Shipments of cargo and household goods have been identified as pathways for brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis) transport from Guam to other locations. We analyzed data regarding shipments of military household goods leaving Guam during 2006 to 2009 to identify the potential for human transport of brown treesnakes to the United States by determining when shipments most commonly occur and identifying primary receiving areas. We found that the number of shipments was highest during the months of May and June and that California receives more shipments (23% of total shipments) than any other location. Identifying species responsible for crop damage is an important first step in developing management strategies. Previous studies have surveyed bird species flying through cherry orchards but have not documented which species were consuming cherries. We conducted traditional surveys and behavioral observations in orchards of sweet cherries (Prunus avium) and tart cherries (Prunus cerasus) in Michigan during 2010 to compare results from the 2 techniques. American robins (Turdus migratorius) were detected most frequently during sweet cherry surveys, while behavioral observations showed that cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) consumed more sweet cherries than did robins. …

Grass management has been used for many years at airports in an attempt to reduce numbers of birds and other wildlife and the collisions with aircraft associated with them. We evaluated the impacts of grassland alteration by mowing and fi re on the abundance, diversity, and frequency of birds using 1 control and 2 experimental grass plots from 2009 to 2010 on a U.S. Army airfield in Colorado located in short-grass prairie. Mixed-Breed Guarding Dogs Reduce Conflict Between Goat Herders And Native Carnivores In Patagonia, Alejandro González, Andrés Novaro, Martín Funes, Oscar Pailacura, María Jose Bolgeri, Susan Walker

Goat husbandry is the main rural livelihood in the northern Patagonian steppe of Argentina, and herders kill any carnivore that they believe threatens their herds, including the endangered Andean cat (Leopardus jacobita). We evaluated the use of local, mediumsized, mixed-breed guarding dogs to reduce predation and retaliatory killing of carnivores. We interviewed 64 herders, and delivered 37 puppies to 25 herders. Most economic loss was attributed to cougars (Puma concolor) and culpeos (Lycalopex culpaeus). Commentary: Wildlife Management Professionals Need To Redefine The Terms: Lethal Control, Nonlethal Control, And Live Trap, Stephen M. Vantassel

I argue that the terms lethal control, nonlethal control, and live trap are no longer sufficiently precise for continued use in the scientific community. Their continued use confuses the public and allows animal protectionists to use them as cudgels in political discourse. Alternative terms are recommended to resolve the semantic and subsequent political issues surrounding the traditional terms.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the plasma levels of endotoxin in bitches with pyometra and to investigate the effects of preoperative supportive therapy on plasma endotoxin levels (LPS), the complete blood count, serum biochemistry parameters (alanine amino transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein, albumin, urea, and creatinine), clinical health status at the 12th, 24th, and 48th h following presentation, and to explore if they were correlated. A 4-year old, primiparous, female Anatolian Shepherd dog was presented for evaluation of type II vaginal prolapse with alopecia of the left perineal skin. Hematological analyses demonstrated leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia. Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) levels were 156 pg/mL and 2.3 ng/mL, respectively. The vaginal smear was predominantly (at least 80%) made up of anuclear superficial cells. An abdominal ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous multicystic mass with anechoic areas adjacent to the caudal pole of the left kidney. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. The patient in this study was a 20-year-old thoroughbred gelding. After clinical and radiographical assessments, a bilateral rostral mandibular body fracture was determined. Fracture stabilization was achieved via a bilateral interfragmentary cerclage wire application. The horse started to use its jaw within 24 h of surgery. Postoperative radiographs were taken until month 6, at different periods, and fracture healing was evaluated. Fixation materials were left in place. Fracture healing occurred with a rostral part malocclusion. The purpose of this study was to give clinical information about mandibular fractures and treatment of these fractures in a horse.

The first report of an unusual anal atresia with growth of ectodermal organs (wool and skin) in the shape of the intestine inside the body is provided here. During reconstructive surgery, a rectum-like structure was noted, in which wool strands grew densely. A hypothetical mechanism by which this structure formed is presented on the basis of local alterations in fetal tissue proliferation and rate of development.

