Helminth Parasites Of The Eastern Spadefoot Toad,Pelobates Syriacus (Pelobatidae), From Turkey, Hi̇kmet S. Yildirimhan, Charles R. Bursey

Ninety-one eastern spadefoot toads, Pelobates syriacus, were collected from 3 localities in Turkey between 1993 and 2003 and examined for helminths. One species of Monogenea (Polystoma sp.) and 3 species of Nematoda (Aplectana brumpti, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Skrjabinelazia taurica) were found. Pelobates syriacus represents a new host record for Polystoma sp. and S. taurica.

Abraxas pantaria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), the spotted ash looper (Light Magpie), is recognized as a new pest of common ash, Fraxinus excelsior (L.) in the eastern part of Turkey. Description of different developmental stages of A. pantaria is given. Its development, biology, damage, and parasitoids were studied in the field (Aras Valley, Karakurt, Sarıkamış, Kars Province) and partly in the laboratory during 2004-2006. A short review of the family Damaeolidae Grandjean, 1965 is provided with the first records of Damaeolus asperatus (Berlese, 1904) and Damaeolus ornatissimus Csiszár, 1962 from Turkey. Identification key to 11 known species of the family is given. Scanning electron microscopy photographs of the newly recorded species are also provided.

Around the beginning of the 1990s, these islands were designated as a marine and terrestrial reserve, mainly for the protection of the Farasan gazelle, which is the only wild ungulate present on the archipelago. A study of the anomuran crustaceans found in Fethiye Bay, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, revealed 22 species belonging to 4 families (Diogenidae, Paguridae, Galathaeidae, and Porcellanidae). Possibilities for the management of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) on stored products using coloured lighting systems was assessed in this study. Adult beetles were exposed in a choice chamber to red, blue, green, and clear tungsten light. T. castaneum adults preferred tungsten, blue, and green lights, and avoided red light. For each colour, beetles were separately reared for 3 generations. Beetles preferred the colour in which they were reared, except for red, which was avoided even by the beetles reared in a red-coloured environment for 3 generations under duress. The Effect Of Caloric Restriction On The Population Density Of Freshwater Rotifers (Brachionus Calyciflorus), Ni̇lgün Özdemi̇r, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş

The effects of caloric restriction (CR) on the population density of freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) were investigated in the present study. During experiments with different CRs, groups of rotifers were fed with Chlorella sp. at the same concentrations of 1.5 × 10^6 cells/mL at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h intervals for 20 days. Significant changes were observed both in the population density and the peak days in groups subjected to different CRs (P < 0.01). The highest peak in population density was obtained on the fifth day for rotifers fed in 12 h intervals (269 ± 40.12 individuals/mL, mean ± SD). The rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.608 ± 0.073 to 0.288 ± 0.053, depending on the feeding intervals. The results show that CR affected the population density of B. calyciflorus.

This study aims to provide information about the population structure of Mauremys rivulata at the ancient Claros site near Selçuk, in İzmir province. To achieve this goal, a total of 120 turtles (27 males, 70 females, 23 juveniles) were marked and 33 turtles were recaptured between May 2004 and April 2005. Of these recaptured turtles, 20 were female (60.6%), 9 were male (27.3%), and 4 were juveniles (12.1%). The average population size was estimated at 217. This corresponds to 434 individuals/ha. The mean body mass was 189 ± 147.5 g, which corresponds to a mean body mass of 82 kg/ha. …

Seasonal Dynamics And Spatial Distribution Of Dactylogyrus Crucifer Wagener, 1857 On The Gills Of Roach (Rutilus Rutilus L.) From Lake Sapanca, Turkey, Erhan Soylu, Bahadti̇n Rüzgar, Meral Soylu

This study determined the seasonal dynamics and spatial distribution of the monogenean parasite Dactylogyrus crucifer on the gills of roach Rutilus rutilus from Lake Sapanca, Turkey. A total of 183 specimens of roach between January and November 2005 were examined in monthly intervals. The highest mean intensity was recorded in March (227.1 ± 87.14) and the lowest in November (13.3 ± 8.2). Fifty three R. rutilus specimens were therefore investigated for spatial distribution of D. crucifer in March 2006. No significant differences in distribution were found according to any of the spatial determinants.

