The ecological characteristics of ostracods in Lake Sünnet were monitored monthly between May 2005 and September 2007; 9 living and 5 subfossil ostracod taxa were recorded. Among the species, Ilyocypris getica was reported in Turkey for the first time, while Stenocypria fischeri was found for the second time in the country in 55 years. The most abundant species, Limnocythere inopinata, was collected in dry and wet months, while I. bradyi was the only species found in only the wet months. Growth and reproduction of the blotched picarel, Spicara maena (Linnaeus, 1758), were determined based on specimens (n = 2547) collected from the central Aegean Sea between July 2004 and June 2007. The samples consisted of 71.9% females, 16.2% males, and 11.9% immature individuals. The sex ratio of females to males was 1:0.23. The length-weight relationship was W = 0.011L^{3.02}, W = 0.011L^{3.00}, and W = 0.011L^{2.99} for the combined sexes, females, and males, respectively. The common chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is one of the most common and widespread of the Western Palearctic songbirds and breeds primarily in natural forests in the northern, western, and southwestern parts of Turkey. We reevaluated the distribution of this species in Turkey with recent observational data. Although this species has been considered a breeder in southeastern Turkey, results of this study suggest that it probably does not breed in the region any longer. We examined the effect of climatic (temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration) and topographic (altitude) variables on common chaffinch distribution in Turkey. Many amphibian populations are in decline throughout the world, and one of the most important proposed causes for this decline is agrochemicals, especially pesticides. This study considers the effects of 120 h exposure of embryos and larvae of the red-bellied toad, Bombina bombina, to trifluralin, an herbicide, with renewal acute toxicity tests at 22 ± 1 °C. Adult males and females were induced to breed by gonadotropin injection to obtain test organisms. Lethal concentration values were determined through PROBIT analysis. The species of Oopristus Steffan, 1968 (Hymenoptera: Torymidae: Toryminae: Monodontomerini) of Turkey were studied. Oopristus turkestanicus (Skriptshinsky, 1929) was reared from the eggs of Apodiphus amygdali (Germar, 1817) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Balcalı, Adana, as a new record for Turkey. Additionally, 2 new species of the genus, O. tayfursokmeni Tarla and Doğanlar, sp. nov., and O. erganicus Tarla and Doğanlar, sp. nov., were described. The species were also reared from eggs of A. amygdali collected in Antakya, Hatay province, and Ergani, Diyarbakır province, respectively. In this study, we established the presence of 25 aquatic beetle (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) species belonging to 5 subgenera from the Bayburt, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, and Trabzon provinces in the Black Sea region of Turkey. Specimens were collected between May 2007 and October 2007. Ten species are here recorded for the first time from the Black Sea region and 6 species are recorded for the first time in the research area. In addition, the habitats of these species found in the research area were given.

A chromosomal study of 2 populations of Allactaga williamsi from Konya province in Central Anatolia, Turkey, was performed. The diploid number of 48 chromosomes was found in all of the 5 specimens examined. All of the chromosomes except the Y were biarmed and could be identified by unique G-banding patterns. The C-banding analysis revealed a considerable amount of constitutive heterochromatin in all chromosomes. The C-band positive regions were distributed mainly in centromeric areas, whereas the Y chromosome stained uniformly and C-negatively. The present contribution outlines a first record of 5 encountered terrestrial gastropods new to Qatar. The preliminary account of these species and their zoogeographical origins are discussed. The species belong to 4 families: Subulinidae, with 2 genera, Zootecus and Allopeas; Polygyridae, with 1 genus, Polygra; Hygromiidae, with 1 genus, Monacha; and Helicidae, with 1 genus, Eobania.

Age, growth, and reproduction of the large-scaled gurnard were studied in the central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with the essential data for science-based management. A total of 2342 samples were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007 from İzmir Bay (Turkey). The size of the samples ranged from 3.4 to 15.2 cm total length and the samples were composed of 35.2% females, 25.7% males and 39.1% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.73. The Caspian Sea forms the southern limit of the distribution range of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), but little is known about its life history in this area. A total of 362 specimens were collected from the Gomishan wetland (southeast Caspian Sea, Iran) to describe the stickleback's life history characteristics. Samples were taken monthly between February and July of 2008. The maximum ages of the population observed were 2+ years for males and 3+ years for females. The aim of the present study was to describe the mollusk syntaxon associated with Cystoseira barbata and Mytilus galloprovincialis facies, which are widely distributed along the coasts of the Sinop Peninsula, Turkey. Four stations were chosen for each facies at depths of 0.5-5 m, and a total of 32 seasonal samplings were performed with 4 replicate groups between February 2006 and November 2006. The distribution of C-heterochromatin blocks and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the Taurus ground squirrel from Turkey was studied. The karyotype of Spermophilus taurensis comprised 40 chromosomes, the fundamental chromosome number (NF) was 80, and there were 76 autosomal arms (NFa). All autosomes and the X chromosome had pericentromeric C-heterochromatin, whereas the Y chromosome appeared to be entirely heterochromatic. NORs were observed in the terminal regions of the short arm of 2 pairs of submetacentric and 2 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. All the NORs were homomorphic and of medium size. Notes On Some Egyptian Lacertidae, Including A New Subspecies Of Mesalina, Involving The Seligmann Effect, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Shoshana Ashkenazi

These notes on some Egyptian lacertid lizards contribute to faunal data for the planning of biodiversity conservation. Mesalina bahaeldini curatorum n. subsp. is described from Suez, characterized by coloration and larger (fewer) body scales. Range extensions are documented for Acanthodactylus aegyptius, Mesalina olivieri, and M. rubropunctata. The previously reported occurrence of A. opheodurus in Sinai is doubted. The fact that the M. b. curatorum types were collected in the 1820s demonstrates the importance of museum collections.

