In this study, gastric emptying and factors affecting gastric emptying in fish are briefly reviewed. How stomach-sampling time affects gastric emptying curves in relation to realising the chyme in fish is presented. A new modelling approach describing gastric emptying in fishes is also given.

Beach seine nets are commonly used in Turkish coastal areas, especially the Aegean Sea, to catch fish commercially. However, it is known that these nets place excessive pressure on juvenile fish stocks. The aim of the present study was to examine the selection of fish species caught by a beach seine net with a 36 mm mesh size cod-end. In the experiments, the covered cod-end method was used to catch fish escaping from the cod-end. Toxocara canis is a nematode of the family Ascaridae. Following ingestion by dogs, the infective eggs hatch and larvae penetrate the gut wall and migrate into various tissues. There are two main clinical forms of T. canis infection; visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans. Toxocariasis is treated with antiparasitic drugs, such as diethylcarbamazine, albendazole and mebendazole. A change in the vaccination strategy used in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey to combat the effects of infections with endemic virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in maternally immune birds is described in this retrospective work. A novel vaccination schedule was applied to approximately 2,230,000 chickens from different breeds. The alterations were based on the use of an inactivated NDV + infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and the application of aerosol vaccines with different timings compared to traditional programmes. D1, D2 and D3 diets containing 15.5, 12.5 and 9.0 MJ kg^{-1} digestible energy concentrations were offered to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792), and the rates of gastric evacuation and feed intake were determined. Gastric evacuation determinations were achieved by slaughtering eight fish every 6 h until no residue was found in the cardiac stomach. Return of appetite experiments were conducted by re-feeding groups of trout every 6 h following the first feeding. The effects of different daily feeding rates on the specific growth rate and food conversion ratio of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri) were investigated in order to determine the optimum daily feeding rate for fish with an initial mean weight of 1736 ± 37 g. To this end, a Latin Square experimental set-up was designed consisting of four groups of 25 fish fed a rainbow trout diet at four different daily feeding rates (0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50% body weight/day) for four 2-week periods. The relationship of age, growth and length-weight was analyzed for Chalcalburnus mossulensis from the Aşkale region of Karasu River from November 1995 to October 1997. Fish in the sample groups were between 1 and 7 years and the ratio of males to females was 1:1.08. Von Bertalanffy equations were used to find the growth in length for both sexes. Transgenic Bovine Nuclear Transfer Embryos From Adult Somatic Cell Lines*, Sezen Arat, S. Jacek Rzucidlo, Steven L. Stice

This study was performed to examine whether adult fibroblast cells can be manipulated genetically and whether clonal lines derived from those cells can support embryonic development. A primary adult cell line was established from the ear of an aged cow. Adult cells with a plasmid containing the enhancer green fluorescence protein (EGFP) gene, and non-transfected cells were used for cloning. Green fluorescence expression was observed in 35/49 (71.4%) adult clones. The developmental rates of embryos were significantly lower for cell lines expressing EGFP (11.4%) than for non-transfected cells (20.1%, P < 0.05). However, there was no decrease in nuclear transfer (NT) developmental rates (21.5%) when donor nuclei from EGFP transfected cell lines not expressing EGFP but retaining neomycin-resistance gene expression were used as donor nuclei. The NT embryos from transfected and non-transfected cell lines had similar morphology and cell numbers. The results indicated that adult cells can complete clonal propagation including transfection and selection and can be used to produce transgenic NT embryos.

Changes in fatty acid composition were investigated during the early development stages (egg, embryo, alevin and fry) of rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss). It was found that saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, i.e., 14:0, 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9, were utilized to a greater extent as energy substrates. Quantities of 18:3n-6, 18:4n-3, 20:2n-6 and 22:5n-3 fatty acids were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) during early development. The most significant depletion was observed in monounsaturated fatty acids, which fell from 33.89% to 23.41% during development while n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids fell from 16% to 12.9%.

In this study, findings of the qualities and quantities of commercial and trash catches from beach-seining in coastal waters of the Aegean Sea are presented. A total of 62 finfish and eight invertebrate taxa were identified in catches sampled during May, June, July and September 1996, with 42 taxa being retained and 28 taxa being genuine trash catches. The estimated total ratio of commercial to genuine trash catch (kg) was 1:0.273. The fish and invertebrate species caught from beach seine fishery were typical of those that inhabit coastal embayments in the Aegean Sea. The aim of this study was to estimate the carrying capacity of Kesikköprü Dam Lake, Ankara, where cage farms for the intensive culture of rainbow trout are located. For this purpose Dillon and Rigler's phosphorus budget model was applied in a series of steps and the carrying capacity of the lake was found to be 3335 tonnes per year. This estimated value was about 10 times higher than the present production level of the lake. It seems possible to orientate the fish culture in cages in inland waters by using the phosphorus budget model recommended in this study.

