Sdsu Calf Value Discovery 2013/2014 Summary Report, J.A. Walker, W.C. Rusche
Sdsu Calf Value Discovery 2013/2014 Summary Report, J.A. Walker, W.C. Rusche
South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
The Calf Value Discovery Program (CVD) allows cow‐calf producers to gain knowledge of the finishing segment of the beef cattle industry and the marketing of fed cattle. Specifically, CVD provides an opportunity for cow‐calf producers to learn how their calves perform in a feedlot and their carcass value when sold in a value‐based marketing system. Each producer taking part in the program could consign 5 or more steers weighing between 500 and 800 pounds to the CVD program. Animals were finished at VanderWal Yards (Bruce, SD) in a calf‐fed program using typical diets and management protocols. Carcass and feedlot performance …

A Six Year Summary Of Feedlot Health Records From The Opportunities Farm, H. Carroll, R. Mcdaniel, M. Lowe
South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
Livestock housing at the Opportunities Farm is comprised of three different cattle feeding pen designs. The three pen designs are a monoslope barn (MON), open pens (OPN), and open pens with shelter over the feeding area (OS). Analyses of 6 years of data ranging from 2008 through 2013 were conducted. Morbidity and mortality rates for each year were compared for all cattle fed during the six year interval, regardless of feeding facility design. Cattle fed at the Opportunities Farm during this period had morbidity and mortality rates equivalent to what would be expected by feedlots throughout North America. Morbidity significantly …

Investigating The Filled Gel Model In Cheddar Cheese Through Use Of Sephadex Beads, L. M. Barden, J. A. Osborne, Donald J. Mcmahon, E. A. Foegeding
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Cheese can be modeled as a filled gel whereby milkfat globules are dispersed in a casein gel network. We determined the filler effects using Sephadex beads (GE Healthcare Life Sciences, Pittsburgh, PA) as a model filler particle. Ideally, such a model could be used to test novel filler particles to replace milkfat in low-fat cheese. Low-filler (6% particles), reduced-filler (16%), and full-filler (33%) cheeses were produced using either Sephadex beads of varying sizes (20 to 150 μm diameter) or milkfat. Small- and large-strain rheological tests were run on each treatment at 8, 12, and 18 wk after cheese manufacturing. Differences …

Effectiveness Of High Inclusion Liquid Feed For Finishing Steers, R.H. Pritchard, A.R. Taylor, H. Blalock
South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
A finishing phase study was conducted to measure the effectiveness of replacing dry rolled corn with a high inclusion liquid feed for finishing steers. Treatments were based upon 3 supplements: 1) Control 3.3% inclusion meal-type supplement (CO); 2) Typical Liquid Supplement 4.5% inclusion liquid supplement (TLS); and 3) High Liquid Supplement 9.0% inclusion liquid supplement (HLS). Supplements displaced dry rolled corn in finishing diets. Five 5 pens of 7 or 8 yearling steers with an initial BW of 930 lb assigned to each treatment for the 119 d experiment. The assayed supplement inclusion averaged 3.35%, 4.48% and 8.97% for the …
Postruminal Flow Of Glutamate Linearly Increases Small Intestinal Starch Digestion In Cattle, E.J. Blom, D.W. Brake, D.E. Anderson
Postruminal Flow Of Glutamate Linearly Increases Small Intestinal Starch Digestion In Cattle, E.J. Blom, D.W. Brake, D.E. Anderson
South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
Improving performance and efficiency among cattle fed corn-based diets could have large benefit to cattle production in the United States. Starch escaping ruminal fermentation is not efficiently digested in the small intestine; however, postruminal flows of casein (i.e., milk protein) or glutamate (an amino acid or building block of protein) increase small intestinal starch digestion in cattle. The objective of this study was to determine responses of small intestinal starch digestion in cattle to increasing amounts of postruminal glutamate. Increasing amounts of duodenal glutamate linearly increased small intestinal and postruminal starch digestion. These data indicate that postruminal glutamate can provide …
Effect Of Processing Conditions On Nutrient Disappearance Of Cold-Pressed And Hexane-Extracted Camelina And Carinata Meals In Vitro, A. Sackey, E.E. Grings, D.W. Brake, K. Muthukumarappan
Effect Of Processing Conditions On Nutrient Disappearance Of Cold-Pressed And Hexane-Extracted Camelina And Carinata Meals In Vitro, A. Sackey, E.E. Grings, D.W. Brake, K. Muthukumarappan
South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
Camelina and carinata are oilseed crops that have recently gained increasing attention as biofuel sources. The meals remaining after oil extraction contain relatively high concentration of protein and, because of this, there is interest in using them in livestock diets. However, the nutritional qualities of these meals are not well defined and may vary with processing conditions. In our experiment, we evaluated meals from cold-pressed and solvent-extracted camelina and carinata meals manufactured using 6 different processing conditions. Estimates of total in vitro OM and CP disappearance of each meal were determined according to a modified 2-phase procedure of Tilley and …

