Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Cost of gain is an important factor in determining the profit or loss of feeder cattle. For comparison of cost of gain between cattle finished in Southeast South Dakota and cattle finished in Southwest Kansas closeouts of cattle fed at the Opportunities Farm near Lennox, SD were compared with information published by Kansas State University in the monthly Focus on Feedlots. Cattle feeders in the Midwest, including South Dakota, are competitive with cattle feeders in other regions of the United States due to this regions lower ration costs and cost of gain.

Effects Of A Marginal Zinc Diet On Intestinal Health And Immune Function, Daniel G. Peterson, James P. Mcclung, Angus G. Scrimgeour, Elizabeth A. Koutsos

Animal Science

Zinc (Zn) is an essential nutrient for overall health and proper immune function, especially within the digestive system, although the specific mechanisms by which it exerts these effects are not well understood. In this study we examined the effects of short term exposure to a marginal Zn diet on the intestinal health and immune function of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenged mice through plasma cytokine profiling and histologic evaluation of intestinal tissue sections. Adult male mice were fed a Zn-adequate (30 ppm) or Zn-marginal (3 ppm) diet for 4 wk and then a bacterial challenge was simulated with an intraperitoneal injection of …

Prevalence And Serovars Of Salmonella In The Feces Of Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Nebraska, David G. Renter, David P. Gnad, Jan M. Sargeant, Scott E. Hygnstrom

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

To determine the prevalence and serovars of Salmonella in free-ranging deer, we cultured feces from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) harvested by hunters during a regular firearm season in southeastern Nebraska (USA). We recovered Salmonella from 5 (1%; 95% confidence interval: 0.37– 2.20%) of 500 samples and identified four different Salmonella enterica serovars [Litchfield (1), Dessau (1), Infantis (2), and Enteritidis (1)]. Although the prevalence of Salmonella in free-ranging deer appears to be low, the serovars recovered are known to be pathogenic to humans and animals.

In February 2001, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) adopted a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) along the North Bosque River. Within this TMDL, dairy waste application fields were identified as the major nonpoint-source contribution of nutrients. In September 2000, a manure composting program was initiated that resulted in about 500,000 metric tons of dairy manure being hauled to composting facilities and exported from the watershed through December 2004. To evaluate the impact of the manure composting program on stream water quality, storm event mean concentrations of nutrients and total suspended solids were compared …

Five treatments were analyzed: 1) unmedicated uninfected control; 2) unmedicated infected control; 3) feed additives monensin (bacitracin methylene disalicylate) + monensin (Coban 60; AI); 4) EO blend CP; and 5) EO blend CA. Additives were mixed into a basal feed …

The Cattle Industry's Guidelines For The Care And Handling Of Cattle Jan 2006

The Cattle Industry's Guidelines For The Care And Handling Of Cattle

Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance Program

Cattlemen have long recognized the need to properly care for livestock. Sound animal husbandry practices, based on decades of practical experience and research, are known to impact the wellbeing of cattle, individual animal health and herd productivity. Cattle are produced in very diverse environments and geographic locations in the United States. There is not one specific set of production practices that can be recommended for all cattle producers. Personal experience, training and professional judgment can serve as a valuable resource for providing proper animal care.

Application Of The 1996 Nrc To Protein And Energy Nutrition Of Range Cattle, H. H. Patterson, D. C. Adams, T. J. Klopfenstein, G. P. Lardy

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Based on applications of the 1996 National Research Council (NRC) Nutrient Requirement of Beef Cattle (2000 update) model at our laboratories and on use of the model to evaluate published literature, it is our assessment that the NRC model (Level 1) represents an advancement in nutrient requirements of grazing cattle. We evaluated 8 published studies (35 treatment observations) to compare observed changes in body condition score (BCS) to those predicted by the NRC model, and to develop criteria to help with application of the model to range cattle nutrition. When in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) of grazed diets was …

Testing Intervention Strategies To Reduce The Prevalence Of Lung Lesions In Lambs, Jay A. Daniel, Jeff E. Held Jan 2006

Testing Intervention Strategies To Reduce The Prevalence Of Lung Lesions In Lambs, Jay A. Daniel, Jeff E. Held

South Dakota Sheep Research Reports, 2006-07

We have previously demonstrated that lung lesions decrease average daily gain in lambs. We have also observed fall born lambs have a lower prevalence of lung lesions than spring born lambs. The different prevalence in lung lesions between spring and fall born lambs suggests that lung lesions can be prevented. Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica and/or Pasteurella multocida are present in lambs with moderate or severe lung lesions, but not in lambs with normal lung tissue. In serial slaughter studies, we observed lung lesions formed post-weaning. Therefore, we designed two studies to test possible intervention strategies to reduce the prevalence or severity …
