The monomorphism of newly hatched chicks is a major hurdle for poultry farmers at the time of sexing. The traditional sexing techniques are inaccurate and time-consuming. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based sex determination method to obtain a higher separation accuracy rate as compared to conventional methods. LAMP is a simple, quick, and relatively inexpensive diagnostic tool. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples of Leghorn and Korean native chicks for LAMP. The patellar reflex was used in this study to determine the site of thoracolumbar spinal cord dysfunction (T3-L3 or L4-L6) as a result of disc herniation. The results of neurological examinations were compared with the findings of CT myelography. This study was conducted on 21 dogs, selected from a total of 26 dogs confirmed to have a single thoracolumbar lesion. Results revealed that the accuracy of the patellar reflex for lesion localization was 71.4%. The aim of the study was to compare the frequencies of hoof conformation faults and disorders in the front and hind legs of horses of different breeds. The study was conducted on 346 horses over 3 years old (167 Anglo-Arabians, 130 Hucul horses, and 49 Silesian horses). In the study population, over 60% of the horses had some kind of hoof conformation faults and disorders. A significant difference in the incidence of hoof conformation faults (65.5%) and hoof disorders (35.5%) was shown in the analyzed population of horses. Concentration activity levels of selected radionuclides in skulls of European badger from eastern Poland were determined. It was found that studied skull bones contained on average 1.6 ± 1.7 Bq kg-1 of 137Cs (range: 0-6.4 Bq kg-1), 2.2 ± 0.87 Bq kg-1 of 90Sr (range: 0.93-3.9 Bq kg-1), and 8.4 ± 4.1 Bq kg-1 of 239+240Pu (range: 0-53 Bq kg-1). These values prove to be rather low in comparison with earlier literature data on anthropogenic radionuclides (being a result of the Chernobyl fallout) present in skulls of other mammals. Analysis Of Acid?Base Disorders In Calves With Lactic Acidosis Using Aclassic Model And Strong Ion Approach, Michal Bednarski, Robert Kupczynski

The objective of this study was to analyze the disorders of acid-base balance in calves with lactic acidosis using the classic model and the strong ion approach. The study included 40 calves: group I was the control group (n = 20) and group II consisted of calves with diarrhea and lactic acidosis (n = 20). The highest lactate concentration (5.49 ± 2.58 mmol/L) was documented in diarrheic calves. The diarrheic calves presented with significantly lower pH, pCO2, and concentrations of HCO3- (P < 0.01), and with higher anion gap (AG), strong ion difference (SID3, SID7), and strong ion gap (SIG) (P < 0.01) than the controls. In the group of diarrheic calves lactic acid correlated with AG (r = 0.684, P < 0.01), SID3 (r = 0.718, P < 0.01), SID7 (r = 0.494, P = 0.03), and SIG (r = 0.561, P = 0.01). There was a negative correlation between lactate and effective SID (SIDEff) (r = -0.499, P = 0.02), and total plasma concentration of nonvolatile buffers (ATot ) (r = -0.361, P = 0.04). The results indicated that in lactic acidosis there were specific disturbances with an increased concentration of unmeasured strong ions.

