This review contains a brief description of the Abrolhos System and its special values. It also states the goal and principal objectives for management during the next ten years (2006-2016), along with updated strategies to achieve these objectives. The document succinctly outlines the direction for multiple use management of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands as determined by the Abrolhos Islands Management Advisory Committee (AIMAC). The Committee’s role is to advise the Minister for Fisheries on management of the Abrolhos Islands and the Abrolhos Islands Fish Habitat Protection Area.

Nematodes are common soil pests that feed on the roots of a wide range of crop plants in all agricultural areas of Western Australia, irrespective of soil type and rainfall. Nematodes multiply on susceptible hosts. Consequently, as nematode populations increase, crop production is limited. Cereal yield losses due to nematodes in Western Australia are in the order of 5 to 15 per cent per annum, but individual losses as high as 40 per cent have been recorded.

Winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) come inshore during the late winter and early spring to lay their eggs in shallow bays and estuaries along the coast. Unlike most fish eggs, which are buoyant, these eggs are demersal and sink to the seafloor. This makes them vulnerable to burial from various types of natural and human caused disturbances (e.g., storms, mobile fishing gear, maintenance dredging). Our objective was to map spawning areas in two harbors and search for generalities among these sites that would allow us to predict where winter flounder might spawn in other areas. Two research stations, the Cottonwood and Antelope Range Livestock Research Stations, are located in western South Dakota that allow research projects focused on needs of range livestock producers in that region. The stations are comprised primarily of native rangeland that is grazed by cattle at both stations, and also by sheep at Antelope. The philosophy of the research efforts has been focused on conducting applied research to solve problems and address rangeland and livestock management opportunities relevant to the livestock producers and land mangers of the region.

Six mixes of feed were manufactured and analyzed to determine how sequence of ingredient addition into a feed mixer influences mixing characteristics when modified distillers grains (mDG) was used as a feed ingredient. Five mixes were manufactured using a 3-bar rotor mixer and one mix was manufactured using a staggered-rotor mixer. There were three diet types evaluated: 1) high-forage receiving diet; 2) high-grain finishing diet with ground grass hay (GH) as the roughage source; and 3) high-grain finishing diet with silage as the roughage source. Profitable livestock production almost always requires a forage program that will supply large quantities of adequate quality, homegrown feed. A major percentage of the feed units for beef (83%) and dairy cattle (61%) come from forages. In addition, forages supply an estimated 91%, 72%, 15% and 99% of the nutrients consumed by sheep and goats, horses, swine, and wildlife, respectively.

Tall fescue is the predominant forage grass of Kentucky. It is an easily established, relatively persistent bunchgrass that has reasonable drought tolerance and does well in clay or loam soils. However, the endophyte fungus found in the grass was linked to poor animal performance in the late 1970’s (Ball, Hoveland, and Lacefield). It has been estimated that 85% of Kentucky’s fescue pastures are endophyte infected, making it a serious problem for Kentucky cattle producers (Lacefield, Henning, and Philips). Producers interested in establishing or replacing tall fescue stands have several options available to them.

This has led me to make every effort to reduce my reliance on machinery and to allow the cows to do the work. I focus on maximizing forage utilization and minimizing the number of days of feeding stored feeds.

Research has indicated that luteinizing hormone (LH) pulses play a vital role in corpus luteum (CL) formation and subsequent progesterone concentrations. Therefore, our objectives were to determine: 1) when LH pulses begin following onset of estrus, 2) the effect an injection of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) would have on initiation of LH pulses, and 3) the effect LH pulse initiation had on subsequent plasma progesterone concentrations. Research has demonstrated that supplemental fat and(or) changes in growth hormone (GH) or insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations may affect reproductive performance in beef females. Dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) contain approximately 10% to 15% fat; however, minimal research to date has investigated DDGS specifically as a supplemental fat source. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the embryonic precursors of adult egg and sperm. Isolation, propagation, genetic manipulation and reimplantation of modified PGCs that retain their commitment to the germline have been recently described for the successful generation of transgenic chickens [1]. Here, we report the adaptation and application of these techniques to Japanese quail for the purpose of future applications involving the introduction of a phytase transgene as previously described [2]. We describe results of a multi-year effort to strengthen consideration of the human dimension into endangered species risk assessments and to strengthen research capacity to understand biodiversity risk assessment in the context of coupled human-natural systems. A core group of social and biological scientists have worked with a network of more than 50 individuals from four countries to develop a conceptual framework illustrating how human-mediated processes influence biological systems and to develop tools to gather, translate, and incorporate these data into existing simulation models. Morphology typically enhances the fidelity of sensory systems. Sharks, skates, and rays have a well-developed electrosense that presents strikingly unique morphologies. Here, we model the dynamics of the peripheral electrosensory system of the skate, a dorsally flattened batoid, moving near an electric dipole source (e.g., a prey organism). We compute the coincident electric signals that develop across an array of the skate's electrosensors, using electrodynamics married to precise morphological measurements of sensor location, infrastructure, and vector projection. Our results demonstrate that skate morphology enhances electrosensory information. Not only could the skate locate prey using a simple population vector algorithm, but …

