, India. In this study, 260 wetlands were sampled and examined for the presence of microdriles. Sixteen species of aquatic oligochaetes were recorded. Of these, 10 species belonged to the family Naididae (monophyletic) and 6 species to the family Pristinidae. The species' distribution patterns in different water bodies and habitat specificity (if any) in the study area are presented.

Five gall midge species were identified as new records for the fauna of Iran from the Joghatay region of Razavi Khorasan Province, NE Iran. These species are Campylomyza flavipes Meigen, 1818 (Micromyinae); Micromya lucorum Rondani, 1840 (Micromyinae); Rabdophaga salicis (Schrank, 1803) (Cecidomyiinae); Rhopalomyia efremovi Fedotova, 1999 (Cecidomyiinae); and Rhopalomyia monogynasphaera Fedotova, 1999 (Cecidomyiinae). As many parts of the country have not been studied in terms of Cecidomyiidae fauna, the gall midge fauna of Iran will be increased considerably with further research.

They are Eriophyes tiliae (Nalepa, 1890) on Tilia begonifolia (Tiliaceae); Aceria tuberculatus Nalepa, 1891 on Tanacetum parthenium (Asteraceae); and Leipothrix liroi (Roiv., 1947) Jocic and Petanovic (2012) on Primula sp. (Primulaceae).

Current data on the distribution and ecology of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Turkey are limited. Furthermore, lynx in the Caucasus region are likely to represent a subspecies of the Eurasian lynx, the Caucasian lynx (L. l. dinniki). Throughout its range, lynx increasingly face threats due to human activity, with habitat loss and prey depletion being of particular concern in eastern Turkey. In total, 626 individuals of Alburnus mossulensis and 586 individuals of Acanthobrama marmid were collected monthly from Karakaya Dam Lake on the upper Euphrates River. The gonadosomatic index, somatic condition, oocyte size, and fecundity were calculated on a monthly basis. Reading of scales indicated that the maximum age was 4+ years for A. mossulensis and A. marmid. The estimated length-weight relationships were W = 0.206 × FL^{2.065} for females and W = 0.119 × FL^{2.138} for males in A. mossulensis, and W = 0.029 × FL^{2.678} for females and W = 0.030 × FL^{2.631} for males in A. marmid. Changes In Abundance And Community Structure Of The Zooplankton Population During The 2008 Mucilage Event In The Northeastern Marmara Sea, Melek İşi̇ni̇bi̇li̇r Okyar, Funda Üstün, Deni̇z Ayşe Orun

The composition and abundance of zooplankton and the corresponding environmental conditions were investigated during the 2008 mucilage event (April-December 2008) in the Marmara Sea. As a result, 46 zooplanktonic taxa were identified. Copepods and cladocerans were generally the most abundant groups. Mnemiopsis leidyi had a significant seasonality, and abundance was related to fluctuations in temperature and salinity. The most important species were Acartia clausi and Penilia avirostris, but these species did not reach their usual autumn maximum. As a result, the mucilage event in 2008 caused significant shifts in zooplankton abundance and community structure in the Marmara Sea.

We describe sexual dimorphism in coloration, size, and shape in 48 specimens (19 males and 29 females) of the bridled skink, Trachylepis vittata (Olivier, 1804), collected from western regions of the Iranian Plateau. For the analyses, we used 29 metric and 9 meristic characters. Our study showed the existence of slight sexual size dimorphism in body and head size between the sexes. Males had significantly smaller heads and narrower bodies than females. Furthermore, males and females were different in the structure of the cloaca. The possible scenarios behind sexual dimorphism in this lizard are discussed.

We studied karyotype and chromosomal characteristics of 3 species of five-toed jerboa from central Iran, including Allactaga firouzi, A. williamsi, and A. elater. This study revealed that the 3 species possessed a diploid number of 48 chromosomes. The first pair of chromosomes was significantly larger than other chromosomes in all 3 species. The total length of the haploid genome of Allactaga elater was longer than those of the other 2 species, and most of the chromosomes of the 3 species were metacentric. In this study, age estimation using skeletochronology was done in 43 specimens (6 males, 29 females, 8 juv.) of Anatololacerta anatolica living in the vicinity of Çanakkale. When the cross-sections taken from phalanges were examined, the median age for the Çanakkale population was 4 years. The maximum age was calculated as 10 years for female individuals, and the maximum snout-vent length (SVL) of female individuals was measured as 74.18 mm. We studied the unusual wintering records of some rare pipit species during winter in Hatay Province, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey. The study was carried out in order to determine the species of the superorder Neuropterida in the Protected Area Jasen, Central Macedonia. In July 2011, insect net sampling was used to obtain the Neuropterida from various habitats in the area. A total of 44 species from 10 families were determined, and 17 of these species were new records for the Macedonian fauna. Notes on ecology and altitudinal distribution of the Neuropterida in the area are also provided.

