A young dog was examined because of regurgitating at the time of weaning to solid food. The dog was thin, underweight and had a sparse hair coat and distended abdomen. The cervical oesophagus was palpable as a flaccid, air-filled tube in the neck. Cardiac murmurs were not detected on auscultation of the thorax. A test meal of dog food was given and the dog regurgitated masticated, nondigested food a few minutes after eating. A 1-year-old cat with a suspected abortion was brought to the clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. The cat was examined because of a reoccurrence of a bloody vaginal discharge. Failure to detect a foetus by ultrasonography and the presence of an anechoic zone in the uterus revealed that there had not an abortion. Since the anechoic zone was large, it was thought that a pharmacological approach would not be successful. Meningitis Associated With Brucella Abortus In An Aborted Bovine Foetus, Cengi̇z Çeti̇n, İ. Taci̇ Cangül, Mehmet Akan, Ebru Özel, Ahmet Akkoç

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the brain and other organs from an aborted bovine foetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. In addition, a serum sample from the aborting cow was examined serologically. A granulomatous inflammation, characterised by the infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells with some neutrophils and macrophages was observed in the meninges of the brain, liver and kidney. Brucella abortus biovar 1 was isolated in pure culture from the brain and other organs. The serum sample was positive for brucellosis. These findings indicate that Brucella abortus is a pathogen capable of inducing meningitis in bovine foetuses.

This study concerns an investigation of the growth properties of Sander lucioperca (L., 1758) living in Hirfanlı dam constructed on the Kızılırmak river. It was observed that 326 pikeperch (Sander lucioperca (L., 1758)) caught between August 1996 and July 1997 ranged between I and V years of age. The fork length and weight of the population were 105-529 mm and 12-1520 g. The length (L)-weight (W) relation and the condition factor were W = 0.00001049 L^{3.07} and 0.986, respectively.

The age determination method and its accuracy are the most important subjects for the evaluation of age-length-weight relations in fisheries biology, since estimates of survival, growth and mortality rates, analysis of year-classes, and recruitment all depend on age structure. Feeding Biology Of Silurus Glanis (L., 1758) Living In Hirfanlı Dam Lake, Ni̇hal Doğan Bora, Ali̇ Gül

Stomach contents and feeding features of Silurus glanis living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake were investigated. Recognizable organisms were found in the stomachs of 91 Silurus glanis out of 162 caught between September 1996 and August 1997. The stomach contents of Silurus glanis and their levels were as follows: Gammarus (21.87%), Odonata (19.79%), Sander lucioperca (19.79%), Tinca tinca (18.76%), Silurus glanis (1.04%) and Gastropoda (1.04%). In addition, it was noted that 1.04% of the organisms found in the stomachs of Silurus glanis were Homoptera and 2.08% were the parasite Platyhelminthes.

A 27.2 kb plasmid in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ELL23, a 32.7 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC5 and a 31.1 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC19 were found to determine exopolysaccharide production (Eps^+) and lactose fermentation (Lac^+) abilities at the end of conjugal transfer studies. Conjugal transfer frequencies (per donor cell) and stability rates of Lac^+/Eps^+ plasmids were determined as 1.0 x 10^{-2 }- 2.8 x 10^{-3} and 80-96%, respectively, after conjugal matings between the aggregative (Agg^+) wild type strains and Agg^+ recipient strain L. lactis subsp. lactis LLT40. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Y. enterocolitica and other Yersinia species in raw ground beef samples and to determine their potential virulence. For this purpose, 61 ground beef samples purchased from 15 different butcher's shops and 3 supermarkets in Aydın province in Turkey were examined between June 2000 and January 2001. A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

We investigated the effects of drop volume on the development of mouse presumptive zygotes to the completely hatched blastocyst stage. For this aim, we established 3 experimental groups. In the first group, we cultured hybrid presumptive zygotes to the hatched blastocyst stage in 10 presumptive zygotes per 5, 10, 20, 40 and 50 µl drops. Milk progesterone level is a good marker to evaluate the functional status of the corpus luteum in all farm animals. The present study was conducted to monitor changes in milk progesterone concentrations at the time of oestrus and post-mating for diagnosing early pregnancy in Anatolian water buffaloes. Twenty-one buffaloes reared at the Kocatepe Agricultural Research Institute, Afyon, Turkey, were used. The structural diversity of oligosaccharides found in glycoconjugates is enormous. This is due to the number of different ways in which sugar monomers may be linked to each other regarding linkage position, anomeric configuration, pyranosidic or furanosidic ring form and chain branching. It has been proposed that these factors contribute to the exquisite potential of oligosaccharides to establish a code system of biological information. The information contained in these structures is decoded by complementary sites present on carbohydrate binding proteins (lectins).

