The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of stocking density on the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (H:L), blood corticosterone concentration, immune response, and some performance parameters in broilers during summer. In all, 300 1-day-old commercial broiler chicks (Ross 308) were housed at densities of 15, 20, and 25 birds/m^2, with 2 replicates of each. H:L ratio and blood corticosterone concentration were used to measure the level of stress in the birds. Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strains Isolated From Dogs With Otitis Externa, Süheyla Türkyilmaz

The aims of this study were to isolate Pseudomonas aeruginosa from dogs with otitis externa (OE), to determine the susceptibility of isolated strains to antibiotics, and to evaluate the incidence of the infection in the Aydın region. For this purpose, ear swab samples were obtained from 92 dogs with symptoms of OE infection and the samples were examined bacteriologically. Bacteria were isolated from 88 (96%) of 92 samples but no isolation was performed on 4 (4%) dogs. In total 93 microorganisms were identified. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mannan oligosaccharides (MOSs), which are commonly used as alternatives to antibiotics, on the growth performance and some blood parameters in broiler chickens. The study included 120 Ross 308 male broiler chicks (1-day-old at the beginning of the study). There were 4 treatment groups, each consisting of 3 replicates. MOSs were added at the level of 0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.15% to the starter and finisher diets. The experiment lasted 42 days. The Determination Of The Shelf Life And Some Nutritional Components Of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus Aurata L., 1758) After Cold And Hot Smoking, Şengül Bi̇lgi̇n, Mustafa Ünlüsayin, Levent İzci̇, Ali̇ Günlü

This study aimed to determine the shelf life, as well as chemical and microbiological quality of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L., 1758) prepared by 2 different methods of smoking (hot smoking and cold smoking). The effects of hot and cold smoking on the chemical composition and microbial load of gilthead seabream, as well as organoleptic analysis of the smoked product were investigated. Significant (P < 0.05) differences were found in the chemical composition of fresh and smoked seabream. The panelists liked the hot smoked fish more than the cold smoked fish, according to sensory analysis results. Changes in pH, thiobarbituric acid (TBA), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values were significant (P < 0.05) during storage at 4 °C. Microbiological analysis results demonstrated that the smoking techniques reduced the microbial content of the fish, whereas microbial content increased during storage. The smoking methods tested had a small effect on the level of vitamin D_3 in gilthead seabream.

Epidemiology Of Tropical Theileriosis In The Cappadocia Region, Abdullah İnci̇, Anil İça, Alparslan Yildirim, Zati̇ Vatansever, Ayşe Çakmak, Hasan Albasan, Yücel Çam, Ayhan Atasever, Önder Düzlü

A total of 554 cattle from the Cappadocia region were divided into 5 different groups according to vaccination and were examined for Theileria annulata by microscope and indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). The sampled cattle were checked for tick infestation. The prevalence of T. annulata was 60.5% by microscopic examination and 67.5% by IFAT. According to the microscopic examination, the prevalence of T. annulata was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the unvaccinated group. The seropositivity according to IFAT was significantly (P < 0.001) lower in the unvaccinated group. The morbidity was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the unvaccinated, semi-grazed, pure breed, and >2 years age groups. The mortality was significantly higher in the unvaccinated (P < 0.001), semi-grazed (P < 0.05), pure breed (P < 0.05), and female (P < 0.001) groups. A total of 1585 tick specimens belonging to the genera Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Dermacentor, Boophilus, and Ornithodorus were detected in 21.48% of examined cattle. The developing forms of T. annulata were determined in the H. anatolicum anatolicum ticks microscopically. Out of 554 cattle, 156 (27.61%) were diagnosed with acute tropical theileriosis. Out of these 156 cattle, 86 (56.21%) died due to the disease.

Uterine And Ovarian Metastasis Of Transmissible Venereal Tumor In A Bitch, Ayhan Baştan, Duygu Baki̇ Acar, Mehmet Cengi̇z

In this case report, metastasis of a transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) to the uterus and ovaries is presented. A 7-year-old female boxer dog with hemorrhagic vulvar discharge and a vaginal mass was brought to Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Clinics of Gynecology and Obstetrics. TVT was diagnosed by clinical findings and cytologic examination. Multifocal nodules in the uterus and enlargements of the uterine wall were detected by ultrasonographic examination. Ovariohysterectomy was performed because of uterine pathology. Histopathologic examination of the uterus and ovarium showed that the multifocal masses in the uterus and ovaries originated from vaginal TVT.

