Effects Of Mad Honey On Blood Glucose And Lipid Levels In Rats With Streptozocin-Induced Diabetes, Nuray Öztaşan, Konca Altinkaynak, Fati̇h Akçay, Fatma Göçer, Şenol Dane
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study investigated whether mad honey affects blood glucose and lipid levels in experimental animals. It was found that mad honey caused significant decreases in blood glucose and lipid levels in animals with streptozocin-induced diabetes mellitus (n = 10) and controls (n = 10). These decreases may be due to grayanotoxins in the mad honey causing the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas to secrete insulin by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system or M_{2}-muscarinic receptors.

Effects Of Urea Or Urea Plus Molasses Supplementation To Silages With Different Sorghum Varieties Harvested At The Milk Stage On The Quality And In Vitro Dry Matter Digestibility Of Silages, Bi̇lal Keski̇n, İ. Hakki Yilmaz, M. Aki̇f Karsli, Hüseyi̇n Nursoy
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 0.5% urea and 0.5% urea plus 4% molasses (on weight basis) addition to sorghum silages ensiled using 4 sorghum varieties (Grass II, Grazer, Gözde, and P-988) harvested at the milk stage. Plant materials were ensiled in 1-kg jars and the chemical composition, pH, organic acids, in vitro digestibility (IVDMD) and digestible dry matter yield (DDMY) of the silages were determined. Addition of urea and urea plus molasses to silages increased the crude protein ratio significantly (P < 0.01). However, the addition of urea plus molasses significantly decreased the neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents of the silages. Additives significantly increased the pH values of the silages. The addition of urea and urea plus molasses to silages generally did not affect acetic or propionic acid content; however, the butyric acid content of the urea and urea plus molasses groups was higher than that of the control groups. IVDMD of all sorghum varieties decreased with the addition of urea and urea plus molasses. Additives did not affect DDMY. In conclusion, the addition of 0.5% urea and 0.5% urea plus 4% molasses to sorghum silages, harvested at the milk stage, improved the CP content of the silages, but they had no positive effect on silage quality, IVDMD or DDMY.

Concentrations Of Some Minerals In Cows With Retained Placenta And Abortion, Yaşar Akar, Hami̇t Yildiz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between blood levels of Ca, Zn, Mg, K, and Na and the occurrence of retained placenta and abortion in cows. Serum samples from 34 cows were analyzed (18 with retained placenta, 10 without retained placenta (control), and 6 that had aborted). Ca and Zn levels in cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than those in the control group. The serum Zn levels of aborted cows were higher (P < 0.001) than those of cows with retained placenta. Cows in the control group and those with retained placenta were divided into subgroups based on age (3, 4-6, 7-9 years old), type of parturition (normal, dystocia), and sex of calves (male, female). The serum Ca concentration of 3-year-old cows with retained placenta was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of those 7-9 years old. It is concluded that lower serum Ca and Zn levels in cows may induce placenta retention.

Fractal Dimensions In Red Blood Cells, Alina Rapa, Servilia Oancea, Dorina Creanga
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
We studied the erythrocyte aggregability for different animals using fractal analysis. Red blood cell aggregation is an important component of whole blood viscosity and is the major cause of the non-Newtonian flow properties of blood. To understand the aggregation process many models have been proposed in the literature. Since aggregates formed by aggregation have a fractal structure, mathematical descriptions of their irregular structure can be obtained using fractal geometry. For this purpose, blood samples were prepared from cows, sheep, rabbits, roosters, horses and humans by diluting 1:200 and mixing for 3 min in adequate reactives. A Turk room, microscope system …

Effects Of Salinity On The Osmoregulatory Functions Of The Gills In Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Yusuf Güner, Osman Özden, Haşmet Çağirgan, Muhammet Altunok, Volkan Kizak
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Changes in branchial Na^+-K^+-ATPase activity, and the number and size of chloride cells resulting from the transfer of fish into seawater were investigated in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (22.03 -+ 0.91 g), which were transferred to full strength seawater (36‰) directly and for 14 days. Whole mortality occurred when the tilapia were transferred into seawater directly. That is, no acclimation was allowed. Branchial chloride cell numbers decreased after seawater exposure, whereas a gradual increase was observed in chloride cell sizes. However, the chloride cells of seawater-adapted individuals showed a 2-fold increase in size (P < 0.05). Initially 5‰ and 10‰ salinity resulted in lowered branchial Na^+-K^+-ATPase activity but then this activity increased and the highest activity was at 25‰ salinity (P < 0.01). This study demonstrated the effects of high salinity through direct and gradual acclimations on branchial Na^+-K^+-ATPase activity and chloride cell abundance.

This experiment was conducted to determine the feasibility of cuttlefish backbone as a new xenograft in the treatment of bone defects and its therapeutic effectiveness. Following the administration of general anaesthesia to 20 one-year-old male New Zealand rabbits, traumatic defective areas (5 mm in diameter) were experimentally induced at the proximal and distal metaphyses of both femurs. These defective areas (n = 80) were randomly assigned to be filled with cuttlefish backbone, spongious bovine graft (SBG), tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and demineralised bone matrix (DBM) in a complete randomised design. At the end of the 30-day postoperative experimental period, bone defects …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The present study was performed to investigate the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in dogs, and to evaluate protrusive changes in the mitral valve by echocardiographic examination. Thirty-five dogs were examined, including those observed clinically normal, and animals with suspected cardiac disease displaying lethargy, coughing, dyspnea, exercise intolerance, or syncope. The echocardiographic examination revealed 19 (54.2%) of the dogs to have MVP, whereas 16 (45.7%) had a normal mitral valve. It was concluded that the degree of protrusion of the mitral valve in systole differs in individual dogs with mitral prolapse. MVP, determined to be widespread in dogs, can …

Sturgeons are the most important fish in the Caspian Sea, but there are only a few reports about their parasite communities in the southern part of this sea. In this study, 102 samples of 3 sturgeon species, namely Acipenser gueldenstaedti (n = 78), A. nudiventris (n = 18) and Huso huso (n = 6), were caught from 3 geographical locations in the southwest of the Caspian Sea (Guilan Province, Iran) from April 1999 to February 2001. Eight worm species including 3 nematodes [Cucullanus sphaerocephalus, Eustrongylides excisus (L.) and Anisakis sp. (L.)], 1 cestode (Eubothrium acipenserinum), 2 acanthocephalans (Leptorhynchoides plagicephalus and …

The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition, digestibility, in situ N kinetics, and by-pass protein contents of 4 different common vetch varieties grown under irrigation. Four different common vetch varieties (Emir 20/1, Nilüfer 17/1, 28/1, and Uludağ 31/4) with different characteristics were selected. The vetch plots were planted on June 15 2002 and each variety was randomly assigned to 3 replications. The vetches were harvested by hand using a clipper on September 11. All samples were analyzed for dry matter (DM), ash, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent …

Hydatidosis, caused by hydatid cysts, is a widespread and hazardous disease in humans and animals worldwide. The disease is very common in Turkey, causing serious economic losses. In this study, the seroprevalence of hydatidosis was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescence antibody technique (IFAT). A total of 597 serum samples were collected from cattle of various breeds and ages in 8 provinces in Eastern Turkey. Partially purified cyst fluid antigen from sheep hydatid cyst fluid was used as antigen in ELISA and whole protoscolex antigens were used in IFAT. The results showed that 63.3% and 54.9% of …
