To investigate the global response of microvascular endothelial cells (MVECs) to foot-and-mouth (FMDV)disease vaccine (FMDV) antigen and to explore the role of MVECs in FMD vaccine immunity, the gene expression alterations of rat myocardium microvascular endothelial cells (RMMVECs) after stimulation with FMD virus (FMDV) 146S antigen were assayed using cDNA microarrays. We observed that 18 genes and 67 genes in RMMVECs were respectively altered by FMDV 146S antigen at 6 h and 24 h, respectively. Avian influenza (AI) occurs worldwide and causes tremendous economic losses. The disease is characterised by respiratory signs, depression, and reduced food and water intake. In the present study, an oil-based vaccine created by using Montanide ISA 70 MVG, was prepared and the duration of immunity checked at different time intervals. For this purpose, the cumulative mean titre (CMT) was calculated after employing haemagglutination inhibition test in 50 pullets at day zero before vaccination and then inoculated 0.3 mL of emulsified vaccine subcutaneously in 40 birds while 10 birds were kept non-vaccinated as a control group throughout the experiment. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of replacing fish oil (FO) with cottonseed oil (CSO), as an alternative plant lipid source in diets for rainbow trout (89.3 ± 1.1 g mean individual weight), on the growth and fatty acid composition of fish. As a control diet, 5 experimental diets were formulated with pure FO and with partial or complete (25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% CSO, respectively) replacement of FO with CSO. In this study, a total of 28 Saanen does were used to evaluate the relationship between somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield. The study included 14 first-lactation (primiparous) does and 14 does in second lactation or greater (multiparous). Individual milk samples from both morning and evening milkings were taken every 15 days throughout the lactation period of 7 months. Population Ecology Of A Phthirapteran Occurring On The Common Baya (Ploceus Philippinus) (Ploceidae: Passeriformes: Aves), Gaurav Arya, Nayanci Bansal, Aftab Ahmad, Nidhi Gupta, Arun Kumar Saxena

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

One hundred common Bayas (Ploceus philippinus) were examined for their ectoparasites, during April 2006 to December 2008 in the Rampur district of India (28°49'12"N 79°1'11"E). Seventy-four animals were found infested (mean intensity 13.97, sample mean abundance 10.3, range of infestation 1-45) with an ischnoceran louse, Brueelia plocea. The frequency distribution pattern of the louse on the aforesaid bird was aggregated but did not conform to the negative binomial model. The sex ratio was female biased while the nymphal population was dominant over adults.

The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between fetal number and placentome diameters in pregnant sheep. In the present study 25 Kıvırcık mixed breed pregnant ewes were used. Pregnancy of the ewes was diagnosed by transrectal ultrasonography by the 25th day after insemination. A transabdominal probe (6.5 MHz) was used on the pregnant ewes at the 30th day. At this time the placentomes appeared as hypoechogenic areas with a "C"-like shape. Throughout the pregnancies 5 placentomes were measured from each ewe every week. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of halving the intravaginal sponges impregnated with 20 mg of flugestone acetate (FGA; 20 or 10 mg) and a dose of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG; 600 or 300 IU) on fertility in Tahirova ewes. The aim of the present study was to provide a comparative description of the rabbit prostate complex and bulbourethral glands by means of ultrasonography, in order to obtain results that may be useful for the diagnosis of reproductive pathology in this species. The changes in the composition of milk with advancing pregnancy were investigated in Nili-Ravi dairy buffaloes. Forty lactating buffaloes were used, within 2-3 months postpartum. The animals were grouped as high, moderate, and low yielders; synchronized for estrus; and inseminated artificially. Milk yield was recorded daily and sampled fortnightly for analysis. The data were analyzed using the univariate weighted mean and general linear model. Decline in milk yield became significant after the 8th week post-conception. Conditions for in vitro maturation (IVM) of primary oocytes without conventionally used fetal calf serum and hormones were optimized in order to reduce the cost of laboratory produced buffalo embryos. The \beta-mannosidase (MANB) enzyme is involved in removing mannose residue from the nonreducing end, and its impaired activity leads to \beta-mannosidosis. MANB amino acid sequences of humans, other mammals, plants, fungi, and bacteria were compared to determine their similarities, differences, and predicted 3D structures. Our cloned MANB DNA sequence showed a 99% similarity to a previously reported human MANB DNA sequence but 16 nucleotide differences were observed, showing the polymorphic nature of the enzyme. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of repeat breeder syndrome (RBS) in different breeds and reproductive ages of cattle in central Croatia and to assess the effectiveness of hormone therapy as a treatment option. A total of 1088 dairy cows were observed, 218 heifers and 870 multiparous cows. After the third unsuccessful artificial insemination (n = 164) and a thorough clinical and gynecological examination, the cows were tested for sexually transmitted diseases. The animal material of this study was composed of 325 head Chios × Kıvırcık cross breeds. Question: Are there territory sizes, shapes, and movement rules that animals can use to maximize their presence for territorial and reproductive purposes? Features of the model: Individual-oriented simulation model of a focal male, a female (his mate), and six other males in adjacent territories. Simulation variables were territory size and aspect (length-to-width ratio), velocity, step size, and potential movement angle. Bark Beetle Fauna (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) Of The Coniferous Forests In The Mediterranean Region Of Western Turkey, With A New Record For Turkish Fauna, Oğuzhan Sarikaya, Mustafa Avci

Scolytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) species and their host plants of coniferous forests of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey were determined between 2006 and 2008. A total of 27 species of Scolytinae were collected from 59 different sites in Afyonkarahisar, Antalya, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta, and Muğla provinces. Hylastes angustatus (Herbst), H. linearis Erichson, Tomicus destruens (Wollaston), Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius), Pityogenes calcaratus (Eichhoff), P. pennidens Reitter, Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek), and O. suturalis (Gyllenhal) were recorded as new species for the Scolytinae fauna of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey. Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek) was recorded for the first time from Turkey.

Lecanid Rotifers (Rotifera: Monogononta: Lecanidae) From Iran, Esmat Khaleqsefat, Shahrokh Pashaei Rad, Reza Malekzadeh Viayeh

Rotifer diversity was investigated in 26 bodies of water in northwest Iran. Thirteen species of Lecanidae were identified, 6 of which are new records for Iran. The new records include Lecane flexilis (Gosse 1886), L. hamata (Stokes 1896), L. hastata (Murray 1913), L. lamellata (Daday 1893), L. papuana (Murray 1913), and L. punctata (Murray 1913). Drawings are provided, and both the seasonal and spatial distributions of the identified taxa are discussed. A brief comparison is made between the present study's results and those reported from Turkey.

Four oribatid mites new to the Turkish fauna, namely Licneremaeus licnophorus (Michael, 1882), Moritzoppia (Moritzoppia) tridentata (Forsslund, 1942), Lauroppia maritima acuminata (Strenzke, 1951), and Banksinoma lanceolata lanceolata (Michael, 1885), collected from Bolu province, Turkey, are given with their drawings and SEM photographs. On the basis of the collected samples, their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented.

Three new species are described: Ophiomyia quadrispinosa sp. nov., Metopomyza lingulata sp. nov., and Pseudonapomyza multicostata sp. nov. Five species are recorded from Turkey for the first time: Melanagromyza provecta (de Meijere), Liriomyza lutea (Meigen), L. periorbita Hendel, Phytomyza veronicicola Hering, and P. wahlgreni Rydén. All species were collected from Elazığ and Malatya provinces in 2007 and 2008. The general distribution and a description of each species are presented.

Distribution And Allometry Of The Knobby Swimcrab,Macropipus Tuberculatus (Roux, 1830) (Brachyura, Portunidae) In The Strait Of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea), Giandomenico Nardone, Sergio Ragonese

Distribution and biometric information for Macropipus tuberculatus of the Strait of Sicily were obtained via an experimental bottom trawl survey carried out in 2000. The species occurred with low frequency (20%) and abundance (365 specimens), showing a scattered spatial distribution, split in 2 preferential depth levels (90-160 m and 230-460 m). Males were larger and more abundant than females. The carapace length width relationship was allometric positive (b > 1), and the carapace length weight relationship was isometric (b = 3).

