A total of 272 specimens of tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) caught in Lake Mogan (Ankara) were examined for the presence of the plerocercoids of Ligula intestinalis, and growth parameters such as age composition, age-length, age-weight and weight-length relationship and condition factor were calculated seperately for both infected and non-infected fish. The only marked difference was observed in value b between infected (2.745) and non-infected (3.014) fish.

Total ammonia nitrogen excretion rates were measured in Black Sea turbot (averaging 88.8 g) to compare the protein quality of prawns, the natural food of turbot, with that of the protein source commonly used in the feed industry, i.e. anchovy meal. A severe neurologic syndrome accompained by intense neuronal pigmentation was described in sheep exposed to Asphodelus aestivus in Turkey. The clinical signs were similar in all the sheep affected, and the condition was usually characterized by progressive paresis, ataxia and convulsion. At necropsy, yellowish-brown discoloration in the brain and spinal cord were consistently seen. A microscopical examination revealed abundant yellowish-brown pigment granules in the cytoplasm of the larger neurons. Similar pigment granules were also observed in extraneuronal tissues. Aphidophagus coccinellid (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) species were determined in cultivated and uncultivated fields in Kahramanmaraş. Furthermore, aphid species preyed upon by each coccinellid species were also specified. Adult coccinellids observed feeding on the aphid species were collected by suction tube while immature stages were collected with their preys and cultivated in order to obtain adults. Field and laboratory investigations on the ecology, reproduction and behavior of Spermophilus citellus and Spermophilus xantophrymnus were performed over a period of 4 years. Both S. citellus and S. xanthophrymnus are diurnal species and occupy semiarid steppe areas in Turkish Thrace and Anatolia, respectively. Two newly recorded Enochrus Thomson, 1859 (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) species for the Turkish fauna, E. (E.) melanocephalus (Olivier, 1792) and E. (L.) fuscipennis (Thomson, 1884), are described, and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented. A key to Turkish Enochrus species is provided and E. (L.) segmentinotatus treated under the "bicolor species complex".

Some intraspecific and interspecific behaviours in Krüper's Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi) populations were observed in Antalya province, southern Turkey. An account of their endemic distribution in Anatolia on the one hand, and the lack of sufficient data on the other, gave rise to the need for such a study. The breeding behaviour in the populations is observed, particularly in the BÜK (Lütfi Büyük Yıldırım research forest) and ELMALI Cedar research forests. The results are given in 2 parts as observed behaviours throughout a year and breeding period, which are mating, nesting, brooding, parental care and rearing and territorial behaviours.

Aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) Of Kahramanmaraş Province, Turkey, Mahmut Murat Aslan, Nedi̇m Uygun

This study aimed to identify 68 aphid species and subspecies in Kahramanmaraş from 1998 to 2001. It was found that these species and subspecies were from 35 genera and the subfamilies Aphidinae, Chaitophorinae, Lachninae, Myzocallidinae, Pemphiginae and Pterocommatinae (Aphididae: Aphidoidea). Sixty-eight species, belonging to the tribes Aphidini-Aphidina, Aphidini-Rhopalosiphina, Macrosiphini, Chaitophorini, Cinarini, Lachnini, Myzocallidini, Eriosomatini, Fordini, Pemphigini and Pterocommatini, were examined. Aphis acetosae L., Aphis fabae mordvilkoi Borner and Janich, Cinara cupressi (Buckton) and Nurudea meitanensis (Tsai and Tang) are reported for the first time from Turkey.

Two newly recorded Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 species/subspecies for the Turkish fauna, Helophorus (Atracthelophorus) shatrovskyi Angus, 1985 and H. (A.) leontis dixoni Angus, 1987, are compared against Turkish specimens (private collection). A list of subgenus Atracthelophorus species known from Turkey and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented. The ecology of each examined species is discussed.

A new species of Exeurytoma Burks, 1971 (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Eurytomidae) from Eastern Anatolia is described. Morphologies and systematics of 2 Turkish species, E. anatolica Çam, 1998 from Tokat and E. kebanensis n.sp. from Keban, Elazığ, and from Ömerli, Mardin were studied. Their diagnostic characteristics were photographed using a scanning electron microscope and some of them are illustrated as seen under a stereoscopic microscope by camera lucida. An identification key for the species of Exeurytoma is provided.

A Preliminary Survey Of Testudo Graeca Linnaeus 1758 Specimens From Central Anatolia, Turkey, Oğuz Türkozan, Kurtuluş Olgun, John Wilkinson, Leigh Gillett, John Spence

Sixteen specimens of Testudo graeca Linnaeus 1758 from 2 adjacent localities (Meke and Acıgöl) in Central Anatolia were measured. Morphological characters standardised for straight carapace length (SCL) were compared with original raw values from Testudo populations from Aegean and south-eastern Turkey. The post-ANOVA pairwise analysis (Tukey's) across all groups verified sexual dimorphism in the Central Anatolian populations in terms of anal suture length (P < 0.05) and plastron width 2 (P < 0.05). Discriminant analysis based on standardised values provided 89.3% and 92.6% correct classification among males and females, respectively. The difference was clearer between the Aegean and Central Anatolian populations, with a more domed carapace (CH) in the males and shorter plastron length (PL) and plastron width 2 (PW2) in the females of the Aegean population in comparison with the Central Anatolian population.

