Massive Cryptosporidium Parvum Infection Associated With An Outbreak Of Diarrhoea In Neonatal Goat Kids, Ferda Sevi̇nç, Ati̇lla Şi̇mşek, Uğur Uslu

There was a massive outbreak of watery diarrhoea in kids aged 5 to 15 days in a goat herd in Gönen district of Isparta province in Turkey in May 2003. The presence of Cryptosporidium parvum was investigated in the faeces of 130 diarrhoeic kids and 3 dead kids in this herd. All of the faecal samples were also examined for rotavirus and coronavirus. C. parvum were detected in all of the faecal specimens. Coronavirus and rotavirus were not detected in any of the animals.

The aims of this study were the isolation of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale from poultry and serotyping of the isolates and field sera by agar gel precipitation (AGP) test. For the isolation 257 chickens and 214 turkeys were used and for the AGP test 333 chickens and 250 turkeys were used. O. rhinotracheale was isolated from the sinus discharge of 3 broiler breeders at 37, 42 and 46 weeks of age. The faecal carriage rate of Listeria monocytogenes in stray dogs in Bursa province, Turkey, was determined from 82 faecal samples by bacteriological methods. L. monocytogenes was isolated from only one (1.22%) of the samples examined. The isolate was serotyped as 1/2b. It was concluded that stray dogs could be a reservoir of the organism as well as a source of human listeriosis in Turkey. This is the first report on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from a dog in this country.

Vaccine-associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) with multiple recurrences was diagnosed in the specimens at the injection site of a Turkish Van cat that had been vaccinated four months previously. The original tumor consisted of two compartments each 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm in diameter. It recurred five times following surgery and local recurrences necessitated five more radical resections within two years. Euthanasia was performed when pleural effusion developed, but evidence of metastatic disease was not observed. Most migrating birds accumulate lipid stores as their primary source of energy for fueling long distance flights. Lipid stores of birds during migration are composed of mostly unsaturated fatty acids; whether such a fatty acid composition enhances exercise performance of birds is unknown. We tested this hypothesis by measuring metabolic rate at rest and during intense exercise in two groups of red-eyed vireos, a long-distance migratory passerine, fed either a diet containing 82% unsaturated fat (82%U), or one containing 58% unsaturated fat (58%U). Samples were collected monthly from 10 different stations between April, 1993, and March, 1994, in order to determine the Chironomidae fauna of Gümüldür Stream in İzmir, Turkey. Ten species were found in the stream as determined from qualitative analyses of the samples. Of these, 5 species belong to the subfamily Orthocladiinae and the remaining 5 belong to the subfamily Chironominae. This is the first study reporting the existence of these species in Gümüldür Stream.

Taxonomical states and the distribution of 40 Telescopus fallax specimens collected from various regions of Turkey over the past 35 years were evaluated. Information relating to a female Vipera barani and its 2 male juveniles, which were collected 35 km south of the provincial capital Adapazarı is presented. Biological information regarding the latter species is provided for the first time.

Specimens of Vipera eriwanensis and Vipera kaznakovi collected from northeastern Anatolia were examined in terms of morphological characters and compared with the relevant references. The distribution ranges of Vipera eriwanensis and Vipera kaznakovi were extended in Turkey by collecting specimens from new localities.

The samples were collected from 10 stations from September 2002 to October 2003 with the purpose of determining the Oligochaete fauna of Aksu Stream (Antalya). Seventeen species of Oligochaeta were recorded, consisting of 7 species from the family Tubificidae, and 10 species from Naididae. All of them are reported from Aksu Stream for the first time.