Jambo grass (Sorghum bicolour x Sorghum sudanefe) harvested 50 days after sowing was ensiled in laboratory silos using 2 additives, cane molasses and ground corn grains, each at the rate of 2%, 4%, and 6% levels for 30, 35, and 40 days at room temperature (28 °C). Data regarding incubation days were pooled. The pH and lactic acid concentration in jambo grass silage were not affected by the additive type, level, or fermentation period. Dry matter (DM) content of jambo silage was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by additive type; however, additive levels and fermentation periods did not affect its DM contents. Crude protein content of jambo grass was not affected by ensiling time, additive type, or level. The true protein contents of jambo grass silage were significantly (P < 0.05) higher with molasses than with ground corn. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and hemicellulose content of jambo grass were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by additives and their levels, but fermentation periods did not influence the NDF contents of jambo grass silage. Cellulose, acid detergent fiber, and acid detergent lignin contents of jambo silage were not affected by additive type, level, or fermentation period. Therefore, jambo grass ensiled with 2% molasses for 30 days was selected for in situ digestion kinetics in bulls. Dry matter and NDF degradabilities of jambo grass were significantly higher than those of its silage at 48 h of ruminal incubation. Ruminal lag time, and rate and extent of DM and NDF degradation were similar for jambo grass and its silage. The results of this study implied that jambo grass ensiled with 2% molasses for 30 days has similar nutritive value to that of its forage in bulls.

Presence of the chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) infection in chicken flocks in some provinces of Turkey was investigated by ELISA and PCR in this study. From 38 flocks (16 commercial layer, 10 commercial broilers, 4 breeder layers and 8 breeder broilers), 922 serum samples were tested for CIAV-specific antibodies using a commercially available competitive ELISA. CIAV antibodies were positive in 609 (66.0%) sera from 34 flocks (89.5%). The study was conducted to evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a DNA vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). Genes encoding the P1, 2A, 3C of FMDV O/China99 and bovine IFN-\alpha were cloned into pcDNA3.1 (+) expression vector under CMV promoter and FMDV IRES control, respectively. The recombinant plasmids were administered to guinea pigs by intramuscular injection with mono- or bicistronic expression plasmids and aurintricarboxylic acid (ATA). The method found with mouse morulae was then applied to the cryopreservation of biopsied goat embryos. This study was performed to investigate the presence of halophylic Vibrio spp. in horse-mackerel (Trachurus trachurus L., 1758). In total, 80 fish samples were collected from fish markets and supermarkets between 04.04.2006 and 16.05.2006 in the city of Mersin. All fish samples were microbiologically tested for halophylic Vibrio spp. Nine (11.25%) Vibrio spp. strains were isolated and identified as V. alginolyticus. Molecular epidemiological discrimination and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of V. alginolyticus strains were also analysed by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR) and Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion, respectively. The effects of dietary boric acid (BA) supplementation on feed consumption, feed efficiency, egg production, egg weight, eggshell thickness, eggshell breaking strength, and some serum parameters (Ca, P, and Mg) were examined in 100 layer hens at 60 weeks of age. Commercial corn-soy-based layer diets were formulated as basal diets for the control treatment. Antibioresistance Of Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated From Chicken Colibacillosis In Western Algeria, Abdelhamid Hamoudi, Hebib Aggad

In western Algeria, 251 Escherichia coli isolates were recovered from broilers with clinical signs and lesions of colibacillosis. Serotyping showed that 82% of the isolates belong to one of the following serotypes: O78, O2, and O1. Antibiograms revealed a high level of resistance to oxytetracycline (82%), amoxicilline and ampicilline (47%), trimethoprim-sulfmethoxazole (42%), oxolinic acid and flumequine (31%). However, only a low percentage of strains were resistant to enrofloxacine (6%) and colistine (3%). Although multiresistance was common, low association was found between the serotype and antibioresistance.

Seasonal Variation Of Vitamin A And Beta-Carotene Levels In Ghezel Sheep, Gholamreza Afshari, A. Hasanpour, H. Haghpanah, Bahram Amoughli-Tabrizi

The present study was conducted to investigate the variations in blood serum and hepatic levels of vitamin A and b-carotene in Ghezel sheep throughout the year. From 1000 sheep aged 1-5 years, blood and liver samples were collected before and after slaughter. The levels of vitamin A and \beta-carotene in both samples were determined spectrophotometrically. The results showed significant differences between summer and winter values (P < 0.05), but no differences were found between the sexes (P > 0.05). There were significant correlations between the vitamin A levels in serum and the liver (P < 0.05). Due to low levels of vitamin A and \beta -carotene in Ghezel sheep during the winter, supplementary feeding of vitamin A is recommended during this season.

