This study was conducted in 2 different climatic zones of Punjab Province of Pakistan, the Sahiwal and Bahawalpur divisions, simultaneously for the period of 1 year divided into seasons. Seven adult Nili-Ravi buffalo breeding bulls from each division were used. Dimensional characteristics of spermatozoa were determined. Season had a nonsignificant effect on the sperm head length in both divisions and a nonsignificant difference was also observed between bulls of the Sahiwal and Bahawalpur divisions. The buffalo bulls of both divisions exhibited significantly increased sperm head breadth in autumn, whereas a nonsignificant difference was observed between divisions. Sperm head shape values …

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of locking compression plates for the treatment of distal metacarpal fractures in calves. The metacarpus was stabilized using a stainless steel locking compression plate with fully threaded locking head screws. The calves started weight-bearing partially after the first postoperative day and resumed complete weight-bearing after day 10. Callus formation was obtained at the end of the 3rd week and completed at the end of the 8th week, and complete healing was seen at the 12th week in radiographs. The activity of enzymes that digest carbohydrates at various points in the gastrointestinal tract of sheep was examined. In addition, weight and contents of digestive tract segments were examined. The experiment was performed on six adult ewes fed an 85% hay diet. The morphometric measurements revealed that the alimentary tract constituted 32% of the sheep's body mass and wet rumen contents constituted 70% of wet mass of the total digestive tract content. The protozoal population in the rumen varied from 37.2 × 104 to 54.0 × 104/mL rumen fluid. In the examined samples, ciliates were identified as belonging to the …

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of seasonal variations on the occurrence of total aflatoxin (AFTotal), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), and total fumonisin (Ftotal) in the commercially mixed ruminant feed obtained from feed mills located in Ankara, Kırıkkale, Çankırı, Çorum, and Kırşehir provinces using the enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) method. The efficacy of diets containing 40%-50% wheat, barley, or oat grains, fermented by a solid-state fermentation process, on bird performance, carcass yield, digestive organ development, and intestinal viscosity was tested. Compared with broiler chicks fed unfermented grains, those fed fermented oats had increased feed intake, and treatment with fermented wheat and barley improved the feed conversion ratio at days 21 and 42. Treatment with fermented barley and oats resulted in increased body weight at day 42. Treatment with fermented wheat and oats increased the percentage of carcass yield. Campylobacter jejuni, a zoonotic bacterial pathogen with worldwide distribution, infects about 400 million humans in the world annually. In order to reduce C. Jejuni colonization in the gastrointestinal tracts of broilers and make chickens less susceptible to colonization, four commercial products based on organic acid, probiotics, and medicinal plants were used. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of a combination of plant supplements with antioxidant properties on the total antioxidant status measured by FRAP and the activity of selected antioxidant enzymes in the livers of Japanese quails. Both A and B grade cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) aspirated from cattle ovaries at slaughter were matured in vitro under normal (38.5 °C) and elevated temperatures (41 °C). Maturation competence based on cumulus expansion, COC diameter, and nuclear maturation were compared with and without antioxidant supplementation incorporating 7.5 µM retinol, 1 nM melatonin, and 1.5 µg/mL zinc chloride in an oocyte maturation medium. Heat stress significantly reduced cumulus expansion by approximately 20%, while only retinol could bring a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase. Remote tropical oceanic islands are of high conservation priority, and they are exemplified by range-restricted species with small global populations. Spatial and temporal patterns in rainfall and plant productivity may be important in driving dynamics of these species. Yet, little is known about environmental influences on population dynamics for most islands and species. Only humans can report feeling pain. In contrast, pain in animals is typically inferred on the basis of nonverbal behaviour. Unfortunately, these behavioural data can be problematic when the reliability and validity of the behavioural tests are questionable. The thesis proposed here is based on the bioengineering principle that structure determines function. Basic functional homologies can be mapped to structural homologies across a broad spectrum of vertebrate species. For example, olfaction depends on olfactory glomeruli in the olfactory bulbs of the forebrain, visual orientation responses depend on the laminated optic tectum in the midbrain, and locomotion depends on pattern generators …

I present a little-known example of flexible, opportunistic behavior by a species of fish to undermine Key’s (2016) thesis that fish are unconscious and unable to feel. Lack of a cortex is flimsy grounds for denying pain to fish, for on that criterion we must also then deny it to all non-mammals, including birds, which goes against scientific consensus. Notwithstanding science’s fundamental inability to prove anything, the precautionary principal dictates that we should give the benefit of the doubt to fish, and the state of the oceans dictates that we act on it now.

Debate about the possibility of fish pain focuses largely on the fish’s lack of the cortex considered necessary for generating pain. That view is appealing because it avoids relatively abstract debate about the nature of pain experience and subjectivity. Unfortunately, however, that debate cannot be entirely avoided. Subcortical circuits in the fish might support an immediate, raw, “pain” experience. The necessity of the cortex only becomes obvious when considering pain as an explicitly felt subjective experience. Attributing pain to fish only seems absurd when pain is considered as a state of explicit knowing.