In order to determine the macrobenthic invertebrate fauna of Lake Eğrigöl, located at 2000 m in the central Taurus Mountains, 4 field studies were conducted between June and September, 2000, and June and September, 2001. The specimens were obtained by collection of mud samples using an Ekman-Birge grab and by sifting with a fine 500 µm sieve, and were preserved in 4% formaldehyde solution. Additional samplings were also performed from the shore with hand nets with a mesh size of 180 µm. Growth; length-weight, standard-, fork-, and total length relationships; age composition; sex ratios; age at first maturity; and fecundity of the himri, Barbus luteus, from different sites along the middle reaches of the Euphrates River were investigated. Von Bertalanffy's growth models were L_t = 54.71 (1-e^{0.110 (t+0.163)}), W_t = 1252.833 (1-e^{0.127 (t+1.825)})^{2.454} in males, and L_t = 56.93 (1-e^{0.105 (t+0.377)}), W_t = 1395.363 (1-e^{0.107 (t-1.81)})^{2.545} in females. Isometric growth was identified from length-weight relationships. Younger age groups dominated the catches, with identifiable ages ranged from II to VII years. Vipera eriwanensis (Reuss, 1933), known only from the localities of the eastern Aras River in Turkey, was morphologically examined and compared with the related species on the basis of one additional specimen from Gavur mountain (province Gümüşhane), situated outside the known localities. This information changed our knowledge of the total distribution of V. eriwanensis, clearly showing that this taxon has expanded its range at least 210 km to the west in eastern Turkey. In the ten years since wolves (Canis lupus) were restored to Yellowstone National Park (YNP), elk (Cervus elaphus) numbers have substantially decreased. The northern range elk herd is the largest elk herd in Yellowstone, and constitutes the majority of the park’s elk population. During 1994–2005, early winter counts of northern Yellowstone elk decreased from 19,045 to 9,545. Also, during winters 2000–2004, calf:cow ratios declined from 29:100 to 12:100, and were among the lowest recorded during the past several decades. Though many factors (e.g., predation, hunting, and drought) likely contributed to this decreasing abundance and low recruitment, …

A long-existing system of wolves (Canis lupus), muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), and arctic hares (Lepus arcticus) in a 2600 km² area of Canada’s High Arctic (80° N latitude) began collapsing in 1997 because of unusual adverse summer weather but recovered to a level at which all three species were reproducing by 2004. Recovery of wolf presence and reproduction appeared to be more dependent on muskox increase than on hare increase.

Composition, abundance, distribution, and diversity of oribatid mite communities were investigated at five study areas in Eastern Mongolia. A total of 88 species of oribatid mites were recorded from the studied areas. The largest number of species (51 spp.) was found in the habitats of river valleys, while the plain steppe which covers the largest area contained the lowest species richness (24 spp.). Three other sub-regions with similar landscape types show approximately the same species richness (39 to 45 spp.), although they are located relatively far from each other. Recently, the protostrongylid nematode Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei has been reported in a new host species, thinhorn sheep (Ovis dalli). For the first time, we completed the life cycle of P. odocoilei in three Stone’s sheep (O. dalli stonei) and two thinhorn hybrids (O. dalli stonei × O. dalli dalli), each infected with 200 third-stage larvae from slugs (Deroceras laeve). Recently, there have been several confirmed records of carnivores that were once extirpated from Nebraska. In our study, we present new data for five species that recently were documented in Nebraska: Lynx canadensis, Ursus americanus, Canis lupus, Puma concolor, and Lontra canadensis. Seventeen specimens of the rare Yucatán vesper mouse, Otonyctomys hatti, are now known from Belize, Guatemala, and the Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. We herein report a second specimen of O. hatti, from Belize, extending the known geographic range of the species 95 km to the southeast in the country. This is the first location at which O. hatti has been taken sympatrically with the Central American vesper mouse, Nyctomys sumichrasti. The livers and lungs of 5596 sheep (443 local, 473 Romanian and 4680 Australian) slaughtered in Amman Central Abattoir during November-December 1999 were examined in routine meat inspection procedures for helminths. Dictyocaulus filaria, hydatid cyst, Fasciola hepatica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum were recovered from the examined sheep with variable prevalences. Dicrocoelium dendriticum is reported from the livers of imported sheep in Jordan for the first time.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of orally administered oxytetracycline HCl (OTC) of 75 mg/kg body weight for 10 days on the immune response in sea bream (Sparus aurata L. 1758) using the nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test and erythrocyte and leucocyte counts. Administration of 75 mg/kg OTC for 10 days enhanced the non-specific immune response, and increased NBT (+) cell, total erythrocyte and leucocyte numbers in sea bream at 23 ± 1 ºC. The length and weight distribution of flounder (Platichthys flesus luscus Pallas, 1811) were 14.2-34.1 cm and 28.879-611.0 g, respectively. The samples were distributed between the 0 and VII age groups. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for flounder were L_t = 41.241[1-e^{-0.161(t+3.240)}] for females, L_t= 33.567[1-e^{-0.181(t+3.525)}] for males and L_t = 40.577[1-e^{-0.142(t+3.105)}] for the sexes combined. Reproduction took place from December to March but peaked in December. Two recruitment periods were determined for flounder: the first was January to July, and the second August to November. The proportions of recruitment in the first and second periods were 68.13% and 31.87%, respectively.

The sex distribution, growth in length and weight, growth rates and condition factors of Chub (Leuciscus cephalus (L., 1758)) in Karakaya dam lake were examined. Females made up 63.64% and males 36.37% (1.75:1) of 527 samples. The females and males were in the I-VI and I-V age groups, respectively. The reproductive properties of L. cephalus such as spawning period, age at attainment of maturity, egg diameter and ovarium weight were investigated.