In this study the presence of Listeria spp. is tested in 100 ready-to-eat food samples purchased from different stores and traditional food shops in the province of Ankara. The tested materials were 20 each of the following: mayonnaise based salad, kadınbudu köfte (fried meatball), fried liver, rice stuffed mussel, and green salad. Microbiological analyzes showed that 13 of 100 salad samples (13%) were contaminated with Listeria spp. while 10 of 100 salad samples (10%) were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Circadian variations in serum triiodothyronine (T_3), thyroxine (T_4), free triiodothyronine (fT_3), and free thyroxine (fT_4) levels were investigated in Iranian ewes. For that purpose, blood samples were collected from the jugular veins of 15 adult clinically healthy Iranian nonpregnant uniparous ewes every 6 h (0600, 1200, 1800, and 0000) during 6 days in summer with a mean ambient temperature of 40 °C. Serum T_3, T_4, fT_3, and fT_4 were measured by radioimmunoassay. Herein, diffuse-type seminoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in an 18-year-old male camel are described. The seminoma was located on the right testis (11 x 8.5 x 4.5 cm) and the cut surface of the tumor had a lobulated appearance. The tumor cells disseminated diffusely in the tumoral stroma with hemorrhages, and multiple necrotic foci were seen with microscopic examination. Additionally, the liver was enlarged, firm, and grayish-white; multiple lesions were observed both on the serosal surface and in the cut surface of the liver. This study was performed to determine the effects of feeding pollen cake containing honeybee royal jelly on Bombus terrestris colony development. In total, 125 bumblebee queens, 68 of which were fed pollen cake containing 10% royal jelly and 57 of which were fed normal pollen cake, were used. The fatty acid composition was determined for 14 feeds commonly available in Turkey for marine fish species, particularly sea bream and sea bass (juvenile, adult, and broodstock). Nine of the juvenile and adult fish feeds and 1 of the broodstock fish feeds were imported. The other feeds were produced in Turkey. The n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) levels in the feeds of juvenile, adult, and broodstock fish were 2.5%-3.9%, 1.5%-3.5%, and 2.1%-4.9% of the dry weight of diets, respectively. Apparent Nutrient Digestibility Of Balanced Diets With Soy Bean Extract Or Meat And Bone Meal In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.) Infected With Vibrio Anguillarum, Kenan Engi̇n, Ferbal Özkan

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., infected with Vibrio anguillarum or not infected were fed balanced diets containing vegetal (solvent extracted soy bean meal (SBM)) or animal (meat and bone meal (MBM)) protein sources in order to demonstrate the apparent nutrient and energy digestibility. Regardless of protein sources in the diets, feed intake was lower in the infected group. Apparent nutrient (AD_{DM} and AD_{CP}) and energy digestibility (AD_{kJ}) values of Nile tilapia fed the SBM diet were significantly better (P < 0.05) than those fed the CONT and MBM diets and changed little between the measurement days in both groups (non-infected and infected). Although no visible symptoms associated with vibriosis were evident on either the skin or internal organs, the significantly lower (P < 0.05) AD_{DM}, AD_{CP}, and AD_{kJ} values obtained between day 1 and 10 (specifically on days 3 and 10) in the infected group fed the CONT and MBM diets might have implicated the pathogenicity of the bacteria. Further research concentrating on higher amounts of solvent extracted soy bean and meat and bone meal, different environmental conditions and doses of infection with V. anguillarum and immune response parameters including physiological and cellular stress responses is needed in order to identify the overall apparent nutrient digestibility of plant and animal protein sources in Nile tilapia infected with V. anguillarum.

Hypocalcemia was diagnosed in 48 Ossimi ewes in a flock of 125 sheep. Clinical signs, feed analysis, biochemical findings, and response to treatment were used for diagnosis. Lactating ewes were more frequently affected (56.25%) than pregnant (33.33%) and dry non-pregnant (10.41%) ewes. Teeth grinding, voiding soft pellets, absence of recumbency, non-tympanic rumen, dry mouth, and thin body condition were atypical findings. Ruminal fluid analysis showed significant increases of potassium and ammonia (P < 0.05), and a significant decrease of magnesium (P < 0.05) in diseased ewes, as compared with clinically normal ewes. Serum calcium, magnesium, and glucose in the diseased ewes were significantly lower (P < 0.001), (P < 0.01), (P < 0.05) than in clinically normal and control ewes, respectively; however, there was a significant increase of acetone (P < 0.01). In all, 2 ewes were slaughtered due to the failure to respond to treatment and only the kidneys had gross abnormality. Histopathological examination showed degenerative changes in the renal tubules, with deposition of calcium oxalate crystals. The results of this study indicate that the clinical syndrome of hypocalcemia and renal failure occurred in Ossimi sheep that feed on beet tops. The observed atypical signs of hypocalcemia highlight the importance of examining serum and ruminal fluid to determine the proper intervention.

The clinical and haematological findings in dairy cattle with naturally infected bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) infection were evaluated. Thirty-seven (12.3%) out of 300 cattle that had previously been found positive for BIV infection were monitored. This study is aimed to detect Coxiella burnetii in cattle by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). A total of 138 cattle blood samples were collected from 8 farms and then examined in laboratory conditions. The examination of Coxiella burnetii was carried out by PCR with specific primers. In this study, a total of 6 (4.3%) cattle serum samples were found PCR positive for Coxiella burnetii. This result proves that cattle are an important reservoir of Coxiella burnetii infection.
