Medon assingi sp. N. From Anatolia is described, and its diagnostic characters are illustrated. A total of 22 species of Medon are now known from Turkey. Moreover, additional records are reported for 14 species of the genus Medon from Turkey.

For the first time, morphological polymorphism among the anterior and posterior sets of primary teeth of the periphallic organ was observed among natural populations of Drosophila. Natural and laboratory populations of 3 different species (D. Ananassae, D. Bipectinata, and D. Malerkotliana) belonging to the ananassae subgroup were used to study the intra- and interspecific variations in the number of teeth of the anterior and posterior sets of the periphallic organ. The systematic position of the endemic Madagascan genus Amberiana Dist. İs studied using DNA sequences (the mitochondrial 12S rDNA subunit) for the first time. The phylogenetic relationships within the superfamily Pentatomoidea were computed using neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony, minimum evolution, and maximum likelihood methods, as well as Bayesian estimation. All results based on the mtDNA analyses stand in contrast with previous morphological data. The mtDNA analysis showed close relationships of the genus Amberiana to the genus Sehirus (Cydnidae: Sehirinae) and to species of the family Parastrachiidae, whereas the morphology indicated that the genus was a typical representative of the family Dinidoridae. …

In this study, helminth parasites of the thicklip grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) in Beymelek Lagoon, Antalya (Turkey) were studied to determine the effect of seasonal changes and host size, age, and sex on the incidence of parasitic helminth infection. Three helminth species were identified: Ligophorus angustus Euzet and Suriano 1977 (Monogenea) on the gills, and Saccocoelium obesum Looss, (Digenea) and Neoechinorhynchus agilis (Rudolphi, 1819) (Acanthocephala) in the intestine. Among these species, S. Obesum was the most common species, with an overall prevalence and mean intensity of 42.7% and 13.6 ± 12.5 parasites/fish, respectively. L. The rocky mouse, Apodemus mystacinus, is a rodent species distributed in Anatolia. A total of 108 specimens from 19 localities in Turkey were collected to study the molecular variation of A. Mystacinus inferred from RFLP of mtDNA cytochrome b (cytb) and D-loop. MboI, HaeIII, and RsaI from cytb digestion and MboI, BfaI, and HinfI from D-loop digestion showed differentiation among the studied specimens. The UPGMA dendrogram of the combined data of cytb and D-loop indicated 3 main clades, A. M. Euxinus, A. M. Mystacinus, and A. M. Smyrnensis, distributed in Turkey. The zooplankton composition of Lake Ladik, located in Samsun Province in northern Turkey, was investigated monthly between November 2009 and October 2010. Some physicochemical parameters such as temperature of surface water, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, conductivity, and total dissolved solids were also evaluated. A total of 29 zooplankton species were identified. These species were represented by three main groups: Rotifera (59%), Cladocera (24%), and Copepoda (17%). The maximum and minimum numbers of species were found in July and October, respectively. Termination of the life cycle of sexually reproducing aphids usually takes place in autumn, during October and November, in the climatic conditions of Central Europe. However, episodes of warm weather are suspected to trigger prolongation of the life cycle. Observations of Stomaphis spp. İn early winter of 2013/2014 in southern Poland support this thesis. Surprisingly, adult females of two species were collected as late as early January and early March. This study investigated the age-length relationship, length-weight relationship, somatic condition, gonadosomatic index, and reproduction properties of Cyprinion macrostomus and Cyprinion kais. C. Kais is an endemic species included on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in the Tigris-Euphrates Basin. A total of 153 C. Macrostomus and 114 C. Kais were collected. The estimated length-weight relationships were W = 0.725 × FL2.92 (r2 = 0.87) for C. Macrostomus and W = 0.417 × FL3.02 (r2 = 0.93) for C. Kais. In this study, the age structure of an Asaccus barani sample from Şanlıurfa (southeastern Anatolia, Turkey) was determined by skeletochronology for the first time. A total of 17 preserved adults (7♂♂, 10♀♀) were evaluated, and the maximum observed lifespan was recorded as 6 years in males and 5 years in females. The first line of arrested growth was partially eroded by endosteal resorption in 29% of individuals and completely eroded in 18%. We measured body size (snout-vent length, SVL) for three populations of Ommatotriton ophryticus newts in Turkey and estimated age using the skeletochronological method. Age was determined by counting the lines of arrested growth in cross-sections taken from phalanges. SVL was similar among populations and ranged between 58.41 and 85.78 mm in males and 50.33 and 71.56 mm in females. Males were significantly larger than females in all populations. Age at maturity was 4-6 years in males and 5-6 years in females. The average age of males and females did not differ significantly. Maximum age ranged from 9 to 12 years …

