A meta-analysis of grazing trials in which cattle were supplemented with dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) was conducted to determine effects of supplementation on average daily gain (ADG) and final BW in pasture grazing situations. Additionally, pen studies were evaluated to determine the effects of DDGS supplementation on cattle intake, forage replacement, ADG and final BW. In both the pasture and the pen studies, ADG and final BW increased quadratically with increased level of DDGS supplementation. Feeding DDGS decreased forage intake quadratically; however, total intake for cattle supplemented DDGS increased quadratically with increased level of supplementation.

A growing study compared the effects of a diet consisting of corn distillers solubles (SOL) to the effects of a diet containing corn wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) when ensiled with cornstalks (stalks). Four levels of SOL and WDGS were fed at 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of diet DM. The effect of feeding ensiled WDGS and stalks was compared to feeding WDGS and stalks mixed fresh daily at 30% inclusion. WDGS-fed steers were more efficient than those fed solubles. Steer performance also improved with increased levels of byproducts. A finishing experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) and wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) with or without corn on feedlot performance and economics. Six treatment diets were evaluated: 1) 83% corn; 2) 44% WDGS and 44% corn; 3) 33% WDGS, 33% WCGF and corn; 4) 33% WDGS, 33% WCGF and soyhulls; 5) 44% WDGS and 44% WCGF; and 6) 66% WDGS and grass hay. Co-Product STORE — Storage To Optimize Ration Expenses — is a spreadsheet designed to quantify the costs of co-product storage. It allows producers to analyze and evaluate specific storage scenarios in response to changing market conditions using different storage methods. Two storage examples (bunker and silo bag) are evaluated to illustrate how the spreadsheet estimates storage costs.

To better understand co-product utilization, inclusion rates, pricing and storage strategies, Nebraska cattle producers were surveyed regarding their co-product feeding and pricing practices. Although nearly 91% of cattle on feed in Nebraska were being fed ethanol co-products in 2007, many types of co-products were being utilized from both ethanol plants in Nebraska and surrounding states. As illustrated by the price data collected, especially those for wet distillers grains plus solubles, opportunities existed for pricing and storage strategies, although more price variation was present in the data collected from the survey as compared to the prices reported by the Agricultural Marketing …

Dietary sulfur level is associated with hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) levels in the rumen. These studies quantified H2S levels at different times post feeding with or without added iron (Fe) or copper (Cu) to bind sulfur. In addition, the correlations of ruminal pH measurements to ruminal H2S gas levels were estimated. Correlations between ruminal pH and hydrogen sulfide levels were not large and Fe and Cu did not affect H2S levels.

Ruminally fistulated steers with wireless pH probes were utilized to quantify ruminal pH plus hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels produced at different times post feeding and to determine the effect of roughage level in high byproducts diets on hydrogen sulfide production. Because of variation in H2S levels, ruminal pH was not related to high H2S levels. When treatment means were used, pH and H2S levels were highly correlated. We observed lower H2S levels in diets with 7.5% or 15% grass hay compared with no roughage.

A maturity index (MI) was developed using data from Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory to predict a heifer’s optimal size for breeding. It was developed from observable information such as age, feeding regime, pre-breeding, birth and dam weights. The MI was the most precise predictor of actual percentage of mature weight versus using estimates developed from the herd’s estimated average weight or the dam’s mature weight. The MI also was a more accurate predictor of first pregnancy than the typically applied measure.

Maturity Index (MI) was used in a Probit regression as an explanatory variable of dystocia, where dystocia was used in a Probit regression as an explanatory variable of rebreeding rates of primiparous cows from data collected on replacement heifers from the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory. Dystocia was found to decrease from about 40% to 13% for heifers when the MI increased from 53 to 70, supporting the notion that maturity reduces the incidence of dystocia, resulting in an increase in the second pregnancy rate.

Aged (7 and 28 days) strip loins (m. Longissimus lumborum) from 90 yearling steers were used to assess the effect of supplemental vitamin E in diets containing wet distillers grains (WDG) with or without distillers solubles on surface discoloration of steaks during retail display. The greatest negative effects occurred as a result of aging, followed by the presence of solubles and then by the level of WDG. As discoloration increased, the importance of vitamin E in reducing discoloration also increased. Feeding WDG diets supplemented with vitamin E mitigates the surface discoloration of aged beef strip loin steaks during retail …

