This is the first record of a green frog Rana (Pelophylax) kl. esculenta population from the E-system in the north-western part of Romania. From April to July 2005 we analysed the trophic spectrum of 84 Rana kl. esculenta females, extracting and identifying a total number of 801 prey items. Beside animal preys, plant materials and remains of shed skin were identified in the stomach contents. We did not find any Rana kl. esculenta individuals with empty stomachs. The histological changes of gonads were studied in Aphanius persicus from the Barm-e-Shoor spring (south of Iran). The gonads were extracted and prepared histologically. The maturity stage of each specimen was examined according to size and weight of gonad, degree of occupation in the body cavity, the type and number of germinal cells (in testis) and follicles (in ovary). The early developmental stages of the Pisidae crab, Doclea muricata (Herbst, 1788), and the Epialtidae crab, Acanthonyx limbatus (A. Milne Edwards, 1862), from Pakistan are described for the first time. Zoeae I and II of Doclea muricata and Acanthonyx limbatus were obtained from field-collected ovigerous females that were kept under laboratory conditions. These larval stages are described, illustrated, and compared with those of earlier studies of known species of the genera. A number of records of rotifers from Turkey are discussed. An account is given on trophi morphology in 4 species of Asplanchna Gosse, 1850. Cephalodella segersi De Smet, 1998 is recorded for the second time after its description, and Lecane shieli Segers and Sanoamuang, 1994 is recorded from Turkey for the first time. Both these and a population of Hexarthra polyodonta polyodonta (Hauer, 1957) from the species’ type locality, Lake Van, are illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopic techniques.

Zooplankton Composition And Abundance In Lake Eğrigöl, A High Mountain Lake (Gündoğmuş, Antalya), Cem Aygen, Di̇dem Özdemi̇r Mi̇s, M. Ruşen Ustaoğlu, Süleyman Balik

Field studies were conducted in July and August 2000, and in June and September 2001 in order to determine the zooplankton composition and abundance of Lake Eğrigöl, a high mountain lake located 2060 m a.s.l. in the middle Taurus Mountain Range. In total, 41 species were found, including 30 Rotifera, 8 Cladocera, and 3 Copepoda. Based on the number of species and their abundance (individuals m^{-3}), rotifers were the dominant group (49.75%-90.92%), followed by Cladocera (6.54%-27.52%), and Copepoda (2.54%-22.72%). All taxa were first records for the lake.

Some ecological requirements of aquatic Coleoptera species were studied in a natural lake. Water beetle samples, collected in 2007 from the National Park Sahara-Karagöl belonging to the families Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, and Dytiscidae were identified and listed. Both physical (conductivity and temperature) and chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, hardness, organic matter, chloride, phosphate, and some metal ions) parameters of the inhabited water were measured.

Multivariate Morphometric Study On Apis Florea Distributed In Iran, Ayça Özkan, Mohammed M. Gharleko, Berna Özden, İrfan Kandemi̇r

Multivariate Morphometric and Spatial Autocorrelation Analyses were performed to determine the morphometric variation in Apis florea colonies representing 13 localities from 4 states on the coastal north-south diagonal in Iran. New morphometric characters (hind wing length, hind wing width, and hind wing angles) were also measured to determine the usefulness of these characters for Apis florea. Analysis of variance of new morphometric characters showed that 7 out of the 8 hind wing variables displayed statistically significant differences among populations (P < 0.05). The scatter plot from Canonical Variate Analysis revealed that the colonies from north (Ilam, Khuzestan, and Bushehr states) showed an overlapping distribution. The colonies from south (Hormuzgan state) formed a non-overlapping distant cluster. Based on the spatial autocorrelation analysis, 14 correlograms were significant for morphometric characters (According to the Bonferroni criterion). Six characters (CuB, C.Ind, HWW, B4, D7, and I13) showed clinal type correlogram.

The parasitoids of the small poplar longhorn beetle, Saperda populnea (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were studied in the Aras Valley (Kars and Erzurum provinces), Turkey, during 2006-2007. Five parasitoid species, Paraperithous gnathaulax (Thomson), Dolichomitus populneus (Ratzeburg), Dolichomitus tuberculatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Ipbiaulax impostor (Scopoli) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and Billaea irrorata (Meig.) (Diptera: Tachinidae), were reared from the over-wintering larvae living in the galls of S. populnea. Dolichomitus populneus was the most numerous of the parasitoids and accounted for 55% of all parasitoids reared. The aim of this study was to calculate the basic population parameters of Trachurus mediterraneus off the coast of the Eastern Black Sea. Average total length was estimated as 13.52 ± 1.884 cm for the entire population, 13.08 ± 1.594 cm for males, and 13.62 ± 1.804 for females. Average weight was 20.27 ± 8.819 g for the entire population, 18.65 ± 7.626 g for males, and 21.31 ± 9.184 g for females. Age of the fish ranged between 0 and 5 years. Fars province in the south of Iran was surveyed for Asilidae (Insecta: Diptera) during 2006-2007. Twenty six species, belonging to 19 genera and 7 subfamilies: Apocleinae (5 species), Asilinae (7 species), Dasypogoninae (2 species), Laphriinae (2 species), Laphystiinae (1 species), Leptogastrinae (1 species) and Stenopogoninae (8 species), were recorded. Of these, 5 species are new to the fauna of Iran. Additionally 2 subfamilies, 10 genera, and 22 species were recorded for the first time from Fars province. Distributional data for each species are included.

