The deep-sea lobster family, Polychelidae Wood-Mason, 1875, contains six genera and 38 species worldwide, of which nine species in three genera have been reported from Taiwan. Herein we present four new records of Polychelidae from Taiwan, namely Pentacheles validus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, Stereomastis surda (Galil, 2000), Willemoesia forceps A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, and W. leptodactyla (Thomson, 1873). A total of 13 species in four genera of Polychelidae are now known from Taiwan; a key to the species is provided.
Decadal Variation Of Wintertime Sea Surface Temperature In The Taiwan Strait, Yi-Chun Kuo, Ming-An Lee
Decadal Variation Of Wintertime Sea Surface Temperature In The Taiwan Strait, Yi-Chun Kuo, Ming-An Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Long-term advanced very-high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data with a resolution of 0.04° provided clearer views of sea surface temperature (SST) warming and variation associated with ENSO in the Taiwan Strait (TS) during wintertime (1981-2013). Over the 33 year period, the spatial average of winter SST warming in the TS reached to 3°C. From 1981- 2001, the SST exhibited an increasing trend, with the fastest warming taking place from 1991-2001 after which it seemed to pause. From 2002-2012, the SST showed a cooling trend (-0.08°C/yr). Spatial variation of the warming was distinct, with the highest values concentrated in the winter fronts region, …

The Diel Dynamics Of Ciliate Community In A Tide-Pool, Chien-Fu Chao, Bo-Wei Wang, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Kuo-Ping Chiang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
We investigated the diel cycle mechanism of a tide-pool ciliate community of the northeastern coast of Taiwan. The investigation was conducted on 17th-18th June (typical summer weather), and on 23th -24th July 2013 (10 days after a typhoon). In June, the tide-pool ecosystem was an independent and the excystment of ciliates in the tide-pool caused a dramatic increase in population abundance, as well as composition change. In July, there was no significant difference between the species composition in the tide-pool and that in the surrounding coastal water. However, the abundance of ciliates in the tide-pool was lower due to the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The 70 different samples of larval fish morphotypes have been successfully amplified and sequenced in detail via PCR amplification for the partial sequences of mtDNA CO I gene. The overall genetic similarities ranged from 83% to 100%. Totally 26 different fish species can be detected and analyzed. There are 16 fish species can be identified into specific level. However, there are remaining 12 species can be expected just into suggested fish generic level. Apparently, two major groups of taxa would be the members of Gobiidae and Apogonidae which comprised 50% of total species diversity, and also comprised 67% of total …

Fishing Vs. Climate Change: An Example Of Filefish (Thamnaconus Modestus) In The Northern East China Sea, Sukgeun Jung, Hyung Kee Cha
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The main cause of annual fluctuations in catch and species composition of fisheries is usually uncertain, but a prevailing view has been that fishing effects are more critical than environmental variability. Filefish is a good anecdote: many Korean fisheries scientists have attributed the sudden collapse of Korean filefish fisheries in the early 1990s to overfishing, especially by trawl fisheries in the northern East China Sea (NECS). However, interdisciplinary researches have revealed that climate-driven, multi-decadal variability in oceanic conditions impacts both fish and fisheries around the world. To test the two alternative hypotheses (i.e., fishing and climate) as the major cause …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) is one of the most important fish resources in the northeastern Taiwan. Because of the flourishing of Taiwanese seiner fisheries in recent years, the proportion and catch of jack mackerels have increased. However, the studies on their age and growth are outdated, thus data on the catch-at-age composition are lacking. The present study collected jack mackerel otolith samples from May, 2010, to April, 2011, for age determination and combined those data with length and weight data from 2005 to January, 2012, to investigate the catch-at-age of jack mackerel in the northeastern waters off Taiwan. The regression …

A Comparative Study Between Ranavirus And Megalocytivirus Infections In Orange-Spotted Grouper (Epienphelus Coioides), Jiann-Horng Leu, Ming-Hung Wu, Hsin-Yiu Chou
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Piscine iridoviruses infect a wide variety of fish and are classified into three genera: Lymphocystivirus, Ranavirus and Megalocytivirus. Lymphocystiviruses cause non-fatal, dermal infections, while ranaviruses and megalocytiviruses produce devastating, systemic infections with mortality reaching up to 100%. Although both ranaviruses and megalocytiviruses cause fatal systemic infections, they induce different pathology. In Taiwan, both ranaviruses and megalocytiviruses have caused serious epidemics in several mariculture fish species, including groupers. In this study, we infected the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) with either a megalocytivirus (TGIV, grouper iridovirus of Taiwan) or a ranavirus (GIV, grouper iridovirus), and then the two iridoviruses were investigated and …

