From April 21 st to April 25th, 1995 students from Utah State University's FW 462 class sampled the trophic gradient in Lake Powell between Bullfrog (Mile 99) and Hite Marinas (Mile 144). We sampled at 3-12 stations along the gradient, depending on the parameter measured. The purpose of the trip was three-fold. First, the primary objective of the class was to provide field and laboratory experiences in aquatic ecology for the students. Historically, thousands of Snake River Sockeye salmon returned to the Sawtooth Valley to spawn. Evermann (1896) reported that the Sawtooth Valley Lakes were teeming with red fish. Bjornn (1968) estimated that 4,360 sockeye returned to Redfish Lake in 1955. These numbers no longer exist. In the 1980's, less than 50 . Snake River sockeye salmon survived to spawn (Bowler 1990). Since 1990, only 14 sockeye have returned. Because of recent declines, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes (SBT) petitioned the National - Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to list · Snake River sockeye as endangered. We monitored wood duck (Aix sponsa) population expansion into the Milk River Valley in north central Montana during 1975-1993. First -ever observations of wood ducks in isolated pairs or groups occurred on or near the Milk River in Blaine, Phillips, and Valley counties during 1975-1979. Broods seen east of Nelson Reservoir in 1975 and near Malta in 1980 were the first-ever verification of production in this area. Natural pioneering was supplemented with the transplanting of 35 first-year wood ducks near Dodson and at Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in August 1980. Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge (Pathfinder NWR), located in Natrona and Carbon Counties, is 50 miles southwest of Casper, Wyoming. Pathfinder NWR, established in 1936, is a refuge and breeding area for migratory waterfowl. The refuge initially encompassed the entire Pathfinder Reservoir, an impoundment of the North Platte River. In 1965, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reduced it to four smaller units to allow more intensive management: the Sweetwater Arm, Goose Bay Unit, DeWeese Creek Unit, and the Sage Creek-Platte Unit. Prior to Euroamerican development, the Yakima River Basin was a major producer of salmon. Total runs of approximately 800,000 have declined to 3,000-5,000, or less than 1% of original run size. Three species are extinct in the basin, including summer chinook, coho, and sockeye.

Irrigation development, including the construction of unscreened diversions, the blockage of spawning and rearing habitat by reservoir dams, and the dewatering of spawning and rearing habitat, began in the mid-1800's and today totals approximately 500,000 acres. Historical records provide a wealth of information documenting irrigation development and its consequences on anadromous fish populations.

The Galician shelf off NW Spain (43N degrees 9W degrees) exhibits mesoscale spatial and temporal changes in biological productivity associated with upwelling. Spatial heterogeneity results from local geomorphic and land-sea interactions superimposed on the large scale atmospheric processes that produce upwelling. Wind-induced upwelling events, commonly of short (i.e., week) duration, are more common in the summer than in the winter. A Series of cruises, including some time series sampling, and satellite imagery analysis showed that surface upwelling was more common and persistent on the northern coast compared with the western coast off the coastal embayments, the Rias Bajas. Atlantic bluefin tuna have been managed at the international level by ICCAT for the past 25 years. Aquacultural research has been conducted collaboratively in Honduras since 1983 by the International Center for Aquaculture and Aquatic Environments, Auburn University, and the Direccion General de Pesca y Acuicultura, Secretaria de Recursos Naturales. This research was carried out at the El Carao National Fish Culture Research Center, Comayagua, Honduras, under the auspices of the USAID-financed Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative Research Support Program (PD/A CRSP). The goal of the PD/A CRSP is to increase tilapia yields by optimizing resource use in systems based predominantly on natural pond productivity.

A new blood-fluke, Cruoricola lates n. g., n. sp., is described from sea-bass Lates calcarifer cultured in Malaysia. It is also found in Thailand and Australia. All fish examined over 15 cm in length were infected in the type-locality. This sanguinicolid is differentiated from other genera by the spherical seminal vesicle; the large, single testis extending beyond the intestinal caeca; the medial, bi-lobed ovary; and the single column of submarginal, laterally directed, evenly spaced spines. It has separate genital pores which are close together. Adults are found predominantly in the mesenteric venules of the venous circulation. Juveniles are commonest in …

Based on three years of data collection on the periodicity of the spawning run, the gonadosomatic index (GSI), and gonad histology, the spawning season for Chesapeake Bay black drum was found to be significantly shorter and later compared to populations from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The GSI is maximal in early April when black drum first enter the Chesapeake Bay region in contrast to data from Florida where GSI peaks during February and March. I confirm that black drum from the Chesapeake Bay are batch spawners. These results match those found for populations of black drum in the …

Chitosans with various degrees of deacetylation (DD) were prepared from red shrimp (Solenocera prominentis). DD of chitosan was determined by infrared spectrum. The effect of urea on the conformation and chain flexibility of chitosan molecules with various DD was studied. The results show: 1) The intrinsic viscosities of chitosan solutions containing 4 M urea were higher than those without urea addition. It indicated the chitosan molecules in solutions containing urea have higher hydrodynamic volume than that without urea. It may due to urea increasing the intramolecular hydrogen bond formation. 2) The persistence lengths of chitosan molecules were longer in solutions …