Xylophagous insects, Bostrychidae, Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Curculionidae and Scolytidae (Coleoptera), on fig trees in Aydın province, Turkey, were investigated in 2000 and 2001. Sixteen species of Coleoptera were collected, of which 8 are new records as fig pests in Turkey: Anthaxia cichorii Olivier, Agrilus roscidus Kiesenwetter, Acmaeodera (s.str.) flavolineata Laporte and Gory (Buprestidae), Stenopterus flavicornis Küster (Cerambycidae), Xyloperthella picea Olivier, Xylonites praeustus Germar, Scobicia chevrieri Villa (Bostrychidae) and Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood (Scolytidae). The histochemical and ultrastructural effects of cadmium (Cd) on the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles of male mice were investigated. Two doses of Cd (0.1 and 1.0 x 10^{-4} M) were injected into the mice. The animals were killed at the end of 48 h and their EDL muscles excised. Three types of fibers (I, IIA and IIB) were described by the succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) method in the control groups. The mitochondrial and sarcotubular contents of the fibers were different. We tested the hypothesis that the physical and chemical processes acting in sea grass habitats of the lower Chesapeake Bay are spatially structured and that dissolved elemental chemistry of sea grass-habitat surface waters have their own unique identity. We sampled surface waters from July to September 2001 in five sea grass habitats of the lower bay: Potomac, Rappahannock, York, Island (Tangier-Bloodsworth), and Eastern Shore. Dissolved Mg, Mn, Sr, and Ba concentrations were measured by sector field inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Selective tidal stream transport is hypothesized as a dominant mechanism by which larvae of marine animals move through estuarine openings. For larvae moving from the shelf to estuarine habitats, selective tidal stream transport proposes that larvae are higher in the water column during flood tide and lower in the water column during ebb tide. Equine influenza is a cause of epizootic respiratory disease of the equine. The detection of equine influenza virus using real-time Light Cycler reverse transcription (RT)-PCR technology was evaluated over two influenza seasons with the analysis of 171 samples submitted for viral respiratory disease. Increased sensitivity was found in overall viral detection with this system compared to Directigen Flu A and virus isolation, which were 40% and 23%, respectively, that of the RT-PCR. Fearfulness reaction was examined using tonic immobility (TI) response and differential leucocyte counts as physiological indicators of distress from sire and dam brown layer lines. The study was performed on 20 male and 131 female chickens from the sire line and 24 male and 116 female chickens from the dam line. The duration of TI, the time interval until the bird righted itself, and the number of inductions (15 s periods of restraint) necessary to attain TI were recorded. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Salmonella serogroups in chicken meat. A total of 315 skins from the wing part of chicken carcasses were collected from 8 chicken carcass retailers. Salmonella isolation was performed as described in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual of the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The Effects Of Cadmium On Levels Of Glucose In Serum And Glycogen Reserves In The Liver And Muscle Tissues Of Cyprinus Carpio (L., 1758), Bedi̇i̇ Ci̇ci̇k, Kenan Engi̇n

The common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) was exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mgl^{-1}) for 10 days. The levels of serum glucose and glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were measured both in fish exposed and not exposed to Cd. The levels of glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in fish exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd compared with the levels measured in the control groups. The decrease in glycogen levels in the liver and muscle tissues under the highest metal concentration (1.0 mgl^{-1}) were 24% and 29%, respectively. The blood serum glucose levels of fish exposed to Cd were significantly (P < 0.05) increased compared with the levels measured in the control groups. This increase was correlated with the increase in water Cd concentrations.

Effects Of Heavy Metal Accumulation On The 96-H Lc_50 Values In Tench Tinca Tinca L., 1758, Syed Lal Shah, Ahmet Altindağ

The effects of already accumulated heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb) in the body of tench on the 96-h LC_50 values of the respective heavy metals were studied. The body concentration of mercury, cadmium and lead was 0.011, 0.32 and 1.59 mg/g respectively, and their 96-h LC_50 values were 1.0, 6.5 and 300.0, ppm, respectively. The general accumulation order of heavy metals and their respective 96-h LC_50 values were Hg< Cd< Pb. It was observed that the fish with lowest body concentration of heavy metal showed the lowest 96-h LC_50 value of the respective heavy metal and vice versa. This close relationship showed that the previous body accumulation of heavy metals has a direct effect on the 96-h LC_50 values of the respective heavy metals and the susceptibility of fish.