Parasitism of lepidopteran larvae by braconid wasps has significant effects on host hemolymph proteins and the physiology of the host insect. In this study the post-parasitism effects of a gregarious idiobiont ectoparasitoid (Bracon hebetor) on hemolymph plasma proteins in the final instar larvae of the host (Ephestia kuehniella) were investigated. Hemolymph plasma proteins were analyzed using spectrophotometry and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Mesopotamian spiny eels, Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Banks & Solender, 1794), were collected from a large dam lake located on the Euphrates River in order to determine the most reliable ageing method among different hard structures and to estimate growth parameters. Vertebra, otolith, and opercle series were removed from 195 individuals. Vertebrae displayed the most interpretable annulus formations. Total length ranged from 14.4 cm to 76.9 cm and total weight ranged from 6.0 g to 950.0 g. The length and weight frequency distribution was significantly different between the 2 sexes (K-S test, P < 0.001). The length-weight relationship, determined as W = 0.004TL^{2.84} (r = 0.98), revealed no sex-based significant difference (GLM, P > 0.05). Age classes ranged from 1 to 21 years …

Phylum Rotifera consists of aquatic, microscopic invertebrates inhabiting the freshwaters of the world. We report on some rotifers from the littoral zone of a pond in the University of Pune, Pune (India) (18^{°}33^'16^{"}N, 73^{°}49^´28^{"}E). A total of 13 rotifers species were found, including 5 new records to the Maharashtra state. Ptygura pedunculata (Edmondson, 1939) is reported for the first time from India and the Oriental region.

Nine aphid species from the Ondokuz Mayıs University Kurupelit campus in Samsun province, Turkey, were determined as new records for the Turkish fauna. These species were Aphis helianthi Monell in Riley & Monell, 1879; Macrosiphum impatientis (Williams, 1911); Macrosiphum mordvilkoi Miyazaki, 1968; Macrosiphum pallidum (Oestlunt, 1887); Uroleucon pseudoambrosiae (Olive, 1963); Cinara maghrebica Mimeur, 1934; Cinara wahluca Hottes, 1952; Stomaphis cupressi (Pintera, 1965); and Maculolachnus submacula (Walker, 1848).

The occurrence of epizoic ciliates on the juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus L., 1758, collected monthly by fishing net in Sinop's Sarıkum Lagoon Lake during the period from May 2003 to April 2004, was investigated. Five epizoic ciliate species, Trichodina jadranica (Raabe, 1958) Haider, 1964; Trichodina domerguei Wallengren, 1897; Riboscyphidia sp.; Ambiphrya sp.; and Vorticella sp., were found after examination of 296 juvenile flounder. Among these, T. jadranica was the dominant species. The species of Gugolzia (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae) in Europe and Turkey were reviewed, and an identification key for differentiating the species is provided. Newly discovered diagnostic characters of the genus were added to the diagnoses given by earlier authors. Species were recorded as parasitoids of phytophagous Eurytomidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea). Data are given on the distribution of 40 species belonging to the subfamilies Exoristinae and Tachininae that were collected by the first author in Fars province, Iran, during 2006-2007. In all, 22 species were recorded for the first time from Iran and 34 species from Fars province. Erynniopsis antennata (Rondani, 1861) was reared for the first time on the host Diorhabda elongate (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Investigations of the inland water bodies of southeast Azerbaijan (mainly near the city of Lenkoran and its suburbs) yielded 11 additional species of freshwater testate amoebae. Among these, 7 species (Oopyxis lenkoranica sp.n., Pentagonia azerbaijanica sp.n., Difflugia lenkoranica sp.n., D.talyshica sp.n., D.sapnakeranica sp.n., D.pressula sp.n., and D.girkanica sp.n.) are new to science. Descriptions of all 11 species are given.