An examination was conducted on caryophyllaeid cestode fauna of Squalius cephalus obtained from Serban Dam Lake in Turkey between February 2009 and August 2010. At the end of the study, from the 114 S. Cephalus examined, 14 host fish specimens were infected with 75 Caryophyllaeus brachycollis (prevalence 12.3% and mean parasite intensity 5.3 ± 10.0 parasites/fish) and one host fish specimen was infected with 65 Biacetabulum appendiculatum (prevalence 0.9%, 65 parasites). This survey was conducted to investigate the occurrence of the family Proctotrupidae in Iran. The specimens were collected using Malaise traps from northern Iran during 2010 and 2011. The family Proctotrupidae (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupoidea) is recorded from Iran for the first time. Five species belonging to four genera were identified: Proctotrupes gravidator (Linnaeus, 1758); P. Brachypterus (Schrank, 1780); Cryptoserphus aculeator (Haliday, 1839); Disogmus obsoletus Brues, 1905; and Mischoserphus arcuator (Stelfox, 1950). All genera and species are new records for the fauna of Iran. An identification key for the genera of Proctotrupidae is provided.

This present contribution is based upon the ichneumonids collected from the northeastern Anatolian part of Turkey in 2014. A total of 57 species belonging to subfamilies Acaenitinae, Anomaloninae, Banchinae, Campopleginae, Cremastinae, Cryptinae, Diplazontinae, Ichneumoninae, Metopiinae, Orthocentrinae, Oxytorinae, Pimplinae, and Tryphoninae have been recorded. Here we confirm the species' expansion and establishment in a complex of 4 lakes located outside of its currently known distribution range and provide, for the first time, some of its biological features. There are twelve Microtus species in Turkey and two of them are endemic to the steppic central Anatolian plateau. In this study, previously collected specimens that were recorded as Microtus irani from southeastern Turkey were reevaluated by karyologically comparing different species distributed throughout southeastern Turkey. The taxonomic status of this species was raised to a new species, Microtus elbeyli sp. Nov., which has dark ochreous dorsal color, agrestis morphotype in M2, and 2n = 46, NF = 50, Nfa = 46 karyotype. There have been few ecological studies of dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from the Black Sea Region of Turkey. In the RAMSAR-listed wetland system of the Kızılırmak Delta of Turkey's central Black Sea coast, seasonal grazing by domesticated water buffalo produces plentiful dung from April to November. Twenty-three species of dung beetles from 13 genera of Aphodiinae and 4 genera of Scarabaeinae were collected from their dung on two adjacent soil types in 2013. An Update Note On Diversity And Conservation Of The Endemic Fishes In Iranian Inland Waters, Azad Teimori, Hossein Mostafavi, Hamid Reza Esmaeili

The diversity, distribution pattern, and conservation status of endemic species were obtained by analysis of catalogued specimens collected by fieldwork carried out by the authors at various times in different regions in Iran since 2002. The Iranian endemic ichthyofauna includes 51 species and forms a significant part of the total species known from this country, so that new endemic species are being described almost every year. The highest endemicity is found in the Tigris-Karoun basin in the west, followed by the Kor River and the Persian Gulf basins in the south. A New Record Of The Genus Camerotrombidium Thor, 1936(Acari: Microtrombidiidae) From Turkey, İbrahi̇m Karakurt, Sevgi̇ Sevsay

A newly recorded species for the Turkish fauna, Camerotrombidium rasum Berlese, 1910, is given based on adult females and larvae obtained from an adult female by experimental rearing in the laboratory. The genus Camerotrombidium is recorded for the first time from Turkey.

New Records Of Springtails (Collembola: Entomobryomorpha)And Oribatid Mites (Acari: Oribatida) In Georgia, Shalva Barjadze, Maka Murvanidze

Four species of springtails and four species of oribatid mites were identified as new records for the Georgian fauna from different regions of the country: Coecobrya tenebricosa (Folsom, 1902); Entomobrya muscorum (Nicolet, 1842) Rondani, 1861; Heteromurus major (Moniez, 1889); Pseudosinella octopunctata Börner, 1901; Austrocarabodes ensifer (Sellnick, 1931); Jacotella frondeus (Kulijev, 1969); Lasiobelba pori (Vasiliu and Ivan, 1995); and Bipassalozetes sabulosus (Shtanchaeva, 1986). Moreover, L. Pori is the first record for the Caucasian fauna. With these new records, the number of springtail species known from Georgia increases to 97 and the number of oribatid mite species in Georgia exceeds 530.

Redescription And Identity Of Taphinella Bengalensis Jacoby, 1900(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae), Jan Bezdek

The primary type specimens of Taphinella bengalensis Jacoby, 1900 (type species of Taphinellina Maulik, 1936) were examined. The genus Taphinellina is excluded from synonymy with Charaea Baly, 1878 and newly synonymized with Cassena Weise, 1892. Taphinella bengalensis is transferred to Cassena and redescribed, and its lectotype is designated. Color photos of its habitus and drawings of both male and female genitalia are presented.

New Distributional Record Of Chelonibia Testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) From The Island Of Gökçeada, Northern Aegean Sea, Turkey, Onur Gönülal

A total of 420 specimens of Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) were found on two dead loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) washed ashore on the island of Gökçeada (northern Aegean Sea). The species is reported for the first time from the Turkish coast of the Aegean Sea and is the second record since 1982 for the Turkish Seas.

A New Locality Record For Phoenicolacerta Laevis (Gray, 1838)(Squamata: Lacertidae) In Western Anatolia, Çeti̇n Ilgaz, Yusuf Kumlutaş, Kami̇l Candan

During fieldwork in western Anatolia 4 specimens (1 adult male, 2 subadult males, and 1 subadult female) of Phoenicolacerta laevis from Dalaman, Muğla Province, were collected in November 2014. The results including meristic pholidolial characteristics, metric measurements, and color-pattern features of specimens are compared with the data given in the previous literature. The occurrence of P. Laevis in southern and western Anatolia is discussed.