Length-weight relationships, distribution of length and weight groups, sex ratio, and length compositions of the crayfish Astacus leptodactylus (Esch., 1823) population in Lake İznik (Bursa), along with some reproductive-period characteristics (spawning periods, pleopod egg numbers, and egg incubation periods), were investigated between February 2010 and May 2011. For this purpose, 1897 freshwater crayfish samples (896 female, 1001 male) were collected, using fyke nets of 34-mm nominal bar length. Seven aphid species are recorded from the countries of the Middle East and the Caucasus for the first time, of which three aphid species are new records for Turkey, two species for Lebanon, and one species each for Iran and Georgia. New host plant genera are reported for Aphis cephalariae Barjadze, Anoecia vagans (Koch), and Macrosiphum symphyti Barjadze and Chakvetadze. Information on biology and geographical distribution for each species is also provided.

The breeding biology, behavior, and diet of Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus were studied during 2 breeding seasons in forests in southwestern Iran (n = 3 nests) from April to June in 2012 and 2013. All nests faced west to east on the upper edges of cliffs. Eggs were laid during 7-11 March. The clutch size was 3 eggs and incubation period was 31 ± 1 days. Brood reduction was observed in one of the nests (in the first year), and mortality of the smallest chicks occurred during the second week after hatching. Total Mercury Concentration In The Kidneys Of Birds From Poland, Ignacy Kitowski, Radoslaw Kowalski, Andrzej Komosa, Agnieszka Sujak

A study was conducted on mercury renal concentration in 154 individuals of 28 species of birds with various habitat and trophic preferences. The highest geometric mean concentrations of Hg were found in large piscivorous birds such as Cormorant and Grey Heron. The maximum mercury levels were noted for individuals of White-tailed Eagle and Great Crested Grebe. Significant differences in renal mercury concentration between Sparrowhawk individuals were found in winter and in spring. Male Sparrowhawks generally accumulated rather more mercury in their kidneys than the females. The burrowing goby, Trypauchen vagina, is recorded for the first time from the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. Only one other record is known for this species from the Persian Gulf; that record is from Kuwait. The subject record is a new addition to the ichthyofauna of Iran resulting from four T. Vagina specimens being collected from north of Qeshm Island in the Khoran Strait (26°56?N, 55°54?E) in the Persian Gulf.

