One grazing and two feeding experiments were conducted to compare the feeding value of corn residue or corn grain from a genetically enhanced corn hybrid (corn rootworm-protected; event MON 863) with nontransgenic, commercially available, reference hybrids. In Exp. 1, two 13.7-ha fields, containing corn residues from either a genetically enhanced corn rootworm- protected hybrid (MON 863), or a near-isogenic, nontransgenic control hybrid (CON) were divided into four equal-sized paddocks. Grazing cattle on winter wheat, often prior to grain harvest, is common throughout the southern Great Plains. Grazing generates about $50 million in income for Texas wheat producers and reduces the risk of growing wheat by providing a substantial income source other than grain. Benefits can be realized by grazing prior to the primary environmental risk period for drought, heat stress, and hail, all of which frequently reduce grain yield while having limited impact on forage production. A two-year study was conducted at the South Dakota State University Southeast Research Farm in Beresford, SD, to determine the effects of feeding supplemental dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on the performance of mid-gestation and non-gestating, non-lactating beef cows. Ninety-six gestating beef cows (initial BW = 1276.4 ± 22.2; initial BCS = 4.7 ± 0.09) and 96 non-gestating, non-lactating beef cows (initial BW = 1214.0 ± 20.8; initial BCS = 5.4 ± 0.10) were used for year 1 and year 2, respectively. Blood samples were collected from 305 cows in the province of Şanlıurfa for determining the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum. Serum samples were analyzed for antibodies against N. caninum antigen using a commercially competitive inhibition (CI) ELISA. Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 23 of the 305 (7.5%) cow sera based on ELISA test results. With regard to seropositivity, no significant difference was observed among the origin, animal breed, and age (P > 0.05).

In this study, it was aimed to examine the urinary system and to determine normal ultrasonographic appearance by rectal ultrasonography in Holstein cows. The study material consisted of 20 bladders, 20 urethras, and 20 right and 20 left kidneys, in 20 Holstein cows. A portable ultrasonograph combined with a 6 MHz linear rectal probe (transducer) was used for the examination. Bladder lumen was determined as an anechoic structure in the ventral aspect of the rectum and its wall was hyperechoic. The distribution patterns of desmin and vimentin were determined in Zavot cattle skin using standard immunohistochemical techniques. Skin samples were collected from the different regions of the bodies. Vimentin-immunoreactivity was observed in the cells of subepidermal region, in the myoepithelial cells surrounding sebaceous and sweat glands, in the fibroblast, smooth muscle, endothelial cells of vessels and some hair follicles. Desmin-immunoreactivity was dense in the smooth muscle of arrectores pilorum muscles and bulbus pilorum of the some hair follicles. Desmin and vimentin immunoreactivities were not different among the various regions of Zavot cattle skin.

This study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and leptospirosis in aborted dairy cattle. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from 163 aborted dairy cattle that had no history of vaccination against either brucellosis or leptospirosis. The antibodies against B. abortus were detected in these serum samples as 68.1%, 65.6%, 58.9% and 55.2%, respectively by the Competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (C-ELISA), Complement Fixation Test (CFT), Rosebengal Plate Test (RBPT) and Serum Agglutination Test (SAT). In this study, the presence of Arcanobacterium spp., which causes a variety of purulent infections involving the skin, joints and visceral organs, was investigated in abscessed kidney samples of cattle. A total of 500 cattle were examined at postmortem and 100 samples with abscess were collected. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated in 40 (40%) of the samples examined. DNA extracted from the isolates were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using specific primers derived from plo gene of A. pyogenes and all the isolates were determined to be positive by PCR. Five hundred and twelve serum samples collected from randomly selected cattle of different age and sex from the towns and central villages of Hatay during April-July 2003 were tested for antibodies against 3 different Leptospira interrogans serovars (grippotyphosa, hardjo and icterohaemorrhagie) using a microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. in healthy asymptomatic cows and calves was investigated on 30 farms in Şarkışla in Sivas. The population on these farms consisted of 457 animals: 47 calves 15-45 days old, 48 calves 45-90 days old, 38 calves 90 days-6 months old, 254 calves 6 months-1 year old, 60 cattle 1-3 years old, and 10 cattle 9-15 years old. Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were identified by zinc sulphate flotation technique and modified acid fast stain methods in cattle ranging from 15 days old to adults. Environmental Factors Affecting Milk Yield And Fertility Traits Of Simmental Cows Raised At The Kazova State Farm And Phenotypic Correlations Between These Traits, Süleyman Çi̇lek, Mehmet Emi̇n Teki̇n