Predicting the spatial foci of zoonotic diseases is a major challenge for epidemiologists and disease ecologists. Migratory birds are often thought to be responsible for introducing some aviozoonotic pathogens such as West Nile and avian influenza viruses to a local area, but most information on how bird movement correlates with virus prevalence is anecdotal or indirect. Buggy Creek virus (family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus, BCRV) is an alphavirus within the western equine encephalitis virus complex whose primary vector is the swallow bug, Oeciacus vicarius Horvath (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), an ectoparasite of the colonially nesting cliff swallow, Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, that is also a frequent host for the virus.We investigated ecological correlates of BCRV infection in 100-bug pools at 14 different swallow colony sites in southwestern Nebraska from summer 2004, by using plaque assay on Vero cells to identify cytopathic virus and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to identify noncytopathic viral RNA. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of adding a combination of exogenous enzymes to starter diets varying in protein content and fed to broilers vaccinated at day of hatch with live oocysts and then challenged with mixed Eimeria spp. Five hundred four 1-d-old male Cobb-500 chickens were distributed in 72 cages. The design consisted of 12 treatments. Three anticoccidial control programs [ionophore (IO), coccidian vaccine (COV), and coccidia-vaccine + enzymes (COV + EC)] were evaluated under 3 CP levels (19, 21, and 23%), and 3 unmedicated-uninfected (UU) negative controls were included for each one of the protein levels. This study was based on 558 specimens belonging to 23 species of 10 genera of Chrysopidae of the order Neuroptera. These specimens were collected from Ardahan, Iğdır and Kars provinces between 2001 and 2003. Among the species, Dichochrysa ventralis Curtis, 1834 is a new record for the Turkish Neuroptera fauna. The distribution of each species, worldwide and in Turkey, is also presented.

Otiorhynchus lederi Stierlin, 1876 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was detected in northeastern Anatolia. This species has been known as a parthenogenetic form so far. We found in Transcaucasus and Turkey several bisexual populations of this species for the first time and we redescribed them. O. lederi is allied to Otiorhynchus erivanensis Reitter, which was described from Armenia. Diagnostic features separating these 2 species were indicated. Both of these species are new records for the Turkish fauna. Tag retention, growth, molting, and survival of crayfish, Procambarus acutus acutus, 35-37 mm in total length were evaluated between tagged and untagged groups. There were no significant differences in molting and survival between the tagged and untagged groups (P > 0.05). Tag retention was 100% for crayfish kept individually in plastic containers for the 60-day experimental period. The tagged group had a mean growth of 7.0 mm (molts only) while the untagged group had a mean growth of 4.0 mm (molts only). Molting rates were similar between the tagged and untagged groups. Allozyme variations were investigated by the electrophoretic analysis of 20 gene loci in 5 populations of Mesocricetus brandti and Mesocricetus auratus from Anatolia and Iran. Of the 20 loci analysed, 11 were monomorphic and fixed for the same allele in all 5 populations, 9 loci were polymorphic, and 1 locus differed between M. auratus and M. brandti populations. The overall mean of polymorphic loci for all the populations was 24.7% (range: 5.9%-41.2%). The mean fixation index value was F_{ST} = 0.0748, indicating a 7% genetic variation in the M. brandti populations. The obtained FST values indicated that there are moderate …

This study is based on 349 specimens belonging to 24 species of 17 genera of Myrmeleonidae of the order Neuroptera, and these insects were collected from Ardahan, Iğdır, and Kars provinces between 2001 and 2003. Among the species, Deutoleon turanicus Navas, 1927 and Distoleon luteomaculatus Hölzel, 1972 are new to the fauna of Turkish Myrmeleonidae. The distribution of each species in Turkey and in the rest of the world is presented.

The Bivalvia (Mollusca) fauna was studied from benthic samples collected from 101 stations from various biotopes in the Turkish Aegean Sea in 2000. Two species, namely Dacrydium hyalinum (Monterosato, 1875) and Musculus discors (Linnaeus, 1767), new to the Turkish Bivalvia fauna are reported. Notes on the morphological and ecological features of these species are provided.

Rana holtzi, which is only known from Karagöl at altitude 2500 m and Çinigöl at altitude 2600 m, was determined from Eğrigöl for the first time at altitude 3000 m. Thus, the distribution range of R. holtzi in the Bolkar Mountains was extended. In addition, specimens of Rana macrocnemis were recorded from Seviçova (2500 m a.s.l.), located in the Bolkar Mountains near Ereğli (Konya), for the first time. Furthermore, the village of Örtülü (Maden, Elazığ), where specimens of Rana macrocnemis were captured, is determined to be southernmost distribution point of R. macrocnemis. Two expeditions were carried out during July 1996 and July 1997 in order to determine the Oligochaeta fauna of 16 high altitude lakes located in the Taurus Mountains in south-west Anatolia (Turkey). No previous faunistic studies exist from the Taurus Mountains regarding physico-chemical features and Oligochaeta fauna. Fifteen species were identified, comprised of the families Tubificidae (11 species), Naididae (3 species), and Lumbriculidae (1 species). Among the samples, Tubificidae were the most dominant (73% of the specimens), followed by Naididae (20%) and Lumbriculidae (7%).
