Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of formic acid, molasses, and microbial inoculant (homofermentative lactic acid bacteria) as silage additives on silage quality and ruminal fermentation characteristics. Silages with or without formic acid (0.5%), molasses (5%), or microbial inoculant (10 g/t) were fed to ruminally cannulated, 1.5 year-old Kıvırcık x Morkaraman sheep. Silage treated with molasses had significantly greater DM and CP concentrations compared with other groups (P < 0.05). pH values did not significantly differ among treatments (P > 0.05). Lactic acid concentrations were significantly higher in silages treated with enzyme or molasses compared with others (P < 0.05). While acetic acid concentration was the highest in silage treated with acid, it was the lowest in silage treated with molasses (P < 0.05). Silage NH_{3}-N concentration was the highest in silage treated with molasses, but the lowest in silage treated with acid (P < 0.05). Post-feeding ruminal total organic acid concentrations were significantly greater in sheep fed silages with additive than the control (P < 0.05). While percentages of acetic acid were greater, percentages of butyric acids were less in the rumen fluid of sheep fed silage without additive compared with the rumen fluid of sheep fed silage treated with silage additives. However, percentages of propionic acid did not differ among treatments.

Prediction Of Dry Matter Intake And Dry Matter Digestibilities Of Some Forages Using The Gas Production Technique In Sheep, Adem Kamalak, Önder Canbolat, Yavuz Gürbüz, Osman Ozay
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Wheat straw, barley straw, alfalfa hay, alfalfa silage and maize silage were offered ad libitum to three male sheep, and daily dry matter intake (DMI) and apparent dry matter digestibility (DMD) were measured. Samples of forages were incubated with rumen fluid to determine gas production. Gas productions were measured at 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96, and gas production constants (a, b, c,) were described using the equation y = a + b (1 - e-^{ct}). Gas production at all incubation times and gas production constants (c, b and a+b) were significantly (P < 0.001) correlated to DMD or DMI. Although the gas production constant c explained 74% of the variation of DMD, the gas production constant b explained 92% of the variation of DMD. The gas production constants c and (a+b) in combination explained 96% of the variation of DMD. The gas production constants b and c alone explained 70% and 78% of the variation of DMI respectively. The gas production constants in combination explained 84-90% of the variation of DMI. It was concluded that the accuracy of predicting DMD or DMI can be increased when gas production constants are used in combination, and the in vitro gas production technique has good potentiality to predict DMD and DMI.

Effects Of Egg Weight And Length Of Storage Period On Hatchability And Subsequent Laying Performance Of Quail, Meti̇n Petek, Hasan Başpinar, M. Mustafa Oğan, Faruk Balci
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hatching egg weight and length of egg storage period on hatchability and subsequent laying performance of quails. Eggs were collected from a quail flock (Coturnix coturnix Pharaoh) aged 17 weeks and classified into 4 groups on the basis of storage period 1, 3, 5, or 7 d. Prior to egg storage, the eggs in each group were further divided into egg weight treatment (small: 12.51 g). Hatchability of total and fertile eggs was affected significantly by hatching egg weight (P < 0.05) but was not affected significantly by the length of egg storage period. There was a decrease in egg production associated with increase in hatching egg weight. Egg production of quails hatched from stored eggs for 3 days was greater than the other groups. There was a significant interaction between hatching egg weight and length of egg storage for egg production. It was concluded that medium eggs can be hatched satisfactorily after 3 days storage for optimum egg production in quails.

The ultrastructure of the ovarian follicle and the levels of the ovarian 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHC), estradiol-17\beta (E_{2}), 17\alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17\alpha-OHP), and progesterone (P) were studied during cortical alveoli, vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation in Chalcalburnus tarichi. The microvilli began to form on the oocyte surface during cortical alveoli phase and during vitellogenesis, came into contact in the pore canals of the zona radiata with microvilli formed from granulosa cells. While the special thecal cells posses specific organelles, which are characteristic of steroid-producing cells, namely, mitochondria with tubular cristae, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets, the granulosa cells contain organelles typical for protein-secreting cells. …

Sensible And Latent Heat Productions From Broilers In Laboratory Conditions, Levent Genç, Kenneth M. Portier
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Heat production from chickens and other resources inside the broiler house is a major problem for the broiler industry. Temperature and relative humidity (RH) as well as airflow and broiler physiology directly affect heat production in broiler houses. This study was carried out under laboratory conditions to determine heat production for male broilers. In the laboratory experiment, 108 broilers were used to determine the influence of different temperature-humidity combinations on the physiological response of 2.0 to 2.3 kg broilers during the 40 min test. In the laboratory experiment, three dry bulb (DB) temperatures (25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C) …

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has a thermogenic function in animals. Mitochondrial uncoupling protein (UCP) is responsible for the thermogenic function in BAT cells. Vitamin A affects proliferation and differentiation in cells. Retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, stimulates the expression of the UCP gene, which is found in BAT cells. Retinoic acid performs its function regardless of differentiation stage of BAT cells. It is known that vitamin A is teratogenic at therapeutic doses in pregnancy. In this study, effects of retinyl palmitate applied in a therapeutic dose were examined in mice fetal BAT cells. Tissue samples were subjected to …