Different habitat types chosen from Kasnak Oak Forest Nature Reserve (Isparta, Turkey) and 3 plots with vegetation structure, were studied comparatively with Alticinae (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) species composition, its richness and abundance. The study was conducted between the months of April and October at 15-day intervals during 2005 and 2006. Sixty-six sets of data were obtained during the survey, including 22 samplings for each plot. Species composition, nocturnal activity and population dynamics of mosquitoes in the Aras Valley of Turkey are studied. Seven New Jersey light traps were activated two nights per month at different sampling sites showing various habitats such as riverside, orchard, roadside, village, wooded area, agricultural area and pasture in 30 km^^{2} area. An investigation was carried out on the native gastropod species in Lake Gölbaşı, Hatay. During the research 3 species belonging to the subclass Pulmonata (Gyraulus piscinarum, Radix labiata, Anisus leucostoma) were detected along with 9 species of the subclass Orthogastropoda (=Prosobranchia) including Theodoxus jordani, Semisalsa contempta, Semisalsa longiscata, Bithynia phialensis, Valvata saulcyi, Valvata piscinalis, Melanoides tuberculatus, Melanopsis praemorsa ferussaci, Melanopsis costata costata. These gastropod species were collected from 4 stations chosen in the lake. Furthermore, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature were measured at the sampling sites.

This research was conducted to record the fish species inhabiting Lake Ladik and its inlet and outlet streams between July 2003 and August 2004. Electrofishing equipment, fishing cast net, fisherman's dip net, and fishing nets with different scales were used to catch fish samples. As a result of evaluated samples caught from the research area, 12 species belonging to 4 families (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Esocidae, and Percidae) were identified.

Faunistic Studies On Some Genera Of The Subfamily Ceutorhynchinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) From The Central Anatolian And The Mediterranean Regions Of Turkey, Osman Sert

Twenty-nine species belonging to 17 genera of the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae are reported from the Central Anatolian and the Mediterranean regions of Turkey. Detailed distributions of these species in these 2 regions are given. Seventeen species are newly recorded from central Anatolia and 10 from the Mediterranean region. Datonychus urticae (Boheman, 1845) is a new record for Turkey.

From 2003 to 2006, the freshwater ciliates of northeastern Azerbaijan were studied. The present paper describes a new ciliate - Gymnocyclidium nabranicum n. gen., n. sp. (Gymnocyclidiidae n. fam.) that clearly differs from other representatives of Scuticociliatida by reduction of bipolar somatic kineties to 2 or 3 short longitudinal crowns. Gymnocyclidiidae n. fam. includes 3 genera - Gymnocyclidium n. gen. (type genus), Paurotricha Dragesco and Dragesco-Kerneis, 1991 and Paracyclidium Grolière, de Puytorac, Grain, 1980.

We tested whether Wolf (Canis lupus) visits to individual female White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) summer ranges during 2003 and 2004 in northeastern Minnesota were in accord with optimal-foraging theory. Using GPS collars with 10- to 30-minute location attempts on four Wolves and five female deer, plus eleven VHF-collared female deer in the Wolves’ territory, provided new insights into the frequency of Wolf visits to summer ranges of female deer. It is well established that ageing handicaps the ability of prey to escape predators, yet surprisingly little is known about how ageing affects the ability of predators to catch prey. Research into long-lived predators has assumed that adults have uniform impacts on prey regardless of age. Here we use longitudinal data from repeated observations of individually-known wolves (Canis lupus) hunting elk (Cervus elaphus) in Yellowstone National Park to demonstrate that adult predatory performance declines with age and that an increasing ratio of senescent individuals in the wolf population depresses the rate of prey offtake. (2009) analyzed molecular genetic data of the wolf in the Great Lakes (GL) region of the USA and concluded that the animal was a unique ecotype of grey wolf and that genetic data supported the population as a discrete wolf taxon. However, some of the literature that the researchers used to support their position actually did not, and additional confusion arises from indefinite use of terminology. Herein, we discuss the problems with designation of a wolf population as a taxon or ecotype without proper definition and assessment of criteria.

The complex geological and climatic events that significantly altered the landscape throughout the Cenozoic Era impacted the diversification of many North American taxa, including freshwater fishes. Here, I employ an array of phylogenetic analyses using a multiple gene tree approach to address several questions regarding the phylogenetic relationships of the North American cyprinid genus Richardsonius and two other closely related genera, Clinostomus and Iotichthys. I also use divergence time estimates generated using fossil calibrations to qualitatively assess the phylogeographic implications of evolution within and among these three genera.
