A Comparison Between Medetomidine-Ketamine And Xylazine-Ketamine Anaesthesia In Rabbits, Nuh Kiliç

The anaesthetic and cardiopulmonary effects of medetomidine-ketamine (MK) and xylazine-ketamine (XK) combinations were compared in rabbits. A total of 18 rabbits were randomly assigned to 2 different groups. The rabbits in the MK group (n = 9) were given 0.25 mg/kg of medetomidine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine intramuscularly. The XK group was given 4 mg/kg of xylazine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine via the same route. This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of bone injection gun assisted intraosseous administration of contrast media as an alternative to the intravenous route for urography. Intravenous urographies were obtained in 6 rabbits. Urographic examinations by the intraosseous route were performed in the same animals 48 h later. After adequate anesthesia, the retroauricular vein was punctured for intravenous injection and a bone injection gun was used for intraosseous injections to the distal one-third of the rabbit femur. Crude and excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Fasciola hepatica were subjected to SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis in order to identify protein bands that would enable the specific and sensitive immunodiagnosis of sheep. Sera from 20 sheep with natural infections of F. hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Cyst hydatid, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Trichostrongylidae, Paramphistomum spp., and Trichuris spp. and the same number of sera naturally infected with the same helminths without F. hepatica were tested using Western blotting, and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. Since the total of 150,000 doses of attenuated cell culture vaccine doses produced anually in Turkey does not meet the requirements of the country, by reducing the number of vaccine cells in a single dose, an increased number of vaccine doses was obtained for cattle, and doses consisting of different numbers of vaccine cells were tested according to their protective efficiency against tropical theileriosis in cattle. Some Growth Characteristics Of The Brown Trout Salmo Trutta Macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) In Tekederesi (Erzurum), Esat Mahmut Kocaman, Aslan Yusuf Yüksel, Muhammed Atamanalp

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Some growth properties of the brown trout Salmo trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) in Tekederesi, which is a branch feeding the Karasu River, were investigated. The age composition of the population varied between I and V. The population was 64.81% female and 35.19% male and the differences between the sexes were statistcally significant (P < 0.05). The mean fork length and mean body weight of the 54 individuals examined were 16.58 cm and 53.15 g, respectively. The differences between the sexes according to age groups for fork length and total weight were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The specific and relative growth for length and weight were maximum at the second age. The length-weight relationship of the population was calculated by the least squares method and the logarithmic equation was found to be Log W = -1.4684 + 2.590 Log FL (fork length). …

The Effect Of Grower Diet Protein Level On The Performance And Some Slaughtering Characteristics Of Sex-Separated And Mixed- Sex Broilers, Veysel Ayhan, Mehmet Bozkurt, Kami̇l Küçükyilmaz

This trial examined 1350 sex-separated broilers at 24 days of age. Chicks were fed standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isocaloric grower diets (16.84%, 18.00% and 19.46% crude protein, respectively) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 24 to 45 of the experimental period. While the body weights of sex-separated and mixed-sex broilers were similar, diet protein level and sex had a significant effect on the body weight of broilers during the experimental period (P < 0.01). Male broilers consumed more feed and had better feed conversion than females (P < 0.01). However, separate sex rearing had no significant effect on feed consumption or feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). The major aim of this study was to analyze the meat cost per kg live weight and marketing margins of cattle fattening farms in Erzurum province in the 2001 production period. Data were collected from 130 cattle fattening farms and different associations. Cattle fattening farms were classified according to their size into 3 groups using stratified random sampling. In this study, 3484 milk yield records (1520 first, 1206 second and 758 third lactations) obtained from 1816 cows born between 1990 and 1997 in the Holstein-Friesian herd of Ceylanpınar State Farm were used to estimate the heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between lactation milk yields using an individual animal model and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. The effects of different nitrite doses (50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm NaNO_2) and starter culture (Lactobacillus plantarum + Staphylococcus carnosus, a commercial preparation) on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) were investigated. The initial inoculation of the L. monocytogenes was 10^4 cfu/g for each sucuk dough mix. The sex composition, age, length and body mass relationship, Von Bertalanffy growth equation and condition factor of 342 individuals were investigated to determine some population parameters of goldfish (Carassius auratus L., 1758) between June 1998 and May 1999 in Lake Eğirdir. Sex composition was 32.75 % females and 67.25 % males and the fish were 0-IV years old. The length-body mass relationship was W = 0.0210 L^{3,0598}, the Von Bertalanffy growth equation was Lt = 122.7 [1-e^{-0.033(t+3.74)}] and the average condition factor was 2.520 ± 0.012. In order to determine the Malacostraca fauna of water bodies in the Taurus Mountains, southern Anatolia, 2 field studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997. As a result, Asellus aquaticus (L. 1758), Gammarus balcanicus Schäferna 1922, Gammarus longipedis G.S. Karaman & Pinkster 1987 and Stygobromus ambulans (F. Müller 1846) were determined from the investigated area. All the determined taxa are recorded for the first time from these localities.