The stomach contents of juvenile sharpsnout seabream, Diplodus puntazzo, and juvenile two-banded seabream, Diplodus vulgaris, were investigated in order to determine feeding habits and diet overlap among them. Fish were collected from October 2008 to August 2009 using a beach seine net from the Çanakkale coasts of Turkey. Blooms of jellyfishes were studied at 3 sites, namely Bhanbore, Mirpur Sakro, and Keti Bunder. The sampling was carried out from April 2005 to March 2006. Only 2 species of jellyfish, Catostylus perezi and Rhizostoma pulmo, were found in samples. C. perezi was present at all 3 sampling sites, whereas R. pulmo was found only at Keti Bunder. Specimens of C. perezi appeared in the subsurface waters for a period of 6-8 months during April to August 2006 and February to March 2006. A record of the Italian wall lizard, Podarcis siculus (Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810), from Atakum (Samsun, Central Black Sea Region) is provided in this study. In addition, 5 specimens (3 males and 2 females) from Atakum (Samsun) and 14 specimens (7 males and 7 females) from Gelibolu (Çanakkale, Thrace), with records provided recently, were evaluated in terms of measurements, pholidosis, and color and pattern. With the record from Samsun, the Italian wall lizard's distributional range has been extended about 360 km eastwards. From the serial studies of the Braconidae fauna of Turkey, the subfamily Doryctinae was treated. Adult specimens were collected from various habitats of Turkey between 1979 and 2013. Extensive surveys were carried out between 1992 and 2011 to determine the occurrence and distribution of the neuropteran superfamilies of Mantispoidea, Osmyloidea, and Myrmeleontoidea in Bursa, northwestern Turkey. A total of 345 specimens from 20 species belonging to 7 families were collected at 48 localities using a sweep net. The families of Berothidae, Dilaridae, Mantispidae, Osmylidae, Ascalaphidae, Myrmeleontidae, and Nemopteridae were represented by 1, 1, 3, 1, 3, 10, and 1 species, respectively. Life history characteristics (e.g., longevity, age at maturity, body size, and body mass) of the green toad, Bufotes variabilis, were investigated from 2 populations inhabiting different altitudes (Çankırı, 960 m a.s.l., n = 57; Adana, 13 m a.s.l., n = 52) in Turkey. Age was determined using skeletochronology. The oldest individual was 11 years old (range: 4-11 years) in the highland population, while the oldest individual was 6 years old in the lowland population (range: 2-6 years). A countrywide White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) nest census was carried out in Lithuania in 2009 and 2010 by over 20 observers using standardised equipment and methods. The census revealed that the White Stork population has doubled since the previous census in 1994, possibly due to favourable changes in farming practices, with birds increasingly settling on the overhead electricity line poles and gradually abandoning nests in trees. In total, 21,192 White Stork nests were recorded, of which 18,782 (81.4%) were occupied by breeding birds, compared to 9400 occupied nests recorded in 1994. In this study carried out on specimens collected in inner western Anatolia, 13 species belonging to Synergus were recorded. Eight species were recorded for the first time from Turkey. Due to the associated oak galls, the highest number (6 species) were observed inside the galls of Aphelonyx persica. Data about host oaks, emergence time of adults, and associated oak galls are given.

This study aimed to identify the ground ensign scale insects in 5 provinces (Ağrı, Bitlis, Hakkari, Iğdır, and Van) in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. In order to achieve this goal, Ortheziidae species were collected from natural and cultivated plants in the 5 provinces listed above between 2005 and 2008. A total of 3 species were found, among them 2 species (Orthezia maroccana Kozár & Konczné Benedicty and Orthezia yashushii Kuwana) that are new records for the Turkish scale insect fauna.

We investigated the olfactory response of the predatory insect H. variegata when receiving odors pertaining to Aphis fabae infected by B. bassiana EUT116 at 0-, 24-, 48-, and 72-h intervals in a Y-tube olfactometer set-up. In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear.