The Effect Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Walbaum, 1792) Cage Culture On Benthic Macrofauna In Kesikköprü Dam Lake*, İlknur Karaca, Serap Pulatsü

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of a cage farm with a capacity of about 55 t on the benthic macrofauna in Kesikköprü Dam Lake. At 3 stations (the cage and 15 m and 60 m from the cage) selected for this purpose the abundance and composition of benthic macrofauna were determined for 11 months. The abundance of benthic macrofauna (individuals/m^2) between the stations was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The abundance of benthic macrofauna was higher at the cage station than at the other 2 stations, except in April and November. During the research period the lowest number of individuals (937 individuals/m^2) was found at the second station 15 m from the cage in February; and the highest number (14,091 individuals/m^2) was determined at the cage station in December. Members of the class Pelecypoda were found at all 3 stations. Dreissena, which is a member of the class Pelecypoda, was the most dominant benthic organism (54%), followed by Chrinomus (30%) and Tubifex (11%). At the cage station, while members of the class Pelecypoda were found, no members of the classes Insecta, Oligocheta or Crustacea were found. The highest number of benthic macrofauna genera (7) was found at the station 60 m from the cage in April and November. The lowest number of genera (1) was found at the cage station in July. The results of this study in Kesikköprü Dam Lake reveal that the cage culture has a localizing effect on the abundance and composition of benthic macrofauna.

This study is concerned with the feeding behavior of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca (L., 1758)) living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake constructed on the Kızılırmak River. There were 326 pikeperch caught between August 1996 and July 1997. The fork length and weight of the pikeperch caught ranged between 105 and 529 mm and 12 and 1520 g in the general population. Pikeperch are carnivorous and piscivorous and they eat their own species when nutrients are lacking. The smallest fish-swallowing length was determined to be 145 mm. Of the strains, five were isolated from gulls (one A. hydrophila strain and four A. caviae strains) and four from rainbow trout (three A. hydrophila strains and one A. caviae strain). Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) was purified from goose erythrocytes and some characteristics of the enzyme were investigated. The purification procedure was composed of 3 steps: hemolysate preparation, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 3 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having a specific activity of 36.2 EU/mg protein, was purified for a yield of 68.79% and 3892 folds; to ascertain enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was performed. This study was intended to establish whether there is any relation between immune deficiency and cryptosporidiosis by using an animal model. Forty Rattus norvegicus rats obtained from the Experimental Animal Laboratories of the Ege University Faculty of Medicine were divided into two groups. This study investigates the relationship between total length (TL) and fork length (FL), girth (G), height (H) and width (W) of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) (n = 953) and annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis) (n = 944) collected during trawl selectivity trials carried out in İzmir Bay between July 1996 and February 1997. Longissimus dorsi muscle obtained from beef carcasses was used in this study. Meat cores 2.54 cm in diameter were marinated in 0.34, 0.68 and 1.02 M sodium chloride (NaCl) and 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15 M calcium chloride (CaCl_2) solutions at 5 °C for 72 h. Warner Bratzler Shear (WBS) values were significantly different between samples. The samples marinated with CaCl_2 held less water than those marinated in NaCl. Cooking losses were lower in the control samples than in the marinated samples. Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to determine the amount of bound water in the meat samples. Rainbow trout reared in fresh water were exposed to a sublethal concentration of mancozeb (1/2 of LC_{50} = 1.1 mg/l) at 24 h intervals, for 3 weeks in tanks containing 780 l water under natural light conditions with a constant flow (1.5 l min^{-1}) of aerated dechlorinated tap water at 9-11 °C and with no recirculation. Approximately 2 cc venous blood was drawn from each subject (after weekly exposure) for the determination of hematological parameters, using heparin as an anticoagulant. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the specific blood velocity parameters called peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and the resistive index (RI) in the internal ophthalmic artery (IOA) and the long posterior ciliary artery (LPCA) with color Doppler imaging (CDI) in clinically normal dogs. Eight healthy dogs were used in the study. Color Doppler ultrasonography was performed on both eyes. PSV, EDV and RI measurements were obtained for both eyes. Giardia is a ubiquitously distributed flagellate protozoon that inhabits the small intestine of its host. In this paper, Giardia infection is reported in the gall bladder of an adult cow. Faecal samples from asymptomatic dairy cows and calves from several farms in Zara, Sivas, were studied by direct examination and the zinc sulphate flotation techniques. No Giardia cysts were found in 106 samples. In addition, the gall bladders of cattle provided from the slaughterhouse in Sivas were tested by direct and zinc sulphate flotation technique examination. In a 9-month-old male German Shepherd, degenerative arthritis and incongruity of the elbow joint were observed due to premature closure of the distal radial growth plate. An obvious shortening was present in the radius and ulna, when compared to the contralateral leg. Corticotomy was carried out on the radius and an Ilizarov apparatus was applied to the leg by passing Kirschner wires through the proximal and distal fragments of the radius. Aortic body tumors were investigated macroscopically and microscopically in a 2-year-old, clinically normal, male cross-breed dog. Two tumor masses measuring 4 x 4 x 3 cm in size were determined. One of them was located on the A. subclavia dextra and the other one was located on the A. carotis communis dextra and they adhered to the adventitia of these vessels.
