Digestibility And Nutrients Of Whole Corn Plant, Gavin Harsh, Jana L. Gramkow, Robert G. Bondurant, Shelby E. Gardine, Andrea K. Watson, Terry J. Klopfenstein

UCARE: Research Products

In 2013, Nebraska planted roughly nine million acres of corn, the third most in the United States and continues to grow. Therefore, beef production resources have become scarce and relatively expensive. The diminished pasture forages available for grazing cattle has ignited the importance and need for alternative uses. Nebraska has a strong advantage over several other states, as there is an abundant supply of corn residue to compensate for these shortages. The research conducted shows the differences in the amount of residue produced and digestibility of each plant part per treatment.

Objective: 1.) Determine if the amount of residue to …

We report here the ~670 Mb genome assembly of the Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), a tropical marine teleost. We used long-read sequencing augmented by transcriptomics, optical and genetic mapping along with shared synteny from closely related fish species to derive a chromosome-level assembly with a contig N50 size over 1 Mb and scaffold N50 size over 25 Mb that span ~90% of the genome. The population structure of L. calcarifer species complex was analyzed by re-sequencing 61 individuals representing various regions across the species’ native range. SNP analyses identified high levels of genetic diversity and confirmed earlier indications …

Bioeconomic Evaluation Of The Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus Monodon) Industry In Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam, Hieu Truong Khac, Hong Hue Tran Thi Phuong, Cheng Ting Huang, Sha Miao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Analysis of costs and returns for the tiger shrimp farming industry in Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam was carried out by considering different production scales. The production scale influenced not only the cost but also the profitability. Through the results of multivariate statistical analyses, this study showed that the production cost, benefit and earning capacity varied from extensive to semi-intensive and finally to intensive systems. By means of Cobb-Douglas production function analysis, it is revealed that net revenue from increasing the production scale would increase if the input intensities of the fixed, seed and feed costs rose. More investment should be …

The monosaccharide composition was assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography. The structures of the algal polysaccharide were studied using Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy. The fucoidan content extracted using method I was 13.13% (of dry weight), 24.00%, and 22.67% from Sargassum glaucescens, Sargassum …

Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 2-Alpha Participates In The Regulation Of Intersegmental Vessels Angiogenesis And Neuromast Deposition, Chi-Fu Chou, Han-Jia Lin, Chih-Yu Tsai, Tzung-Yi Lin, Hsin-Yu Chung, Chia-Yin Chiang, Chung-Hao Li, Tun-Wen Pai, Chin-Hwa Hu, Wen-Shyong Tzou Apr 2016

Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 2-Alpha Participates In The Regulation Of Intersegmental Vessels Angiogenesis And Neuromast Deposition, Chi-Fu Chou, Han-Jia Lin, Chih-Yu Tsai, Tzung-Yi Lin, Hsin-Yu Chung, Chia-Yin Chiang, Chung-Hao Li, Tun-Wen Pai, Chin-Hwa Hu, Wen-Shyong Tzou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Subtle morphogenesis begins during trunk development after the segmentation period in zebrafish. Sprouting angiogenesis forms the trunk vascular system after the extension of the dorsal aorta and cardinal veins. The posterior lateral line primordium migrates from head to tail, forming the sensory organs on the skin. It is still unclear whether this morphogenesis requires several master regulators to control the ongoing process. Hypoxia-inducible factor 2-alpha (Hif2-alpha) plays an essential role in the maturation of both central neural system and digestive system during embryogenesis. We hypothesized that Hif2-alpha also regulates trunk development. Through loss-of-function experiments, we found that Hif2- alpha, but …

Length-Based Estimates Of Growth And Natural Mortality For Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans) In The Northwest Pacific Ocean, Nan-Jay Su, Chi-Lu Sun, Chuan-Yuan Tai, Su-Zan Yeh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Blue marlin is an important resource for commercial and recreational fisheries. However, several life history parameters needed for stock assessments of this species are poorly determined. Sex-specific catch-at-size data (eye fork length, EFL) for blue marlin were collected from the Taiwanese offshore longline fishery in the northwest Pacific Ocean, and analyzed using the MULTIFAN, a length-frequency analysis, to derive growth parameters. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of blue marlin were estimated to be different between sexes. The best model for the females included 11 age-classes in the lengthfrequency data sets (asymptotic length L = 312.5 cm EFL, growth coefficient k …

Multi-Generational Effect Of Western Diet On Colorectal Cancer And Impact Of Green Tea On Cancer Prevention, Sumira Phatak, Canyon Neal, Kevin Contreras, Tess Armbrust, Daphne Rodriguez, Braden Abercrombie, Katie Pontsler, Deanna Larson, Ashli Hunter, Hector Esquer, Jocelyn Cuthbert, Michael Lefevre, Korry Hintze, Robert Ward, Abby Benninghoff Apr 2016

Multi-Generational Effect Of Western Diet On Colorectal Cancer And Impact Of Green Tea On Cancer Prevention, Sumira Phatak, Canyon Neal, Kevin Contreras, Tess Armbrust, Daphne Rodriguez, Braden Abercrombie, Katie Pontsler, Deanna Larson, Ashli Hunter, Hector Esquer, Jocelyn Cuthbert, Michael Lefevre, Korry Hintze, Robert Ward, Abby Benninghoff

Student Research Symposium

Diet is widely recognized as an important factor in lifetime cancer risk, yet Americans routinely consume foods that are energy-dense and nutrient-poor. Animal model studies to identify functional foods for cancer prevention generally do not account for typical Western dietary patterns with respect to macro- and micronutrient content. The primary objectives of this study were to determine the impact of ancestral and multi-generational consumption of a Western-style diet in a murine model of inflammation-associated colorectal carcinogenesis. Additionally, we sought to determine the efficacy of green tea for prevention of Western diet-enhanced colon tumorigenesis. Previously, our group developed the Total Western …