During 2005-2007, 75 species of the freshwater testate amoebae were found in the vicinities of Lenkoran (SE Azerbaijan). The morphology of 14 species is described. One genus and 3 species are new to science (Difflugia pisciformis sp.n., D. pseudoclaviformis sp.n., Lenkorania gen.n., Pseudodifflugia magna sp.n.). Eleven species are new for the fauna of the Caucasus and Azerbaijan.

Grandidierella Trispinosa, A New Species Of Amphipod From The Karachi Coast, Pakistan (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae), Hala Bano, Quddusi Bashir Kazmi

Grandidierella trispinosa sp. nov., the first species of the genus Grandidierella Coutiére, 1904 from Pakistan, is described from specimens collected at Sandspit backwater, west of Karachi. The new species is illustrated and compared with allied species. The holotype is housed in the Marine Reference Collection and Resource Centre, University of Karachi.

A new species, Cryptognathus ayyildizi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Raphignathus bathursti Meyer and Ryke, 1960 (Raphignathidae), and Cheylostigmaeus californicus Summers and Ehara, 1965 (Stigmaeidae) are redescribed, and are new records for the Turkish fauna. Their worldwide distribution is also given.

Sixty-three species belonging to 16 genera and 8 tribes collected from different ecosystems of Turkey between 1979 and 2007 were examined. Insects from 4 genera, Streblocera Westwood, Chrysopophthorus Goidanich, Elasmosoma Ruthe, and Marshiella Shaw, and the tribe Neoneurini Bengtsson were recorded for the first time in Turkey. Ten monogonont rotifer species new for the Turkish fauna discovered in 2007 are discussed: Cephalodella delicata Wulfert, C. cf. forceps Donner, C. misgurnus Wulfert, Dipleuchlanis propatula (Gosse), Encentrum limicola Otto, E. mustela (Milne), Lecane aculeate (Jakubski), L. paradoxa (Steinecke), Notommata glyphura Wulfert, and Proales similis de Beauchamp. Eight are widely distributed, but C. cf. forceps Donner and L. paradoxa (Steinecke) have been recorded only from the Palearctic. Important parts of the trophi structure of some species are shown using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, pH, and water temperature were also measured.

Twenty-five species of Cephidae are reported from Turkey based on literature records and specimens collected mainly from Central Anatolia. Of these Cephus fumipennis Eversmann, C. nigrinus Thomson, C. pulcher Tischbein, C. rjabovi Dovnar-Zapolskij, C. sareptanus Dovnar-Zapolskij, C. spinipes (Panzer), Calameuta (Calameuta) filiformis (Eversmann), C. (Calameuta) punctata (Klug), Hartigia linearis (Schrank), and H. xanthostoma (Eversmann) are recorded for the first time both in Central Anatolia and Turkey. A checklist of the family, including new records, is provided. Distribution patterns of the species in relation to the last glacial age are discussed.

Scale insects in cultivated and non-cultivated areas in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus were surveyed between 2005 and 2007. This study showed that Diaspididae and Coccidae were the most common families, with total numbers of 23 and 13 species, respectively. The remaining families contained 1 to 4 species. A total of 41 freshwater ostracod species belonging to 21 genera was collected from 144 different aquatic bodies in the Bolu region during the summer of 2006. The genus Schellencandona and 12 species (Candona weltneri, C. sanociensis, C. lactea, Fabaeformiscandona cf. breuili, F. balatonica, F. brevicornis, F. protzi, F. latens, Schellencandona cf. belgica, Pseudocandona cf. semicognita, Potamocypris similis, and P. smaragdina) are new for the Turkish Ostracoda fauna. The distribution of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in Cricetulus migratorius and Meriones tristrami from Central Anatolia was determined. In the karyotype of Cricetulus migratorius the diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number are 22, 44, and 40, respectively. The diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number of Meriones tristrami are 72, 84, and 80, respectively. In Cricetulus migratorius, NORs occur in the telomeric regions of metacentric and subtelocentric autosome pairs. Furthermore, terminally located NORs in metacentric and acrocentric autosomes of Meriones tristrami are presented in this present paper.

This study examined the atrioventricular conducting system in 4 adult male hedgehogs (Hemiechinus auritus). The histological structure of these components was studied using routine histological methods. The AVN was located at the lower and anterior part of the interatrial septum, near the root of the aorta. It was almost oval and consisted of twisted cells. Internodal pathways in the hedgehog heart were not observed, but there were numerous purkinje-like fibers within the myocardium of the atrium. This study compared the protein, lipid, and glycogen reserves in recently emerged unfed female and male Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to those in 5- and 10-day-old wasps fed honey. Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were used as host species. The mean level of protein in both sexes increased significantly from emergence to day 5, and then returned to emergence levels on day 10 in females, but remained constant in males during the same period. Scaldfish (Arnoglossus laterna) (n = 1892) were caught in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea) from January 2005 to December 2006. Total length and weight of all specimens ranged from 3.9 to 16.0 cm and from 0.47 to 41.63 g, respectively. The overall ratio of females to males was 1:1.91.