During the present study, 117 wild boars (Sus scrofa) were killed to examine their stomach contents in Islamabad, Pakistan. Stomach contents were found to be correlated with feeding sites, plant material, and the nature of food material and items consumed from both cultivated and noncultivated lands. The major component of the wild boar's diet in Islamabad was garbage (58%), followed by dead animals (16%), while the rest of the consumed food comprised cereals, herbs, grasses, weeds, tree bark, etc. Wheat leaves were prominent in samples collected from December 2005 until March 2006, when wheat grains (seed formation stage) became the …

Five species of aquatic Oligochaeta new for Montenegro were recorded from various types of fresh waters. Marionina argentea (Michaelsen, 1889) was reported from a subterranean stream. Propappus volki Michaelsen, 1916, Rhyacodrilus coccineus (Vejdovsky, 1876), and Cognettia sphagnetorum (Vejdovsky, 1877) were found in epigean streams. Haplotaxis gordioides (Hartmann, 1821) appeared in both subterranean and epigean streams. The list of aquatic oligochaetes from Montenegro now encompasses 39 species.

Balocha hainana, a new idiocerine leafhopper species of the genus Balocha Distant from southern China (Hainan province), is described and illustrated. A key to the 3 Chinese genera of the tribe Megipocerini is provided. An image of the male adult and illustrations of the male genitalia are also given.

The Camponotus fauna of the Kaz Mountains was examined horizontally and vertically, from 175 to 1600 m a.s.l. Materials were collected from 20 different localities and 11 different habitats between 2001 and 2003. In all, 14 species belonging to 3 subgenera (Colobopsis Mayr, Myrmentoma Forel, and Tanaemyrmex Ashmead) were found. The hitherto unknown sexuals of C. candiotes Emery and C. ionius Emery are described for the first time.

The rectal sac (Rs) is formed by enlargement of the rectal portion of the hindgut in Bombyx mori. The Rs consists of epithelium, connective tissue, and many rectal pads (Rps). Rps have a cortex and medulla. In the medulla 2-5 pyramidal epithelial cells synthesize proteinic secretory material (Ps), and then this substance localizes within epithelial cells and connective tissue. It was thought that lipoid secretory material (Ls) was synthesized by epithelial cells in the midgut and was delivered to the Rs; however, Ls was localized in the epithelium of the Rs and in the periphery of Rps. Length-weight relationships (LWRs) of 16,842 specimens of fish caught in the Bulgarian Black Sea waters, covering 9 families, 10 genera, and 10 species, were studied. Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias L.), thornback ray (Raja clavata L.), sprat (Sprattus sprattus L.), pontic shad (Alosa immaculata Eichwald), anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus Pallas), horse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus Aleev), bonito (Sarda sarda Bloch), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas), and turbot (Psetta maxima L.) were collected from May 2006 to December 2008. A left horn core of Sivaceros gradiens Pilgrim 1937 from Dhok Bun Amir Khatoon in the Lower Siwaliks of Pakistan was recovered, identified, and compared. Earlier specimens of S. gradiens excavated from the Lower Siwaliks of Pakistan were difficult to date. Conversely, the new material of S. gradiens from the Lower Siwaliks of Dhok Bun Amir Khatoon suggests an early Middle Miocene age (lower Chinji) for this species.

Contributions To The Opiinae Fauna Of Turkey (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Ahmet Beyarslan, Maximilian Fischer

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was carried out in order to determine the species of the subfamily Opiinae in Turkey. Between 1991 and 2008, malaise and light traps and sweeping nets were used to obtain adult specimens from various habitats in Turkey. A total of 116 species from 7 genera and 28 subgenera of the Opiinae were determined, and 45 of these species were new records for the Turkish fauna. The distribution of the species was evaluated taking into consideration the zoogeographic regions and phytogeographic provinces of Turkey.

We investigated the length distribution, sex ratio, sex inversion length, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age and length at first maturity of the common pandora inhabiting İzmir Bay. A total of 2654 common pandora were collected by trawl hauls of İzmir Bay (Turkey) between January 2002 and June 2007. The size of the samples ranged from 4.1 cm (0.95 g, February) to 27.8 cm (207.30 g, April) in total length. The samples were composed of 64.7% females, 5.1% males, 0.3% hermaphrodites, and 29.9% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.08. The age composition of the samples …
