Feeding levels can vary in goat farms for several reasons. Underfeeding of gestating dairy goats can occur and may influence fetal follicle development and future reproductive performance in their offspring. The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of restricted feeding during the last third of gestation on some reproductive parameters in female offspring (F1). The genetic polymorphism of the casein genes and the evaluation of haplotype variability in Saanen and Thai Native breeds in Thailand were investigated. The 23 Saanen and 42 Thai Native goats were genotyped at CSN1S1, CSN2, CSN1S2, and CSN3 loci using sequencing techniques. Three variants of A, C, and E on the CSN1S1 gene locus were demonstrated. The genotypic frequencies of CSN1S1 AA, AC, and AE are shared by over 80% of the population. The CSN2 A and F alleles were observed. One lawful method to dispose of animal carcasses is composting. Mortality composting is a “green” method that provides the producer with valuable soil amendments. Composting sites should be away from water sources and public areas. Some states require a facility and/or permit for carcass composting so producers should contact their State Veterinarian. Animal composting generates little to no odor and generates temperatures high enough to kill pathogens. Mortality composting is an aerobic process and requires a proper C:N ratio achieved by using a high carbon source to envelop the carcass, moisture content of roughly 50%, and available oxygen. Procyclic trypanosomes from wild tsetse flies were membrane-fed to Glossina morsitans centralis in order to develop an optimal technique for propagating field isolates. A 70% success rate was achieved in isolating Trypanosoma simiae and a variety of genotypes of T. congolense originating from G. pallidipes, G. brevipalpis and G. swynnertoni. Parasites matured into forms infective for mammals, and could be maintained by passage of gut forms to new groups of flies. In experiments with laboratory stocks, we also passaged immature gut infections of T. congolense and T. brucei from various tsetse species to G. m. centralis. The optimal technique was …

The pathological and electron-microscopic features of the first case of autochthonous leishmaniasis affecting a domestic goat in Kenya are described. They are similar to what have been described in man and other animals. Using a short amino-acid sequence common to all the species of leishmania as primers for kDNA synthesis, the intervening sequence of 120 bases was amplified in the goat's tissues by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The leishmania kinetoplast DNA sequence was detected in all the different infected tissues of the goat examined. The sensitivity and specificity of this assay are discussed.