The objective of this study was to determine parasitoids attacking leafminers (Agromyzidae: Diptera) in Ankara province. Seven parasitoids species belonging to the Eulophidae (Chalcidoidea) were found. These species were Diglyphus iseae (Walker), D. chabrias (Walker), Neochyrsocharis formosa (Westwood), N. arvensis Graham, Pediobius acantha (Walker), Chrysocharis sp. and Hemiptarsenus sp. Of these, D. isaea, N. formosa and N. arvensis were found to be the most common parasitoids of leafminers. Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess), Chromatomyia horticola (Goureau) and Phytomyza lappae Goureau putatively appeared to be the host species. The morphology of the venom apparatus of the spider Agelena labyrinthica was studied using scanning electron microscopy. The venom apparatus, situated in the anterior of the prosoma, is composed of a pair of chelicerae and venom glands. Each chelicera consists of two parts, a stout basal segment covered by hair, and a movable articulated fang. There are regular, parallel fine grooves on the surface of the cheliceral fang. Through 10 monthly sampling, a total of 7434 water mites belonging to 24 species and 9 families from Lake Çapalı were caught and identified. Of these, Piona variabilis and Arrenurus batillifer are new records for the Turkish fauna. Besides the index of species diversity, frequency analysis and the ecological characters of the study area, constant, associated, euconstant, influent and accidental species were determined.

Cultivated and non-cultivated areas were surveyed between 1999 and 2000 for coccoid fauna in Ankara, Afyon, Burdur and Isparta provinces. Nineteen species from 11 genera belonging to Pseudococcidae were found. Among these Chaetococcus phragmitis (Marchal, 1909), Phenacoccus bicerarius Borchsenius, 1949, Phenacoccus evelinae Tereznikova, 1968, Puto pilosellae (Sulc, 1898), Puto superbus (Leonardi, 1907), Rhodania porifera Goux, 1935, and Spinococcus morrisoni (Kritchenko, 1935) were new records for Turkish fauna.

The morphometric measurements of 10 taxonomically important characters, and the coloration features of the 8 subspecies of Mertensiella luschani were investigated and statistical analyses were carried out. Male and female specimens of Brachypoda mutila and male specimens of Bandakia concreta collected from a seepage spring in West Anatolia are described. Their morphological features are compared with those of the most closely related species. Identification keys to the species known from the Palearctic of the genera Bandakia and Brachypoda are provided.

The herpetofauna of Bozdağ in western Anatolia was investigated. In the study area, 152 samples belonging to 22 species from 14 amphibian and reptile families were described. One of these species is an urodelan, 5 are anurans, 1 is a tortoise, 10 are lizards and 5 are snakes. A specimen of Eumeces schneideri was found at Bozdağ for the first time.

Edible species and their distribution in Turkey were studied. The absence of Helix pomatia, a species reported to occur in Turkey in resources in various disciplines, is mentioned, while 7 species of edible snails determined (Theba pisana, Eobania vermiculata, Cryptomphalus aspersus, Cantareus apertus, Helix asemnis, Helix cincta and Helix lucorum) are described in detail by means of morphology, distribution, systematical positions, and a key to the species is given. Additionally, problems about the future of snail harvesting in Turkey and standards to be applied are discussed.

Ecological traps occur where species are attracted to use a resource that exposes them to greater than normal risk of mortality or reproductive failure. We observed complete failure of Hooded Oriole (Icterus cucullatus) nests in streetlights in a south Texas suburb where use of such nest sites was relatively common. This is of concern as streetlights functioned essentially as traps: orioles built their nests within them but all these nests failed, evidently because the eggs were exposed to lethal temperatures. This report documents a year-around Wolf (Canis lupus) density of 18.2/100 km2 and a summer density of 30.8/100 km2, in a northeastern Minnesota Wolf pack. The previous record was a summer density of 14.1/100 km2, for a Wolf pack on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The stocking of size-graded catfish into production ponds should increase production efficiency, but grading large numbers of fish with existing technology is laborious. We evaluated the effectiveness of a mechanical grader recently developed at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) relative to that of box and sock graders and assessed injuries sustained by stocker channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus during grading. Three 0.25-acre ponds were stocked at 11,777 lb/acre. Initial total length (TL) ranged from 6.3 to 15.7 in, and initial weight of individuals ranged from 0.04 to 1.10 lb. The distribution of the Altamira oriole (Icterus gularis) in the United States is restricted to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of southernmost Texas. Our objective was to assess the current breeding status of this species at and near Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge (SANWR), a principal nesting area in the region. During each breeding season from 1997 to 1999, we attempted to find and monitor all Altamira oriole nests in and within 0.5 km of SANWR to determine annual breeding-pair abundance, annual nest-site distribution, and nest distribution among tree species. In this study, 212 Acanthobrama marmid Heckel, 1843 individuals were caught at monthly periods from Keban Dam Lake between January 1997 and December 1998 and transported live to the laboratory. After haematological analysis was carried out on the blood samples taken from their hearts, total lengths and weights were measured. The sex of the fish was identified and their ages were determined from the scales. The total amounts of erythrocytes, leucocytes, thrombocytes, haemoglobin and haematocrits and MCV, MCH and MCHC parameters were determined from blood samples. Bacteriological Investigation Of Udder Lobes Of Cows With Mastitis Slaughtered In The Elazığ Region, Hasan Basri̇ Gülcü, Hasan Basri̇ Ertaş

Bacteriological examinations were performed on 206 mammary tissue samples taken from 160 cows with mastitis in Elazığ. The isolates were identified as Staphylococcus aureus (39.04%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (17.81%), Actinomyces pyogenes (14.38%), Escherichia coli (8.9%), Streptococcus agalactiae (6.16%), Streptococcus uberis (4.11%), Streptococcus dysgalactiae (3.42%), Corynebacterium bovis (1.37%), Pasteurella haemolytica (1.37%) and Bacillus cereus (1.37%).
