Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves., A. D. Garcia, R. Daly
Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves., A. D. Garcia, R. Daly
Dairy Science Publication Database
Respiratory disease is the second leading cause of death losses (scours is the first) in un-weaned heifer calves. Respiratory problems have increased by 34 percent in the last twenty years resulting in nearly 21 percent of all newborn calf losses (NAHMS. 2007). Heifers that survive continue to perform poorly as adult cows. In order to prevent this costly problem it is important to address both determinant and predisposing causes.

Enfermedad Respiratoria En Los Terneros Lecheros, Como Prevenirla, A. D. Garcia, A. R. Daly
Enfermedad Respiratoria En Los Terneros Lecheros, Como Prevenirla, A. D. Garcia, A. R. Daly
Dairy Science Publication Database

Alimentación Preventiva De La Vaca Lechera En Transición., A. D. Garcia, A. R. Hippen
Alimentación Preventiva De La Vaca Lechera En Transición., A. D. Garcia, A. R. Hippen
Dairy Science Publication Database

Ruminal And Plasma Responses In Dairy Cows To Drenching Or Feeding Glycerol, Peter Linke
Ruminal And Plasma Responses In Dairy Cows To Drenching Or Feeding Glycerol, Peter Linke
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Four Holstein dairy cows (137 DIM, 60 kg milk/d) were used in a Latin square with 1-wk periods to evaluate the effect of methods of oral delivery of glycerol on ruminal VFA and plasma concentrations of glucose, 6-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and insulin. All cows were fed only grass hay for ad libitum consumption during 12 h before the experiment. At the start of the experiment, time 0, all cows were fed 5 kg of cracked corn. Treatments administered at time 0 were: 1) control (C), no glycerol; 2) fed glycerol (F), 1 kg of glycerol solution (80% …

Dairies And Local Economic Development, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
This fact sheet is one in a series intended to answer — with science-based land-grant university research — questions frequently asked by the public about issues and needs affecting agricultural growth, urban expansion, and rural community development in South Dakota. During 2002, the year with latest available USDA figures, livestock production in South Dakota represented 50.7% of total agricultural cash receipts, followed by 42.4% for crops and 6.9% for government payments. Dairy products, at $178,176,000, were fifth of all agricultural cash receipts and were a highly significant portion of the state’s economy. In light of possible dairy expansion in the …
Influence Of Diets Formulated To Increase The Supply Of Ketones Or Ketone Precursors On The Carbohydrate Status And Performance Of Transition Dairy Cows, Jeffrey Michael Defrain
Influence Of Diets Formulated To Increase The Supply Of Ketones Or Ketone Precursors On The Carbohydrate Status And Performance Of Transition Dairy Cows, Jeffrey Michael Defrain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research to date has focused on increasing the supply of glucose precursors in transition dairy cows to reduce ketosis. Ketones and ketone bodies represent energy sources for body tissues; therefore, conserving blood glucose for lactose synthesis in the mammary gland. This led to the hypothesis that transition cows might benefit from diets formulated to stimulate rumen epithelial ketogenesis or dietary ingredients supplying ketone precursors. A series of experiments were conducted to study the impact of diets formulated to increase the supply of ketones (via feeding lactose, glycerol, or an alphaamylase enzyme preparation) or ketone precursors (feeding Ca soaps of longchain …

A Comparison Of Methods For On-Farm Determination Of Failure Of Passive Transfer Of Immunoglobulin To Dairy Calves, Ann Harvey
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Two commercially available, qualitative, on-farm test kits (Midland BioProducts Inc., Boone, lA), utilizing either serum or whole blood to evaluate failure of passive transfer (FPT) of immunoglobulins, were evaluated using 38 Holstein calves. Results from the kits were compared with refractometry determination of serum proteins and radial immunodiffusion determinations specific for IgG (RID; Triple J Farms, Bellingham,WA). Blood samples were collected immediately following birth before first colostrum feeding and at 48 h. At birth, serum protein concentrations averaged 4.52 g/dl and IgG averaged 8.6 mg/dl, respectively, for refractometer and RID. Forty eight hours after feeding colostrum, serum protein concentrations averaged …

Use Of The Relative Dose Response Assay To Determine The Vitamin A Status Of Neonatal Calves: Effects Of Season On Colostrum Quality And Immunological Parameters, Mary Jo Boner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plasma vitamin A is not a reliable indicator of vitamin A status. Therefore, the feasibility of using the relative dose response (RDR) assay as a method for determining vitamin A status of calves was examined. In addition, effects of colostrum quality and season on vitamin A status and health of calves were determined. Blood was sampled from the jugular vein of 16 newborn calves to establish values over a 24 h period for immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentration, hematocrit, serum protein concentration, and leukocyte differentials. Liver biopsies were performed at birth, and successfully completed for 11 calves. Blood samples were obtained …