Zooplankton was studied seasonally between 2009 and 2011 in İskenderun Bay in order to determine temporal variations in abundance, biomass, and size structure and their relationships with environmental factors. Zooplankton sampling was performed vertically using a WP-2 net (200-µm). A total of 30 zooplankton taxonomic groups were identified. Cladocera was the dominant group, and together with Copepoda and Appendicularia constituted approximately 90% of zooplankton. In this study, a total of 36 (12♂♂, 18♀♀, 6 juveniles) Hemidactylus turcicus specimens, caught in the vicinity of Muğla (Turkey) between 2006 and 2011, were evaluated using the skeletochronology method. The mean snout-to-vent length (SVL) was measured as 28.45 ± 1.92 mm for juveniles, 50.53 ± 1.06 mm for males, and 51.1 ± 0.75 mm for females. When the cross-sections were examined, the age range was determined to be 4-8 years in the males and 4-9 years in the females. Individuals reach sexual maturity in 2-3 years. The water bears (Tardigrada) from Colombia are rather poorly known; thus, the aim of this research was to study the composition of tardigrade fauna inhabiting epiphytic and rock mosses in a high Andean forest in Guatavita. A 25-m2 plot was delimited and 6 randomly chosen trees with epiphytic mosses were sampled. Twelve samples of epiphytic mosses and 6 of rock mosses were collected and examined. Field margins act as shelters for different arthropod taxa in agricultural fields. Several factors may promote seasonal changes in arthropod communities, especially in regions with marked seasonality, such as Mediterranean areas. Epigeic arthropods were sampled from the margins of fields located in northwestern Portugal during 2 contrasting seasons, spring and autumn. Organisms were identified to family or order level and seasonal variation in arthropod communities was evaluated. Roost characteristics of Indian flying fox Pteropus giganteus at the Jinnah (n = 1052) and Lalazar (n = 40) gardens in Lahore were observed for a period of 1 year to find roost preferences in these bats. The Jinnah garden harbors 4119 trees belonging to 46 families, 103 genera, and 132 species, of which 44 trees belonging to 17 families, 19 genera, and 21 species served as bat roosts. The reproduction, postnatal development, and social behaviors of the Transcaucasian mole vole (Ellobius lutescens) were studied in the laboratory in 2012/2013. The collected voles were kept in glass cages in captivity conditions and observations were made throughout the year. The litter size, gestation period, neonate weight, eye-opening, weaning, and earliest sexual maturity age were observed. Pups were born with 'nipple-seizing incisors'. These incisors were different from those of adults. The molars and normal incisor eruption appeared after 19-21 days. Females have three pairs of nipples. The relationships between size (length and width) of the lagenar (asteriscus) and the utricular (lapillus) otoliths and body length for five cyprinid fish species, freshwater bream Abramis brama, white bream Blicca bjoerkna, Prussian carp Carassius gibelio, brond-snout Chondrostoma regium, and rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus, collected from Lake Ladik from November 2009 through October 2010, are presented. The right and left side measurements of otoliths were pooled in all cases except asteriscus length in Prussian carp. Effects Of The Pyrethroid Insecticide Deltamethrin On The Hemocytes Of Galleria Mellonella, Deni̇z Kurt, Tamer Kayiş

In the present study, the effects of deltamethrin on cell-mediated immune response and genotoxic damage of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were investigated. Different concentrations of deltamethrin (5, 20, 50, 100, and 150 µg) were administered to G. mellonella at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. Five types of hemocytes were identified in G. mellonella: prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, granulocytes, spherulocytes, and oenocytes. Total hemocyte counts (THCs) were significantly affected by deltamethrin. Sea anemones (order Actiniaria) are among the most widespread invertebrates in the tropical waters. The anthozoans Stichodactyla haddoni (Saville-Kent, 1893) and Stichodactyla tapetum (Hemprich and Ehrenberg in Ehrenberg, 1834) (family Stichodactylidae) were reported for the first time from the southeastern coast of Iran, Chabahar Bay, Tiss zone. The specimens of S. haddoni and S. tapetum were collected by hand from the intertidal zone of sand and rock substrates in April 2012. From November 2013 to March 2014, 14 female specimens of the nonindigenous penaeid species northern brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus were caught in Thermaikos Gulf and Nestos estuaries (northern Aegean Sea), as well as one male in the Argolikos Gulf (central Aegean Sea) and 1 female in the Ionian Sea, further confirming their expansion range in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Along with the external morphology of the specimens, sequencing analysis of the 16S rDNA gene of mtDNA confirmed the species identification. Recognition of large mature individuals strongly supports that the already established species in the Greek seas could be efficiently reproduced.