In this report, congenital lymphoma of B-cell lineage in a Brown Swiss calf is described. A large mass was seen on the head of the calf at birth. At necropsy, multiple masses were found on the skin and internal organs. A histopathological examination showed atypical lymphoid cells separated by connective tissue. None of the tumor cells showed a positive reaction to CD3, but the cells were immunopositive for CD79\alphacy. A CD45+ reaction confirmed a hematopoietic origin of the neoplasm. Tumor cells were also positive for lambda light chain IgG (\lambda IgG). Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunostaining showed diffuse nuclear …

The present study focused on the effect of water temperature on growth and feed conversion ratio of juvenile Black Sea flounder (Platichthys flesus luscus; initial weight: 2.0 g ± 0.01 g). The experiment was carried out for 84 days with the following range of water temperatures: 13, 17, 21, and 25 °C. Growth, food consumption, and feed conversion ratio were the highest at 21 °C and the lowest at 13 °C. The growth rate of the fish increased with water temperatures up to 21 °C and it decreased significantly with a further increase in temperature. The conclusion of this study …

A transitional zone in the dog renal artery was documented and its parameters were recorded: length and volumes of the luminal wall, tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica adventitia-as well as these parameters in the non-transitional zone of artery. Twelve normal adult male dogs were studied. The specimens were processed in the routine manner for light and electron microscopy. In mechanized modern dairy facilities with competitive environments, monitoring behavior provides opportunities to manipulate and optimize the nutritional, health, and social status of high-merit cows. The objective of the current study was to determine seasonal and cow group effects on the eating, ruminating, standing, and lying behaviors of dairy cows in large yards. Seasonal data on various behaviors of lactating cows in different production and lactation stages were collected continuously for 26 months, from December 2006 through February 2008. In order to determine the seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in suspected dogs in Minnesota, the present study examines the database of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Minnesota over a 10 year period (2001-June 2010). A total of 1081 serum samples from dogs suspected of having borreliosis were submitted by 112 private veterinary clinics. The samples were tested using an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Samples with titers of =>1:320 were considered positive. The rate of seroprevalence of antibodies was 88%. Only healthy laying hens are capable of producing an average of 280 eggs in 1 year of exploitation. Production of consume eggs takes place in intensive housing systems where the laying hens are still mainly kept in cages under controlled conditions. A 4-year-old Chios ewe was submitted to the Clinic of Farm Animals (School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). The animal had delivered 2 healthy lambs, 2 days earlier, and was inappetent, depressed, and reluctant to move, while it had tachycardia and tachypnea. The cervix was opened at a dilation of 1 finger in diameter and fetid fetal membranes expelled from the vagina. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes in the blood gas profile of jumpers after warm up and after a show jumping competition. Fertile eggs were obtained from a commercial flock of Ross broiler breeders (51 weeks old) and candled to determine the presence of hairline or star cracks. Eggs (5400 total) were assigned in equal numbers to 3 treatments (hairline-cracked, star-cracked, and normal eggs) and incubated for 21 days. Upon hatching, 10 chicks per treatment were euthanized, and organ weights were measured. Compared with normal eggs, the presence of egg shell cracks (regardless of type) resulted in higher egg weight loss at the time of transfer; a decrease in hatchability, hatch of fertile eggs, chick length, yolk-free body mass (P < 0.01), and percentage of hatchling breast and liver weight (P < 0.05); and an increase in the contamination rate of eggs (P < 0.01). Weight loss in hairline-cracked eggs was significantly higher than in star-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Percentage hatchability and body weight of chicks hatched from star-cracked eggs was higher than in chicks from hairline-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Crack type did not have a significant effect on chick length and body weight uniformity; however, the Pasgar score as a quality indicator was higher in chicks hatched from star-cracked eggs than those from hairline-cracked eggs (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments in terms of heart and small intestine weight. The contamination rate of hairline-cracked eggs was higher than that of star-cracked (P < 0.01). A higher incidence of embryonic mortality was observed during days 1-8 of incubation for shell-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Total embryonic mortality in hairline-cracked, star-cracked, and normal eggs was 51.1%, 36.6%, and 13.3%, respectively. This study showed that egg shell cracks reduced incubation parameters and chick quality. The negative effects of hairline cracks were more pronounced than those of star cracks.

The objective of this study was to investigate the morphology and the distribution of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), somatostatin (SS), gastrin (Gas), glucagon (Glu), and substance P immunoreactive (IR) cells in the digestive tract of gray goose by the immunohistochemical streptavidin-peroxidase method. The samples were taken from 10 healthy adult gray geese. The results showed that 5 kinds of IR cells were mainly distributed between the mucous epithelium and intestinal gland. This study was designed to investigate the effects of a supplement of inulin and \beta-glucan into broiler rations on growth performance, serum cholesterol, intestinal length, and immune system. A total of 320 male 1-day-old Ross PM3 broiler chicks were divided into 1 control and 3 treatment groups, each comprising 80 birds. Each group was divided into 4 replicate groups of 20 birds each.