Effects of social interactions on responses to selection for ADG were examined with records of 9,720 boars from dam lines (1 and 2) and sire lines (3 and 4) provided by Pig Improvement Company. Each line was analyzed separately. Pens contained 15 boars. Gains (ADG) were measured from about 71 to 161 d of age and weight from 31 to 120 kg. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of feeding high-protein distillers dried grains (HPDDG) on rumen degradability, dry matter intake, milk production, and milk composition. Sixteen lactating Holstein cows (12 multiparous and 4 primiparous) averaging 80 ± 14 d in milk were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 crossover design. A finishing trial and a digestion trial were conducted to evaluate the effects of corn hybrid and processing method on nutrient digestibility, finishing performance, and carcass characteristics. A 2 × 5 factorial arrangement of treatments was used for both trials. Factors included 2 processing methods, dry-rolled (DRC) or high-moisture (HMC), and 5 commercially available corn hybrids. The finishing trial (Exp. 1) utilized 475 yearling steers (379 ± 15 kg initial BW), stratified by BW into 2 blocks then assigned randomly to 1 of 60 pens (8 steers/pen). A feedlot (Exp. 1) experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of an essential oil mixture (EOM), experimental essential oil mixture (EXP), tylosin, and monensin (MON) on performance, carcass characteristics, and liver abscesses. A metabolism experiment (Exp. 2) was conducted to evaluate the effects of EOM, EXP, and MON on ruminal fermentation and digestibility in finishing steers. Three studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of supplemental fat and salt (sodium chloride) on DMI, daily water intake (DWI), body temperature, and respiration rate (RR) in Bos Taurus beef cattle. In Exp. 1 and 2, whole soybeans (SB) were used as the supplemental fat source. In Exp. 3, palm kernel meal and tallow were used. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) constitutes one of the largest immunological organs of the body. The GIT must permit absorption of nutrients while also maintaining the ability to respond appropriately to a diverse milieu of dietary and microbial antigenic components. Because of the diverse population of antigenic components within the GIT, a sophisticated mucosal immune system has evolved that relies on collaboration between the innate and adaptive arms of immunity. The collaborative, mucosal immune effort offers protection from harmful pathogens while also being tolerant of dietary antigens and normal microbial flora. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of feeding 3 corn-milling coproducts on intake, milk production, ruminal fermentation, and digestibility of lactating Holstein cows. A 2-yr study was conducted using 200 long yearling steers/yr (436 ± 30 kg) to determine the effect on performance and economics of sorting by BW at feedlot entry and feeding 200 mg/steer of Optaflexx (OPT) daily for the last 28 d. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of corn hybrid and processing method on the site and extent of nutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation. Treatments consisted of 2 processing methods, dry-rolled corn (DRC) and high-moisture corn (HMC), and 3 hybrids, H-8562 (1), 33P67 (2), and H-9230 (3), in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. In Exp. 1, six ruminally cannulated crossbred steers (436 ± 8 kg) were used in a 6 × 6 Latin square design. Total tract DM, OM, and starch digestibility (STD) were greater (P < 0.10) for HMC compared with DRC. A hybrid × processing method interaction (P < 0.10) was observed for propionate concentration and the acetate-to-propionate ratio. In Exp. 2, two ruminally and duodenally fistulated steers were used to determine the site and extent of nutrient digestion using the mobile bag technique at 2 ruminal incubation times. Ruminal STD was not different (P = 0.14) among hybrids but was greater (P < 0.01) for HMC compared with DRC. Postruminal and total tract STD were greater (P < 0.01) for hybrids 1 and 3 than for hybrid 2, and were greater (P < 0.01) for HMC than DRC. In both experiments the geometric mean diameter and geometric SD were influenced (P < 0.05) by both hybrid and processing method. More intense processing methods or selection of hybrids with softer kernels will result in greater digestibility and ruminal propionate concentrations. Digestibility of corn samples can be characterized using the mobile bag technique but particle size can influence results.

Eighty-eight crossbred weaned steer calves (250 + 26 kg) were used to evaluate weight loss (shrink) when transported to a mock sale barn on differing days prior to sale. The calves were weaned 14 days and fed free choice grass hay and 0.9 kg of DDGS at UNL’s Dalbey-Halleck Research Unit. Two days before initiation of treatments all calves were fed grass hay ad libitum and initial BW were recorded on two consecutive days. Thirty-Seven Additional Microsatellite Loci In The Pacific Lion-Paw Scallop (Nodipecten Subnodosus) And Cross-Amplification In Other Pectinids, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Ana M. Ibarra, Bernie May

We characterized 37 new microsatellite markers in the Pacific lion-paw scallop (Nodipecten subnodosus) and tested for cross-amplification in four other species. Genetic diversity was estimated using 24 individuals from the Lagoon Ojo de Liebre, B.C.S., Mexico. Allelic richness varied from 5 to 27 alleles per locus and the average expected heterozygosity was 0.76. Ten loci exhibited significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium likely due to the presence of null alleles. Sixteen of these markers cross-amplified in closely related N. nodosus, while little or no amplification was observed in three Argopecten species.