Genetic Diversity Of Filamentous Cyanobacteria From Shore Regions Of Okinawa, Shoichiro Suda, Rui Moriya, Shinpei Sumimoto, Osamu Ohno, Kiyotake Suenaga
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Benthic marine cyanobacteria are ubiquitous oxygenic photosynthetic bacteria and they form major components of various communities, including epiphytic, epilithic and microbial mats, in coral reef environments. Filamentous groups may form almost monospecific macroscopic colonies, and sometimes make potentially harmful algal blooms (HABs). HABs bring serious problems for marine tourism but marine filamentous cyanobacteria are good resource for drug discovery. However, cultivation and identification of such filamentous cyanobacteria are difficult and there are taxonomic confusions. In this study, we investigate 17 samples from coral reef area of 10 localities in Okinawa. Macroscopic mats or cushions of filamentous cyanobacteria were collected. The …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The genus Crypthecodinium (Dinophyceae) currently consists of only one species: C. cohnii, a heterotrophic marine dinoflagellate widely known able to produce prolific amount of DHA. However, previous studies revealed that there are morphological and genetic differences among Crypthedodinium cohnii-like strains, indicating the potential of undiscovered diversity of this dinoflagellate. Attempts of isolating heterotrophic marine dinoflagellate strains were made from submerged mangrove leaves and seaweed. A total of nine strains were established, cultured and maintained using seawater-based GTY medium for taxonomic identification and phylogenetic analyses based on SSU, ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2 and LSU rDNA. Morphological observation revealed all strains shared similar …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The reproductive biology of intertidal, black brown frillfin goby, Bathygobius fuscus (Rüppell) have been surveyed from the coastal region of Keelung, Taiwan. The species always belongs to the dominant species found in the fish community of the tidal pools for different seasons. The overall fecundity of adult female is from 2335 to 13332 eggs with the average of 5605 eggs with average eggs-size is 0.34 ± 0.06 mm. The female minimum measure body-size would be 40.4 mm SL. The higher reproductive season can be well observed from female GSI (Gonadosomatic Index) during May to September. During that time, there may …

The Aru Sea off Indonesia is a major fishing ground for Taiwanese distant-water otter trawlers. The hairtail, an economically important demersal fish, is abundant in that area. The assessment methodology in this paper extends previous studies on hairtail fisheries by considering migration within the fishing grounds. This model is based on conventional Leslie-Delury method but makes different assumptions on stock movement and the relationship between stock abundance and catch per unit effort. It was applied to retrospective data from the hairtail fisheries in the Aru Sea. In addition, the depletion method was used to estimate the abundance of hairtail and …

The sandperch genus, Parapercis Bleeker, 1863 is the most diverse group of Family Pinguipedidae in the perciforms. One unusual specimen of sandperches recently collected from the Dongsha Island (Pratas Island), South China Sea from 2011 expedition belonging to Taiwan, the Republic of China is turned to a new species as Parapercis dongshaensis n. sp. closely related to the newly recorded species, Parapercis okamurai Kamohara, 1960 which also firstly collected from Taiwanese waters would been also documented herein. The new species, Parapercis dongshaensis n. sp., can be well distinguished from other congeners by the following unique combination of features: (1) fins: …

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the causative agent of a disease that has led to severe mortalities of cultured shrimp in Taiwan and many other countries. WSSV, a kind of large enveloped DNA virus, has a wide host range among crustaceans. During the first stage to infect a target cell, the enveloped virus must combine itself with the receptor on the host cell membrane via an envelope protein. In WSSV, binding of envelope protein with the receptor of the host cell membrane was revealed in a number of previous studies. WSSV envelope proteins were also considered to form a …

Bacterial growth rates were determined in natural seawater samples using two different methodological approaches: incubation in dialysis bags, and a modification of the dilution approach. Bacterial growth rates estimated for the dialysis bag varied from 0.026 h-1 (April) to 0.208 h-1 (August). Bacterial growth rates in 0.2 µm and 30 kDa size-fractionated series ranged from 0.038 to 0.094 h-1 and 0.078 to 0.42 h-1, respectively. Furthermore, in all of our samples, growth rates in the 30 kDa fractionated series (grazer and virus-free diluent) were higher than in the 0.2 µm series (grazer-free diluent) or in the dialysis bag incubations.
