Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate environmental factors affecting milk yield and fertility traits of Simmental cows raised at the Kazova state farm and the phenotypic correlation between these traits from 1473 records between 1992 and 2001. The least square means of 305-days milk yield, lactation duration, dry period, service period, calving interval, gestation length and number of inseminations per conception (NIPC) were 4700 kg, 300 days, 81 days, 94 days, 379 days, 283.6 days and 1.76, respectively. The effect of calving year on milk yield and fertility traits was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The effect of calving age on gestation length and milk yield was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). The effect of calving season on gestation length, 305-days milk yield and NIPC was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). Birth type did not significantly affect any traits, except for gestation length. The phenotypic correlations between 305-days milk yield and lactation duration (0.39), between NIPC and service period (0.81), between NIPC and calving interval (0.77), between calving interval and service period (0.96) and between calving interval and gestation length (0.12) were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Correlations between milk yield and fertility traits (0.09-0.77) were statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05), except for gestation length. These results are acceptable and it can be concluded that Simmental cattle are raised successfully on this farm and under Turkish conditions.

Elvers were collected using trap-nets, drift nets, hand scoop nets and electrofishing equipment. Examination indicated that the highest yield was obtained using hand scoop nets (P < 0.05) and electrofishing equipment. Elvers entered Gözlen Creek between February and July. A total of 214 specimens entering the creek were examined and 3 different groups were established according to their morphological characteristics: average weight (W) group I; 0.166 ± 0.007 g, group II; 0.392 ± 0.02 g, group III; 0.800 ± 0.06 g and average total length (L) group I; 56.16 ± 0.06 mm; group II; 64.39 ± 0.11 mm and group III; 82.02 ± 0.18 mm. The length-weight relation of elvers was calculated using regression analysis and was determined as follows: group I; W = 0.0020*L^{2.5327}, group II; W = 0.0015*L^{2.9516}, and group III; W = 0.0023*L^{2.7090}. The condition factor (C) was determined as 0.209 ± 0.009 for group I; 0.154 ± 0.004 for group II and 0.251 ± 0.009 for group III.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A tumor structure, 2 x 2.5 x 0.7 cm in size, was observed on the top of a goldfish’s (Carassius auratus) head. On histopathological examination of the tumor tissue, palisadic fusiform smooth muscle cells constituting a focal whirling pattern were seen. No mitosis was observed in the cells. In conclusion, the conventional staining results suggested that the tumor was leiomyoma.

The effect of a bacteriocin-producing strain, Lactobacillus sakei Lb706, on the behavior of Listeria monocytogenes in rainbow trout fillets stored under vacuum at 4 ºC for 14 days and at 10 ºC for 5 days was investigated. At 4 ºC, growth of L. monocytogenes was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05) by L. sakei Lb706 during 10 days of storage while bacteriocin-negative Lb706-B did not affect the growth of L. monocytogenes during 14 days of storage. In the presence of the sakacin A-producing strain of L. sakei (Lb706), the growth of L. monocytogenes was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05) in the first 3 days of storage at 10 ºC, after which its count increased to 10^7 CFU/g. The control group and the group containing L. sakei Lb706-B showed similar growth patterns of L. monocytogenes. Significant increases (P < 0.05) were observed in all groups in terms of psychrotrophic bacteria counts. No significant (P > 0.05) changes in pH values during storage at 4 ºC and 10 ºC were determined. Consequently, the results of the present study showed that L. sakei Lb706 can be used as a protective culture in freshwater reared rainbow trout, especially for preventing possible contaminations of Gram-positive food-borne pathogenic bacteria such as L. …

The results of antigenic characterization of canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2) isolated from the feces of 60 dogs with hemorrhagic enteritis are reported. Antigenic characterization was carried out by comparing the reactivity pattern of 4 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to CPV2 in the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. CPV2 was detected in 21 out of 60 dogs (35%) and antigenic typing was able to be performed for only 16 dogs with >=1:8 titers. Nine samples were characterized as CPV2a and 7 as CPV2b, indicating that the CPV2a variant was more common than CPV2b in dog populations in Bursa province in Turkey.

The Impacts Of Beef Prices And Vat On Chicken Meat Consumption: A Partial Equilibrium Approach, Hali̇l Fi̇dan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study examines the impact of beef prices and taxes on chicken meat consumption in Turkey. The model presents a partial equilibrium approach for beef prices and chicken meat consumption in Turkey that can be used for simulation and forecasting. The structure of the model follows the vertical chain of the chicken meat sector, allowing equations for the supply, demand and net trade of chicken meat. The price, income, cross-price and tax elasticities of chicken meat were estimated to determine the impacts of beef prices and VAT. According to the analysis, for slaughtered chicken, the price elasticity was 0.37, the …