The Determination Of Microbial Flora, Water Activity And Chemical Analyses In Smoked, Canned Mussels (Mytilus Galloprovincialis, L.), Gülgün F. Ünal Şengör, Hani̇fe Kalafatoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Gün

This study reports the water activity, moisture, sodium chloride, pH, acidity, vinegar, total plate count, fecal coliform, coliform and Clostridium botulinum of canned mussels processed by 2 different smoking techniques. The results indicated that the average measured water activity was 0.971 ± 0.001 for liquid smoked canned mussel with curry sauce and 0.982 ± 0.001 for traditional smoked mussel. The moisture of samples varied between 69.440% for traditional smoked mussel and 76.35% for salting before traditional smoking. The moisture, salt, pH, acidity and vinegar were significantly different in some of the groups (P < 0.05). Mussels smoked using liquid and oak wood sawdust, in tomato puree sauce, curry sauce and sunflower oil sauce, were sterilized at 120 ± 1 ºC and 5.2 ± 0.1 F_0. In none of the products was swelling or C. botulinum detected at 37 ºC or 55 ºC. Prior to canning, the mussels were investigated for fecal coliform, coliform and total plate count and found to carry no risk in terms of these parameters.

Gyrodactylus arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933 was identified on the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., 1758 in the present study, which was carried out between January and May 2000. A total of 151 fish specimens were examined. The infestation prevalence and mean intensity levels were 80.2% and 35.44 ± 8.87 parasites per fish, respectively. Many chemical anesthetics and drugs have been used in fish stripping, surgery and transportation, but their undesirable side effects on the body metabolism during treatment are not usually taken into consideration. In this study, we investigated the inhibition effect of some chemical anesthetics, such as Tranquil and tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), and hypothermia on glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity. The effects of different extenders and cryoprotectants on the viability and fertilizing ability of frozen spermatozoa from the mirror carp, Cyprinus carpio L. (1758), were investigated. Semen was collected from anesthesized males by the abdominal massage method. Having determined the main spermatological properties (volume, motility, duration of motility, total spermatozoa number, concentration and pH), the pooled ejaculates were diluted with 3 extenders containing different cryoprotectants (15% DMSO, 15% DMA, 15% Glycerol) individually. The effects of spatially localized and spatially dispersed feeding patterns on the growth, size distribution and feed conversion ratio of the African catfish were investigated. Two groups of fish with an initial weight of 82.16 ± 4.80 and 82.40 ± 3.90 g were subjected to point source and scatter feeding patterns, respectively, for 2 months. Scatter fed fish reached a final mean weight of 192.69 ± 6.60 g while the mean final weight of point source fed fish was 169.67 ± 6.80 g ( P < 0.05). The specific growth rates of scatter and point source fed fish were 1.51% day^{-1} and 1.29% day^{-1}, respectively. The feed conversion ratio of scatter fed fish was 1.86 and that of point source fed fish was 2.29. Escherichia coli is the most common bacterium that has been isolated from the bacterial culture of uterine and fecal samples of dogs with pyometra. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this organism could be relevant to the pathogenesis of pyometra in dogs. Fecal and uterine samples were collected from 17 bitches with pyometra. E. coli strains were isolated in all samples. The status of populations of anchovies in Turkish terrestrial waters was preliminarily investigated using morphometric characters with the truss network system. Samples were taken from the main fishing areas of each sea, comprising the central (Sinop) and eastern (Trabzon) Black Sea, the Aegean Sea (İzmir) and the eastern Mediterranean (İskenderun). Plotting discriminant functions 1 and 2, explaining 93% of between-group variability, revealed a high degree of dissimilarity among the anchovy samples, indicating that the anchovies in each sea represent different aggregations. This study examined the pathological changes in tissues and organs with acute intoxications with amitraz and its veterinary medicinal formulation. In total 312 healthy white English mice (Mus musculus), 156 female and 156 male, were used for this purpose. The solutions were given to the mice by gavage at the following dosages: 500, 1000, 1500, 1800, 2200 or 2500 mg of technical amitraz/kg and 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 mg of amitraz/kg in a veterinary formulation. This study was carried out between January 1996 and December 1997 in Kayaboğazı Dam Lake. During this period 424 specimens were examined. The age of females and males ranged from I to VII. The fork length and weight of females and males were 102-277 mm and 15-377.02 g and 125-274 mm and 27-369.02 g, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between females and males in terms of body length and weight.The sex ratio (male:female) was 0.947:1.
