Prepared for Fremantle Ports
Cockburn Sound is the largest of the very few protected marine embayments along the lower west coast of Western Australia. It has been recognised as playing an integral role in the life history strategies of many marine species, including the highly valued snapper Pagrus auratus and blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus. Currently, the adult stocks of snapper in the West Coast Bioregion and blue swimmer crabs in Cockburn Sound are at depleted levels, most likely a result of high fishing pressure and below average recruitment in recent years for both species.

Press Release: No Rats Found, Lab Results On Six Bird Tests Received
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has received laboratory results on an initial group of bird carcasses collected on Rat Island in late May and Early April. Examination of the livers of two bald eagles, two glaucus winged gulls, one peregrine falcon, and one rock sandpiper all tested positive for the rodenticide brodifacoum. We are in the process of analyzing all of the viable bird remains and tissue samples collected, in order to more fully understand the cause of mortalities and more effectively plan future operations in the Aleutians. Results will be released when they are available. In addition, soil …

In recent years the profitability of the fishing industry in Western Australia has been severely impacted by a combination of the high cost and scarcity of labour, high fuel prices, a poor exchange rate and the recent global financial crisis. The prices for some locally caught fish species have been impacted by the significant growth in overseas aquaculture production.
These pressures have led to more serious scrutiny of fishing methods and the cost of business inputs. One of the business input costs that has been the subject of concern from industry is the fees paid by fishers to Government under …

This report outlines recommendations of a Working Group established by the CEO of the Department of Fisheries to advise on a proposed new model for fisheries consultation in Western Australia.
The proposed model provided to the Working Group for advice was developed based on the following objectives
1. Enhanced efficiency, cost effectiveness and flexibility.
2. Clarification between:
- fishing sector representation
- expertise based advice to the Department of Fisheries; and
- Department of Fisheries as the primary source of management advice to the Minister for Fisheries.
3. Enhancement of Department of Fisheries engagement with industry, stakeholders and the public.

State Of The Fisheries Report 2008/2009 Summary, W J. Fletcher, Karen Santoro
Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
The complete State ofthe Fisheries Report 2008/09 is published annually to provide a detailed level of reporting on the management of fisheries resources and their environment undertaken by the Department of Fisheries. The State ofthe Fisheries Report summarises the outcomes of many departmental activities undertaken during 2008/09 including management changes, compliance work and research to assess stock levels, monitor breeding stocks and undertake environmental assessments. It therefore provides a valuable reference point for the status of Western Australian fisheries of major importance to the commercial and recreational sectors, the aquaculture industry and for those interested in aquatic management. This annual …
Reports From Rat Island Reflect Successes And Concerns
Reports From Rat Island Reflect Successes And Concerns
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
After more than two weeks of intensive field monitoring on Alaska’s remote Rat Island, part of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, which was treated last year in an effort to eliminate invasive rats and restore seabird populations and other parts of the native ecosystem, biologists have found no sign of the invasive rats that have decimated native bird populations for more than 200 years. The same studies have documented that several bird species, including Aleutian cackling geese, ptarmigan, peregrine falcons, and black oyster catchers are nesting on the ten-square-mile island.

Western Water Law, Policy and Management: Ripples, Currents, and New Channels for Inquiry (Martz Summer Conference, June 3-5)
In many pockets of the American West, stresses and demands on water resources are overwhelming our capacity to effectively manage change and accommodate the diversity of interests and values associated with our limited water resources.
This event will offer an opportunity for lawyers, policymakers, and water professionals to engage the experts on the challenges and emerging solutions to the most pressing water policy and management issues of the day.