In this study, the cardiac effects of anemia and venous thromboembolism (VTE), reportedly caused by the hemolyzed erythrocytes occurring in sheep with babesiosis, were investigated using cardiac markers and D-dimer (DD). This study was undertaken to measure the effect of fattening duration (60, 80, and 100 days) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of male kids from indigenous Hair and Honamlı goat breeds reared under intensive fattening systems in Turkey. Fattening duration had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on the fattening performance and a number of carcass characteristics of kids. An interaction was detected between genotype and fattening duration for average daily gain (ADG). Hair goat kids grew at a faster rate than Honamlı kids in the 20-40 day and 40-60 day fattening periods, but they maintained relatively similar ADGs within other fattening periods. On average, over the course of the fattening trial, Honamlı kids grew at an average daily rate of 209 g/head, while Hair goat kids grew at a daily rate of 231 g/head. Dressing percentage and carcass lean and fat percentages of kids increased (P < 0.05-0.001) with slaughter age and weight for both genotypes, whereas the percentage of bone decreased (P < 0.001) with each successive fattening period. No genotypic differences were detected for a number of carcass characteristics at the time of slaughter, with the exception of relatively higher (P < 0.01) fat deposit rates within the kidney and pelvic areas for Hair kids.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major etiological agent of bovine mastitis worldwide. In this study, 37 strains of S. Aureus resistant to penicillin were isolated from bovine mastitis cases in Gansu Province for investigating blaZ and virulence-related genes, including tst, eta, etb, lukPV, lukED, lukM, hla, hlb, hld, and edin. Antibiotic resistance was based on disk diffusion method and blaZ and virulence-associated genes were studied by polymerase chain reaction. A 70-day starvation was conducted to determine the effects of long-term starvation on whole-body polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition and fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression in the liver of zebrafish, Danio rerio. The starvation period was followed by a 15-day refeeding period to test recovery of both PUFA composition and gene expression levels. It was found that n-3 PUFA and arachidonic acid levels increased during starvation and returned to normal values after refeeding (P < 0.05). Expression of seven (elovl5, fads2, cpt1-β, acox1, acadvl, fabp1a, and fabp7a) of eight total genes downregulated significantly towards the end of the starvation. As a result of refeeding, gene expression of elovl5 and ppar-α returned to the normal levels. Therefore, it was concluded that, in general, mRNA expression of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism was negatively influenced by long-term starvation (70 days); there was no direct relationship between whole-body fatty acid composition and hepatic gene expressions; and 15-day refeeding was insufficient for recovery of starvation-based metabolic losses in zebrafish.

Pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and PK/PD ratios of a new solvate of enrofloxacin (enrofloxacin hydrochloride-dihydrate; enro-C), were studied in hamsters. Enrofloxacin from Baytril1397904493 5% (enroR) served as the reference preparation. Two groups of 60 Syrian golden hamsters were intramuscularly injected individually with 10 mg/kg of enroR or with enro-C. Tissue and serum samples were obtained for 72 h; enrofloxacin concentrations were determined by HPLC with UV detection. Ninety percent minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC90) were determined for strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Leptospira interrogans, and Escherichia coli. All PK variables were statistically different between groups (P < 0.01). CMAX of enrofloxacin for enro-C was 17.3 μg/mL and it was 2.6 μg/mL for enroR. AUC was considerably higher for enro-C (459.2 μg/mL h vs. 19.9 μg/mL h). There were no statistically significant differences in MIC90 values between enroR and enro-C. Tissue concentrations of enro-C in all cases were higher and remained above the MIC for longer periods than those of enroR. The nutritive values of almond hulls (Ahs), alfalfa (ALF), and sugar beet pulp (SBP) were determined using the in situ nylon bag technique. The ruminal dry matter (DM) degradation kinetics of 4 varieties of Ahs were compared with ALF and SBP. The almond varieties tested were Rabbi (RAB), Mamaii (MAM), Shahrud 15 (SH15), and Shokufe (SH). The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for subclinical heifer mastitis and to create a model that can predict the prevalence of subclinical mastitis of pregnant heifers in farms in Turkey. Lacteal secretion samples were taken from 439 pregnant (6-9 months) heifers and bacteriological analyses were performed. In this study, 37.47% of the samples were determined to be infected. In lacteal secretion samples, the isolation rate of coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus was 44.83% and 35.71%, respectively. This study aimed to determine the levels of homocysteine and cardiac markers in cows with hypocalcemia. This research was conducted with a total of 20 cows, including 10 with hypocalcemia and 10 healthy controls. Hypocalcemia was diagnosed by determining low blood calcium (Ca) levels, and a standard hypocalcemia treatment was initiated in those cows with the disease. In order to find alternative feed additives to replace antibiotics for safe animal production, combinations of probiotics, oligosaccharides, and berberine were used in this study. Ninety 60-day-old pigs were assigned to 9 groups, with 10 pigs for each group. Group 1 was the control, group 2 had antibiotics added, and groups 3-9 had different levels of combinations added.