Distributional data and the chorotype of all known taxa of Turkish species of the subgenus Microlaccobius Gentili, 1974 are summarized. The taxonomic position of Laccobius gracilis persicus Gentili, 1974 is discussed and L. persicus is elevated to the level of valid species and new record for the Turkish fauna. A short identification key of Turkish species of the subgenus is also given.

Knowledge about leptostracans from the Mediterranean Sea is still scarce. Examination of samples collected from the Aegean Sea off Turkey and from Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea revealed new localities and range extensions for 2 species of leptostracans: Nebalia strausi Risso, 1826, and N. kocatasi Moreira, Koçak, and Katagan, 2007. The record of N. kocatasi is the first for Cyprus and for the Levantine Basin. Additional specimens (Nebalia sp. 1 and Nebalia sp. 2) might prove to belong to 2 new species but the lack of material prevents their formal description.

This study investigated the histology of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa (Forskål, 1775). The results obtained with light microscopy show that the androgenic gland in this species consists of 2 cell types. Type 1 cells are small and do not contain a secretory product. Type 2 cells are considerably larger and may produce a proteinaceous secretion. This study identified the location and structure of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa, which is an economically important brachyuran crab, and revealed the chemical nature of the secretions produced by its cells.

Between April 2007 and October 2008 we collected 1995 horse mackerel specimens from the territorial waters of the Bulgarian Black Sea. Age, length, and weight of these specimens were determined to estimate length-weight relationships and age composition. The present study utilized otolith characterization to determine age. The sex ratio was 1:1.36686 (M:F). The prevalent age classes were 2+, 3+, and 4+. The exponent b of equation resulted in the value 3.3046, which indicates that the weight growth is positive allometric. Age, growth, length-weight relationship and reproduction were investigated for striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus L., 1758) collected from Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya, Turkey) between February 2006 and January 2007. In this study, length and weight data are presented for 33 fish species inhabiting littoral habitats off the Yumurtalık coast. Samples were collected with combined gill and trammel nets. Parameters of the length-weight relationships were estimated for 14 species. The b values ranged between 2.35 and 3.53. For remained 19 species, the parameter a was estimated by setting b = 3.0.

The karyotype of Pseudophoxinus antalyae was analyzed using G-banding, C-banding, Ag-NOR staining, and Q-banding. Chromosome analysis of this species, which lives in the Berdan River and Berdan Dam Lake, was performed with the air-drying technique, using gill and fin epithelium cells. The diploid chromosome number of P. antalyae was determined to be 2n = 50, comprising 16 metacentric, 14 submetacentric, 12 subtelocentric, and 8 acrocentric (NF = 92) chromosomes. Females of some Stenopogon species were compared both systematically and phylogenetically utilizing spermatheca morphology. The spermathecae of 8 species and 2 subspecies of Stenopogon (S. coracinus, S. elongatus S. flavibarbis, S. junceus, S. laevigatus, S. nigriventris, S. schisticolor, S. strateagus, S. sabaudus harpax, and S. xanthotrichus xanthomelas) were examined using a scanning electron microscope and subsequently analyzed with cluster analysis. To determine the predatory mite family Phytoseiidae associated with spider mites in northwest Iran, a survey was carried out during 2006-2007. Nineteen species from 7 genera of the family Phytoseiidae were collected and identified. Measurements are given and some morphological characters are discussed. A key is provided to identify the adult females of the known 27 species of Phytoseiidae of that area. The following new synonymies are proposed: Neoseiulus vardgesi (Arutunjan, 1968) as a junior synonym of N. zwoelferi (Dosse, 1957); Transeius caspiansis (Denmark and Daneshvar, 1982) and T. patellae (Karg, 1982) as junior synonyms of T. wainsteini (Gomelauri, 1968); …