The aim of this study was to investigate environmental factors affecting milk yield and fertility traits of Simmental cows raised at the Kazova state farm and the phenotypic correlation between these traits from 1473 records between 1992 and 2001. The least square means of 305-days milk yield, lactation duration, dry period, service period, calving interval, gestation length and number of inseminations per conception (NIPC) were 4700 kg, 300 days, 81 days, 94 days, 379 days, 283.6 days and 1.76, respectively. The effect of calving year on milk yield and fertility traits was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The effect of calving age on gestation length and milk yield was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). The effect of calving season on gestation length, 305-days milk yield and NIPC was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). Birth type did not significantly affect any traits, except for gestation length. The phenotypic correlations between 305-days milk yield and lactation duration (0.39), between NIPC and service period (0.81), between NIPC and calving interval (0.77), between calving interval and service period (0.96) and between calving interval and gestation length (0.12) were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Correlations between milk yield and fertility traits (0.09-0.77) were statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05), except for gestation length. These results are acceptable and it can be concluded that Simmental cattle are raised successfully on this farm and under Turkish conditions.

In this study, the seroprevalence of hydatidosis was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescence antibody technique (IFAT). Manipulation of the reproductive tract results in increased levels of prostaglandin, which may, in turn, reduce pregnancy rates in embryo recipients. Administration of a prostaglandin inhibitor prior to embryo transfer improves pregnancy rates in cows. Embryo transfer into heifers is more difficult and often requires additional manipulation of the uterus. This study was designed to determine whether administration of the prostaglandin inhibitor, flunixin meglumine, immediately prior to embryo transfer increases pregnancy rates in heifers. We present estimates of heritability for carcass traits of cattle published in the scientific literature. Seventy-two papers published form 1962 to 2004, which reported estimates of heritability for carcass traits, were reviewed. The unweighted means of estimates of heritability for 14 carcass traits by slaughter end point (age, weight, and fat depth) were calculated. Among the three end points, carcass weight, backfat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and marbling score were the carcass traits with the most estimates of heritability (56≤n≤66). The averages for these traits indicate that they are similarly and moderately heritable (0.40, 0.36, 0.40, and 0.37, respectively). However, …

Effectively using the NRC (1996) beef cattle requirements model (1996 NRC) also requires knowledge of dietary degradable intake protein (DIP) and microbial efficiency. This study was conducted to determine the effects of the solar eclipse of August 11, 1999, on the behavior of birds (chickens, Pekin ducks, gulls, crows and sparrows), cattle, bees and horses. The animals were observed for 6, from 11 am to 5 pm. Abnormal and extreme behaviors were determined at the observation times. Birds, cattle, bees and horses felt the solar eclipse about 45, 20, 65 and 35 minutes before it occurred, respectively. They showed this via their behaviors. This study was carried out in Ankara province, Turkey, between September 1996 and August 1998. During the study 1208 sheep, 1001 goats and 1059 cattle were examined for Haemaphysalis ticks. These examinations revealed that 380 (37.96%) goats, 346 (28.64%) sheep and 203 (19.16%) cattle had Haemaphysalis infestation. In total, 5254 Haemaphysalis ticks were collected from these animals. They were identified as H. parva, H. sulcata, H. punctata and Haemaphysalis nymphs. Lungs from 8222 cattle slaughtered at an abattoir in Elazığ were examined macroscopically, and pneumonia was detected in 500 (6.1%) lungs. These samples were inoculated onto blood agar supplemented with 7% sheep blood for isolation of bacterial agents. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based upon the use of species-specific primers was carried out on DNA samples extracted from suspected Pasteurella spp. isolates. The present study was designed to evaluate serum biochemical and haematological parameters and serum nitrate concentrations in cattle suffering from foot- and -mouth disease (FMD). The objective was to evaluate associations of leptin genotype with fat and muscle traits in cattle. A single nucleotide polymorphism located in exon 2 of the leptin gene in cattle codes for an amino acid change from arginine (R) to cysteine (C). Genotypes for the polymorphism were determined on 492 crossbred calves by AciI digestion of amplified PCR product (C allele: 130bp; R allele: 73bp and 57bp). Data were analyzed by least-squares, accounting for effects of genotype, sex, year, location, breed-type, and calf sire. Three trials were conducted to determine the effects of previous winter gain (Trials 1 and 3) and age of calf (Trials 1 and 2) on response to undegradable intake protein (UIP) supplementation during summer grazing. In Trial 1, 48 spring-born steers (243 kg) were used in a 4 &#;&#;2 factorial arrangement. Steers were wintered at four rates of gain: 0.65 (FAST), 0.24 (SLOW), 0.38 (S/F), and 0.38 (F/S) kg/d. Three experiments were conducted to compare the feeding value of genetically enhanced corn (Roundup Ready corn events GA21 and nk603) with nontransgenic hybrids. The four treatments included two separate reference hybrids (REF), the near-isogenic control hybrid (CON), and the genetically enhanced corn (RR), resulting in two preplanned comparisons of CON vs. RR and RR vs. the average of REF. The overall purpose of StockGuard is to highlight threats to the animal industries before they occur and to develop effective ways to minimise the potential impact of these threats.