Comparison Of Camelina Meal And Distiller’S Dried Grains With Solubles In Diet Of Beef Replacement Heifers, E.E. Grings, A. Sackey, D.W. Brake, G.A. Perry
South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
Biofuel production from different crops yields by-product meals that are available for use as protein sources for ruminant livestock. Variation in nutrient composition among meals may result in different inclusion rates to meet nutrient needs of livestock. In this study we compared distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a by-product of ethanol production, and camelina meal, a by-product of biodiesel production, as a protein source in hay-based diets for beef heifers before breeding. Diets were formulated to be similar in energy and protein content by altering the amount of protein source and corn in the diet. Heifers fed the two …

Estimation Of Breed-Specific Heterosis Effects For Birth, Weaning, And Yearling Weight In Cattle, Lauren N. Schiermiester, R. M. Thallman, Larry Kuehn, Stephen D. Kachman, Matthew L. Spangler
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Heterosis, assumed proportional to expected breed heterozygosity, was calculated for 6834 individuals with birth, weaning and yearling weight records from Cycle VII and advanced generations of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) project. Breeds represented in these data included: Angus, Hereford, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Simmental, Limousin and Composite MARC III. Heterosis was further estimated by proportions of British × British (B × B), British × Continental (B × C) and Continental × Continental (C × C) crosses and by breed-specific combinations. Model 1 fitted fixed covariates for heterosis within biological types while Model 2 fitted …
Single-Unit Turbines And Bat Mortality In Arkansas, Phillip Nathaniel Jordan
Single-Unit Turbines And Bat Mortality In Arkansas, Phillip Nathaniel Jordan
Student Theses and Dissertations
Wind power has become a substantial investment in the United States energy portfolio. It is approximated that by the year 2030, 30% of the world's energy will be produced by wind. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 bats are killed in the United States every year by wind turbines. Using Anabat SD2, mist netting, fatalities searches, and two automatic-acoustic identifiers, I investigated six single-single unit turbines and their effects on bats in two ecoregions of Arkansas during the summers of 2012 and 2013. Netting effort totaled 30 nights with 94 bats captured during that time. I performed a combined 142 fatality …

A Comparison Of Survey Methods For Documenting Presence Of Myotis Leibii (Eastern Small-Footed Bats) At Roosting Areas In Western Virginia, John K. Huth, Alexander Silvis, Paul R. Moosman Jr., W. Mark Ford, Sara Sweeten
Virginia Journal of Science
Many aspects of foraging and roosting habitat of Myotis leibii (Eastern Small-Footed Bat), an emergent rock roosting-obligate, are poorly described. Previous comparisons of effectiveness of acoustic sampling and mist-net captures have not included Eastern Small-Footed Bat. Habitat requirements of this species differ from congeners in the region, and it is unclear whether survey protocols developed for other species are applicable. Using data from three overlapping studies at two sampling sites in western Virginia’s central Appalachian Mountains, detection probabilities were examined for three survey methods (acoustic surveys with automated identification of calls, visual searches of rock crevices, and mist-netting) for use …

Analysis Of Standard Dna Procedures On Feathers Of Late 19th To Late 20th Century Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus), Alia A. Hamdan, Catherine B. Viverette, Rodney J. Dyer
Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium
Species with well-documented demographic histories and well known perturbations to gene flow provide good models for understanding how historic events impact contemporary population genetic structure1,2. Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), a marine bird-of-prey, experienced steep declines after widespread organochloride pesticide (e.g. DDT) use in the mid-twentieth century 3, however, population genetic consequences remain unknown. Use of historic specimens can aid population genetic studies4,5, however, these samples can degrade over time impacting quantity and quality of extracted DNA5. We compared the concentrations of extracted DNA of Osprey feathers from museum and research collections to those of contemporary samples collected according to standard field …

In general, scientific research has publication of data as the end goal. The process and experience, which are of great importance in art disciplines, is not necessarily represented or valued. However, science has an inherent element of art to it, which deserves to be shown. I have been studying Prothonotary Warblers with a team from the VCU Biology Department to learn how I can reinterpret the research in a way that bridges the gap between the experience and typical scientific products. The research team measured spatial and temporal variation in warbler prey abundance (caterpillars and mayflies) and assessed …

South Dakota Beef Report, 2015
The nutritional management of replacement females from weaning to breeding is critical to lifetime productivity. Traditionally, cereal grains have been used to develop replacement heifers to attain puberty and enter the breeding system at a younger age. However, overfeeding heifers decreases number of calves weaned, while peri-pubertal caloric restriction increased primordial follicle numbers in the developing ovary. The number of primordial follicles a female has can determine her overall fertility; females with a greater amount of follicles have greater reproductive lifespans. In this study, two groups of heifers were developed to prebreeding status. One group received a control diet (228 …

Changes In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Startle Responses Due To Stressors Related To Marine Bycatch, Margot Wilsterman
Changes In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Startle Responses Due To Stressors Related To Marine Bycatch, Margot Wilsterman
Biology Honors Papers
Marine bycatch is one of the most pressing issues that result from modern industrialized fishing. Scientists do not have good estimates of rates of cryptic mortality, which is the mortality of individuals that are not landed but die from interactions with fishing gear below the water surface. One of the main causes of cryptic mortality is depredation, which occurs after individuals have escaped through fishing equipment and are eaten by predators waiting close behind for an effortless meal. In this study the effects of scale loss, slime loss, and exhaustion on the startle response of zebrafish were examined. These stressors …
